Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) are pleased to announce a historic three-match One-Day International (ODI) series between the Proteas Men and Afghanistan from 18 - 22 September in the United Arab Emirates.

The ODI series is the first-ever bilateral series between the two sides with all three matches set to be hosted by ACB at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

South Africa has faced Afghanistan on two occasions in 50-over cricket during the last two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2019 and 2023.

This series will mark their first encounter since South Africa defeated Afghanistan in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Trinidad and Tobago last month.

CSA Chairman Lawson Naidoo commented: “We are excited to embark on this historic ODI series with Afghanistan, who have become a very competitive all-round team as evidenced by their recent performances in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and most recently at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This is a significant milestone in our cricketing relations, and we look forward to a competitive and entertaining series”

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf added: “These fixtures were not initially part of our FTP. Still, based on our productive negotiations with our counterparts at Cricket South Africa, we concluded that we will host the Proteas for an ODI series in September. They are an excellent team, and we are eagerly looking forward to hosting them and playing them regularly in the future.”

White-ball head coach Rob Walter has today announced the squads for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan and the proceeding white-ball tour against Ireland, which get underway in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this month

Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith and DP World Lions spinner Nqaba Peter, who are both capped in T20 Internationals (T20I), have earned their maiden ODI call-ups.

Dolphins all-rounder Andile Simelane will gain exposure to the national set-up for the first time after being named in both the ODI squad against Afghanistan and T20I side against Ireland. The 21-year-old, identified as a high-potential talent, was part of the SA Emerging tour of Zimbabwe in August and most recently represented South Africa A in the one-day series against Sri Lanka A.

Proteas seamer Lungi Ngidi has recovered from his right calf injury and has been named in all three squads.

The Proteas will face Afghanistan in three ODIs from 18 - 22 September at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, before heading to Abu Dhabi for two T20Is on 27 and 29 September and three ODIs from 02 - 07 October against Ireland. All five matches will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Commenting on the selection of the squads, Walter said: “We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months.

“This has been a deliberate move from management, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

“There is no doubt that tours such as these offers us this unique opportunity to provide players with international exposure in differing conditions compared to what they are used to.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing how some of the more experienced players step up, whilst keeping a close eye on who can grab this opportunity and become more regular within the national set-up.”

ACB Name Squad for the South Africa ODIs

Afghanistan Cricket Board’s National Selection Committee today finalized the Afghanistan National Team’s Squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to be played from September 18 to 22 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in UAE.

Afghanistan will be without the services of the prolific top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran who has been ruled out of the series due to an ankle sprain in his left leg. The AfghanAtalan Lineup will continue to miss the expertise of its frontline spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who is yet to fully recover from a right phalanx sprain.

Talented right-hand top-order batter Abdul Malik, who recently put on some incredible performances in domestic List A competitions, has been called up to cover for the injured Ibrahim Zadran. Darwish Rasooli, who has 7 T20I caps to his name so far and has put on terrific consistent performances in the recently held List A Cup and the SCL9, has been called up to the national for the South Africa Series.

AfghanAtalan lineup will also have the services of its all-time greatest spinner Rashid Khan, who missed the previous ODI series against Ireland. The rest of the squad remains the same that helped Afghanistan win the 3-match ODI series 2-nill against Ireland back in March this year.

ACB CEO Mr. Naseeb Khan: “Hosting South Africa for the first time in our cricketing history is a huge milestone for Afghanistan Cricket. They are a top-quality side, and playing against them in an ODI series is something we are all excited about.”

“Our team has shown great performances in ICC events over the past two-three years, and we are focused on making our team equally competitive in bilateral cricket.” He added

ACB Chief Selector Mr. Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil: "Mujeeb Ur Rahman continues to recover from his injury and is unavailable for selection. Ibrahim Zadran will also miss the South Africa ODIs for twisting his ankle on the edge of the New Zealand Test. However, we have included some of the top-performing youngsters in Abdul Malik and Darwish Rasooli. Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar is also a talented cricketer and has demonstrated excellent skills recently and will cover for Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the series.”

