Lahore Qalandars entered PSL 10 as two-time defending champions, but their campaign has been derailed by a mix of poor performances and—most frustratingly—questionable captaincy from Shaheen Afridi. While Shaheen remains one of Pakistan’s premier fast bowlers ;), his leadership decisions this season are baffling, stubborn, and at times outright detrimental to the team’s success.

1. Bizarre Batting Order: Rishad Hossain Over Sikander Raza?

One of the most inexplicable decisions was sending Rishad Hossain ahead of Sikander Raza in last match against Multan Sultans on a batting track. Raza, a seasoned T20 campaigner with a proven ability to accelerate in the middle overs, was held back while Rishad—primarily a bowler with limited batting credentials—was sent in earlier.

  • Why was this wrong?
    • Raza has a strike rate of 140+ in T20s and is known for rebuilding or attacking as needed.
    • Rishad averages under 15 with the bat in T20s—hardly the man you want in a high-pressure situation.
    • The move disrupted momentum and cost Lahore the match perhaps as Raza ended up scoring a fast paced half-century and remained not out. But too little too late.

2. Underutilizing Sikander Raza’s Bowling

Raza is a more-than-handy off-spinner, yet Shaheen bizarrely refused to bowl his full quota of overs in multiple games. Instead, he persisted with struggling bowlers, allowing opposition batters to settle. Haris was taken to the cleaners by Yasir and Rizwan, and yet Shaheen went to him again.

  • Examples of mismanagement:
    • In one game, Raza bowled just 1 or 2 overs despite being economical, while part-timers or out-of-form bowlers leaked runs.
    • In last match, he wasn’t even introduced until the 15th over, by which time Multan were dictating the game properly.
Result? Lahore missed a key wicket-taking and run-saving option.

3. Holding Back Raza Until It Was Too Late

Shaheen’s tendency to overthink and delay Raza’s introduction was another recurring issue. Multiple times, Lahore’s other bowlers were getting hammered, yet Raza was held back until the death overs—when the damage was already done.

  • Why does this matter?
    • Raza is best used in the middle overs (7-15), where he can break partnerships.
    • Waiting until the 15th over to bowl him meant Lahore missed the chance to control the game.

4. Poor Field Placements Ignoring Opposition Strengths

Shaheen’s field setups were often reactive rather than proactive. He failed to adjust to batters’ strengths, allowing easy boundary options.

  • Common mistakes:
    • No protection for slog sweeps against spinners.
    • Deep point/square leg left open for ramp shots when pacers were bowling.
    • No mid-off/mid-on up when batters were driving freely.
Outcome? Lahore conceded unnecessary boundaries in crunch moments.

Conclusion: Stubbornness Over Strategy

Shaheen’s captaincy in PSL 10 is defined by rigid thinking, poor resource management, and a refusal to adapt. While he is an Ok bowler, his leadership cost Lahore Qalandars dearly.

What should change?
Trust proven players (like Raza) instead of overcomplicating tactics.
Be proactive with bowling changes, not reactive.
Study opposition batters and set fields accordingly.

If Shaheen wants to grow as a captain, he must learn from these mistakes—otherwise, Lahore’s struggles will continue and after this no one can tell me Pak was wrong to remove him from Captaincy post.

What do you think? Were Shaheen’s decisions the main reason for Lahore’s downfall, or were there other factors? Let’s discuss in the comments! ⬇️ #PSL10 #LahoreQalandars #ShaheenAfridi.
PS: Be respectful, we may disagree but let's be civil.

The first mistake I also pointed out in the match thread, not only Reza but also Billing should bat higher up.
Also taking Dr's without consulting his team on his own bowling last match was pathetic, especially when the ball looked to be clearly sliding away from stump. Afridi, Shadab and Babar are alike in their selfish streak.

Exactly, I missed the DRS one, Billings as well rightly pointed out but the DRS decision was totally bizzare, I have seen Players taking DRS and starting to walk off the field (Babar more than any one, 11 Times) but never a bowler taking DRS and going back to bowling position before even the replays start. He took DRS without a second thought as if was plumb in front of stumps and then started walking off. It was like saying "Hey, I am the Skipper, I can do whatever the hell I want".

I think someone should create a side-by-side graph of Shaheen's performance and his level of arrogance. As his performance has declined, his level of arrogance has skyrocketed.

LQ has been horrible in this regard because the franchise has in a way, fed his ego and whims even more, essentially giving him carte blanche with the team. There is no one to rein him in or hold him accountable.

Luckily, LQ are doing okay so there isn't that much criticism around him so far. But this season and the previous one have exposed his captaincy. He also lacks the ability to keep his cool during certain situations which makes him an awful choice as captain.

