If you're not in the picture for 2019, you shouldn't be on the trip. Sohail will be what, 35/36 by then?

Agreed. Better to give valuable game time to someone who will be at their peak by the 2019 WC and will still be in the running for the 2023 WC, which is Pakistan's best chance at winning a WC since 2011.

I've been saying this since 2015 where its time to invest in young upcoming players rather than look at Wahab, Sohail, Tanvir and Irfan. 2019 WC is not that far away.

This argument only works if there are good young prospects who we can bank on. So if Junaid and Usman were available, I would agree with you, given that we also have our attack leaders in Amir and Hassan. Without Junaid and Usman, i think for this series at least, Sohail should have been considered.

Age is just an excuse, if age is the main factor than i wonder what hafeez and malik are doing in the team since they are older than sohail.

If Wahab is picked instead of Sohail I'll be furious. If we select with an eye to the future,I can live with Sohails non selection.

does that mean Azhar and Hafeez are in the picture for 2019?

thats awfully depressing if they are

This is right on the money. If anyone over the age of 30 should be picked, it's Sohail. If we end up selecting Wahab or Irfan, it's just hypocrisy.

He is past his prime way ago. He can take inumerous wickets in domestic season but he is not good enough or may be fit enough for International cricket

Junaid will return and we also have Rumman. Winning this series is not a bigger priority than winning the next WC. Therefore, trying out a domestic pacer who can become a match-winner over the next two years is crucial.

Irfan is better than Sohail in LOIs and Riaz is better than Sohail in tests.

Irfan being better than Sohail in ODIs is aruguable, but Sohail is much better in tests compared to Wahab, look what he achieved in the short time he got to play.

If you go by domestic t20 performance and T10 tournament wahab should have been the first name he was comfortably the best bowler in both the tournament.Wahab was hard done by selectors he should have been selected for t20is where he can be useful in middle overs.

Azhar at least age wise isn't a liability, just quality, Hafeez isn't good enough in either category, I just don't get the management persevering with him like he's the only player of his mould.

Azhar is a liability in age, batting, fielding, everything...

Mixed feelings. He is old and wasn't anything special in World XI series but at the same time he has been working his socks off in domestic trophy. He hasn't just been good, his stats have been exceptional. I just pray and hope the alternative replacements for Junaid Khan and UKS are good bowlers and not rubbish players.

I like Sohail, he's an honest trier but his peak was wasted thanks to Waqar who showed favouritism to Rahat and Wahab.

I would've picked him given injuries to Junaid and Shinwari and his suitability for NZ conditions, but I understand if we wish to select younger alternatives woth an eye for the 2019 WC.

There is no point of investing in Sohail Khan or Asif or KA or Butt, because they are at retirement age. I don't care how good they are, You cannot start your career at 36 years of age, if you argue on that fact, probably you should not be commenting on Cricketing matters. I don't get why fans and certain lobby in media are keep whining about them.

Irfan is better than Sohail in LOIs and Riaz is better than Sohail in tests.

The discussion is solely on limited overs cricket, in test cricket, Riaz is miles above Sohail since Sohail is not fit for test cricket.

I don't understand the comparison between Irfan and Sohail. To start with, Sohail is a righty and we could clearly use another right arm pacer. He has the ability to hit the ball long quite well which Irfan can't do to save his life. On top of that, Sohail can actually finish his overs which again, Irfan, half the time can't do.

The purpose of bilateral series is to build a team for the WC and Irfan clearly cannot be in them solely based on his age, 35, whereas Sohail is 33. I understand that Sohail is not the ideal candidate due to his age, but if the choice is between Irfan, Sohail and Wahab for ODIs, Sohail is clearly the choice for me.