Afghanistan Squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa: Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Rahmat Shah (VC), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ikram Alikhil (WK), Abdul Malik, Riaz Hassan, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Nangyal Kharoti, Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Bilal Sami, Naveed Zadran and Farid Ahmad Malik.

Ireland Men’s squads announced for South Africa series

The sides will play three ODIs and two T20Is

The national selectors have named Ireland Men’s white-ball squads for the multi-format series taking place in Abu Dhabi starting in late September.

This series marks the return to white-ball cricket for the senior men’s team after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies back in June.

The fixtures are as follows:

27 September 2024: Ireland Men v South Africa Men (1st T20I; Abu Dhabi; start 4.30pm)
29 September 2024: Ireland Men v South Africa Men (2nd T20I; Abu Dhabi; start 4.30pm)
2 October 2024: Ireland Men v South Africa Men (1st ODI; Abu Dhabi; start 12.30pm)
4 October 2024: Ireland Men v South Africa Men (2nd ODI; Abu Dhabi; start 12.30pm)
7 October 2024: Ireland Men v South Africa Men (3rd ODI; Abu Dhabi; start 12.30pm)

THE SQUADS

Ireland Men’s ODI squad:

Paul Stirling (captain), Mark Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Gavin Hoey, Fionn Hand, Graham Hume, Matthew Humphreys, Andy McBrine, Neil Rock, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young

Ireland Men’s T20I squad:

Paul Stirling (captain), Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Fionn Hand, Matthew Humphreys, Graham Hume, Neil Rock, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young

National selector, Andrew White on the squads selected:

“2026 and 2027 are pivotal years for our white-ball squads – those years being the next T20 and 50-over World Cups respectively. Given their timeframes, it means we are looking at this upcoming series against South Africa as the start of a new cycle. With that in mind, there are a number of selections and playing combinations that we will look at – albeit a number of uncapped players that were actively being considered – such as Morgan Topping and Liam McCarthy – who are still nursing injuries at present and were not able to be considered.

“One area we will explore on this tour is the top order in our T20 squad. We’ll be looking at introducing a new dynamic, with Andrew Balbirnie sitting out the T20Is on this occasion. There are only two T20Is in the upcoming series, but they will offer important opportunities as we try to increase our levels of performance again. Andrew remains very much central to our thoughts and will open the batting in the ODIs.

‘The Ireland Emerging and Wolves tours over the last 18 months have been invaluable to the players but also in terms of our succession planning. We need to deepen our pool of international cricketers and for the likes of Gavin Hoey, he will come into the international arena with greater confidence following his involvement in such fixtures and this is hugely important. The volume of international fixtures leading into 2027 is exciting and there will be opportunities for players to make their mark.’

39/7. Their spin factory has unleashed another beast. Ghazanfar. They are unable to pick him as they try to read him off the pitch. All hail Rashid khan. He said an year or 2 back "Afghanistan has 500 mystery spinners". He was not kidding was he?

Result Update

Afghanistan beat South Africa for the first time in their history in ODI today by 6 wickets

Afghanistan has beaten several teams in white-ball internationals in the last 11 months, with three of those results coming in ODIs at last year's 50-over World Cup. The last two were at this year's T20 World Cup, where Afghanistan reached the semi-finals. In between, there was a T20I win over Sri Lanka and now, an ODI win over South Africa, in the first meeting the two teams have had outside of World Cups.

Afghanistan's opening bowlers, Fazalhaq Farooqi and AM Ghazanfar, stunned South Africa in the powerplay and reduced them to their worst start in ODIs: 36 for 7 after ten overs. A 39-run eighth-wicket stand between Wiaan Mulder and Bjorn Fortuin ensured South Africa escaped being bowled out for their lowest ODI total - 69. However, they were still shot out for the lowest score by a top-ten ranked team against Afghanistan on a slow and dry surface.

