The greatest fictional character ever created! Conan Doyle was a literary genius, creating the most iconic pairing in ficiton history, Watson and Holmes, and who's books I've always loved since a kid. He didn't just create the most iconic protagonists, but Moriarty is my all-time favourite villain. The Final Problem has to be the best book I've ever read, Holmes vs Moriarty, simply brilliant!!

More recently, the BBC TV show I think did a fantastic job of bringing the old tale into the modern world, and did a great service to the character and stories. I like that they took it in their own direction and didn't just recreate the book stories word for word, it made it a lot more interesting, but they always kept the books and Conan Doyle's works in mind, making constant references and easter eggs to the books. I loved it!

Any more Sherlock Holmes fans on PP? Let's discuss!

Are you referring to the series created by John Hawkesworth in the 1980s, with Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes and David Bruke as Dr. Watson? That is my all time favorite TV series! Even Arthur Conan Doye would have loved it. Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Holmes was exactly as what one would imagine while reading the book.

Ah sorry for the ambiguity, I was referring to the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman one. I’m a bit on the younger side 😬

It came in my mind first but there were multiple Sherlock series,
:))That Sherlock series made me fan of Benedict.

A highly enjoyable series. Brett is my favourite classic Sherlock and Cumberbatch makes a good contemporary one.

The Granada TV one was better, too much extraneous stuff in the recent one

Well I've got to find something to do during lockdown so I'll definitely try it.

Conan Doyle was a big cricket fan, he was an MCC's member at Lords. Supposedly he named Sherlock and Mycroft after a bowling pair he watched at Lord's in 1885, Frank Shacklock and William Mycroft. What an appropriate coincidence we're discussing Sherlock on this website.

I have read study of scarlet & sign of four, also couple adventures of Sherlock Holmes recently.

Will surely check out classic TV series first before trying out newer one with banadict.

Right now I have collected some comics & graphic novels of Sherlock Holmes from internet. so I am planning to finish them first because for me it's easier to read with vivid illustrations & drawings.

Without doubt, one of the best and most memorable characters ever created in literature. Don't think anyone else has been portrayed more in film and television history.

Didn’t much like it. Moffat showing everyone how clever he is. No heart to it.

Nobody ever replaced Basil Rathbone for me.

Think I read The Sign of Four decades back. Didn’t really grab me like some other Victorian literature.

I saw Brett play Holmes in a two-handler in the West End. Plot was that Moriarty was a figment of his morphine-addled imagination to stop him getting bored.
