Mumbai, Jan 25:* Former Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar underwent knee replacement surgery in Australia. This was confirmed by his surgeon David Young.*
Speaking exclusively over his mobile from Australia, Dr. David Young says, "Shoaib underwent knee surgery on Saturday".*
"The operation was successful and he is cheerful. He will be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday".*
Later, speaking from his hospital room, the ex-pace bowler said, "I am recovering well and hope to be fine now".*
This was the second time Shoaib had to undergo surgery in Australia.*
"That was some ten years ago when he underwent arthroscopic surgery. Recently, Akhtar was having terrible pain and we had no choice but to replace the knee", Dr. Young added.*
He is specialist in Sports Injuries, Hip & Knee Surgery.**
Dr. Young is popular among sports people and has treated several cricketers all over the world. A good-friend of world's highest wicket-taker Muthiah Muralitharan, Dr. David Young has been doing lot of charity work in tsunami-affected parts of Sri Lanka.**
A keen follower of the game Dr. Young had concern for India's losses in the current ODI matches against Australia. "Team India did play well but the team was short of luck", he said referring to the series result.

It would be interesting to know whether it's a partial or total knee replacement - I'm suspecting it's a unicompartment knee replacement.

Wish Shoaib a smooth recovery!

I hope a speedy recovery for the man who inspired many with those bullet like deliveries.

He said in an Interview that he could have opted for this surgery during his playing days but the doctors were like you will definately not be able to play again so it is better for you to delay this till your retirement.

Shoaib Akhtar has Ehler's Danlos Syndrome. His hyperextensibility is due to lack of collagen 3. There are other problems associated with the disease, so unfortunately this might not be the end of his troubles.

He should have listened to all the great fast bowlers who told him to cut down his damn run-up.

He put twice as much work on those knees as he needed to, and it halved his career output.

Are you a doctor? He claims running in from 40 yards or 15 yards was not the problem, the problem was the pressure jumping and landing at the crease placed on his knees.

What prevented him from walking until the age of 6?

Respect Shoaib Akhtar. And despite all these injuries he always ran like there is no tomorrow. Bowled each delivery as fast as his body would let him. A passionate cricketer, if there ever was one :)

He may not be a perfect poster boy, but gotta give it up for Shoaib. His life story is amazing and should be made into a movie for sure! Could not walk at 6 and became the fastest bowler in the world. Pure determination and passion in this guy.

He also single handedly kept our pace attack afloat in the early 2000's, our next best pacer until Asif and Gul came around was Mohammad Sami! I remember our pathetic pace attack in those days - Akhtar, Sami, Razzaq! But Akhtar kept performing and kept up the tradition of great fast bowling until new guys, Asif, Amir came along.

I wonder why didn't he get this knee replacement surgery during his playing days?

Surely the strategy of just draining the fluid from the knees, using painkilling injections was never going to be a long term fix so why not take the risk and have a knee replacement surgery which would provide a lasting solution?

I believe Dr Nauman asked him once in an interview and he responded that sports medicine was not that advanced back then and very few doctors specialized and dared to do knee replacement surgeries back then and if he had risked it and if something went wrong it would have been curtains for his career for sure.

To this day, I am of the firm belief that the hot air that got trapped (inside his head) by 'Khushamdi and opportunistic Friends' around him messed him up as well as the PCB not handling him properly in his earlier days!

And to top it off, that doctor who advised him to bulk up, helped mess up his knees for good. Had he remained athletic (like in his earlier days and in this video as well) and just strengthened his core back, legs, shoulders muscles, he would have had a more successful and longer career than the mere 177 some wickets he got in tests!

his friendship with Salman Khan was to blame for his 'muscle' obsession

'Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane'

Naah, I used to have long arguments with Savak here and he found this weird explanation from that doctor that 'His rib bones were grinding with some other part of hisupper back or something' (something crazy like that), so that 'Doctor' advised him to bulk up; rest is as they 'History', Akhtar was always looking like a baloon after that and breaking down regularly after every come back!

Like I said earlier, depending on which side of bed he wakes up on, his views change from one end to the other end...he tries too hard to impress/show affection to the Indians (same for all non-Pak sources that can dangle some money in front of him) and ends up looking like a fool/idiot!