Afghanistan have never failed to chase a score below 130, and they did find run-scoring easy early on. From 38 for 3 in the 14th over, Hashmatullah Shahidi steadied them before a fifth-wicket partnership of 47 between Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib off 48 balls took them to a massive win. Afghanistan polished off the total with 24 overs to spare.

The margin underlines their dominance from the opening exchanges. Farooqi changed his angle from over to around the wicket and played well, but South Africa struggled to read Ghazanfar. Fortuin started the counterattack with two boundaries off Rashid Khan's third over as South Africa limped towards 50. Mulder, who was the most assured player of spin in his side, hit the only six of the innings off Rashid over long-off and brought up South Africa's hundred with a pull over midwicket and his half-century off 80 balls.

Afghanistan vs South Africa, 2nd ODI:

Afghanistan destroying South Africa. Such a dangerous side.
We just need to get better in conditions outside SC. Our bowling is pretty decent in spin department, and are having a good crop of fast bowlers coming through. Though batting still remains a problem.

Afghanistan are looking good for a great score.

They can win again today and make it 2-0.

AFG - 213/2 (38 overs).

As of now Afghanistan and Bangladesh are tied for the 2nd best bowling units behind India.

Pakistan has regressed badly to 3rd position followed by Lankans.

As of now Afghanistan needs to unearth a top quality batsman to go along with batsmen like Gurbaz. As of now, consistency is their big problem. Afg are a team no one wants to face in a major tournament.

I wouldn't put Bangladesh in 2nd yet definitely not in limited overs, but in tests yes they outperformed our fast bowlers in the recently concluded series and more importantly they have potential.

Even with SA's A-listers, they would have lost the series to Afghanistan in Sharjah. Very difficult to beat their spinners. Previously Afghanistan's batting used to let them down but now they have found Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Shahidi and Naib as solid batters. At the moment, Afghanistan would even beat Pakistan/SL/WI by an innings in a Test match in Sharjah.

Afghanistan secured their most significant bilateral series win by defeating South Africa by 177 runs in Sharjah, marking their first victory against a team ranked in the ICC's top five. Afghanistan set a daunting 368-run target, powered by Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s seventh ODI century, Rahmat Shah’s half-century, and Azmatullah Omarzai’s quickfire 86 off 50 balls. Their total of 300+ was their tenth in ODIs.

Rashid Khan, celebrating his 26th birthday, shone with the ball, taking 5-29, his fifth career five-wicket haul, while left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote recorded his best figures of 4-26. South Africa struggled in the chase, collapsing from 73-0 to 112-7 as Rashid and Kharote dismantled their lineup. Despite contributions from Temba Bavuma (44) and Tony de Zorzi (33), South Africa folded for 190, suffering their fifth-largest ODI defeat by runs.

Afghanistan now leads the series 2-0 with one match remaining, sealing their historic series win.

Well done Afghanistan, congrats. Finding some real genuine match winners with the ball.

Farooqi and Rashid are the main pillars of the Afghan team atm. They can run through any side on their day.

What a great win for Afghanistan this is. Well deserving.

South Africa (33/50 ov, T:170) 170/3

South Africa won by 7 wickets (with 102 balls remaining)

In the third and final ODI between Afghanistan and South Africa in Sharjah, Aiden Markram's composed innings guided the Proteas to a seven-wicket victory, helping them avoid a series clean sweep. The match saw South Africa chase down a modest target of 170, following a brief wobble in the middle order, to finish the series on a high.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Afghanistan struggled to build momentum in their innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz stood out as the only batsman to offer significant resistance. His brilliant knock of 89 from 94 balls was the cornerstone of Afghanistan’s total. Unfortunately for Afghanistan, no other batsman managed to settle in and build partnerships around Gurbaz. The South African bowlers, led by Gerald Coetzee (3/28) and Tabraiz Shamsi (2/35), kept consistent pressure on the Afghan lineup.

Afghanistan was eventually bowled out for 170 in 46.2 overs, a total that seemed below par on a pitch that offered some assistance to the spinners but still had enough in it for comfortable chasing.

