Shannon Gabriel and Alzarri Joseph - West Indies Test bowling duo

Gabriel's been the standout pacer this series. He's been going from strength to strength every series.

Shannon is already 28 years old. Don't see him having much of a career. Alzarri is a terrific talent no doubt.

Just hope Gabriel can stay fit. Alzarri has a bright future, hoping selectors don't mess him around.

Impressed by Gabriel, can't be easy contending with large deficits, chasing the game a lot of the time, yet still providing consistent fiery spells, in testing conditions for quicks as we all know...

Holder needs to be dropped.

Make D. Bravo the Test captain and that would allow for a genuine pacer in the side, to back these two.

Any fast bowler can easily play until 34-36 if he focuses on fitness. You reach peak pace around 31-33 and then you start regressing. So, 6-8 years should be enough for him to become a modern West Indian great. Or at least he could play a role in the revival of West Indian cricket.

Miguell Cummins did well vs India, don't know what happened to him on this tour though. The 3 of them can be very good!

They've bowled extremely well on a lifeless track but haven't been supported by a third seamer. Holder's pies release all the pressure. Alzarri developing well. Starting to learn the game.

and their fielders have been awful too. Would have been better reading if the fielders held on to the catches.

Holder usually has his one good bowling performance a year against us. Always seems to unsettle us with his bounce.

But yeah he is the weak link. Add Cummins and/or replace Bishoo with a better spinner (averaging 42 on WI pitches is poor) and WI would finally have an attack capable of consistently taking 20 wickets in a Test.

Cummins impressed in his County stint with Worcestershire last year.

Holder is the weak link. None of my Caribbean friends rate him either and say he's bringing the team down. He wouldn't be playing if he weren't captain. You simply can't be playing an allrounder at 8. Never going to take 20 wickets like that.

Cummins is the obvious replacement.

West Indies are assembling a very good unit.

Will be a very competitive team in 12 months.

They are. There's a lot of potential in this team. Hetmyer and Hope are one big innings away from taking off. I really hope they can do it. Hopefully a bit of luck comes their way next game.

For bowling, they need Cummins as third seamer.

Holder needs to bat at 7 and be the 5th bowler he is too good a batsman for 8 and too weak to be a 3rd seamer drop Singh pick Cummins or a 2nd spinner.

Jerome Taylor just made himself available again- he would be worth a go given his experience and decent record.

Gabriel displaying exemplary attitude, says Estwick

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has come in for high praise from bowling coach Roddy Estwick over his work ethic, following his recovery from injury.

Speaking during the ongoing first Test, Estwick hailed the effort by Gabriel after the Trinidadian speedster took two crucial wickets during the third day of the contest at Sabina Park, to finish with three wickets in the Pakistan first innings.

“Shannon is now the leading fast bowler in the team and he is the leader of the attack. He has really accepted that responsibility and is willing to work hard for personal success as well as team success,” Estwick said.

“I’m confident that he’s on the right path and he will make a big impact. He’s fully focused and knows what is required at this level.

“Test cricket is tough, it’s a true test of your skills and I’m working closely with Shannon and the other bowlers as we have a long year of Test cricket ahead. This is just the first (Test) match for the year and we have an exciting year ahead.”

Gabriel has been nagged by injuries in recent months, and missed a portion of the West Indies tour of Australia in 2015-2016 with an ankle injury.

Last November, he also missed a crucial One-Day International during the Tri-Nations Series in Zimbabwe and in March he pulled up in the ODI series against England in the Caribbean.

“He’s a very hard worker, he’s always been a hard worker since I first worked with him in Barbados [at the WICB High Performance Centre] and it’s really good to see that effort paying off,” Estwick said.

Gabriel bowled with pace and penetration to have Younis Khan caught at cover for 58, and three balls later clean bowled Babar Azam for 72 after a solid century stand.

Younis’s wicket was Gabriel’s 50th in Test cricket, ending an innings in which the Pakistan legend surpassed 10,000 runs.

Pakistan made 407 in reply to West Indies’ 286 to carve out a first innings lead of 121.

