A 28-year-old man is facing several charges following a hate-motivated incident at a Markham mosque last week.

The Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) says on the morning of April 6 an individual came to the mosque on Denison Street and upon entering, apparently tore a copy of the Qur’an while directing racist and Islamophobic rants toward worshippers.

According to officials, the centre was much busier than usual due to Ramadan.

“The individual, upon exiting the mosque, then attempted to run over or strike worshippers with his vehicle,” the society said in a statement.

“We are deeply troubled by this incident, especially as we near the anniversary of the London Terror Attack, where a family in London was run down in an act of hatred.”

Peel police say 28-year-old Sharan Karunakaran was arrested in Toronto on Friday. He has been charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and dangerous driving.

Police say they are concerned there may be other victims and have asked anyone to contact them.

“We’re concerned about the brazen nature of this incident and investigators are worried that, perhaps, there may be other incidents that have taken place at other mosques or at other public events where people may have been treated in a similar fashion,” Sgt. Clint Whitney tells CityNews.

The local member of Parliament, Trade Minister Mary Ng, says she was “deeply disturbed” to learn of the alleged attack.

The incident, which took place as worshippers had gathered during the holy Islamic month of Ramzan, was condemned as an “Islamophobia-motivated attack” by several officials.

Sharan Karunakaran, 28, was charged “with several criminal offences after a suspected hate-motivated incident at a mosque in the City of Markham,” the York Regional Police said.

Later in the day, Const. Caroline Chevrefils said the force's hate crimes unit would investigate because the incident occurred at a place of worship, but she said police still did not have evidence it was a hate crime.

Forum president Samer Majzoub said police should investigate whether the alleged attack was motivated by hate, adding that the break-in was not the first time mosques have been targeted in Canada.

"There are many explanations, this I know," Majzoub said. "But the fact of the matter is it is a mosque that was being attacked, its worshippers who've been attacked."

Anecdotal? Oh bhai I live less than a mile from where it happened. They came to attack two masajids but were stopped both times. I can show you the story links and even tell you where the masajid are. They were stopped both times by the cops.

I've seen the videos and spoken to eye witnesses. Way more evidence than just anecdotal. There is also cctv footage of them attacking a lone Muslim and testimony from a traffic warden who was attacked for being Muslim. These are all on the net and social media.

Richmond Hill man arrested in alleged hate-motivated assault at Markham mosque days after a similar incident in the city

York Regional Police have arrested a Richmond Hill man for his alleged involvement in a hate-motivated assault at a Markham mosque on Sunday.

The incident occurred three days after a similar assault at another mosque also in Markham.

In a press release Tuesday, police said 47-year-old Mohssen Bayani is facing three assault charges and one charge of mischief under $5,000.

According to the release, Bayani blocked the entrance to the mosque, located near Bayview and Proctor avenues, with his car.

Bayani left his car and yelled “derogatory slurs” at the worshippers and assaulted several people before driving away, police allege.

Police said the incident is not connected to another alleged hate-motivated assault which took place at a different Markham mosque last Thursday.

Police said it worked with its hate crime unit to identify Bayani, who police arrested just after 8 p.m. Monday.

Bayani is set to appear in court on May 17 and is not currently in custody.

Investigators believe there might be other victims and are encouraging anyone with information to contact police.
