Should the India versus England 3rd Test pitch be rated poor or unfit? Rated Average

Pink ball test is not an issue. In the final session of the match, the pitch got better for batting due to dew factor. If England batted well in second session, they had a chance to win the game. Things would have been easier for them in third session and it would have also forced India to bat on Day 3.

Pink ball is completely feasible in India but they need some more time to understand its overall behaviour over different periods of the game.

On unplayable pitches, you don't have a 99/2 and 49/0 kind of score. Not a good pitch for sure, but not really an unplayable pitch. Both sides were guilty of not using their feet in the first inning. In the second inning, Indians used their feet and we saw the difference.

I think most frustration for fans may come from its being a pink ball test and then pitch being a big turner. Eng picking only 1 spinner made it worse.

Not a good pitch, but Eng has been batting poorly on turning tracks and team selection has been weird. Eng could have actually won this test if they had picked 2 spinners and batted well.
 
People are calling out Joe Root for his 5-8 but the damage has been done by Jack Leach before. Joe root picked some very soft wickets and three tailenders who were swinging their bat.

Joe root wouldn't have it done anything special against Indian top order. Its a rare occurrence when entire Indian top order flopped all at once which can happen from time to time.

They really had a golden chance I thought.

If only they had played out 1 session, India would have been under a LOT of trouble.
 
If you are truly being objective - you cannot have missed how the pitch deteriorated so quickly within 2 days.

Such a bad advertisement for the very first test match in the world's largest cricket stadium.

I really hope there's some folks in BCCI who can see through this Pyrrhic victory and ensure that going forward pitches are of a much better standard. Players, money paying spectators deserve this.

Other team have been doing it to for too long as well but this extreme use of home advantage by Dhoni and Kholi has pushed it too far for me and some sort of standardization has to be brought into the game.

Not saying this is a good pitch.

It wasn't.

But this ain't your ultimate, no way anyone can bat pitch.

Root got 3 walking wickets who were trying to slog. Leach actually did the damage.

Fair enough but when part-timers are turning the ball alarmingly, naturally the batsmen's minds become scrambled and are getting beat by straight balls. It's shoddy technique true, but no surface should produce 30 wickets by mid Day 2 and turn the game into a lottery where the outcome of a Test is decided not by the skill of the players but the vagaries of conditions.

Someone mentioned ICC using data to set a baseline as to how far a pitch deviates from "normal" home conditions which seems the way forward. That'll stop the controversies about pitch doctoring which is often based on subjectivity.
 
In Pink ball matches there is one session always good for batting. One session is absolutely dreadful for batting. It all comes down to where you are caught at.

Actually their top order was just trying to hit out, wickets of Sibley and another one I don't recall was not acceptable. They should have batted sensibly, tried to dig in and not lose more than 4 wickets till tea. If they had batted the final session, they had a good chance with 140-150 run lead and India batting tomorrow in first session on Day 3 pitch.
 
If a 5-day game is concluded in less than 2 days then there's certainly something wrong with the pitch. It doesn't matter how much Indian commentators try to defend the pitch.

I agree we need standardized tests.

I agree the minds can scrambled.

But look at the game.

In this match England were 72-2.

They crumbled.

There was nothing that scared them out of the blue.

Root played a very poor shot against Ashwin and got out and from there on, it was a procession.

Same happened with India after Rahane got out.

Heck, Ashwin the bat looked super comfortable out there.

Then England came on to bat and the first over.....I have no words to say.

Neither front nor back.

Neither to the pitch of the ball nor playing it late.

Neither playing for extravagent spin nor playing it inside the line.

Sunny was so furious.

They lost the game then and there.

This, lol. As per them Jimmy & Broad were going to blow us away in the DN test and it was their best chance to win a test in India.

Yeah and Ashwin was iffy today for 7-8 overs.

They could have really made India pay if they were disciplined against Axar.
 
It’s a doctored pitch by the cheating Indians, but this time it nearly backfired on them, as for the test championship it’s a carve up between the top 4 as they monopolise 4 or 5 game test series between each other!

If the pink ball is at fault , I'm not sure the pitch can be blamed. ICC are the ones allowing thevSG pink to be used after all.
 
This was not by any means a 5 day Test match pitch and I was not a fan of it. But neither was it a 2 day one. The end of this match was accelerated by some skilful bowling but most of all horrible batting. India's batting on Day 1 and in the 4th innings showed what was possible in these tough conditions.
 
Let India and England deal it. ECB should be the one to lodge complaint if they think the pitch was poor or good.

