The extraordinary rise to fame of the eighteen-year-old leg-spinner Shadab Khan on the back of an outstanding PSL and two back-to-back Man-of-the-Match winning performances in the T20I series against the West Indies has surprised many. However, Shadab's talent and great start for Pakistan is no surprise for his Islamabad United Coach Dean Jones.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Jones spoke about the qualities which make Shadab Khan a stand-out talent, areas that the Islamabad coaches worked upon with Shadab and put forward a case for his inclusion in the Pakistan Test squad for the ongoing tour against the West Indies.

PakPassion.net : Are you surprised with the impact Shadab Khan has had in his first two matches for Pakistan?

Dean Jones : No, I am not. I always thought that he could do well. He is an interesting player to coach and I have said this before as well, that for an eighteen-year-old-kid he has the head of a thirty-year-old on him. He thinks about what the opposition players are about to do and most importantly, he is prepared to listen which is not what kids tend to do first-up. He has pretty much hit the ground running and yes, he will get whacked a few times in his career but Pakistan have something special there; they have a special kid and that’s for sure.

PakPassion.net : At eighteen he has no pressure and I guess no fear of failure. That must surely help him?

Dean Jones : A lot of people don’t like eighteen or nineteen year olds playing international cricket. This is definitely the case in Australia with a few exceptions of course like Darren Lehmann. No one expects youngsters at the age of fifteen to win Olympic gold medals as when you put too much pressure on kids like that then they can get hurt, but they still win those medals. But Shadab is different, he is mature beyond his years.

PakPassion.net : Which areas of weakness were identified when he was working with you at Islamabad United?

Dean Jones : He did come in with a few technical difficulties with his action and run-up, and we helped him with it during the PSL. We spoke with him about, and gave examples of Shane Warne, whom he admires a lot. We also mentioned the technique of Mushtaq Ahmed to him as well. Then we also brought up the name of Stuart Macgill to show him how all of these spinners got close to the crease. We asked him to adjust his bowling and told him that his landing zones needed to be different and better so that he could get batsmen out with his leg-breaks instead of the wrong'uns which he was relying on a lot more before his stint at the PSL. The fact that is he is now bowling on the off and middle stump line and the batsmen aren’t picking him at all. Initially, he was bowling wide off the crease, almost six inches to a foot wide, to try and get batsmen out using his wrong’un all the time. By doing this, in my view, he was selling himself short. So, we had to get him to straighten his run-up a bit so that he could land the ball on the middle-stump and off stump after which the ball would turn or not depending on conditions. To achieve this, we had to get him to train on special ‘dance’ steps to accustom himself to a straightened run-up. These were dance steps marked on the carpet of his hotel room so that he could practice before going to sleep and within a week or so, he was all set with this revised run-up and ready to go. He went from an Abdul Qadir type approach to the crease to a much straighter one now. He is certainly not averse to changing his technique and take a few risks along the way which is great.

PakPassion.net : It's great for Pakistan cricket that he is much more than just a leg-spinner?

Dean Jones : We admire and talk about his bowling, but it's worth mentioning that he is probably the best fieldsman in the Pakistan side at the moment. On top of that, he can bat too and some of those sixes he hit over cover in Dubai during the PSL were just breathtaking. These are the skills which make him the complete package.

PakPassion.net : What's Shadab like in the dressing room?

Dean Jones : I wouldn’t call him an introvert but he is a little shy and careful about the people around him. The main thing is that when he gets the ball in his hand, he knows exactly what he has to do. Now for a kid who hasn’t played that much cricket yet, it is amazing to see how he just seems to know where to bowl and has the confidence to back it up. I have no idea where that quality comes from but the guy is a genius.

PakPassion.net : What were your first impressions of Shadab when you saw him at practice?

Dean Jones : The very first time Wasim Akram and I saw Shadab in the nets, we looked at each other and said this boy is pure gold. We also had former Pakistan off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed to help him out which worked well. In a way, we just opened the gates of the ground for Shadab to play on and whilst he only trusts certain people about advice on his technique, we have now got him into an area where he is very very good.

PakPassion.net : Now that he has been successful in T20Is and also picked for the ODI squad, there is talk of him being picked for the Test squad. What are your thoughts on that?

