Legendary batsman Younus Khan has urged current national team captain Sarfraz Ahmed to start performing on a personal level, otherwise his spot in the team may come under question.

Younus, whose UBL side won the National One Day Departmental Cup on Sunday, was quick to point out that this is more or less the same group of players that won the Champions Trophy last year and were on a nine-match winning streak going into the New Zealand series.

Pakistan’s most prolific Test batsman did say that the team is underperforming but felt some leeway must be afforded to them due to the unfamiliar nature of the conditions they are currently playing in. “Pakistani batsmen have almost always found it difficult to play against New Zealand in New Zealand,” he said. “The conditions there are quite different and are arguably even tougher than what you find in England, South Africa or even Australia.”

Younus urged fans and the media to support the players in their time of need. “They should be backed right now rather than being bashed by everyone,” he said. “However, they should be adopting to the conditions better; they can’t just keep using that as an excuse every time they travel anywhere. They will have to work hard on the skills required to flourish on such pitches. Their technique needs to improve, just blaming the conditions after every defeat won’t suffice.”

The World T20-winning skipper also discussed the performances of skipper Sarfraz, stating that they need to improve. “Sarfraz was instrumental in the Champions Trophy coming to Pakistan but in recent matches his performances have been anything but satisfactory,” said Younus.

“He needs to concentrate on his own game and improve quickly. As a captain, you have added responsibility since the level of your individual performance may have an impact on the performance of the rest of the team. Sarfraz will have to give himself time and work further on his skill-set and fitness.”

Younus was quick to offer up his own services to the national team if they are required in any way. “I am working with UBL and will always be available for the national team if they want to hire me as their batting coach,” said the veteran.

Good comments by YK.... Sarfaraz needs to start batting at 4 or 5 again.... He is killing his own career by facilitating garbage like Azhar, Hafeez and Malik.

Younis was himself a rubbish and over-rated ODI player. SAme like Misbah Hafeez Malik Akmal brothers & Ahmed Shahzad.

But, he is :

A Legendary Test Cricketer. No doubt.

Sarfraz is a garbage wicket keeper like Moin Khan. His captaincy skills are none but to shout all the time. Now he is exposed. He should be thankful to Azhar Ali and Hassan Ali for winning us the CT otherwise his contribution was nothing. We should bring in Rizwan as Keeper and make Immad Wasim or Fakhar the captain soon.

Rizwan is a proven failure, won't make any difference. Better to find a new wicketkeeper batsman.

Umair Masood and Rohail Nazir need to be groomed as soon as possible.

WicketKeeper prime responsibility is to hold the gloves and Rizwan is great at that. The amount of catches and stumps Sarfraz misses out usually result in a loss. We could prevent that by putting in Rizwan who is a class keeper. Agree his batting is mediocre.

If sarfraz doesnt take his fitness seriously then his career will soon end... To be the captain in all formats keep wickets and bat well is not a cakewalk, need to be very serious about fitness..

Sarfraz has been terrible lately, regardless of where he bats, needs to show up or get shipped out.

Sack Flower and bring in Younis as batting coach. He is a no nonsense guy who won't buy into excuses, and unlike 2009, players won't be able to stand against him. Although him getting some coaching experience in domestics or u19 would be better than bringing him over to the national side directly.

Younis made some really solid points. Sarfaraz needs to perform ASAP, his wicketkeeping has been sub par and his batting poor. He also needs to work on his fitness.

The limelight on Sarf very soon - needs to do something special in T20s now

Perhaps for 1/2 games but you can't say that after five ODIs and one practice game. Hack Haris adjusted from his first game. So it is related to ability. Most of these guys are just not good enough Anywhere for modern day game.

Sarfraz needs someone strict like Younis in the coaching department, against whom he can't give excuses. Younis is known for being a hard task master, which should help our players. Highly doubt if anyone of the current lot would stand up to Younis. Grant seems too soft.
Younis even made Ahmed Shehzad know it was him who was at fault rather than umpires or pitch or conditions after his rants about getting consistently low scores in FC games.

every match i see Sarfraz walks in with a grumpy face after 4 wickets down :asif and goes back to the pavilion as the 5th wicket with a dejected face :rp...he needs to man up and come up the order... either open the inns or open with haris and bat at 3 or 4...

sarfi is busy practicing his splits. I was impressed by that. I thought he was too fat to do anything but then again I have seen obese people do the splits.

His ever garbage keeping and poor captaincy cost us the series 5-0 and now 1-0 in T20 already. Yesterday he forgot to give Amir his 4th over at all. he should have brought Amir when NZ was around 54/3 in 11 overs. He should learn quickly from his mistakes as its already too late.

The biggest change has to be his on field behaviour (dunno what it is like back stage). He screams and hsouts too much and has little tactical nous.

Another failure for Sarfaraz on tour - really needs to pick himself up as middle order will depend on this
