Who do you think should / will get the nod ? Personally hoping Shakeel gets the nod, he's a classy batsman and has a better record, plus being a left hander would mix things up vs the left arm spin of Keshav Maharaj

Saud shakeel. If azhar is opening there is no need for imran butt.

Imran Butt

Play specialists

If Azhar and/or Fawad fail then Saud &/or Kamran Ghulam can come in for the next series.

I guess Saud will only play if Azhar Ali opens or if Pakistan play 4 bowlers.

Would much rather see Saud. Don't expect much from Imran given his mediocre FC averages, but i guess someone in the PCB has seen something in him.

Pakistan will be playing Imran and Abid as openers.

No point playing Saud unless he's batting at 5 where he mostly bats in domestic and not at 3.

Let's not ruin yet another young player.

Saud batted at 3 for Sindh for all but 2-3 matches in the QEA Trophy.

He should play instead of Imran Butt who's only averaged above 40 in a domestic season once in 8 years. Get Azhar to open.

Saud Shakeel is probably one of the only batsmen in domestic cricket averaging 45+ who I can say has a very good technique. Like not often will you see him get out to a technical fault, it's usually a lapse in concentration or a lose shot, but hardly will you see him struggle against bowling. He's truly a good player in my opinion, and his solid technique is what we need from a No.3 batsman. You need to make sure that you don't give the opposition much to look at in terms of bowling, and that you capitalize when they bowl in your weak zones.

Look at Cheteshwar Pujara, the guy is a rock, his technique and temperament is phenomenal. He's a world class player, and if Saud Shakeel can improve his temperament, he can also reach that stage.

If there's one place I think Saud might have some trouble is with quick, short bowling targeted towards the chin, particularly from a right hander coming around the wicket. That's because I haven't really seem him be challenged with good bouncers and vicious short balls, which is something SA will look to do. The key with facing short-pitched bowling is to know when to leave and when to attack. Once you read the length, try to get out of the way and leave the ball, and if they mess up the length, cut/pull as you wish.

He's pretty good against spin bowling too, and the bowling of Maharaj shouldn't trouble him at all.

Therefore, I think Saud Shakeel is a better option, particularly because he can later be integrated into the ODI team as well in place of Haris Sohail.

Azhar won't be opening and neither would he give up his spot at 3 and as for Saud don't think he is suited for 3 as of now.

Start off at 5 and should work his way up if he can as over the next 2 years or so I'd like to see Babar at 3 being the best bat.

Saud without a doubt!

Azhar started off his career as an opener and when he was piling on runs during his peak, he was opening the batting.

The only reason Azhar played at 3 because Waqar wanted to play 3 openers in England, so Azhar just happen to be the 3rd opener at no. 3.

If azhar opens then saud will bat at 3
If azhar doesnt bat at 3 then it will be imran

Our search for opener requires more desperation than that of middle order batsman. Imran butt will perform better than both abid Ali and Masood

Saud,Saud and saud
I really like his batting teqnique

Why?

Fawad Alam is 35 and has an average of 25.00 since his comeback.

Why is he preferred to Saud Shakeel?

Fawad Alam is 35 and has an average of 25.00 since his comeback.

Why is he preferred to Saud Shakeel?

Because he has the third highest FC average in the world and is coming off the back of a century in foreign conditions against the number 1 Test side including 2 top 5 ranked bowlers and a 6’8” behemoth, for a Test back home at his home ground of National Stadium Karachi.

He might be old and I might rate Saud more just like you do, but Fawad deserves his spot.

Btw not good to cherry pick stats- whatever he may average since his comeback, he has never played a home test in that duration. Still has an away century.