Dean Jones : That would be fantastic news if he is picked for the Test squad and why not. Let’s get him in there, he's good enough. Look it's possible he may not do too well in there initially but on the other hand, he may well be very successful. I would hate to pigeon hole someone like Shadab as a specialist Twenty20 or One-Day cricketer if he can play all forms of the game. Obviously, it puts pressure on Yasir Shah whose fielding hasn’t been that good of late and he hasn’t made many runs as well and most importantly, he does not have a wrong’un like Shadab does. So, Shadab may not have the control that Yasir does but he is definitely someone who can be worked upon to improve in this area. The current tour of West Indies is just the type of a nice development Test tour, unlike those of England or Australia, where if given a chance we can find out where he’s at with his game. It is possible that someone will break him in Tests as he is worked out by the opposition but then we can always put the pieces together for him but frankly speaking, we don’t have to do too much as he is pretty good now.

PakPassion.net : Given his current success and potential ability to play in leagues around the world, what should Shadab’s priority be?

Dean Jones : If I were in his shoes, I would avoid playing too much Twenty20 cricket. Having said that, I would love him to play the BBL so that he can get some experience of playing in Australia. It’s not just about playing in leagues but about travelling and learning to stay away from home, learning to find new friends and that kind of stuff. He seems to have a good manager and a good bunch of people who can work with him. All in all, we just need to make sure we don’t flog him too hard, too early. But then, it also depends on how his Test experience goes. If all of a sudden, he starts to do well in Tests then that cancels out his involvement with a lot of the Twenty20 leagues. What he needs to do now is work on his fitness and also develop his batting as well. He has the ability to bat as we saw in the PSL where some of the sixes he hit were simply mind boggling. Also, in terms of attitude, all the boys love him in the team as he is a quiet and humble kid which is really nice. To me, he is a wonderful product of Pakistan cricket.

PakPassion.net : Many other youngsters have come and gone in Pakistan cricket but is Shadab Khan the real deal?

Dean Jones : He is the real deal for sure but it is imperative that such talented young kids have mentors around them who they can trust and work with. More importantly, the mentors have to be available to advise Shadab 24x7 as things can happen at any time of the day or night. This kind of support is important to steer these kids away from others who can tempt them to do silly and stupid things. All I can say is that you can have all the money in the world but what it comes down to is the respect that you get from people when you walk into a room based upon what you have done as a cricketer. We see that in the case of players like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed where the whole world admires them for their cricketing achievements. Let me assure you that they would have much more fun taking 5fers and winning World Cups for their country then having five million dollars in their personal bank accounts.

This is one heck of an endorsement from someone who has worked closely with him.

Amazing stuff about this young man - genius as DJ puts it.

WOW!! - I like the attention to details by DJ, looks like he worked a lot on him, he just talked about Shadab in this whole interview ?

I want Shadab in test squad, not just squad but playing atleast one test now on this tour, not year from now...

How will Yasir Shah take the inclusion of Shadab in test squad if this happened? Yasir Shah has not played much international cricket yet. I think its better for Shadab to concentrate 1 more year in ODIs and T20s before including him in test squad.

Did anyone on pp notice the change in Shadab khans run up, getting closer to crease and landing areas??? I know there's many knowledgeable people here

That's what Tauseef, Dean Jones and Wasim Akram worked with him on.

"Pure Gold" . . . !!

Only advice to the 18 year old Shadab Khan is . .

There is a complex world out there . . and with a realm of opportunities opening in front of him, and a lot of money waiting, this world will try to corrupt him . .

Keep your feet on the ground . . work hard! work smart! be humble! and be hungry!

Can Dean Jones get him contract at BBL ? That's a million dollar question ....

Why suggesting ways to end his career in 2 years? If he goes to BBL, on those AUS concrete slabs, he'll go for plenty - result is stop flighting the ball, bowl faster sliders & try to become 18 (12) batsman. If anything, PCB should block him playing any T20, apart from PSL (with compensation).

Well so far he's making the right decisions - has opted for a non-Pakistani agent/manager who is very experienced.

Its amazing how deano and co helped sort out issues with his run up .

Really makes you wonder what sort of incompetent coaches we have at the domestic setup and with the NCA.

Thats the place to invest

Fantastic insights from Jones.

