Pakistan won the toss in this must win encounter between the two sides and opted to bowl first. Fahim Ashraf made his ODI debut, replacing Shadab Khan. Pakistan's opening bowlers kept things tight at the start but soon the SL openers began going after the ball with Dickwella scooping one for four inside the first five overs. Gunathilaka was the first to depart, dismissed by Junaid. A partnership developed between Dickwella and Mendis and they looked at ease at the crease. Hasan's introduction to the attack brought the next wicket as a jaffa got rid of the dangerous Mendis. Chandimal departed a couple of balls later as he dragged one onto his stumps. Mathews brought some solidity to the middle and put on another partnership with Dickwella who reached a fifty. With the partnership looking dangerous, Amir returned and had Mathews bowled as he dragged one onto his stumps. De Silva fell soon, caught behind off Junaid while Dickwella was next to fall, top scoring with 73 as he inside edged one off Amir with Sarfraz grabbing an excellent catch. Perera fell cheaply to Junaid as well but Lakmal provided Gunaratne with some support at the crease. The two took the total beyond 200 before Hasan removed both in the space of a few overs. Fahim got the last wicket of Pradeep as SL were bowled out for 236 in 49.2 overs.

Pakistan's chase began on the front foot as Fakhar went after the SL bowlers. Azhar played the anchor role at the other end. The two seemed to complement each other well as Fakhar went hell for leather bringing up his maiden ODI fifty off just 34 balls. However, he was out to Pradeep just two balls later, hooking one to the fielder at fine leg. Babar started uncertainly and eventually fell to the same bowler as he flicked one uppishly to midwicket for just 10. Hafeez only survived a few balls before lobbing one to the leg side for a simple catch as SL came right back into the game. Next was Azhar as he was dismissed, caught in the slips after making 34 off 50 balls. Malik looked uncertain at the crease as SL opted to bring their main pacers back and his short stay came to an end as Malinga had him caught, gloving a bouncer down the leg-side to the keeper. Imad hit one boundary and then fell as he loosely wafted at one outside off as Pakistan slumped from 74/0 to 137/6. Fahim showed some resolve to fight it out on debut as he hooked a short ball for six but he fell a little while later, run out while backing up at the non-striker's end after making 15. Amir came out to bat with steely resolve and resolutely defended while Sarfraz stayed at the crease as well. The two steadily built the partnership and were gifted chances by SL as Sarfraz was twice dropped by the fielders. He made it count as the partnership strengthened and eventually passed 50. Pakistan inched closer towards the target as Mathews bowled out his main bowlers without being able to get the breakthrough. Sarfraz surpassed 50 and eventually took Pakistan over the finish line with 31 balls to spare, setting a record 8th wicket partnership of 75* with Amir in the process as Pakistan advanced to the semis and knocked Sri Lanka out

One of those meaningful wins that have hardly made me happy, tbh, wasn't looking up for this match, to me, it was always a win despite all the dramas, even when 6 or 7 were down...I knew it was a victory.

Amir should be declare Man of the match though sarfaraz hanges himself as well but if this wasn't Amir we couldn't win here.

Excellant batting by Sarfaraz and Amir under pressure.
These kind of innings under pressure is what defines a character

Pakistan should say goodbye to some players in order to have any chance against england. Hafeez and Azhar Ali.

could not reply due to prayer of taravi

are u well ehehheheheheh

As Sunil Gavaskar says, Pakistan showed more hunger to win.. Sri Lanka was lethargic..

Ravi shastri - body language of Sri Lankans we're pathetic

Sri Lanka just out-Pakistaned Pakistan. Had my heart in my mouth ever since Fahim went. Unbelievable stuff. You can say we didn't deserve to win this but the truth is SL did not deserve it to win it even more than us.

Can't believe Pakistan made a match out of it. Congrats to them but hope they have better outing against England rather than this harakiri while batting.

We should have won this game without any fuss. Pakistan need to find good middle order batsmen. Time to say good bye to hafeez and azhar they just not made for this format especially Azhar, he might have played decently today, but to move forward we need players who can play fearless cricket. If it was over 250 target we wouldn't have won it.

