PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and party president Shehbaz Sharif’s mother, Begum Shamim Akhtar, also known as Shamim Bibi, passed away in London on Sunday morning, MNA Pervaiz Malik confirmed to Dawn.com.

The news of her death was also shared by Attaullah Tarar, PML-N’s deputy secretary-general, on Twitter.

The cause of death could not be immediately ascertained, but the nonagenarian had been unwell for the past several months, PML-N MPA Azma Bukhari told Dawn.com, adding that her condition had become critical over the last week and she breathed her last at home on Sunday morning.

She was around 93 to 94 years old, said Bukhari.

Shamim Bibi had travelled to London in February earlier this year and had been living with her son, Nawaz, since.

According to APP, Prime Minister Imran Khan, federal ministers and leaders of various political parties have expressed profound grief over the death of Shamim Bibi.

Senior PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal also prayed for the departed soul. “She was a very pious and brave woman,” he tweeted.

I think the whole Sharif clan should just move to London, they will receive the best care here.

Commiserations to the Sharif family. Poor Nawaz first his wife and now his mother, both dying on foreign soil too - this can’t be good for the sher’s ailing heart.

May Allah forgive her sins for birthing two of the most morally corrupt and incompetent people to hold public office in Pakistan. I'll pray for you maghfirat.

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ‎,

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi rajioon

I'm sure one question that she will be asked is why did she not correct her two corrupt sons.

May Allah forgive her sins.

Playing politics over her own grandmother’s death… Amazing. Somehow, it was the govt.’s responsibility to inform her instead of her family!

What a friggin idiot. Daadi tumhari mari and government should have done what? Sent you condolence letters and flowers with a massive parade in her honor? Because she was a what? Madre Millat II? Why does the government have to inform you? Cant you dad afford to break the news to you over the phone? After fraudung billions from the nation, surely he can afford to make a quick call to Pakistan to inform you your 94 year old daadi passed away.

I mean what is she really trying to say here? She must really be a blonde!

Condolences, yes. But the billions in stolen wealth by her sons could not save her in the end.

Condolences to sharif family. But don't forget because of them many moms in Pakistan died and they didn't do jack about it to improve health care and standard of living. Nawaz is directly responsible for that. The current govt is not responsible for Nawaz's mom death.

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: The PML-N has suspended all of its scheduled activities until the funeral of party supremo Nawaz Sharif's mother, who passed away here in London earlier today.

"We have suspended all activities of the PML-N until the funeral" of Mian Nawaz Sharif's mother, party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Twitter, referring to Begum Shamim Akhtar as 'Aapi Ji,' or elder sister.

"May God give courage to the family to bear this tragedy. Aameen," she wrote.

Begum Shamim Akhtar, the mother of Nawaz Sharif, as well as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and the party's president, Shahbaz Sharif — had died earlier today aged 89.

An Alzheimer's patient, her condition had deteriorated over the past week and she could not regain her health due to old age.

PML-N workers in London gathered outside the Sharif family residence at Avenfield Apartments, where Begum Shamim Akhtar was staying.

Nawaz Sharif's mother was receiving treatment at a London hospital.

The body of the former premier's mother would be released after the Westminster Magistrates' Court coroner issues her death certificate, sources informed Geo News.

The Sharif family would make arrangements to transport the body to Pakistan for burial once the death certificate is issued.

Information Minister Shibli Faraz on Tuesday said there were no restrictions in place on former premier Nawaz Sharif, his sons and former finance minister Ishaq Dar barring them from coming to Pakistan to attend the funeral of the PML-N supremo's mother.

Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif's mother, Begum Shamim Akhtar, passed away in London on November 22. She was in her 90s and had been unwell for a month or so, sources in the party had said, adding that she had also twice visited a hospital in London for a check-up.

Arrangements are being made to bring her dead body back to Lahore within a couple of days to be buried next to the grave of her husband, Mian Sharif, at the family’s Jati Umra estate.

"They are welcome to come to Pakistan and attend the funeral," Faraz said in a tweet on Tuesday, warning the opposition of trying to politicise the matter.

"The narrative of state suppression is deliberate propaganda and an attempt to politicise this issue. Who are you trying to fool?"

On Monday, the PML-N sought at least a two-week parole for party president Shehbaz and his son Hamza to participate in the last rites of Begum Shamim. Both Shehbaz and Hamza are in Kot Lakhpat jail on judicial remand in a money laundering and assets beyond means case.

In an application to the Lahore deputy commissioner, PML-N Deputy Secretary General Attaullah Tarar said both Shehbaz and Hamza were leaders of the opposition in the National and Punjab assemblies.

He sought their release on parole for a period of at least two weeks to receive condolences and participate in Begum Akhtar’s last rites at their Model Town and Jati Umra residences.

Meanwhile, the Lahore DC office said it had received the PML-N’s application but that it did not confirm when the body of Shehbaz and Nawaz's mother would land in Lahore.

Deputy Commissioner Mudassar Riaz Malik told Dawn that his office could allow release of prisoners for 12 hours and that would only be possible when the exact timing of the arrival of the body was known. He said his office had already contacted police and jail officials for their report on the subject.

Begum Shamim had travelled to the United Kingdom in February against the advice of her doctors to see her ailing son, Nawaz, who is being treated for heart and kidney ailments in the United Kingdom.