The dance step thing is very innovative and I'm glad it worked out for Shadab.

Also great to see that this is a nice, humble kid as opposed to being a cocky one. A humble individual who can still show aggression on the field (where it matters) is exactly what we need.

+1 to this.

We have a serious player in our hands.

NCA is a holiday camp not an elite cricketing environment.

Most of the coaches there have been at the NCA for many years doing nothing.

I think Mushtaq Ahmed has done reasonably well with Shadab.

I think Mushtaq Ahmed has done reasonably well with Shadab.

Yes he deserves credit but he's not been there long. I'm referring to the regular coaches there who have been there for years.

Totally agree on that.

To your point, I will like to mention to you name of Nauman Anwar who seemed a promising batsman until his stance was messed up by our coaches.

Players can actually regress by this sort of coaching, We do need quality in coaching and guidance to produce quality players.

The point that DJ made about mentors - is so crucial that I wish I could pick up the phone and drum it into the PCB's head!

He is doing well and getting praise from all. At one point there is a chance that it may go into his head and those "stupid and silly" temptations may come into play

We need to mentor him 24x7 and watch him like a hawk.

Don't think Deano is aware of Zafar and Asghar.

Two of the best performers in FC and deserve to be ahead of Shadab.

Throw him in let's see what he can do at test level. No harm in trying him.

If I'm going to have a spinner in my team, I'd go with a leggie who can bat.

lovely to see a young leggi getting the attention he deserves :)

If we try to mentor him too much Pakistan will ruin him like we ruin everything. Talent in our country is best served raw. He needs to work with a select few coaches while everyone else should leave him well alone. God forbid someone like Aqib Javed gets his hands on Shadab.

I think you can nominate him in test squad but not include him in playing 11. Don't let others to judge him easily in CT2017. He can be Pakistan's trump card in that tournament. Play him rationally what you do with yasir shah in 2015.

He is talking about the mental side of things. An advisor. I do believe Amir would have been in a different situation today if that had been done for him in 2010.

If I'm going to have a spinner in my team, I'd go with a leggie who can bat.

I wouldn't care about their spin style, as long as they are quality.

Both Zafar and Asghar are quality.

Yeah, leggies do extract more spin and have more bite to them, but Shadab needs experience of playing 4-day cricket, before venturing into Test cricket.

No player has made his T20I debut with so much success as Shadab Khan of Pakistan. The leg-spinner has picked up seven wickets in his first two T20 internationals and led Pakistan to victory in both matches against West Indies. He was handed his debut in March in the first T20 international in which he picked up three wickets for seven runs. He picked two wickets in his first over itself. The debut performance was no fluke as he led Pakistan to second straight win in the second match, picking up four wickets.

The 18-year-old had impressed one and all with his performance and before this the spinner had impressed coaches in the Pakistan Super League. Dean Jones and Wasim Akram, coaches of the Islamabad United, for which Shadab played, were impressed by him.

“The very first time Akram and I saw Shadab in the nets, we looked at each other and said, ‘this boy is pure gold’,” Jones told PakPassion. “He is an interesting player to coach and I have said this before as well, that for an 18-year-old-kid he has the head of a 30-year-old on him. We spoke with him about, and gave examples of Shane Warne, whom he admires a lot. We also mentioned the technique of Mushtaq Ahmed to him as well. Then we also brought up the name of Stuart MacGill to show him how all of these spinners got close to the crease,” he said.

Shadab’s success has been mainly because of his wrong’un which troubled the batsmen in West Indies and also in the PSL. Most batsmen failed to pick it up and were either bowled or struck on the pads.

“We had to get him to straighten his run-up a bit to achieve this, we had to get him to train on special ‘dance’ steps to accustom himself to a straightened run-up. These were dance steps marked on the carpet of his hotel room so that he could practice before going to sleep and within a week or so, he was all set with this revised run-up and ready to go. He went from an Abdul Qadir type approach to the crease to a much straighter one now,” Jones added

Former Test batsman Dean Jones believes Pakistan have unearthed a "special" talent in Shadab Khan, a teenage leg-spinner who idolises Australia captain Steve Smith.

The 18-year-old stormed into record books last week with a stunning debut against the West Indies, picking up seven wickets in his first eight overs of international cricket.