“Those were two vital wickets at a crucial stage in the day’s play and in the context of the match,” Estwick pointed out.

“Younis is a world-class player, as you can see from his phenomenal record and Babar looked solid and was playing really well. So I was pleased with the way Shannon bowled to get us back in the game. We need to maintain and get better.”

Alzarri is unbelievably mature for such a young bowler. Gabriel has been a beast since the refinement of his action to align himself better. Holder needs to move up the order and Cummins should come in next game.

Gabriel was really hard to play for Indian batsmen too. Some of his spells to Kohli and others truly made me appreciate this bowler.

Gabriel could get in to pretty much any side in the world, guy is seriously quick and effective and his stats underrate him because he is part of a mediocre side. joseph is promising too. WI will always produce the bowlers its just a question of whether or not they can produce disciplined enough bats

Really enjoyed watching Gabriel and Alzarri bowl today. Reminded me of the old West Indies bowlers.

Roseau is a spin-friendly venue though, if you look at the leading wicket-takers there and they're mostly spinners. Maybe they'll bring in another spinner like Cornwall as I don't think Chase is good enough as a second spinner.

However Pakistan don't have too many shots against pace, we get easily bogged down by any accurate pacer so it wouldn't be a bad shout.

I'd definitely want a pace quartet of Gabriel, Joseph, Cummins and Holder in England though.

Gabriel is a good bowler , not great. Alzarri Joseph is not special either yet.

They were just playing against Pakistan

You answered it yourself. They don't have many good spin options. Cummins deserves to play the next test. It's unfortunate he's been sitting out.

Superb call by the OP. Chief Destroyer
With Cummins on the sideline they have a potent pace attack.
Their main spinner is a problem though.

Bishoo doesn't have much confidence in his googly so doesn't bowl it often. He also lacks the pace through the air that Yasir has.

He's also had problems with control, he was bowling too many freebies to our tail last night.

I don't know why Nikita Miller, WI's spin version of Sadaf Hussain in terms of domestic performances, keeps getting ignored.

Anyway this summer against England, I'd like to see Miguel Cummins who's impressed at Worcestershire to replace Bishoo, with Chase and Brathwaite being the spin options.

Whatever happened to Kemar Roach? He was quality as well. The raw talent is still there in the Caribbean. What isn't is competence on the part of the administration.

Yep that attack of 4 fast bowlers and Chase and Braithwaite as spinners will be fine.

He had a car accident in early 2014, and combined with other injury issues hasn't been the same bowler since.

He's lost his pace and was trundling in his final few Tests before being dropped.

Good chance for both to damage England in this series.

Gabriel has been seriously impressive. Has maintained pace for quite a long time. Also a bit dependent on his pace since he doesn't swing/seam the ball much but he has had an impressive career nonetheless.

The commentator mentioned an interesting stat about Gabriel having one of the highest percentage of un-assisted dismissals in the history of test cricket (bowled and lbw). Shoaib Akhtar is in the top 10 of this list interestingly.

9 wickets for Gabriel and 2 for Joseph - these guys have bowled their hearts out for their country

West Indies have a compelling pace attack with Gabriel, Roach, Holder and Joseph. Each brings something unique to the table. Might be the best attack they have had in decades.

world class attack. complement this attack with good batsmen from india, australia etc then this team would smash everyone.

roach- world class. one of the best in the world in tests
Gabriel- great support bowler
holder - amazing all rounder almost like stokes. stokesthe better batsman though.
Joseph- fantastic, tall, burly bowler who is joffra esque with serious potential.

Imagine if they actually had joffra as well rofl.

As Joseph claims the wicket of Root with smart variation of release points, Gabriel has gone off injured after struggling the whole morning. Should he have been rested?

Great bowling attack. Decent batting lineup but better in 4th inning.

Roston Chase is also a quality player, does the job with both bat and bowl.

Gabriel has been superb.

West Indies now have a solid pace attack in Test. They are still quite ordinary in ODI though.

Joseph injured and Gabriel looked exhausted.

Not a great day for them.