Best of Luck Pakistan in the semifinals against the Best Team of the tournament. What are the odds Pakistan will Win. Only Pakistan team can beat England. Lets hope good Pakistan team will turn up for the semis.

Malik and Hafeez played dirty again they made sure Pak lost this game. These two shady characters should be dropped from the team.

Very lucky that we stumbled into the one team that's as shambolic as we are in Sri Lanka.

That chase should never have gotten as close as it did. Azhar, Hafeez, Malik and Imad should be ashamed of themselves. Babar gave his wicket away softly once again.

Sarfraz, Amir and the bowlers take a bow. Fakhar showed signs of promise again with an attacking fifty.

Well done Pakistan on defying expectations and reaching the SFs, but we have a lot of work to do with this ODI team.

well done cornered tigers now lets get that 92 spirit going and really push on against Englend.

Good win. Exhilarating finish. Thrilling contest. Entertaining to watch. Well played Pakistan.

Who will be the wasim akram against England this time?

Fantastic game and Amir once again showed he can bat well whenever he wants to.

And congrats to everyone on the win. We are now one step closer to winning the CT

Fakhar played a very important part in this win. Only due to his knock pak never really had to bother about NRR. Another young debutant looks good with the bat. So future looking not that bad

True if it wasn't for his innings this may have went down to the last over.

Need to freshen up the batting bring in Haris for Hafeez who looks vulnerable. Fakhar is a real find.

Both games Fakhar has tried to play as a fearless attacking opener and both games Azhar has dragged him down with no support. Azhar must go and next game Hafeez must open with Fakhar because Hafeez is not going anywhere.

Today Safraz proved his worth as a captain. Brilliant fighting under pressure captains knock with support from Amir. Amir is a handy bat and we have seen that from his 73 he made with Saeed Ajmal few yrs back.

Today we saw a Pakistan team fight for the win and earn their spot in the semi-final. This is what we want. Yes Pakistan never do it the easy way but where is the fun in that. It was a knockout game and if anybody can produce low scoring thrillers its Pakistan.

Next Target England!

did not watch the match after 6 down

can anyone tell me about the match
You missed one of the best comebacks in cricket.Coming on to the match they played sensibly, rotated the strike really well never looked in any tension till the runs required were less than 40,when less then 40 were required Sarfaraz gave SL 2-3 opportunities but they dropped everything, fielding was poor very poor, they must have conceded 20 runs in the field,on the other hand it was Amir of all men who looked flawlss, untroubled throughout his innings, and WE WON,That was a long summary of the match.......

thank u bro great by sarfi and amir

I missed it due to taravi i am glad we win it

True but i thinkk for Pakistan's sake he should slow down after reaching 40 or 50 and try to get a big score. He is capable of it. Iirc he has a 150 in a t20 game as well.

Fakhar is MOM. He took the run rate out of the equation. Allowed Amir and Sarfraz to bat without having to worry about the number of balls left.

Imagine if this was Shehzad and Azhar. We would have been 72/2 at 20 overs. The run rate would have started to climb.

Win is a win. Congrat to Pakistan,so what if it came uneasy way. Also not seeing any love for Hasan Ali here, again he was a top wicket taker, a very clever bowler indeed. New M.Asif. IMO

If only amir had enough guts to pitch the ball up he would have been international materiel :sreesanth

I hate to admit it but i am glad to see pak through.

SL adds for no entertainment value in semis. I would have hated to see India-SL finals more than anything else, though i wish it will be India vs Pak in finals.

Worst case scenario for me is Pak vs BD in finals :D

Congrats for the win and welcome to the Semis

You make it seem as if English team is their for selling tea at stands. :))

Congrats to Pakistan a win is a win and qualifiying for semis is a big thing.

I think what has helped Pakistan in the last two matches is that the bowlers have got some movement - nothing extravagant, but just enough to trouble the batsmen. On docile, flat pitches it becomes more a batting contest and as Pakistan lacks the firepower of other teams, that is to their disadvantage. But when there is something for the bowlers they are much more of a force.