In Pakistan's T20 series opener in Barbados on Wednesday, Shadab collected 3-7 from four overs to notch the most economical figures on international debut in the shortest format. He showed it was no fluke in the second T20, taking 4-14 to win a second-straight player-of-the-match award

While he grew up trying to emulate spin king Shane Warne, as a promising batsman and electric fieldsman as well, Shadab models his game more on current Australia skipper Smith, who began his international career as a specialist leggie. But a chance first encounter in a hotel elevator with the world's best batsman in Dubai, where Australia's preparations for their Test tour of India overlapped with the PSL in February, didn't quite go to plan.

"I didn't know what to talk to him as I was lost in his coolness," Shadab told ESPN of his fleeting lift ride with Smith. "By the time I could realise, the lift ride was over and he walked away, and that's it. "But I want him to recognise me one day.

" Shadab earnt his maiden international call-up on the back of a strong campaign for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League earlier this year. And Jones, who spent his second season as coach of Islamabad after leading them to the inaugural PSL title in 2016, recalled how he and Pakistan great Wasim Akram knew they'd witnessed a prodigious talent the first time they saw him bowl.

"The very first time (fellow Islamabad mentor) Wasim Akram and I saw Shadab in the nets, we looked at each other and said, 'This boy is pure gold'," Jones told PakPassion.

"He is an interesting player to coach and I have said this before as well, that for an 18-year-old-kid he has the head of a 30-year-old on him.

"He has pretty much hit the ground running and yes, he will get whacked a few times in his career but Pakistan have something special there."

Shadab's maiden PSL campaign yielded nine wickets at less than 20, with an impressive economy rate of 6.61, and his variations troubled a number of international stars. His wrong'un in particular proved a threat, with the likes of Kevin Pietersen and Babar Azam falling victim to it, while he also picked up the key scalps of Kumar Sangakkarra and Eoin Morgan during the competition.

His lower-order hitting was an additional bonus for Islamabad, notching a best of 42 from 24 balls against Lahore while he finished with a team-high strike-rate of 160.97.

Jones also recounted how he urged Shadab to channel the likes of Australia wrist-spinners Warne and Stuart MacGill, and revealed a unique method that helped to alter his approach to the bowling crease.

"He did come in with a few technical difficulties with his action and run-up, and we helped him with it during the PSL," the 52-Test former batsman said.

"We spoke with him about, and gave examples of Shane Warne, whom he admires a lot.

"We also mentioned the technique of Mushtaq Ahmed to him as well. Then we also brought up the name of Stuart MacGill to show him how all of these spinners got close to the crease."

"We had to get him to straighten his run-up a bit … to achieve this, we had to get him to train on special 'dance' steps to accustom himself to a straightened run-up.

"These were dance steps marked on the carpet of his hotel room so that he could practice before going to sleep and within a week or so, he was all set with this revised run-up and ready to go.

"He went from an Abdul Qadir type approach to the crease to a much straighter one now."

‘Pure gold’: Jones praises Shadab’s genius

Pakistan leg-spinner Shadab Khan has become the darling of cricket lovers since his debut performances against the West Indies in the ongoing T20I series and Islamabad United coach Dean Jones — the team for which the 18-year-old’s talent came to the fore in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) — is also all-praise for the youngster.

Shadab claimed a match-winning three-for and a four-for in his first two T20Is for the tourists against the Caribbean giants. Meanwhile, in the third T20I, which Pakistan lost by seven wickets, he bagged figures of 1-38 in 3.5 overs.

And Jones, when asked about the teenager’s persona off the field, told PakPassion: “I wouldn’t call him an introvert but he is a little shy and careful about the people around him. The main thing is that when he gets the ball in his hand, he knows exactly what he has to do. Now for a kid who hasn’t played that much cricket yet, it is amazing to see how he just seems to know where to bowl and has the confidence to back it up. I have no idea where that quality comes from but the guy is a genius.”

‘Pure gold’

Shadab had represented Pakistan with the A team, however, his moment to shine came when he was drafted in the squad by Islamabad as a reserve player for PSL2.

Jones, when asked to recall Shadab’s first impression on him, said the “boy” came off as “pure gold”.

