"Sarfaraz Ahmed is a fighter who has always come up victorious in every situation" : Javed Miandad

ISLAMABAD: Batting legend Javed Miandad on Tuesday said it will be a wrong move by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) if Sarfraz Ahmed is removed from national captaincy, noting the team is doing well under the wicket-keeper’s leadership.

Talking to APP, Miandad said the credit goes to Sarfraz for winning the back-to-back Twenty20 series against Australia and New Zealand.

“However, ODIs and Tests are real cricket on the basis of which a team’s capability is judged. Our players must perform in longer formats to prove their place in the team. The real test for Pakistan will be the one-dayers against New Zealand,” former Pakistan captain Miandad said of the three-match ODI series beginning in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

“Our players must try to play out full 50 overs in order to score handsome totals. Our [main] batsmen need to stay at the wicket for 35 to 40 overs so that there are enough wickets in hand to increase scoring rate in the final overs, Miandad, a veteran of 124 Tests and 233 ODIs, insisted.

When asked why he thought he was not considered by the present PCB regime for the newly-formed cricket committee or any relevant post in the Board, Miandad said “it is their choice if they do not want my help to improve cricket affairs”.

Meanwhile, former Test wicket-keeper Saleem Yousuf said Sarfraz must lead the team till the 2019 World Cup, saying players are performing very well under his captaincy.

Talking to APP, Saleem said recently Pakistan beat Australia and New Zealand in the T20 series which is a great achievement for Sarfraz.

“Ups and downs come in the life of every player. However, it does not mean that Sarfraz has given up. He is a fighter who has always come up victorious in every situation,” he said.

“The PCB must form a formidable team for the 2019 World Cup keeping in mind the conditions and pitches in England.”

Miandad sees a little of himself in Sarfaraz!

100% losing record against high ranked ODI teams since the Champions Trophy. I wonder what will a “losing situation” look like?

The fact that we are celebrating meaningless success in T20s while enjoying mid-table rankings in Tests and ODIs shows how much we have declined as a cricketing nation.

The minnow mentality has spread to ex-players as well, including the ones who have witnessed glory in Tests and ODIs.

A very sad state of affairs indeed.

Not entirely true.

Javed is coming out in his support just because both are from the same area.

If you really think he's a fighter, sure, make him the T20 captain only. We're doing great there. But someone averaging 19 at 70 strike rate for more than a year in ODIs...

How to justify his position there?

When were we ever at the top in odi rankings?

Lot of fighting needed to come out on top of New Zealand.

It isn’t about rankings. The likes of Miandad have witnessed (and were part of) the zenith of Pakistan cricket.

To see them celebrate meaningless T20 bilateral success and turn a blind eye towards our humiliation in ODIs is very depressing.

I don't think, unless PCB forces upon, any player with some commonsense would take the Captaincy of PAK, replacing Sarfraz. I can see a BIG chunk of PAK in every aspect (from PCB to PP to former greats), are blind supporters of the guy - there must be a reason, which I don't know :), but his cricket skills & leadership are definitely not among those, may be for fitness and work ethics ...... he scored 18.2!!!

This team is not going to turn fortune over night and whoever is made Captain, basically will sign his dead sentence - Bhakts will shred him up to blood cells for every PAK loss, which will be plenty regardless of who leads the side (And in PP, few neutral heads that still exists here will be called upon twice in every post with forum name and ......).

Hail the king, even Javed could see a shed of himself in the legend (but, "always" might be a bit too ambitious word, Sarfraz isn't that good to be honest).

Those are artificial losses as you say.
Sir faraz to lead us to WC GLORY.

Then there must be something since he has so much support. I truly wish he leads PAK during the WC.
