What's new

Sohail Tanvir - An honest trier and a T20 specialist

Bit of an unsung hero but no idea why he doesnt do that well for Pakistan?

He has done fine when given a chance in t20s. But he is too old now and generally one format bowlers dont have a long career speaking in terms of number of matches they play. Management wants younger and multiple format bowlers.

Spot on. He also used to be decent a while back in ODI's I think but now his time is gone, that's all. Hopefully he can have a few good performances in various T20 tournaments around the world and finish on a high.

His clever with his variations and can swing the new ball. Also an okay slogger. But his never really performed the same way for Pakistan.

He isn’t a likeable cricketer due to his off field issues. It’s hard to look past those.

Sohail Tanvir is someone who's always on high demand across the T20 tournaments. I believe he can still keep on knocking on T20I door of Pakistan with consistent performances.

he is at his level

for Pakistan his career in totality has been shocking

barely takes a wicket a game, can't field, cant bat

But then some who are doing well in international cricket are struggling so what does that say about them?

Should certainly be apart of the T20 side...I can't even remember why he was dropped

Fatigue , perhaps they don’t care?

Regardless we have over a decade of Tanvir’s international performances to look out, and its is largely failure

Bit more than just an honest trier in the various t20 leagues he has turned out for. Didn't he also have a spectacular IPL many years ago?

As an international, he burst onto the scene and did very well but obviously got overtaken by better bowlers and now it is too late for nay sort of a comeback with the talent Pakistan have.

the all rounder tag did him harm, batting and fielding wasn't up to international standards. no one can really complain abt his bowling tho, 27 ave, 7 e/r is decent.

has pbly made more money than any other pak crickter doing the t20 circuit, has been a fairly regular top buy in cpl. im pretty sure hes happy enough, has done well for himself.

also as far as off field issues go, pindi walon kai saath tau yeh cheezein chalti hi rahti hain :akhtar

p.s. its jokes, im pindiwaal too :P

Great bowlers in Tests generally tend to at least be decent in ODIs.

Fair play to him but he would have only made my team if he was a reliable number 8 (which he isnt).

His slow dibbly dobbly cutters and ocassional quicker one at 127 kph will get found out on tracks outside the UAE.

Another chance tonight to do something big for Quetta...

Not sure what has happened to Sohail Tanvir - was the darling of the T20 circuit but his performances in CPL have been pretty bad.

The guy is now in his late 30's and he has a damanding action which isn't easily repeatable. He was always a crap batsman

He can bat - one thing we can say for Sohail Tanvir (25) - done a good job for Multan in the batting atleast and given them a fighting chance.

Do Multan Sultans need Tanvir?

gone for lots of runs and could well have given the game back to LQ

Born: December 12, 1984 (age 36 years), Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Happy Birthday Sohail Tanvir!

Doing his thing Sohail and getting advice from Rizwan during final overs of IU v MS

The T20 specialist could be costing his team in the vital 2nd last over of the game

Concedes 19 off the over, and well and truly costs Multan the game in an over. 6 4 4 4 and the game's gone

Tanveer has past his expiry date , its time to get rid of him. His batting is hugely overrated.

We have this terrible habit of smearing a player after a bad showing, it's pretty ridiculous. In this batsman's game, you're going to go for runs sometimes (and that sentiment rings more true in T20s). He has been a great T20 player for Pak over the years, and he will certainly still find some success in leagues for now. I will concede that he shouldn't represent Pak internationally again, but he has done his part.

Hope he is retired or discarded for ever soon. He is just playing on his reputation which he carried in the past.

I'm so tired of seeing him playing.

The last over was too funny. Could be on cricket sledges and memes that one

His action is akin to an octopus flapping about out of water.

Finally a poster with some sense.

Tanvirs action makes it hard for him to be accurate and consistent. He might have the odd good game here or there. Today was a bad day at the office

You know the value of Pak bowlers in t20s when Tanvir’s best figures in IPL stood for about 7-8 years :afridi

I don’t remember off the top of my head. Was it like 7 wickets for 20 runs?

Edit: it was 6-14 and stood for 11 YEARS

Anyone badmouthing Tanvir has no idea what they’re talking about. He bowled absolutely magnificently yesterday until that last over. I enjoyed watching his bowling spells.

The truth is, the game was done and dusted by that point. No such thing that “Tanvir cost his team the game”. The game was already gone.

And by the way that the only second worst over in terms of runs conceded in Tanvir’s 15 years long career. Have we begun smearing players on not only their worst performances (which would disqualify many an ATG) but on individual overs? What has the world come to?

Not sure which Tanvir you’re watching but Tanvir has consistently topped the charts as fast bowler. Was instrumental in Multan’s number 1 finish and group stage dominance. He was the 7th most economical bowler and third most economical pacer. His average of 16.42 was the best of any regular bowler period in the entire competition and far better than the next two, Hasnain at 19 and Shaheen at 19.5.