“The very first time [Islamabad United director of cricket] Wasim Akram and I saw Shadab in the nets, we looked at each other and said this boy is pure gold,” reminisced Jones. “We also had former Pakistan off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed to help him out, which worked well.”

‘Complete package’

Shadab also showcased his batting skills in the PSL2 with 42 off just 24 against Lahore Qalandars during group matches and Jones believes the 18-year-old is one of the few complete packages discovered by Pakistan because he can field well too.

“We admire and talk about his bowling, but it’s worth mentioning that he is probably the best fielder in the Pakistan side at the moment,” said Jones. “On top of that, he can bat too and some of those sixes he hit over cover in Dubai during the PSL were just breath-taking. These are the skills which make him the complete package.”

Technical cleansing

Shadab’s claim to fame is the googly which he bowls with utter perfection and control and that too more often than expected to bamboozle the batsmen, however, the Australian legend revealed that it was not effective until the Islamabad United team management worked on the leggie’s action and run-up.

“He did come in with a few technical difficulties with his action and run-up and we helped him with it during the PSL,” said Jones. “We asked him to adjust his bowling and told him that his landing zones needed to be different and better so that he could get batsmen out with his leg-breaks instead of the wrong’uns which he was relying on a lot more before his stint at the PSL.”

So what were the faults in his bowling techniques? “He now bowls on the off and middle-stump line and the batsmen aren’t picking him at all. Initially, he was bowling wide off the crease, almost six inches to a foot wide, to try and get batsmen out using his wrong’un all the time. We had to get him to straighten his run-up a bit.”

And how did he improve that? “We had to get him to train on special ‘dance’ steps to accustom himself to a straightened run-up. These were dance steps marked on the carpet of his hotel room so that he could practice before going to sleep and within a week or so, he was all set with this revised run-up and ready to go.”

Test call

After such a tremendous debut, the talks of trying Shadab in the Test squad have already started making it to the discussion circles and Jones has said yes to the idea.

“That would be fantastic news if he is picked for the Test squad and why not?” asked Jones. “Let’s get him in there, he’s good enough. Look it’s possible he may not do too well in there initially but on the other hand, he may be very successful.”

There is a new teenage spinner on the international cricket scene who is making his mark.

Wasim Akram and Dean Jones referred to him as "pure gold" when they first saw teenage leg-spinner Shadab Khan bowl.

Now the 18-year-old Pakistani tweaker is beginning to make his mark globally, baffling batsmen with his guile and spin.

Khan made his international debut in last week's T20 series against the West Indies, capturing 10 wickets against the world champions before being named player of the series.

His main attacking weapon is the googly - a delivery that spins from the off side towards leg - baffling batsmen expecting the ball to turn the other way.

"I know my googlies are getting famous, but that's not the only one," Shadab told Associated Press from Guyana on Monday. "I really work hard on leg-spin and flippers too and will try to be the best in all three varieties."

Shadab caught the eye of the senior national selectors when he played in the Pakistan Super League for defending champions Islamabad United - led by Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

He took nine wickets in eight matches and was rewarded for his efforts by being fast-tracked into the Pakistan limited-overs squad for the series against the West Indies.

Pakistan's limited-overs captain Sarfraz Ahmed expects Shadab to play Test cricket in the near future if he continues his rapid progression.

"I believe that if I put in more hard work, I will definitely get more rewards in international cricket," Shadab said.

A reluctant spinner, Shadab comes from Mianwali which is also the home town of Misbah and Pakistan's World Cup-winning skipper Imran Khan.

In 2010, he shifted to Rawalpindi, the hometown of another Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar, and like millions of Pakistani youngsters his first love was pace bowling.

It was only when he was at the Siddique Akbar Club in Rawalpindi that he was spotted by the club's president Sajjad Ahmed, who encouraged him to try wrist spin.

"When I started playing club cricket I used to be a fast bowler," Shadab said. "But then our president of the club told me to start bowling leg-spin and I started working hard on this art."

Ahmed said he immediately knew Shadab had the talent to play at the highest level.

"He worked hard and I knew that he would get his chance at international level," Ahmed told the AP.

It wasn't long before others began to think the same. In 2015, Shadab was part of the Pakistan Under-17 team which played against England in the United Arab Emirates. He took 10 wickets in four one-day games.