South Africa's chase got off to a solid start, but a mini-collapse saw them slip to 80-3, putting Afghanistan in with a slim chance of pulling off a win. However, Aiden Markram’s calm and unbeaten knock of 69 from 83 balls guided South Africa through the tricky period. Markram anchored the innings with support from Heinrich Klaasen, who remained not out on 29.

Their steady partnership ensured South Africa reached the target in 33.5 overs, sealing a seven-wicket victory. Though Afghanistan had already secured a historic series win by taking the first two matches, South Africa’s win salvaged some pride in what was otherwise a disappointing series for the Proteas.

First T20 win over Proteas would be huge - Stirling

Ireland captain Paul Stirling hopes to chalk up a maiden T20 victory over South Africa on Friday at the sixth attempt.

The sides meet in Abu Dhabi before completing the two-match series at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Sunday.

"It would be huge - South Africa are such a powerhouse in world cricket and have such a strong team," said the opener.

"So it would be good if we could manage to get over the line in the next few days - anything can happen in the T20 format so we are confident we can get a result."

South Africa boast a young squad for the T20s and three-match ODI series between the teams at the same venue, but they will still start favourites against a team five places below them in the T20 world rankings.

"They have a well balanced team with the most obvious attribute their middle order - there's a lot of power there and no doubt they will come hard," added Stirling.

"There's also their pace. It's a luxury to have where we're playing at as pace through the air is so important."

The Proteas, who reached the T20 World Cup final in June, and Ireland are starting a new cycle leading into the 2026 tournament in India and Sri Lanka.

Ireland failed to win any of their four games at the World Cup but Stirling is "extremely confident" the team will improve in the next two years.

"We've got extremely talented players and we want to get them in the best possible place for the next World Cup," he said.

"We're probably going to see new faces over the next six to 12 months and get that player pool expanded, getting more people playing international cricket. We need to start incorporating younger players and giving chances to different players as we go along."

South Africa are coming off an ODI series defeat by Afghanistan in Sharjah so are seeking to bounce back against the Irish.

"It's an exciting challenge and we as a team want to get back to winning ways," said skipper Aiden Markram.

"It's a young and maybe less experienced team against a very good Irish side with guys that are match-winners and guys that that have taken down any opposition that they've come across."

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Excellent performances from brothers Ross and Mark Adair helped Ireland Men defeat South Africa and draw the two-match T20I series in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Ross set Ireland on course with his maiden international hundred before Mark’s 4-31 with the ball claimed a dramatic 10-run win.

The former combined with Paul Stirling in a stunning opening partnership which teed up Ireland’s first innings total of 195-6, their highest T20I score against South Africa and 10th best of all-time in the format.

Their 137-run stand for the first wicket is also Ireland’s second-biggest T20I partnership, with Ross Adair becoming just the third Irish men’s player to hit a T20I century.

Adair’s innings was brutal, the 30-year-old hitting nine sixes and five fours in his knock of 100 from just 58 deliveries.

He joined Kevin O’Brien and Stirling in Ireland’s T20I hundred club in men’s cricket, delivering a showstopping display of batting in his 10th outing in the format.

Stirling played superbly himself with a rapid 52 off 31 balls – the Ireland skipper’s 24th half century in T20Is – but his contribution was overshadowed by the brilliance of his opening partner.

When Ireland were beaten in Friday’s first game in the series, it was South Africa’s opening batters who shone in a successful run chase and they started brightly again, putting on 50 for the first wicket before Graham Hume removed the dangerous Ryan Rickelton for 36.

Reeza Hendricks’ half century maintained the charge before being dismissed by Ben White and by the time South Africa captain Aiden Markram was bowled by Matthew Humphreys seven balls later, the Proteas were 130-3 and requiring 66 from 38.

The younger Adair and Neil Rock soon combined to account for Tristan Stubbs but Matthew Breetzke passed 50 and took South Africa to within 23 runs of victory with 12 balls remaining.

Adair subsequently took three wickets in the penultimate over, including that of Breetzke, before Hume (3-25) saw out the final over that claimed a major victory for Ireland.

