Shaheen Shah Afridi - is he signing-up too much for white-ball cricket?

Its all great reading about the fact that Shaheen Shah Afridi is being signed for county and that he is becoming wanted on the international league scene.

However, there will be a price to pay for this. For starters, there is a risk of injury in such fast-paced games, especially during leagues where time between games and recovery is limited. There is no care for the players in the way it would be in a national side. Shaheen is young and it is said that the risk of injury is high at such an age and care needs to be taken to ensure that he keeps himself fit. This sort of care can only be provided when he is with his national side and not with a number of sides in a year, each focused on their short-term goals.

And there is the danger of exposure to the wrong influences whilst away from home. Young and impressionable and without a mentor - recipe for disaster.

Thoughts?

he already has a dodgy arm, and a bit of a dodgy back. its obvious how he will want his career to develop, and until Pakistan starts paying its test players a proper income this will continue to happen.

I'm a bit worried by this.

He's just a young man and he's signing up to several leagues already.

PCB need to monitor this.

Several leagues? It’s only 2. Will be a good experience for him playing at The Hundred and the Blast out in England.

England is a dangerous place for a young Pakistani international cricketer. You can bet that the less savoury but powerful parts of the South Asian disapora are already chomping at the bit to get their hands on Shaheen. I hope the PCB takes steps to ensure there's no risk of this becoming another Amir.

Should be kept away from T20 leagues.

He has a lot to learn in Test and ODI cricket. But also has to earn money, PCB should have some incentives for skipping T20 leagues.

Without financial incentives it won't work.

Playing in England would be good for him. Hopefully he can impress and get a contract for first class games too the following year.

Up to PCB to give him NOC or not. He’s a young kid from a modest background...come on. It’s only natural any cricketer would accept an offer to play competitive cricket in England/Aus/SA. Don’t blame the kid...that’s how the cricketing world works today. He’s doing what anyone would do.

Completely agree and it be good for him. Can also offer him county deals for the future for first class games too.

Its not a bad idea for him to play some cricket in England. The more experience he gets from playing in Australia, England and South Africa the better but I would prefer it to be First Class rather than T20

Young fast bowlers should be kept away from T20 leagues. They need to playing more first class cricket to improve. Bowling 4 overs won't improve you as a bowler.

A lot of matches every 2 or 3 days, sometimes consecutive days. He's a prized asset for Pakistan playing all 3 formats and his workload needs managing.

Best part: he’s under the watch of the guy who overtrained his players day before a WC semi. Wasn’t it like 6 or 7 guys complaining about it?

I would have preferred for him to have played county cricket than the T20 stuff.

I am actually more worried about players playing so much county cricket in England. Recently, Amir came back from a stint in England a lesser bowler. He complained of fatigue at that time, when he looked ordinary bowling in the UAE recently. Abbas also played in England recently and has gotten injured and had to recover. Although he was not injured in England, I believe. But number of overs they bowl in cc is too much. PCB should make it so they can bowl a maximum of 16 overs / day in CC.

Should be more concerned how Waqar Younis and Azhar Ali handle him and Naseem, overburdening them with more overs can be dangerous for their careers as this management is'nt concerned young bowlers break down and get injured, they will also decline in pace. Someone needs to do work on his inswing into the right hander.

They have worked on it. He can bring it back in to the rightie now

Someone’s just been reading the scorecards on cricinfo. He’s been consistently swinging the ball back in this series if you had bothered watching before posting.

You are correct with regards to Azhar and Misbah’s management of pacers. The worst combo who are more likely to run these youngsters in to the ground especially with Yasir bowling tripe.