Both Nawaz and Shehbaz could not attend the last rites of their father back in October 2004 as they were in exile in Jeddah and had rejected a conditional offer by then military dictator Pervez Musharraf in this respect.

However, Nawaz's daughter, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, has urged her father to stay back until his treatment is completed.

"I have requested Mian Saheb that he must not return. They are cruel people blind by vendetta from whom no humanity could be expected," she said in a tweet after receiving news of her grandmother's passing.

Nawaz, who was serving a seven-year jail term in a corruption case, had left for London in November last year after the Lahore High Court gave him four-week permission to seek treatment abroad.

He had given an undertaking to the court that he would return home within four weeks or as soon as doctors declared him fit to travel.

I hope nobody gives a son like Nawaz to any mother. He is the biggest coward the world has ever seen!

I'm sure she was a nice and noble lady, would have never thought her sons and grand children would turn out to be so corrupt, thieves.

The coward is scared to come back, he also missed other family funerals in the past, including his wifes.

Totally agree-But he said Mush stopped last time with his father, whats stopping him this time. The Cowardly crook doesnt even have in his destiny to bury his own mother despite his billions.

Should come back to attend his mothers burial. At worst he will be arrested and jailed, but at least he will be known as a good son.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb and PML-N's Attaullah Tarar were also present at the Allama Iqbal International Airport.

Scores of PML-N workers made their way to the airport as the London flight carrying Begum Akhtar's body landed in Lahore.

Can't believe that the man did not have the guts or the desire to attend his own mother's funeral. If he does not care about his own mother, do you think that he cares about you or me or normal Pakistanis? All he cares about is looting.

Coward Nawaz can not even show up to his mother's funeral. But his shameless supporters will defend him no matter what.

He knows he wont be allowed back. His mother has passed away, he will not risk his freedom

PML-N leader Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday said that he felt helpless in prison when he heard about his mother's demise.

"The world can see how I am spending my days and nights in prison. What can be more devastating than hearing about your mother's death while you are behind bars?" he said.

Shahbaz Sharif, along with his son Hamza Shahbaz, was released from jail on a five-day parole for the funeral of Begum Shamim Akhtar, which took place on Saturday in Lahore's Jati Umrah area.

Both, father and son, had been arrested and imprisoned after being charged in a money-laundering case.

Shahbaz said that he was not allowed access to a physiotherapist in jail, nor was a heater installed in his cell despite the cold.

"The government is exacting revenge on me. But this too shall pass," he said.

Speaking about the current political climate in the country, Shahbaz said that the PTI-led government has destroyed the country's economy.

"The condition of the economy is very bad at the moment. Every sector is at the brink of disaster," he opined. "Collective efforts, however, can improve the situation for which there is an urgent need for a national dialogue. We need to bring all political parties on the same page."

Shahbaz added that the PTI has "poisoned" national politics and whenever dialogue is initiated, it ends with abuses hurled at the Opposition.

When asked how the affairs of the country can be put into order, Shahbaz Sharif said he can only comment on the matter once he is released from prison.

"Right now I have been released on parole. Get me out of prison, then I can tell you how to fix the country," he said.

Badniyaat loser.

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Wednesday decided to extend the parole of PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz for one day which was ending today.

Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan tweeted that the provincial government has approved the PML-N’s application of extension in the parole of the opposition leaders.

“The Punjab government, on the directions of Chief Minister Usman Bazdar, has granted an extension of 24 hours in the parole of Shahbaz Sharif and Hamza Shahbaz,” Awan said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to extend condolences on the demise of the latter's mother last month, it emerged on Thursday.

The letter was forwarded to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad last week with a request to be conveyed to her father Nawaz, who has been residing in London since last year.

Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of Nawaz and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, had passed away in Britain on November 22. Her body was later flown to Pakistan and she was laid to rest at the family's Jati Umra estate in Lahore.

In the letter dated Nov 27, a copy of which was obtained by DawnNewsTV and confirmed by Indian High Commission sources, Modi conveyed "heartfelt condolences" to the former premier over his mother's death.

"Dear Mian Sahib, I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of your mother Begum Shamim Akhtar," the Indian prime minister wrote. "My heartfelt condolences are with you in this hour of intense grief."

Modi recalled his interaction with Nawaz's mother during his brief visit to Lahore in 2015, saying: "Her simplicity and warmth was indeed very touching."

"In this moment of profound grief, I pray to the Almighty to bestow strength upon you and your family to bear this irreparable loss," he added.

In a separate letter sent to Maryam on Dec 11 at her Lahore residence, Indian Charge d'Affaires Gaurav Ahluwalia requested her to convey the condolence message to Nawaz in London.

In December 2015, Modi had paid a brief surprise visit to Lahore on his way back to India from Kabul. He was received by Nawaz and both leaders had flown to Raiwind from Lahore airport in a chopper.

Modi then briefly attended Nawaz's grand daughter's wedding ceremony at his residence and held a brief meeting with his Pakistani counterpart at the time before departing for New Delhi.

This was the first time an Indian premier visited Pakistan in more than a decade.

Dialogue between Pakistan and India has been suspended since 2013. However, relations nose-dived after India illegally annexed occupied Kashmir on August 5 last year and Islamabad downgraded relations with New Delhi.