Yes SSA and LQ performance is going down they need to arrest the slide soon otherwise it will be chaos just like yesterday

Zaman & Rauf 2 overs 0/42

It's surprising they gave M.Naeem another game & not moved Shafique to open. Bring in Akhlaq or Asif Ali or even Jahandad Khan down the order.

1. Fakhar
2. Shafique
3. Daryl
4. Billings
5. Sikandar
6. Asif Ali
7. J.Khan
8. Rishad
9. Asif Afridi
10. Rauf
11. Shaheen

Individuals are responsible for their own performances too.
Even if they don't win the trophy this season Shaheen as captain won Lahore 2 trophies in just 4 seasons

When it comes to DRS Shaheen is following his FIL, he used to do the same

On the contrary Shadab has been an excellent Skipper this season. His field positioning, unselfishly holding himself back (as a bowler) when he fears it could loose the game and the bowling changes have been phenomenal to say the least.
If u think shaheen is a failure in captaincy than go watch babar azam who is the superstore of blunders.
I agree, Babar is also a failure, doesn't change the fact that Shaheen is also a failure as captain.

Not exactly. Just watch the second trophy win of Shaheen. If I don't let myself be blunt and call it a shameful fixing scandal, at least I'd say that victory was on back of terrible umpiring and worse performances by opposition not Lahore's brilliance, least of all Shaheen's decision making.

Captaincy not the issue . Tepiya bowling by Rauf and Zaman was the issue last night
Screenshot 2025-04-24 035933.jpgRemind me again how Well Shaheen bowled. He got lucky in his third over where bracewell was batting who wasn't playing well. That's also how he got a wicket. Needless review, brainless field positioning and to top it all arrogance as if he has won 10 matches on the trot. On the other hand Zaman got just 1 over in? Why was Sikander Raza not bowled? Why was Zaman not given a chance at redemption when Rauf who also leaked 20 in his first over was given another go?

That decision I can get behind. We should give chances to new talent.

His franchise owner Sameen Rana sings his praises that he had "eyes in his tears" after a bad performance.
Why can't the franchise owners and the management keep the players in check? Or they deem boosting the PR as more important.

I don't often watch PSL but I did watch that match. I too was surprised that Raza was not given enough importance. Rishad ahead of Raza with the bat was a ??? moment. Rishad did hit some 6's during the world cup but that does not justify having him ahead of Raza who is a batting allrounder - and can wack a ball properly.

Please tell me why Naeem is playing??? WHat are his credentials??? HYPE ONLY that is why??

Why is Raza not properly utilized (AGAIN)?

It's clearly visible that captains like Shaheen, Babar, Rizwan, Shadab are misusing their authority by deliberately under utilizing or improperly utilizing some deserving players.

Shadab is winning that's why noone is questioning him as of now but he is coming up in batting and not utilizing some bowlers.

These guys have sense of insecurity because if someone will perform their position will be under threat

We can not blame franchise owners on this one. They are after all businessmen not athletes, PR is their entire takeaway from PSL. PCB should keep players in check, when PCB behaves like a franchise protecting players from fair and due criticism, things get ugly.

Well but franchises can't make brands if their teams keep losing. They have team management who should keep the authorities of these players in check as it is the franchises who are paying them in this tournament rather than PCB. If the franchises keep defending the failing players, it's not going to help their team either.

LOL at shaheen doing all the shenanigans like sending asif as opener when you have a proper opener in the side.

Next game, we might see shaheen opening himself...

Forget Shaheen,

Why pick Kamran Ghulam and Tayyab Tahir to bat at number 7 and 8??

This mafia of 5 PSL captains is doing its best to neglect deserving players or those players who have potential to perform as much as they can. They will never let anyone succeed as their place may come in danger. It's a high time PCB & franchise management must come out and give strict warning to these selfish clowns otherwise quality of cricket in PSL will never improve

I haven't watched many PSL matches, but I have caught a few overs here and there. In one of the matches, Afridi was bowling. The ball clearly pitched outside, was going down with the angle, and was quite high as well. He immediately reviewed it without consulting the wicketkeeper, and the poor keeper (was it Sam Billings?) could only smile sarcastically.

It's good he is captain for a domestic team and not for the national team.

Shaheen has proven to be another captain who goes by big-name hype rather then need. He needs raza but he is not utilized properly like last season.

Naeem needs to go but he is playing because of I don't know parchi or hype or what but he is pathetic.

Shaheen is the Rana Bros golden boy. They can’t see anything wrong with him. Also, their meeting with IK who told them to make Shaheen captain as he sees him as the only natural leader has got to his head and their heads too.

Sameen and his bro are running this franchise as if it’s a restaurant in Southall.

LOL... agreed...

Shaheen has no clue who to send in. Who to select...who to drop.