Last year, he was the joint leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets at the Under-19 World Cup.

He was promoted to the Pakistan A team and made his first class debut against Sri Lanka, scoring 48 runs and taking five wickets. Then he followed that by taking 14 wickets and hitting 132 runs in the series against Zimbabwe A.

Shadab has been fine-tuning his skills under the guidance of United's coaches Dean Jones and Wasim Akram and also with Mushtaq Ahmed at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

"I used to bowl wide of the crease and later I was taught by Dean Jones which has benefited me a lot."

Former Australian international batsman Jones said he could not be more impressed by Shadab's attributes.

"The very first time Akram and I saw Shadab in the nets, we looked at each other and said, 'this boy is pure gold'," Jones told www.PakPassion.net.

"He is an interesting player to coach and I have said this before as well, that for an 18-year-old-kid he has the head of a 30-year-old on him.

"He has pretty much hit the ground running and yes, he will get whacked a few times in his career but Pakistan have something special there."

I have a feeling that this lad will hit the ground running in Test cricket also.

Spins it a lot, both ways, good variety.

Could be a nightmare for batsmen.

Deano is right.
Bowling mai to koi doubt hai nai and in batting I see long future partnerships of Sarfi and Shady.
Ace all rounder.

Ridiculous! Sliders should be an integral part of any leggie now.

Dean Jones, Billy Murdoch and Cathryn Fitzpatrick are the 2019 inductees into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.

The formal induction is to take place at the Australian Cricket Awards in Melbourne on Monday, 11 February. Murdoch will receive the honour posthumously.

Peter King, the Hall of Fame chairman, said: “These three inductees are very worthy of this honour and we are delighted to induct them alongside their peers and contemporaries."

Cathryn Fitzpatrick was the highest wicket-taker in women's ODIs before Jhulan Goswami took the record Cathryn Fitzpatrick was the highest wicket-taker in women's ODIs before Jhulan Goswami took the record
Jones is renowned for revolutionising one-day batting. Possessing a game marked by attacking footwork, rapid running between the wickets and electric fielding, he was the world’s No.1 ODI batsman in his prime, holding onto the spot for four successive years between 1989 and 1992.

In Tests, he averaged over 46, and compiled one of the great Test innings, when he battled severe dehydration and fatigue in the unforgiving heat of Madras (now Chennai), to make a double-century in the tied Test of 1986-87. Jones was also an important cog in Australia’s maiden World Cup triumph, in 1987, and was named by Wisden as one of the Cricketers of the Year in 1990.

Murdoch was Australia’s second Test captain, and one of the most prominent wicket-keeper batsmen of his generation. A predominantly front-foot player with a pristine off-side game, he was that rare cricketer to have played Test cricket for two countries, having represented England in a solitary Test against South Africa in Cape Town in 1892.

In all, Murdoch played 19 Tests in which he made 908 runs, averaging 31.31 and scoring two hundreds. Murdoch was present for the MCG Test between Australia and South Africa in 1911, when he died of apoplexy, suffered during lunch on the second day.

Cathryn Fitzpatrick was the world’s fastest bowler during her time, and remains the second-most prolific wicket-taker in ODI history, after India’s Jhulan Goswami. Fitzpatrick was a part of Australia's World Cup-winning campaigns in 1997 and 2005. She was also the first bowler in women’s ODIs to breach the 150-wicket mark, getting there in June 2005 against Ireland.

Fitzpatrick was also one of the nominees for the inaugural ICC Female Player of the Year award, which eventually went to fellow Australian Karen Rolton. She would however, go on to claim the Women’s International Cricketer of the Year award at the 2004 Allan Border Medal

"Faheem I dont know what he did during or before the game, he's run over a black cat or something like that, we had the ball falling short 1 cm off the fielder - that over could have changed the game for us but it didnt go his way"

"Misbah is a great player, dont get me wrong but I think the Pakistan community and the cricket fans.. I dont understand why Sami is a good enough captain as he was brilliant tonight"

Lets not forget that Shadab didnt just come on the scene because of some miracle of nature - he was actually good.

Fact is that he has or has been allowed to not develop as a better bowler and that is more a fault of the system which doesnt nurture good talent.

Part of the blame does fall on Shadab himself, primarily because he skipped domestic seasons to play in franchise tournaments.