This was my observation as well. Ball was hurrying after pitching. Ball usually loses some pace after pitching with a typical red cherry to an extent that you can play off the backfoot.But batsmen hardly had any time to make adjustment here.
 
These pitches look really bad on India - given an epic test series in Australia on sporting pitches
 
To call the pitch unfit or dangerous is just masking the inability of the batsmen, on both sides, to play spin. Doesn't matter how quickly the ball is turning and to what degree. If it turning, you should have the skills to handle that. The pitch was consistent in turn and provided an even bounce. In this era of fast paced cricket, sadly playing spin is an art very few have.

Not sure how many of the young posters here know that back in the day when Field hockey reigned supreme and was played on grass, both India & Pakistan were kings because of their ability to control the ball on an uneven surface. The Legendary Dhyan Chand, Hasan Sardar and others were notable for their skills to control the ball. The West didn't appreciate and introduced Astroturf which essentially reduced the game of skill to flat out power play and we all know the outcome.

This would explain a lot.

Maybe pitches need to account for ball skidding and be prepared accordingly.

Turn and heavy skid can be a tough combo.

Pink ball tests are a work in progress.
 
Pink ball test match is not ideal for Indian pitches. BCCI needs to stop experimenting during important series. They can do experiment against lesser opponents or in domestics.

Here bounce was consistent.

It clearly did not play fine and it cant if there is explosions like someone has thrown hand grenades on the pitch every time the ball pitches.

Ideal pitch for pink ball is grassy one, however looking at opponents bowling strength, and WTC qualification hanging in the balance, curators prepared this pitch. I feel India is not suited for Pink ball test match. Heck I’m not even in favour of pink ball test, as it’s like a lottery. India lost the test match in one bad session. This whole experiment of bringing in new audience to test matches will backfire big time, if pink ball continues to produce such results. After today, I have lost all the interest in pink ball test.

I thought Pakistan pitches were poor but after watching a few overs of England's second innings I would rate this pitch as one of the worst pitches for five day test match.India has gone back to the old days when the used to Doctor pitches because they had no fast bowlers.India has a pretty good fast bowling attack so why prepare rank turners?

this wouldn't have happened if WTC final berth was not at stake....this is just a one off instance as India is desperate to get to the finals
 
It was poor but I have to say just because its DN Pink ball test doesn’t mean India should not prepare turners? In highlights skidding made a difference and I guess players didn’t expect it.

Lets see how its next match on the same ground.
 
I love these pitches.
Gets all the other nations riled up, it's sweeter this time because they can't even say that we can win only on doctored pitches bcoz we just destroyed aus in aus with a team of newbies.

Seems the SG pink ball is too good for the batsman.

The problem was Root running through us. Some people got needlessly excited and were hammering away posts at the rate of 3/min - now the same want points docked :rabada2

Thats the point. Australian series win by india is Remembered for long long time .now this year win a series in South Africa & England.this team can win if they play with right combination
 
Poor pitch but I'm flabbergasted at the ineptness of this English line up. They could have scored 120 in the 3rd innings and made a contest but such bad batting I haven't seen for a while! England should not bother to tour India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Such poor players of spin!
 
Choosing first batting in d/n pink ball test is pathetic decision.
Root is winning tosses but completely failed to take an advantage.
 
Awful pitch. Akin to an ODI finishing within 20 overs for each side.

But England's batters played like school boys. Indian batters apart from Rohit weren't that good either.

Test matches should atleast go on for 4 days. Any test ending in less than 3 days is generally not good.

Batting was poor from both sides. There were no dangerously bouncing deliveries or square turning ones.
 
I had absolutely no problem with the pitch for the second test but this pitch was a disaster , can’t have a test match finishing within 2 days!!

Yes have some home adavantsge but this is a joke

Pakistan have never produced a wicket as pathetic as this at home or in the UAE. Just shows how deseperate india are when they go to these extremes to produced a pitch surface like they have.

No it did not and certainly it did not explode like these two have done. In any case SL is going India's way too obviously they need the home advantage more than India but in any case these sort of pitches can not be defended regardless of who wins.

They certainly did. It skidded on a bit more here. Axar and Ash are superior to SL spinners. That's all there is to it
 
Pitch isnt the problem.

Problem is:

1. India is close to the WTC final.

2. England is out of the WTC final.
 
The match was short, underwhelming and erratic. Much like the man the stadium was named after.

Poor pitch no doubt about it.

