An activist selected by Labour as a candidate for the next general election called Israel an “apartheid” state and encouraged people to boycott its goods, The Telegraph can reveal.

Faiza Shaheen echoed language used by Kim Johnson, the Labour MP forced to apologise for remarks in Parliament earlier this month.

Ms Shaheen has been chosen by Sir Keir Starmer’s party to take on Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Conservative leader, in Chingford and Woodford Green.

Earlier this week, Sir Keir said the job of rooting out anti-Semitism in Labour was “not complete” as it received the all-clear from the equalities watchdog. It was found in 2020 to have committed “unlawful acts” in its handling of anti-Jewish hatred.

Ms Shaheen told the Huffington Post website in 2018: “I think it is a very important debate to have – what anti-Semitism is – because we need to know what we are fighting.

“If you can’t say that Israel is an apartheid state, or if Palestinians in this country can’t say that it was racist, without being labelled anti-Semitic by the Labour Party, then I think there is a problem.”

She defended Labour’s initial refusal to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism in full, insisting: “Jewish people don’t all feel the same way.”

Ms Johnson, one of Labour’s most Left-wing MPs, was summoned by its chief whips on Feb 1 after she said Israel had a “fascist” government and was “[being referred] to as an apartheid state”.

In 2016, Ms Shaheen wrote on Twitter: “Boycotting of Israeli goods to become a criminal offence… Undemocratic and such activism [is] crucial during apartheid.”

The boycott, sanctions and divestment movement (BDS) is a campaign that looks to isolate Israel professionally, academically and culturally over its ongoing conflict with Palestine. BDS is therefore claimed to be anti-Semitic by a number of Jewish community groups.

A practising Muslim, Ms Shaheen has spoken publicly about her personal experiences of Islamophobia. In 2020, she accused Sir Keir of a “very upsetting” view of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations after the party leader described the protests as a “moment”.

She thanked the topplers of the Edward Colston statue at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, going on to demand reparations for slavery.

The next election, widely expected to take place next year, will not be Ms Shaheen’s first time standing for election in Chingford and Woodford Green.

She received 45.9 per cent of the vote in 2019 – just 2.6 per cent less than Sir Iain’s vote share – and is projected to win the seat on the strength of current national polling.

When Labour fell to a landslide defeat at that poll, Ms Shaheen said the result was “more about the demonisation of Jeremy Corbyn” than the party’s manifesto.

Labour pointed to Ms Johnson being told to apologise over her remarks in the Commons and highlighted Sir Keir’s insistence in 2021 that the party “does not and will not support BDS”.

Nickie Aiken, deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, said: “For all of Keir Starmer’s assurances, this selection shows that Corbyn’s militant Left continue to infect the Labour Party at every level.

“Sir Keir backed Corbyn to be PM at two general elections yet he is perfectly content for his disciples to continue to represent his party in Parliament.”

Lord Austin, a former Labour MP who quit the party over anti-Semitism in 2019, branded Ms Shaheen’s remarks “appalling”.

He told The Telegraph: “These comments are appalling. Corbyn’s terrible leadership left large parts of the party obsessed with and hostile to Israel and every member – let alone candidates for Parliament – must accept the internationally accepted definition of anti-Semitism.

“Surely Keir Starmer and the party’s NEC must act.”

Ms Shaheen was contacted for comment.

Calling Israel an ‘apartheid’ state is a fact and nothing else.

The politics in the UK has become beyond a joke now.

It's crazy that stating an objective and accepted truth is newsworthy, and crazier that the other MP had to apologise for it.

The myth that being anti-Zionism and being anti-Israel is antisemitic has been debunked many a time.

It has been debunked but you even have so called Fellow Muslims brainwashed calling criticising the Zionist entity known as Israel , as dog whistle , racist , antisemitic. The level of brainwashing by Zionists deserves all the Oscars in history.