When he was young, he was more passionate about playing/achieveing something, as time went by, he started acting like a diva who was too big for his/her own shoes. I bet if someone looks deep in to this disabled and yet played disabled cricket claim, the story will turn on it's head as well!

To all those taking a dig at him for pointing out Sarfaraz's lack of fitness need to go through this thread

The point is that he is being badtameez about a fellow player and someone representing Pakistan, and that has nothing to do with his knees as that part comes from another area of the human body.

He was not being badtameez at all against Sarfaraz. Sure you can say he was Badtameez against Misbah in the 2015 ODI WC but not against Sarfaraz, to the contrary he was very restrained and polite.

Wrong Dr Tauseef Razzaq has confirmed the same, the images and x rays dont lie. His fellow players have also corroborated the medical issues.

He could have said the same thing in a more civil way: ‘Sarfaraz being the leader needs to lead by example. He should fix his fitness issues because this is unacceptable in international arena’. Instead of making personal attacks.

I don't agree, Sarfaraz has let himself go for the last 2 years. He needs some tough love now

As per Shoaib Akhtar he is getting back in shape (probably for another All-Star Cricket series) and says he will show people that he can still bowl at 150+ kp/h :akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar going for a second knee replacement surgery. I love his digs against Amir who is complaining about fatigue, workload at the age of 27.

Shoaib was a warrior unlike these chickens

What a superstar he was.

If these procedures of replacing the knee are indeed going to make his knees pain free, why didn't he opt for it during his peak playing days?

I have a knee replacement (at the ripe old age of 22, though mine is more complex than Shoaib's as it was due to a fairly serious issue) and I running is heavily discouraged. My consultant told me that it can wear down the prosthetic very fast. Granted, Shoaib's is going to be a simpler prosthesis, but I'm sure the high impact over the years wouldn't be a good thing.

The most entertaining and polarising player we have produced. But still good to hear him speak sense

This is what I have read. He complained in interviews that it is painful for him to run but at least he can walk pain free with the new knees at least something he is most grateful for.

What a player . What a man

Gave his 100 percent in each stride .
Still many doubt him
Think if he had better support from his batsman he could have been in more match winning places

Loved this man on the field. When he had the ball in hand you watched in awe. Wish I could of seen him in his prime live! I to this day believe had he played the semif finals in mohali. We would of won the World Cup.

That was a great video from Shoaib.

I don't think we'll ever see anything as exciting as Akhtar's bowling. The long run-up, crazy pace, intimidation, and celebration were just perfect.

Sorta kinda tragic that all of these bowlers emerged in a similar timeline. 90's and after that the genuine pacers from Pakistan dried off.

Zahid, Shoaib, Shabbir (even though his action was a joke), and even Muhammad Akram were pretty quick and could easily clock an average speed around 90mph.

He's totally right about the dedication of the players. Most of them are - from a distance - only keen on making money, no interest in legacies or playing/winning tough overseas series. Almost seems that these days the Pakistani cricketers come with a shelflife of one to two seasons. Anyone having any hint of a genius gets himself either banned, or loses head and focuses on becoming a social media brand.

We are lacking the blood, guts, and glory type of cricketer (ala Stokes, a recent exmaple) and it's really hurting our cricket. Soft players, playing ok enough brand of cricket and living a life of comfort outside of cricket. No one is willing to be great, or they seem too limited to become one.

It'd be nice to get Akhtar in the system, he may not be one of the smartest tools in the box, but we need some fire in the team. Enough of the "bhai culture" and moly coddling fragile egos of the wannabe superstars who are just mediocre at best.

You lost the semi-finals due to your batting and poor fielding. Bowlers did their part. And Akthar was almost finished by then.

Wish him luck but doing a video on Twitter - just before his op....

These are very risky operations and not a joke, very few doctors agree to do this and provide a guarantee of a successful result. His pain and discomfort must be massive for him to take this step where the strongest pain killers he could find must be ineffective.

Unfortunately the first month after operation is going to be even tougher being stuck in a room, on crutches and having to pay numerous visits to the doctor post op followup. I hope he has a lot of good friends over there to give him quality company.