All its that whoever is encouraging these kind of pitches has no place in test match cricket and should be fired with immediate effect. This is test match cricket at the highest level and you cant be playing on so unprepared wickets common make an effort to prepare a wicket that has all kind of bowling in the game at the very least.
 
There are only two reasons for a test match ending inside 2 days.

Either the losing team is a hopeless minnow. Or the pitch is atrocious. And I wouldn't call England a hopeless minnow.

I think India got desperate and decided to resort to dirty tactics after losing the first test.

You'd think all their other advantages would be enough but clearly not. One doctored pitch in the previous test was bad enough but the curators didn't even bother being subtle about it this time around.

All the game of cricket can hope for is that enough attention is brought to this shameful behaviour. Maybe India will show a bit of humility before the 4th test and won't doctor their pitches to these ridiculous levels.

Pitch was poor but I just saw the highlights and I doubt Ishant, Bumrah, etc. are the best players of spin in the world.
 
I didn't enjoy the match at all, honestly it became boring.

Only thing I'm happy about is that the inflated averages of a lot of batsmen are coming down in this series.

Poor pitch, poor batting, and pink ball skidding a lot more made it worse.

Overall, not a good watch, one of those rare occasions when I enjoyed following Aus-Nzl T20 (a format I don't like) more than a test match involving 2 top teams.
 
Several former players, including India's Harbhajan Singh and VVS Laxman, on Thursday said that the turning Motera pitch, on which India defeated England by 10 wickets inside two days, was not ideal for Tests, an opinion that was not shared by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar said the overtly defensive mindset of the batsmen was responsible for their dismissals as most of them got out to straighter deliveries.

India demolished England by 10 wickets to go 2-1 up in the four-match series with the spinners taking all but one of the 20 opposition wickets. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel had a match-haul of 11 for 70 while senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took seven wickets to reach milestone 400 wickets.

"It was not an ideal pitch for a Test match and even India collapsed (to 145 in their first innings," former India batting stalwart Laxman said. Harbhajan, one of the four members of the Indian 400 Test wicket club, also felt the same. "It is not an ideal pitch. India would also have been in trouble if England had scored 200 in their first innings. But it (the pitch) is the same for both sides," said the 40-year-old off-spinner.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan mocked the surface in a tweet. "If we are going to see these pitches ... I have an answer to how it could work ... Give the Teams 3 innings !!! #INDvENG," he wrote.

Yuvraj was alo very critical of it though he lauded the Indian bowlers for their excellent performance. "Finished in 2 days Not sure if that's good for test cricket !If @anilkumble1074 and @harbhajan_singh bowled on these kind of wickets they would be sitting on a thousand and 800?" he tweeted.

"It's more about the intent and application of the batsmen. It is a pitch where Rohit and Crawley hit half centuries. England were thinking of how to survive and not how to score runs. "You have to credit Axar Patel for the way he has used the odd ball that straightens. Ashwin and Axar were superb."

Former England spinner Graeme Swann slammed the visitors for playing just one spinner in a Test match in India where pitches are generally spin-friendly. "You cannot come to India and play just one spinner in a Test match and get way on this wicket," he said.
Joining the criticism of the track was Kevin Pietersen.

"To have a pitch like this for one match is fine as batsmen's skill is put to test. But I would not like to see a pitch like this again and I think none of the other players want to see it either. Well done Inida," he posted.
 
A test match between two top test sides finishes in under 2 days, definitely raises the question, regardless of who was at advantage. Afghanistan vs South Africa with dale steyn and philander at peak in South Africa would have probably lasted longer.

Yeah...I think the pink ball tests should be tested in non-high profile matches first.

Get it refined and then roll it for important games/series.
 
I generally hate double standards around this in cricket, India doing poor in England means they're FTB's but England doing poor in India means doctored tracks, etc etc that sort of stuff, and the general attitude towards players who do well in Asia vs non Asia despite both presenting different challenges equally worth praise (which bizarrely seems particularly prevalent among Asian fans!)

But this pitch was rubbish, anyone saying otherwise is deluded or paid off.
 
That being said I really truly despise Michael Vaughan so if it annoys him then I actually think the BCCI haven't gone far enough and should be aiming for India to bat the morning session, bowled out just after lunch then wrap up the innings win before Tea following Pant's maiden ten fer

Considering you're calling current Indian batsmen best players of spin bowling shows how much you actually know about Indian cricket. We're pathetic players of spin as the innocuous spinners like Moeen, Elgar, Keefe etc will attest to.
 
No doubt the pitch is not of enough quality. But how come so many batsmen just got out on straight balls?