There are many Jewish groups throughout the world that are anti-Israeli apartheid. Probably the most popular Jewish politician in the West today is also one of the biggest defenders of Palestine in mainstream Western politics. How antisemitic they are, what self hatred they have!

Yes and many even in Israel but they have been silenced , never shown on mainstream tv or somehow attacked as traitors etc.

What I find more interesting is so called Fellow Muslims who claim they pray daily etc but criticise anyone who speaks the truth of Israel. Almost all are living in western nations. What is this mindset?

She was speaking facts. Israel is an apartheid state and what was said certainly isn't anti-Semitic.

Instead of being forced to apologise, the UK has should take responsibility for the Balfour Declaration that allowed Palestinians to lose everything they had.

Are these people frequent in number, or do you seek to indirectly reference certain posters? Which, of course, you are free to do :)

From my experience, Muslims here in the UK are well-versed and aware of the Israeli apartheid, however it has not yet become an acceptable position in mainstream politics, as can be seen above.

Israeli envoy expelled from African Union summit

ADDIS ABABA: As African leaders gathered on Saturday in the Ethiopian capital for the two-day African Union (AU) summit, aiming to jumpstart a faltering trade deal and focusing on challenges of armed conflict and food crisis, an Israeli diplomat was expelled out of the AU assembly.

An AU official told AFP that the diplomat who was “asked to leave” had not been invited to attend the meeting, with a non-transferable invitation only issued to Israel’s ambassador to the African Union, Aleli Admasu.

“It is regrettable that the individual in question would abuse such a courtesy,” the official said.

While condemning the “severe” expulsion of a senior diplomat from the AU summit, Israel accused arch-foe Iran of orchestrating the move with help from Algeria and South Africa.

A video circulating on social media shows guards escorting the Israeli foreign ministry’s deputy director general for Africa, Sharon Bar-li, out of the AU assembly taking place in Addis Ababa.

A spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry described the incident as “severe”, noting Bar-li was “an accredited observer with an entry tag”, a claim denied by an AU official. The ministry spokesman said it was “saddening to see the African Union taken hostage by a small number of extremist states like Algeria and South Africa, which are driven by hatred and controlled by Iran”.

Diane Abbott has had the Labour whip suspended after comments she made suggesting Jewish, Irish and Traveller people are not subject to racism “all their lives”.

Ms Abbott, who served as Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow home secretary, wrote in a letter in The Observer that although white people “with points of difference” suffer prejudice, they have not suffered the same racism as black people.

Following a backlash, including from a Tory Cabinet minister, she apologised for any “anguish” caused, suggesting “errors arose” in her initial draft letter to the newspaper.

However, Labour confirmed that the whip has been suspended from her pending an investigation into the letter.

A party spokesman said: “The Labour Party completely condemns these comments, which are deeply offensive and wrong.

“The chief whip has suspended the Labour whip from Diane Abbott pending an investigation.”

Ms Abbott said on Twitter: “I am writing regarding my letter that was recently published in The Observer.

“I wish to wholly and unreservedly withdraw my written remarks and disassociate myself from them.

“The errors arose in an initial draft being sent. But there is no excuse and I wish to apologise for any anguish caused.

Most Jewish people pass as white. Dianne Abbot was right in what she said but she expressed herself very clumsily, especially given the current climate within the labour party.

Jews aside Abbot could have done better and targeted the correct group of white folk at the minimum, going after those who have suffered various persecutions throughout time was foolish on her part, then again she has always been a bit of an idiot, it’s a shame that those of her ilk have made a career in politics

Most Palestinians also pass as white. If Greek and Italians are considered as white, then Palestinians, Syrians and Jordanians are also white. You cannot tell them apart.

I dont think many Jewish people in the UK are semites.

If you wete to show someone from India a picture of David Baddiel, Luciana Berger or Miriam Margoyles they would probably say they looked like Brits.

I dont think they would say the same for Palestinians or Syrians.

Yeah completely agree. There is nothing to gain from trying to establish a hierarchy of who suffers racism.
