Apart from the 1992 one in Aus/NZ, I am not sure if any other WC had this format. So just digging through experiences from the 1992 WC.
[A. You can always come back in such a format][/B]
Case in point - Pakistan. They had a miserable start losing by 10 wickets to W. Indies, and then after a decent victory against Zim, followed by being shot out for 70 or so against England and being saved by rains (this was a vital rain related point, else they would not have won the cup), followed by a bad enough loss to India, then a loss (not a mauling though) to South Africa. After this 3 victories and to the knockout stage where they played very well. They were settled by this stage. They were one of the best teams on paper and Inzy came through in the KO stage.
[B. Do not play too much cricket beforehand - stay fresh][/B]
Case in point: Australia and India. They played from some time in November to next March non-stop. Very tired teams in the WC. That was a world cup where there were not many stand out teams on paper, apart from Pakistan probably. South Africa was good but the world did not know much about them. Jonty's first exposure; Donald was established though. Lara's first real exposure too. The strengths of the current sides in the 2019 world cup are more polar than 1992.
Rest is very important as point A says that you can always come back in a round robin format if you are a good enough side.
[C. By Knockout stage, team should be peaking and not over-tired ][/B]
Again Case in point is Pakistan from 1992. And KO stages are as always unpredictable, but if you are a better side, who is just about peaking, you should have a better chance.