At that age of 18, if he had spent more time playing FC Cricket, he would have found the control he needed to be a successful bowler.

The issue is that he has played a few decent innings with the bat which have led him to see himself as a batsman over a bowler, and this doesn't really help his case at all.

He's stopped spinning the ball, he's not being economical, and it looks to me as though most oppositions have figured him out.

For his own good, he needs to be dropped.

I wonder if the time is right to give Shadab a run in the Test squad?

absolute must, there is no long format specialist shouting for selection, so you cant ignore a leggie who can average mid 20s with the bat and is one of the best fielders in the team, if you want to play two spinners even more so.

I'd take Sajid Khan over him any day.

Shadab is nowhere near ready for Test cricket and he'll be an even bigger disappointment than Sajid.

Nawaz is far more deserving and he has the same ability with the bat.

What is striking is that Shadab Khan, despite being on the scene since 2016, has played just 17 first class matches and 6 of those are Tests. His last first class game was the Test match against England at Manchester in 2020.

I think he has potentially a lot to offer the Test team: an enterprising style of batting, a good fielder and able to potentially confuse tail end batmen with the ball. But surely he must play more first class cricket to develop his long-form skills.

I wonder if the time is right to give Shadab a run in the Test squad?

Nope, he is not good enough for test cricket.

1. His accuracy is still bad. His typical over is, 2 full tosses, 2 short balls and 2 very good deliveries. In t20 cricket he gets away with it because its an attacking form of cricket. But in test, you cant survive like that. Batsmen will smack a bowler like him for 4 in every over. He cant keep pressure on the batsmen. Nauman Ali isn't good, but as a spinner atleast he can bowl all his 6 deliveries where he wants.

2. His fitness is an issue. After every single tournament or series, we see Shadab Khan is broken. Either its medical illness or his hamstring or other issues. The guys body isnt strong enough to survive in test cricket where you are required to bowl 20 overs atleast.

3. He has played only 16 first class games since 2016. Why? Because of his fitness issues, plus, each winter he waits for a t20 franchise offer to come and hops on the first plane overseas. If he wants to become a serious contender for test cricket, he first needs to let go of the offers, stay back and play for the Northerns. That's what Shaheen has done and now look at him become the cricket of the year.

Shadab isn't willing to make such sacrifices. As a spinner, you need to play loads of first class cricket to learn the art of spin in 4-5 day cricket.

His accuracy is just slightly better than Usman Qadir. Usman Qadir has line and length issues, Shadab issue has always been length.

Nawaz is accurate but he isn't that good. He only has 90ish wickets of 50+ first class games.

Sajid should never play for Pakistan again truly is an awful bowler. Shadab is a massive upgrade over him in each department.

I wonder if the time is right to give Shadab a run in the Test squad?

I think so. He is a spinning all-rounder. As Pakistan has a long tail he can be very handy with the bat. Let's pick him in place of noman .

He doesn't have bad FC record. 68 wickets in 17 matches is good . PCB should invest on him , make him play FC regulaly and pick him.

Yes he is not a very good leg spinner , he has all the faults as you have mentioned but he is intelligent. If he works hard he can get out of these faults.

In a 5 man attack then yes but no in a 4 man attack.

Don't think Shadab has long format aspirations. He would be toiling away in the 4 day format and get plenty of overs under his belt to make a claim.

Yes definitely agree Shadab can average 30 with the bat but he needs to play domestic cricket were he is bowling 30+

The player sitting on bench is always better than the players in the team. Their stature grows without even doing anything.

I never want to see Sajid or Nauman get another Test cap but Shadab needs to play a full FC season first before returning to Test squad.

No he isn't a spinning all rounder he's a batting all rounder in tests he can play In SENA thoug.

Shadab needs to play a season of domestic cricket before he is considered.

This is soo trye, while i am a fan of shadab khan, he is highly over rated.

He plays only because of his personality and style. Bowling wise the guy is not consisstent with his accuracy

If that's indeed the case then fair enough he shouldn't be near the team because his mind isn't on it.

But on the other hand if he wants to make a career in test cricket, I'll have him in the team without a shadow of doubt.

