Tim paine is poor batsman, average keeper, average captain .Enough of mediocrity and time to unleash the beast :yasir

Yeah not happening.. which bowler has ever captained them?
Should just give it to Smith..

The problem with Cummins as he is a fast bowler and fast bowler can get injured anytime so it will be risk to give him,I already mentioned that Lyon should be the captain as he is the most senior player but wrongun said that most of the SENA teams do not consider senior player as their captain they always prefer a young player to captain a side.

Marnus in that logic

cummins is only realistic option because he is named vice captain .Personally quite surprised aus opted for him .I guess their are no quality upcoming batsmen in test side apart from labu

Give it to Smith.

Ppers at one time wanted to give it to Amir after his comeback LOL.

Smith is a cheat and if Australia don’t want go back to him, I would go with Lyon and I have explained my pick a year back as well.

While Lyon might not have any captaincy experience at any level, he ticks more boxes than anyone in the current team barring the cheat.

He has been a fixture since 2011, knows Australian cricket and dressing culture inside out, has about 4-5 years left in him and is guaranteed to play every match unless he’s injured which rarely happens. He is also a very cunning bowler and tactically very astute.

Everyone else is either inexperienced or unsure of his place in the team. The fast bowling quartet cannot be considered because they can get injured any time and are often rotated.

Lyon is the perfect candidate for now before Labuschagne games more experience as a Test cricketer.

Lyon captaining until 2023-2024 with Labuschagne taking over at that point sounds ideal to me.

Marnus in that logic

Marnus needs at least 1 year to prove his batting performance,I guess after Ashes he will get the captaincy role but I don't think he should be the leader as he never showed the character,he always comes as a nerd like Smith.

Nerd? lol what if anything thats a good thing.
Also Smith was a good captain just dishonest and still doing petty things..

When Smith came back initially he was essentially acting as 2nd captain. Like in Ashes he was legit setting fields from slips sometimes as Paine kept. It didn’t look good at all for Paine because essentially Smith was doing a good job and it seemed Paine was captain in all but name.

But then Allan Border made a hue and cry about him undermining Smith and he has had to stop since then... like it’s almost uncanny now. Smith literally is giving zero inputs to Paine while standing right next to him.

Tim Paine is an excellent wicketkeeper.
Also his performance in the first match was great. Even in this match he scored 39*
No need to remove him.
He will atleast stay till the ashes.

Yeah, Lyon seems the right choice if they decide Paine has to go. He's a wily guy as can be seen in his bowling plans, on-field tactical chats and even off-field attempts to disrupt the opposition. But most importantly, he seems a popular player and should have no problem rallying the guys together.

His captaincy has been an issue for a while. Even in ashes he was needing to be hand-held by Smith

Lost Sri Lanka series 3-0 (2016)
Lost home series against SA 2-1 (2016)
Lost Test match to Bangla, series draw 1-1 (2017 Bangla historic maiden win over Australia)

Never own a series in Asia:
Played 9 Tests
Own 2

His one and only notable achievement out side Aus was winning NZ series 2-0 (2016).

Total outside wins -5
Total win% = 18/34 = 52.9%

Marnus may not have a lot of experience but he's the best young test bat out there and he's already Australia's 2nd most reliable batsman. I know Aussie cricketers only become Test captains at 30 or so but that has got to change. They can give Labu the captaincy later this year 'cause I don't see temporary captain lasting much longer.

It might not be in their hands if Paine keeps dropping catches, as he doesn't come across as the sort that'll cling on desperately to the post.

Steve Smith remains the most likely man to lead Australia out for the Ashes next winter.

What Smith did was a disgrace. But I said at the time he should not have been sacked as captain. Ball tampering happes, it's just Australia got caught.

Tim Paine has done a steady job. But let's be honest when you have an elite player like Smith in the team and no other obvious standouts for the role, he should be captain instead of Paine.

Yeah, Tim Paine's time is up. Poor captain, so and so keeper and doesn't offer much with the bat.

He's basically in the team as a specialist captain and he's not even good at that.