Tanvir is one of the few bowlers that continues to be consistently economical in T20s. May have the odd bad game here or there, and yes it was indeed a bad day at the office yesterday.

We Pakistani show little respect to our top bowlers. I remember last year, there was so much hype for Hasnain, Shaheen, Dilbar etc because they’re youngsters and absolutely no one talking about Tanvir — that’s quite depressing.

Tanvir looks in the mood to cost his team again this game.

He's getting battered. He's bowling loose and paying the price. He just needed to bowl in the block hole.

Bowled a match-losing over to Lewis Gregory in the last game, and he might have done it here to Rutherford - 19 off the over.

Tanvir not having a good time of it in PSL6

Tannu showing why he isn't selected for internationals anymore. He could be a source of renewable energy with that bowling action, but too much going wrong for him to be consistent as a bowler.

The T20 specialist has shown up when Multan needed him most!

Gets Munro for a golden duck, and now Shadab for a duck. Tanvir is putting Multan on the path to the PSL final.

Bags Munro and Shadab, both for ducks, in his opening spell, then comes back for his final over and bags the dangerman Khawaja. 3/17 from his 4 overs.

Happy Birthday to Sohail Tanvir - 37 years today

Officially 37 year old, I;m sure actually he is close to 40 and always had poor fitness level, particularly for a fast bowler, still able to get a PSL contract, hope someday the standard will improve and we will not see "fast bowlers" like him and Rumman in PSL.

His IPL contract allowed him to become a t20 specialist. Although there was never anything special about this guy. Just another yasir arafat that plays t20 worldwide but cant perform for Pakistan.

He offers variations plus alot of our bowlers could provide same services in leagues worldwide

But im cricket i realized its all about reputation. Once your reputation gets set you will get contracts from every league.

Scouting in cricket doesnt exist

A mediocre player at best.

He is same as Yasir Arafat , dwayen bravo , Micke Yardy , ben hollioke , ian harvey , chris adams etc kind of player

Could he be Quetta's hero tonight? Didnt do much with the bat

Legendary ...

If you succeed only in T20s at highest level, that's not good enough in my opinion.

Gotta be atleast like Shahid Afridi or Hardik Pandya ( great in T20s and good in ODIs).

Hit his 3rd T20 fifty today, scoring 74* off 42 balls striking at 176.19!

Happy Birthday to Sohail Tanvir

The left-arm pacer has featured in 121 international matches taking 130 wickets. In T20 cricket, he has picked up 389 wickets.

Lol, the guy was 39 years old and was never going to play for Pakistan again. Pointless excercise.

What was the point of this announcement.

Farewell to the 'Pankhaa' of Pakistan Cricket

It was 2008 when I first read this guys name in the english newspaper. Back than to get cricket news, one would had to go through the sports section of the papers. I came across this guys name when Shoaib Akhtar, as usual, was pulled out of the squad due to his indiscipline behavior. I was fascinated by Sohail Tanvir as at that time we didnt have that many cricketers coming from Rawalpindi. After Akhtar, this guy was the only other guy from Rawalpindi that was selected to play for Pakistan.

Interestingly, I had no idea my bowling action was just like his. Because as a kid I had learned how to rotate your arm and not ball watta, but I never used to bend my back for bowling strength. Was always a weaker bowler as i would rely on my arm alone.

When I started watching Tanvir bowl and Misbah bat at the 2007 world t20, i became their fans. I was super excited when Tanvir would get selected in the IPL by Rajistan Royals. Those 6 wickets he took against Chenai was just remarkable. That record stayed for many years. I remember the guy getting the purple cap, an honor for Pakistan cricket that our bowler ended up dominating the IPL. His bowling figure was a record itself that stayed up there for many years.

However, once the guy got injured things changed. He was always poor on fitness and was never gonna have an international career without any proper fitness. He was offered to make a come back 2013 onwards when Pakistan was failing to scout bowlers, but Tanvir had very little control on the movement and variation of his deliveries.

Sohail Tanvir did had a habit of troubling Sri Lankan players as they would fail to read his bowling action and throw their wickets to him. Ironic, considering that every weird bowling action has been invented in Sri Lanka.

Farewell Sohail Tanvir. While not every player that play's for Pakistan ends up becoming a legend, yet, if you play with dignity and respect, that's is enough to build your reputation. He had a good career and was able to join the t20 circuit at the right time.

There were a few iconic moments in his early start. His two sixes when he was batting with Misbah. His tall lanky spin bowling against India in the Test series. His purple cap and his bowling innings against Chennai Super Kings.

Farewell Sohail Tanvir!

Sohail Tanvir makes the early breakthrough for Pakistan Champions against West Indies Champions in the ongoing match between the two sides in the World Championship of Legends 2024. His figures so far 3/12 in 3 overs.

Sohail Tanvir was a star in 2007 World T20. I remember Aussies were having a hard time against him.

He is a proper T20 superstar.

Yeah his two sixes against India in 2007 WC gave him real recognition in international cricket.