Shadab adds a lot of value and allows the team the luxury of 3 seamers or 2 seamers & Faheem along with one frontline spinner.

pakistan need to be pragmatic here, will shadab forego t20 leagues to fight for a place in the test team, no chance, the pcb do not prioritise long format cricket enough for anyone within the system to do the same.

secondly, what will shadab learn at domestic level? nauman and sajid dominated local bowling rankings, but that counts for nothing at test level. how many first class games has naseem played to be back in contention for the test team?

if there is any long format cricket shadab should play, its A team cricket, but pak clearly dont want to have a regular season of A cricket, so how is he meant to develop if he plays 1 or 2 A games a year.

the requirement for players to play entire seasons of QeA before test selection insures that dynamic multi format players get marginalised and you end up with boring grinders in the test team.

he is also not fully fit... Shadab and Hassan Ali both carry niggles and continue to play t20 and league cricket here and there..

Also shadab never plays FC cricket, but still he can be in the test team if he is fully fit..

For the last 2 years he is been in and out of the team due to injuries.

The only reason Shadab plays is the other options are rubbish. Can you name who should play ahead of Shadab?

Sajid khan and nauman ali will be ahead of shdab khan in the pecking order for test no matter what.

Yasir shah is also ahead.

You can take alook at swepson and nathan lyon in this series. Swepson bowled rubbish. Full toss upon full toss, while nathan loyn landed them on the marks and got wickets.
Shadab khan is gonna be no different than swepson in test cricket based on the 11 first class games.

Wrist spin is the most difficult art in bowling to master, leggies mature late. Shadab has improved his bowling enough and now has far better control and is now good enough to play test .

Then 2 uncles should never play for Pakistan again. So that’s that. But Pakistan will pick them regardless. Yasir is also old but still miles better then these uncles. Since of spin bowling is awful Shadab should be in the test team. Decent bat and an excellent fielder even if his bowling is awful at worst it will be like these 2 uncles.

Even if we play shadab as the third spinner as his batting helps, problem is he breaks down easily. His body is too weak.

The guy is made of glass

Shadab Khan is not a specialist spinner. Pakistan doesn't have anyone good enough to be selected as a specialist spinner.

Shadab Khan is a spinning all-rounder to bowl enough overs to rest the quick strike bowlers as well as scoring roughly the same runs as a BJ Watling or a Mohammad Rizwan.

Now he finds himself in the same position as Krishna Srikkanth did after he missed the 1988-89 tour of the West Indies. You miss a bad series loss and suddenly find yourself a key player of the team you were recently dropped from (Srikkanth ended up captaining it!).

In my opinion, the failure of Sajid Khan and Nauman Ali now means that Shadab Khan is an automatic Test selection.

Times must be hard when shadab khan is viewed as the premier spinner option in tests, lack of fitness and nous means hes not ready for the long game just yet. yasir shah will be back before the next series starts

Pluss you can't compare swepson to Shadab as ones a all rounder and the other one is a spinner.

In the 4 years since Yasir Shah's 32nd birthday he has an away Test bowling average of 57.15, with 19 wickets in 9 Tests. His economy rate is 4.01 and his strike rate is 85.3.

Those are terrible figures which show that advancing age completely destroyed Yasir Shah.

In the same 4 years, Shadab Khan's away Test bowling record is actually superior. 13 wickets in 5 Tests, averaging 28.30 with an economy rate of 3.09 and a strike rate of 54.9.

There is a reason for this. Yasir Shah bowls with a lower arm which gives him more leg-spin but less ability to bowl a googly. On true tracks outside Asia he lacks the natural variation to get people out now that his leg-spin no longer rips off the pitch.

Shadab should be played as a middle order bat and a second spinner. He is too valuable to be discarded away. When Fawad Alam is eventually dropped, they should look at developing Shadab as a No. 6 and play him along with 4 other bowlers.

It would be interesting to see if Yasir bowled in a 5 man attack or a 4 man attack in away tests

Shadab seems like a better option than both Nauman and Sajid.

Also, Shadab is a leggie.

I think Shadab should be given a go at Test level.

I don’t think it’s the management more it’s the issue with Shadabs fitness that’s causing them to select the likes of Zahid and Naumaan or even Sajid.

Yasir Shah should be given a go if he regains his form, he was valuable asset.
