Little-known former regional development minister Sevil Shhaideh has been proposed as Romania's first woman prime minister, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) says.

If, as expected, her appointment is approved by President Klaus Iohannis and by parliament, the 52-year-old will also become the first Muslim to head the Romanian government. Around 0.3 per cent of the population in Romania is Muslim.

The Social Democrats won parliamentary elections on December 11 but narrowly missed an outright majority, meaning they will form a coalition with allies such as the small liberal party ALDE.

PSD leader Liviu Dragnea was unable to become prime minister because of a conviction in connection with election manipulation. Under Romanian law, a convicted person is barred from high government positions.

However, he has said that the political responsibility for governing remains in his hands, leading observers to speculate that he will seek to amend the law and open the door for himself to take over.
Dragnea said he expects a new cabinet to be in place quickly.

All parties prior to the election had supported the independent Dacian Ciolos, who has been the sitting prime minister for the past year.

First of many European Muslim countries.

When will be see a first ever non Muslim prime minister in Pakistan? Probably never.

Our constitution doesn't allow it. Unfortunately that will never be the case, unless we are willing to give up the title of "Islamic Republic".

Just shows how much more open minded and tolerant non Muslims are compared to Muslims.

I wouldn't say all non-Muslims are like that. However, this is a by-product of European democracy that doesn't pay regard to religion or race as long as you are loyal to the country.

Non news really...

If one reads the article...Liviu Dragnu has selected her essentially to fill in for him until he can amend the laws to make himself PM...

He's currently not PM because he's frankly corrupt...and actually has a suspended two year sentence for corruption...

And before you ask why did the Romanians vote for a guy who was convicted for rigging votes...only 30% turned out...evidently all the options were terrible...

And this fill in PM who happens to be a woman and Muslim is just the right hand woman for one of Romanias most corrupt politicians...

And that's how it should be. Unfortunately most Muslims like to think about their fellow Muslims aka the Ummah first before anyone else even the non Muslims from their own country.

Nothing wrong in thinking about your Ummah first provided Ummah exists :)

She is a tatar. They have been Europeans for centuries. And most mainstream muslims wouldn't even considr them muslims.

I've met quite a few practicing European Muslims here, what some takfiris think doesn't matter. Some other famous Tatar Muslims I can think of are Nail Yakupov (NHL player) and Marat Safin and his sister.

Can you elaborate?...as far I know they are Hanafi Muslims...and consider themselves Muslim albeit very secular ones...

They are muslims if they consider themselves muslims. But the salafists from certain oil money nations disagree and have been sending their imams to these european muslim communities, especially tatars, dagestanis and bosniaks. But with little success so far.

Who told you that? We have a fairly significant community of Tartar Muslims in Japan. They have their own cultural idiosyncracies, but so does every other Muslim group.

Well i'd disagree with that...Dagestan and Bosnia they had some success as they did with Chechnya...their first war was all nationalist rhetoric and the Salafists certainly brought in the Islamic part next time round...

I'd say Balkan and Ex Soviet Muslims are the most liberal i've seen on the whole...but their fringe elements are quite Islamic...Tatars seem an exception though...it's the only part of Russia where there is religious coexistence...

Tatars are a bit of an anomaly in Russia actually...it's like Russia's claim of religious coexistence...

What about Bashkirs, Circassians and Ingush people, I heard they're muslim too(?).

The reason why Tatars may seem more religious is because the religious ones are more visible. Many mainstream Russians, Romanians, Poles etc... are not very religious tatars but people don't know about their ethnicity, they just assume they are ethnic russians for example.

What about Bashkirs, Circassians and Ingush people, I heard they're muslim too(?).

Adyghes (Circassian) were mostly killed off. There aren't a lot left in Russia.

Most of these groups are muslims except Abkhaz (the muslim abkhaz were deported to Turkey, only the christians remain), Ossetians and Kalmyks (buddhists).

The Circassians used to live in all that corresponds to the Adyghe republic and the Krasnodar Krai (on the upper left).

Ingush are Muslim...the Caucasus minus Ossetia are...Wahabis have had a big influence in that region and there is a push from the Kremlin to promote Sufism there...

There are 7 million Tatars and its an economic hub so quite an important part of Russia...its half Muslim half Orthodox...

Don't know much about the Bashkirs really...or the Kabardians who are the main sub group of Circassians...

Good for her but nothing to feel proud of, she got there because of her individual talent and not her faith. Sadly we won't even allow most talented non muslim to be our prime minister so let's others who give opportunity to others without discrimination.

Actually she got there because the actual guy who got voted in can't take his position right now because of corruption issues...its a temporary position...and considering her boss her talents aren't worth talking about...

Why is it that people have this mentality that white people cannot be "true muslims"?

So your point is? It doesn't negate what I said.

You are totally wrong in saying that non-Muslims are more open minded than Muslims. You could say that the West is more open-minded than South Asia, however.

Then again, you're a known anti-Islamic poster who won't stop posting this sort of nonsense.

No, a person should always think about people around him first before thinking about someone in another part of the world.

Do you care more about that one random guy who lives a block away from you or that family member who lives in another country?

Good for Romania and it's people + Congratulations to the person about to become the latter !!
