Former England keeper Matt Prior takes swipe at Nathan Lyon after Headingley disaster

Former English keeper Matt Prior has taken aim at old rival Nathan Lyon following his poor finish to Australia’s series levelling loss at Headingley.

Lyon fumbled a key run out before being robbed of a match winning lbw because Australia had used up their reviews and Prior ruthlessly pounced on twitter.

Nathan Lyon 👀 #mothercricket #sleepwell
— Matt Prior (@MattPrior13) August 25, 2019

Prior clearly hasn’t forgiven Lyon for the remarks he made about the former England star back in 2017.

Reflecting on the 2013/14 series in Australia during which Prior was sent home due to stress-related issues, Lyon claimed the English keeper was “scared” to face Australian spearhead Mitchell Johnson.

“It was an unbelievable feeling knowing that they were broken,” Lyon said.

“Leading into (the third Test in) Perth we knew that they were, we knew Matt Prior wanted to fly home before the game started and he was one of the senior players. He was scared. It’s four years ago. I think he’s all right now.”

Prior shot back at Lyon’s comments in a tweet at the time.

Last time someone spouted a whole load of ** about me I stayed quiet not this time.To be clear I may have been playing badly fair enough but there was no way I was getting on a plane home. things heating up ... would be interesting to see if it translates to on-pitch behaviour esp given Mitch Starc might be playing the next game ....

Think popcorn maybe the need of the hour here!

Lyon made some very cutting comments last year about ending English careers etc.
A lot of Englishmen have not forgotten it and are really enjoying the payback. Hussain was also bringing up same line yesterday

"It's ridiculous, these cheap shots"

-Proceeds to use multiple cheap shots in the same conversation to belittle people-

Ah the Aussies are seeing England 'cross the line' again.

Only Australia are ever behind the line, every other team crosses it.

Even England fans weren't spared - they crossed the line with their booing of Smith - never mind what Aussie crowd and media did when England visited.

First class crybabies, with righteous indignation to spare.

Live in Australia and have to say they are boorish winners and sore losers. They can dish it out but cannot take it. Ok to send Broad home in tears or for Michael Clarke to say break Anderson's arm but never say a word back! I think world cricket hasn't stood up to them and now they cannot handle it.

Fully agree. It’s the reason why everyone loves to see them lose. They behave as if they are the ones to decide how the game should be played. They can sledge, behave in a boorish fashion and justify it as aggression . As soon as someone gives it back (eg Ganguly) they melt like snowflakes and call foul.
Lyon crossed many red lines with his comments about fellow pros — good he gets it back

Lyon's comments set him up for this. I've got zero sympathy. I remember how he'd once spoken of "head butting the line", apart from his personal comments at players.

Australian cricketers- when they sledge it's a man's game mate, but when they get it back some of them cry like pre-teen girls deprived of a dress.

You never know what could happen in the remaining tests. Lyon may have a wood over them. Although Stokes got the better of Lyon in this test, Lyon got the best of him 5 times.

Momentum is with England now. I feel England can now win this 3-1.

How is Lyon getting roasted? He was robbed of the match winning wicket.

Prior is coming off like a bitter idiot and Warne is a hypocrite.

So true.

Prior wasn’t sent home with stress issues. Trot was. Prior was near the end due to knee problems.

All this Twitter stuff is unedifying.

Never start something you cannot control. Shane Warne looking little silly now.

Aussie cricketers by and large are sensitive insecure souls, who love dishing it out but can’t take it when it is given back to them - this has always been the case.

There have been some exceptions, classy Aussies like Adam Gilchrist (an absolute legend of a player and a man), and Tim Paine who I like very much, but they are few and far between.

The utterly blockheaded likes of David Warner and Nathan Lyon are more your Aussie cricket archetypes.

Incidentally put the missed run out aside (which was bad enough) and I thought that Lyon had an absolutely shocking Test. When the 4th innings is set at a huge total and it is completed, the opposing team’s premier spin bowler should be one of the main people held to account for letting this happen.

Some nice spice to the proceedings and there could be some real needle in the next two Tests

Doubt it. Smith will be back. Starc or Siddle will replace Pattinson. People seem to get carried away, it took a once in a lifetime knock just to win them this game, a game where Steve Smith wasn't even playing.

Should it have even got that close......they rolled England for 60 odd runs and then let them score 369 chasing. Both teams are pretty reliant on a few players.

Its always the same with the aussies, they can dish it out but dont like taking their own medicine.

Well England were ahead at Lords too and if a 1.5 days were not lost to rain then i’m we would have seen an England Victory.

We all know by now , Aussies can give it but can't take it.

Warne should never have been a commentator or pundit.

Classless comments from Warne especially with how he responded to Chris Adams, somehow deeming his opinion to be irrelevant all because he wasn't a regular international player.

Prior waited god knows how many years for this, reading a few books and watching documentaries you will learn he was no angel himself, however the Aussies need to stop crying over spilt milk, this makes it more interesting and adds and added dimension to the contest. No one will want to lose now.

Just a couple of facts for those that wish to continue abusing me as a few of you seem confused. 1) I never got on a plane home mid series nor wanted to 2) my career ended because of a torn Achilles during the India series in 2014. I dont like Matt and I do not want to live in a world where Warne is the voice of reason ... but good ol' Matty boy is right here.

What is the Aussie code exactly? Be brutish, ugly, loud, claim to break arms and end careers but then, when they can't take it, label it immature?

Sounds like a bunch of wet behind the ear bullies to me.

Don’t make out as though England players take everything on the chin. They cry just as much as the Aussies.

Lyon has not even said anything and Prior brings up the nonsense. Warne is right, why should the focus be on Lyon comments when the game was so entertaining?

England always complain about Aussies not being able to take anything. If you play well against Australia, they will respect you. England are cry babies as well and when you play well against them, for instance the CT semi final they cry as well.

Cricket legend Shane Warne has been banned from driving for 12 months after he admitted speeding.

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court to driving at 47mph in a 40mph zone in a hired Jaguar car in Kensington last August.

The Australian, who was not in court for the hearing, already had 15 penalty points on his licence for five speeding offences from April 2016.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £1,845 to the court.

Deputy District Judge Adrian Turner told the court: "It may well be that none on its own were particularly serious but for points disqualification purposes the triviality of the offences is not to be taken into account.

"A period of 12 months is necessary for the purposes I have mentioned."

Warne, of Little Venice, west London, is regarded as one of the best bowlers in cricket history. The Australia leg-spinner took 708 wickets in 145 Tests between 1992 and 2007.

He was ordered to pay £775 in costs, fined £900, and must pay a surcharge of £170.
