Sri Lanka are struggling. This tour could go the same way as when Australia visited Sri Lanka. They got smashed in the Tests but dominated the ODI's and T20I's. Sri Lanka are 73-3 off 15.3 overs.

Wasn't Jayasuriya an opener. Why is he batting at 6?

Another snoozefest by Sri Lanka. Hopefully Afghanistan replaces them soon in ODI ranking. Badly miss Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan and peak Malinga.

The match just got interesting.

SA need 12 more with 4 wickets left. They were coasting along for most of it.

THE Standard Bank Proteas seamers again restricted Sri Lanka to a below par total to enable the visitors to complete the Dambulla double and go 2-0 up in the five-match ODI series on Wednesday.

The winning margin was 4 wickets with 43 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka again won the toss and decided to bat first but were placed under immediate pressure when Lungi Ngidi took two wickets off successive balls in his opening over.

Although they did manage a few half-centuries partnerships thereafter headed by the 67 for the fourth wicket between Angelo Mathews (79 not out off 111 balls, 6 fours) and Niroshan Dickwella (69 off 78 balls, 10 fours), the Proteas always managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals to restrict Sri Lanka to 244/8 from their 50 overs.

All eight wickets fell to the seamers with Ngidi (3/50 in 8 overs) and Andile Phehlukwayo 3/45 in 9 overs) being the most successful.

The two spinners also played their role with JP Duminy and Tabraiz Shamsi conceding only 73 runs from the 17 overs they bowled between them.

Whatever chance Sri Lanka had of getting back into the game disappeared when they gave both Hashim Amla and Man of the Match Quinton de Kock early lives as they set about a first wicket partnership of 91 that included 67 in the opening power play.

De Kock and Faf du Plessis then added 53 for the third and, although they lost more wickets than they would have liked towards the end of their chase, they still got comfortably across the line.

De Kock (87 off 78 balls, 13 fours and a six) was the major contributor. He looked as though a century was his for the taking until he went for a big hit to be caught in the deep. Had he cleared the boundary he would have taken his ODI career total to the 4 000 mark.

The Proteas will nevertheless be pleased to see their opening pair once again putting a big partnership on the board. They have big roles to play as the team builds its way towards next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.

Spinner Akila Dananjaya was the only really threatening Sri Lankan bowler and, although he took 3 wickets in an outstanding effort, he still had to concede more than 50 runs from his 10 overs.

The third ODI will be played on Sunday at Pallekele as a day game.

Both teams at a rebuilding phase in their timeline, but SA have more experience and it showed today.

'We were a bunch of schoolkids' – Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews didn't hide his disappointment after Sri Lanka had "a terrible day" at work in the second one-day international against South Africa, losing by four wickets.

Having put up just 244/8 after opting to bat in Dambulla, Sri Lanka surrendered to Quinton de Kock's belligerent 87 as South Africa chased down the target in just 42.5 overs to go 2-0 up in the series.

"We gave away too many wickets up front [56/3], and then we lost wickets at crucial times too, so we never got going. We didn't hold on to catches as well, and while defending low scores, you need to hold on to every chance. We had a terrible day on the field," Mathews said after the match.

"Neither did the bowlers bowl well. We were a bunch of schoolkids when it came to today's fielding."

De Kock and Hashim Amla (43) were both given reprieves early in the South African innings, and the batsmen cashed in, adding 91 runs for the first wicket to put South Africa in a commanding position. Faf du Plessis (49) and JP Duminy (32) did the needful after that.

Niroshan Dickwella, who scored 69 alongside Mathews' 79* to help Sri Lanka recover from 56/3, agreed with Mathews that Sri Lanka made too many mistakes on the field.

"We made mistakes throughout the game. If we want to win a match, we can't make so many mistakes," Dickwella said.

Dickwella's dismissal in the 26th over at a team total of 123 after he and Mathews had added 67 runs for the fourth wicket initiated a middle-order collapse and Sri Lanka went from 123/3 to 227/8, leaving Mathews with too much to do.

"Maybe you can make two or three mistakes and fix those things within the game itself and win the match. But if you make mistakes through the match, it's hard to win," added Dickwella.

The mood was quite the opposite in the South African camp, as du Plessis and his team made full use of 'more favourable' conditions. "These conditions are favourable a bit more. Batting second was going to be tricky, but pleased to see how we played," du Plessis said.

"It was a good one-day wicket. But I'm very pleased at how we are chasing the game. We are staying positive, putting pressure on the opposition and so on."

De Kock, who was also named the Player of the Match, was relieved to find the efforts off the field, in terms of preparations, working well during match situations. "Nice to know the work you're doing off the field is paying off. The last tour has been really difficult, and it's always challenging to bat in the subcontinent," he said.

"The pitch played the same all day. It was slower as the day progressed, but it was a similar pitch through the game."
