Shobby got a proper oppurtunity at no 3 after a very long time and he proves himself on
the very first oppurtunity provided to him. Where are the haters gone?

I am really happy for him that he is in good form, and I hope he replicates in the ODIs vs Sri Lanka.

Absolutely! Proved himself against a giant like Zimbabwe in Pakistan. Definitely deserves to be a part of the ODI side till the next WC.

Sure. Also he he is the right and perfect no 3 to groom for the wc in 2019 in eng.

He proved in the ct in eng in 2013 why he should be in the team.

Lets see how he does when he doesn't come in with 160 on the board. Happy for him though.

Finally a score above 30 after 6 years.. 6 years of 0s, 10s, 15s.

Managed to cross 50 today, and he has suddenly proved himself, must be a feat against the ATG Zimbabwe attack on Lahore track.

Haters can't see the next Sachin scoring and have gone into hiding.

Such minnow mentality has given us such players, and we are deservedly never ranked top 3 in the last decade.
Mamoon seems to be celebrating as well, so I guess this minnow mentality has gone into him as well. :akhtar

Agree,he's cemented himself in history as one of the greats.

We'll all remember where we were when he crossed 50 vs Zimbabwe.

Definitely proved himself today! Effortlessly worked around the malnourished Zimbabwe pacers. Should play for all 3 formats for 5 more years IMO.

if you dont score people bash you, if you score people will still bash you

Top class stuff from Shobby, so happy to see my favorite cricketer from the 2004-2008 era back to his best. I had pretty much given up on him.

Hope he continues this rich vein of form.

Proved himself is a strong statement.
He has a long way to go, but this is a good start.

Credit to him, he's played well today but these kinds of thread are OTT, especially the one where he is Pakistan's greatest #3 and best talent produced in last 16 years.

How many of our batsmen got a 100 in the cwc 15 match they played against zimbawe?
and how many of our batsmen got a 100 when they played against bangladesh?

And how many times has he batted at no3 during that time? pls do answer

Anyone would have scored against zimbo bowling and it was his 3rd chance after 2 failures lets see what he does against sl

Haters have gone back to hibernation as usual.

Fantastic comeback under pressure, the media, management, all wanted him to fail but he showed them.

Can already see him carrying the world cup trophy in 2019 after scoring a similar match winning 100 but at that time it will be a much bigger stage.

I hope he signs off like Imran Khan, carrying the team to the trophy in England and then signing off. He will be written in history books throughout Pakistan and more and more parents will begin naming their sons (maybe even daughters, who knows) Shoaib in his honor if that happens.

The higher ups in the cricket world already denied him the world cup 2011 where he would've smashed his punching bag bowlers vs India, but now he set to take Pak to victory in 2019.

How many ridiculous threads like this need to pop up after one good outing in years?

It is still much much better for Pakistan cricket as a whole for Babar Azam to play over one of Hafeez/Malik. That's just fact. And the longer that the blind love for one player goes on, the more it hurts our long term prospects.

he has underachieved massively so far but still has time to go down as one of the great pakistani masters. what is really excites me is that he seems to be embracing the 'old man' role in the side and is guiding the youngsters along.

This...
Sad but true. Fans getting going over the top is understandable but in Pakistan, selectors too get carried away.

Bring back Farhat and Yasir Hameed as well and keep playing Sami to make sure no stone left unturned for next WC.

Consistency needed against bigger teams. I will hold my views until then, but happy for him.

He scored on a pitch where zimbabwe made 334...

Came in at 170/1 on the flattest pitch Ive seen in a long time.

But he proved himself?

It was his first 50+ score in 5 years!

I think he is a ttf now, will only give a good innings every 20 matches or so. But who knows, time will tell.

There must be more posts on PP discussing Shoaib Malik than the number of runs Shoaib Malik has got in his career.

Let's see how he fares against Sri Lanka to find out whether this is not another false dawn, great innings or not.

The World Cup is in England and I can tell you now- he will fail. He will hide down at number 5 or 6. Heck - (hopefully we qualify) we will see it in the CT.
Isn't he the one that would always get injured for the oversees tours?

Exactly the same feelings for me

when did he get a chance at no3 or no4 in those years?

can u list some tours in which he got injured?

Obviously I do not remember them all but for some reason I seem to just remember being on tours and not playing due to injury.
That is why I asked the question.

SA in 2013 comes to mind and he also missed last test v India 07 which was must win

He always scores big against India so I don't think that he would sit out against them without a reason. Which match against SAF?

I don't think this was his choice. It was another stupid decision by the PCB

Well done guys, you called out the 2015 comeback for the FRAUD it was unlike his blind fans.

We could have groomed ANY young Pakistani batsman for those easy ODI series against Zimbabwe (home and away) and depleted Sri Lanka team in 2015 on pancake pitches. Literally the easiest transition into international cricket.