Apparently his mother suffers from the same problem and has had the same surgeries

People of South Asian origin in general seem to have issues with their knees. Almost seems genetical.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar underwent a successful reconstruction knee surgery in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday. Akhtar posted a video on his twitter handle to give the update and he also vouched to recover soon.

“Alright! my operation has been done and it went off quite successfully and I’m recovering. I’m in pain but not in a lot of pain...Anyway, wish me the best...I will recover soon,” Akhtar said in the video.

Before the surgery, Akhtar had requested fans to pray for him as the decision to undergo a complicated surgery was a tough call to make. “I am going to Melbourne for my knee reconstruction. The doctors are saying that it will be a six to seven-hour surgery. I should not have to get implants at my age. I am only 44. I should have got this done after 60 but this is happening now.”

Akhtar said the decision to undergo the operation was taken after the pain increased.

“It has become necessary to go for its remedy now. I’ve left my family. I’ve left everyone and this is not a very happy feeling. But this is also important to get my knee sorted out,” Shoaib - who has over 1.5 million subscribers on his YouTube channel - had revealed earlier.

Akhtar, who is considered the world’s fastest bowler of all time and nicknamed ‘Rawalpindi Express’, retired from all forms of cricket in 2011. He is now analysing various cricketing events on his YouTube channel.

The 44-year-old played 46 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan in which he scalped 178 and 247 wickets respectively. He also took 19 T20I wickets in 15 appearances.

Akhtar played his last international game, an ODI, against New Zealand in 2011, in which he bagged one wicket.

What does he mean by his running days are over? When he will get total knee replacement will he not be able to run?

He must be in a lot of excruciating pain to have made this decision to opt for a total knee replacement. Even reputed surgeons who have experience and success with these surgeries ask you to think twice, thrice before going for it explaining the pros, cons that you will not be able to exert pressure on the knee which means no running or perhaps leg extension, leg press excercises, squats in the gym and that means a lot of belly fat going forward.

Sad situation but he made the decision for a reason

Total knee replacement is only indicated in stage 3 or stage 4 knee joint injury(degenerative changes in knee basically). 10-15 years ago, you might have said the surgery was life altering but now athletes get it done and return to 70% of their action. The Undertaker underwent hip replacement surgery back in 2017 which is something far more extensive than knee replacement (at the age of 52) and returned to wrestling a year later.

running on treadmill and concrete and other hard surfaces is the #1 reason behind knee issues among athletes

Ugh, this means that we will be hearing about his knees for another 10 years.

Lol, why don’t you pray for his wellbeing (and for others of course) instead of complaining?. I often don’t agree with Shoaib, but when it comes to health you put everything else aside and wish them all well.

no gloves

non sterile, dirty couch

no aspiration to check joint fluid

injecting steroids - great set up for infection

running on treadmill and concrete and other hard surfaces is the #1 reason behind knee issues among athletes

Running, even on hard surface by itself does not cause knee problem . Yes it can aggravate knee injury if someone already has knee injury from other cause . Most of the long distance runners including marathon runners run on roads and they hardly ever have any knee problem. Treadmill causes even lower impact while running and does not cause knee problem.

Shoaib probably had some knee injuries which got aggravated from his very high impact on knee bowling action . Smart fast bowlers do right kind of exercise and fitness level to avoid knee problem .

im sorry, are you an orthopedic surgeon? do you regularly perform knee arthroscopies?

marathon runners, sprinters less often football players and soccer players end up with knee issues due to cartilage wear and tear esp. after weight gain in 50s and 60s.

Go ask your local orthophedic surgeon.

Elliptical trainers were created specifically because of impact injuries from jogging and running on concrete.

Ellipticals are impact-less and therefore recommended. Swimming is better than both running and elliptical.

Between my wife and I, we have run a total of 25 marathon all over the world and countless shorter distance races . We run on regular basis . And, we do have an orthopedic surgeon we consult when needed for an injury and discussed the matter with him multiple times , a very experienced orthopedic surgeon. I'm also in healthcare, so I have a good knowledge on this subject.

Those knees did need repair, hope he takes things easy now at this age. Nothing more to prove, wish legend luck.