The batting was pathetic as usual, I hope we get lucky and win it all but we really need our top order batsmen to step it up.

Great win I had a feeling we would win but Ashraf's unlucky run out made me think it wasn't gonna be our day. Feel sorry for Perera for dropping that sitter but it is what it is. I had 2 exams so wasn't allowed on my phone as I had a clash so was kept in isolation so the first time I checked the score we were 64/0 chasing and then we collapsed when I started following. Then got home and was so tense

Amir as a batsman was was chance-less innings ..... as Sarfaraz gave two chances to be out ..... my MOM was Amir as he also bowled well

Sarfaraz played a great inning and was lucky too, Amir played even better and bowled well. How come Amir was not the MOM.

no offence but Pakistan batted like losers all these games (except that new opener). and if they continue this way against England then good luck to them.

Don't mind versus England as more or less a team I support on par with Pakistan in LOI ... Would've ideally it been Bengis and England best India ...

Congrats Pakistan well played and good luck against England. Should be a good tussle. Must say after that drinks break Pakistan bowling and fielding was just top notch. Turned the game on it's head. As for our lot the fielding was pathetic as usual not going to win too many games dropping sitters and giving away free runs. Having said that tho good to see them show some ticker at least last couple of games. Pick four proper front-liners, get rid of the TTFs and make fitness and fielding a top priority and there might just be some real hope come the WC in a couple of years time.

We did not win rather Sri Lanka lost it by dropping Azhar on zero and Sarfraz twice. Batting like this against England will mean we won't even get a 100. There was no need for Fakhar to play that hook when he was doing so well. Then Faheem doesn't slide his bat in so we lose another needless wicket. We just don't learn from our mistakes.

err no. Sarfraz was the clear man of the match for his captaincy, jazba, catches and getting us home. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to watch more cricket.

coming onto the team, wow. This is what some of us veterans have been praying for. We know the team isnt as ******** as some otehrs, but we want to see that fighting spirit that Imrans tigers bought to the party. And Ive been saying it for a while now, sarfi brings that street fighter jazba with him. You can see how he is inspiring his troops..No more droopy shoulders malik and sweaty palm Hafeez!

This team has gone far beyond my expectations and I think this is a great foundation moving forward no matter what happens on weds.

Thats true
Even though we won in the end but it did not feel like a win.we should have been conmfortably home instead we made it a complete mess. I think Mathews deserved better for his great captaincy. Every SL fan will never forget how Perrera dropped such a dolly at crucial time.

Don't agree.. Azhar Ali looks a good batsman.. you need solid players like him.

Azhar Ali looks like a good batsman from what angle. He is not cut out for this format. Scores way too slow. Looks to force it every single time. Plays a pressure releasing shot after eating up several balls. Looks like the most flawed opener going around. Need to learn to rotate strike. Time and place the ball. Put too much pressure on the partner as well as the following batsmen. All of this is is completely different in tests though.

Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Amir drag Pakistan to Champions Trophy semi-finals

What an unbelievable match, what an unbelievable win! Pakistan being Pakistan and yet managing to win is the most exciting and tense sight in world cricket right now.

Fabulous performance by Amir yesterday, bowled his heart out and batted better than most Pakistan batsmen on the day. Sarfraz may not have played the best innings of his life, but it was doubtlessly amongst his life´s most crucial innings.

By the way, as I posted before the match, I still maintain it wasn´t the right choice to bowl first - basically, to put the Pakistan batsmen in a situation of chasing. They almost goofed up, and despite a fantastic start, the shaky legs just took over till Sarfraz finally found a sane partner. So, even in this win my point stands as true, given the way they chased down the total.

What a performance by Sarfraz and Amir!!!! Hats off to them, both will be very crucial against England.

sorry dont agree tht pak goofed up should have made lanka chase, it was 236 target when normally we get 300 plus scores in matches, it was a nothing score to chase

we could have easily stumbled batting first around the same score even lower and it might have been very difficult to defend that total

This match made me believe that Pakistan were going to win the CT.