But nooo, we HAD to give this mediocre senior yet another comeback.

And here we are four years later having paid the price as the comeback inevitably ended in failure. We never ever learn.

I hope this was sarcastic

Like him or hate him, Umar Akmal can consider himself very hard done by the fact that he couldn't buy a place in the side because of this incompetent oldie with an average just scraping just above single figures, who simply cannot play pace outside the SC to save his life.

Only in Pakistan would you invest in a 35 year old with a crap record in England at the start of a WC cycle.

Yup!!! only on pakistan... Its better to send him back, will be better for the dressing room.:moyo

We invested in dhoni.
SA invested in Amla.
BD invested in Mashrafe

Don't compare with Dhoni with Malik . Dhoni is one of the best ODI batters of all time. He is still has a use in the indian team anyway.

Amla should have been dropped before the tournament.

Mashrafe is the captain and makes the team on bowling merit anyway.

Classic Bits and Pieces Cricketer who was always scared to face quality fast bowling. The only saving grace for Malik were his performances against India and his performances when given an opportunity up the order. He was never a 5 or 6 and using him in those positions always demonstrated a lack of understanding by coaches captains and selectors..

Brother Markhor, thanks for the shout out.

I seem to have a knack for calling out players before everyone jumps on the bandwagon. :najam (no self-boasting intended! :P)

Agreed, hell any decent player was hard done by.

Dhoni was the man of the series in 2011 bilateral odi series in england which is something malik hasnt done in england

It's not 2011. It's 2019. Atleast Malik gets out on first ball, dhoni wastes 60 balls and make us lose.

SRT is best ever batsmen to have played game, should we keep playing for life? Dhoni is no doubt best ever and he's probably the GOAT finisher. But it's 2019 dhoni we are taking about and he's as bad as Malik.

His wicket keeping is still good I agree but it's 2019 and not 80s a keeper need to be a top notch batsman which dhoni isn't anymore.

It's a travesty that even after 11 years in international cricket and 4-5 years as Captain Kohli still needs to hold dhonis fingers. We invested in the wrong captain.

Malik should've been never returned after the CT 2017 tournament, let alone make the 2019 WC squad. Pathetic stuff. Even someone like Umar Akmal would've been a better option at this point.

It's much harder to drop someone like Dhoni than Malik. Dhoni is a legend for India and off the pitch he is a big help.

Malik is a average player and has also used his connections to his own success. When he was called up in 2015, he had been out of the team for a while. So it was not a hard decision to stay away from home if you were to think about the future. Sadly our selectors just panicked after the loss to Bangladesh.

See iam tellling about accomplishments dhoni achieved,i didnt talked about current form of dhoni, dhoni should have been kicked out after 2015 world cup.
As far as captain is concerned then who is captaining test matches without dhoni for 4 years.
He was the first asian captain to win test series in australia

Glorified minnow basher and Asian track bully, shocking to see he was persisted with for 15 years.

I just pointed out that India also selected dhoni and made blunder like Pakistan did with Malik.

There's no comparison between the achievements lol. Dhoni is the most successful Asian player and captain in LOIs. No one comes close to him in LOIs from Asia.

But just because he is a legend doesn't mean he gets a free pass and he has right to lose us a world cup.

If Kohli was a good and strong captain he would have started grooming players for WC few years back.. Maybe it's the business investments on dhoni which is keeping him in team but whatever the reason is it does not justify him in the playing 11 playing the way he is right now ..

We all know this no player is bigger than the team but we all know senior policy works in asian countries, lets hope after world cup this all will going to change.

Yes but shouldn't we as fans call it out? World cup comes once in 4 years and if we lose because of poor team selection it's the biggest robbery from the fans.

If we lose to better teams fair enough but if we lose due to our own faults non cricket relating then it deserves to be called out and criticised

I agree with you thats the problem bcci has,see when australia were on their peak they use to groom players, they even kicked out steve waugh based on the performance, bcci must learn from australia

Wow that was over 4 years ago!! Man I'm good.

Thank you gents

Agreed, hell any decent player was hard done by.

Umar Akmal or Rizwan should have taken his spot. Ideally the latter in for Sarfraz and the former in for Malik are the two changes I would have made to the list of batsmen in this squad.

Some things never change. The only difference this time is that Malik’s luck ran out.

In 2016 we had to make a call of either investing in Malik or Hafeez. Unfortunately the dinosaurs of Pakistan Cricket responsible for selection tried to fit both of them not just in the squad but in the plying 11. These 2 in the lineup are the main reason why we’ve had such an unbalanced team for the last few years.

If there was any merit UA would have never been dropped for likes of Malik and asif

I am sure people who dropped UA had some vested interests selecting Malik. People with vested interests are the biggest evils in Pakistan cricket - or even in the society in general.

I would have had Umar Akmal in place of Asif Ali, Rizwan in place of Malik, Shinwari for Hasnain.