The two sides now turn their attentions to the three-match ODI series, which kicks off at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Result

South Africa defeat Ireland in the 1st ODI comprehensively by a big margin of 139 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

Ireland lost to South Africa by 139 runs in the first of three one-day internationals between the sides in Abu Dhabi.

Opener Ryan Rickelton top-scored for South Africa with 91 as his fourth-wicket stand of 152 with Tristan Stubbs (79) laid the foundation for their side's score of 271-9 off their 50 overs.

Mark Adair took four wickets and Craig Young three.

Ireland's reply fell well short of their target as they struggled to 132 all out after 31.5 overs.
George Dockrell managed 21 and Andrew Balbirnie and Curtis Campher 20 apiece, while Lizaad Williams shone with the ball with figures of 4-35.

The sides recently drew their T20 series 1-1 and will meet again in ODI encounters at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Friday, 4 October and Monday, 7 October to conclude Ireland's season.

Ireland reply falls short

After making a steady start to their innings, South Africa suffered setbacks as they lost Tony de Zorzi (12), captain Temba Bavuma (4) and Rassie van der Dussen for a duck in three consecutive overs to lie 39-3 by the end of the ninth.
Rickelton smashed 91 off 102 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, as his partnership with middle-order batter Stubbs got their side back on track.

Rickleton fell in the 35th over and Stubbs six balls later to leave the score 198-5, but with the help of useful knocks from Bjorn Fortuin (28) and Lungi Ngidi (20 not out), South Africa progressed to post a creditable total.

Ireland's response began poorly as they lost skipper Paul Stirling for two in the first over and while fellow opener Balbirnie, restored to the line-up after sitting out the T20 encounters, and Campher (20), steadied the ship somewhat, the loss of the former saw them sit 38-2 by the end of the ninth over.

Wickets fell regularly thereafter to leave Heinrich Malan's side 61-5 and, although Dockrell, Andy McBrine (14) and Adair and Young (12 apiece) put up some resistance, the outcome always had an air of inevitability.

Ngidi and Fortuin backed up Williams' bowling effort with two wickets each

South Africa will face Ireland in the 2nd ODI of the series.

My bet is that South Africa will win here.

Proteas Men’s fast bowler Nandre Burger has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and the upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh due to a lumbar stress reaction.

Bavuma (35) retired hurt with an elbow injury with the score on 68-0 before Rickleton was dismissed on 40 to leave his side on 78-1.

Stand-in skipper Rassie van der Dussen added 35 before Kyle Verreynne and Stubbs put on 103 for the third wicket.

Stubbs followed up his 79 on Wednesday with another excellent knock and put together a 92-run partnership with Wiaan Mulder (43) as South Africa posted a total of 343-4.

Ireland need a strong start in response but were 7-2 after the early dismissals of Andrew Balbirnie and captain Paul Stirling.

Curtis Campher (17) and Harry Tector (20) guided Ireland to 44-2 before Lizaad Williams took two wickets in two balls to put South Africa firmly on top.

ABU DHABI: Proteas Men’s One-Day International (ODI) captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the third ODI against Ireland due to a soft tissue injury on his left elbow.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury during the second ODI on Friday after landing on his elbow while making ground at the non-striker’s end in the 12th over of South Africa’s innings. The injury prevented him from fielding.

Bavuma will return home with the rest of the squad on Tuesday and will consult a specialist. An update on the extent of his injury will be provided in due course.

Reeza Hendricks has been called up as his replacement. The 35-year-old will arrive in Abu Dhabi later today.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder has returned home today due to personal reasons.

Rassie van der Dussen will captain the team for the final match of the series on Monday. South Africa holds an unassailable 2-0 lead heading into the encounter, which is set to start at 15:30 local time.

Ireland beat South Africa in final Men’s ODI

Ireland Men ended their ODI series against South Africa Men in style on Monday, claiming a 69-run victory in Abu Dhabi with 23 balls to spare.

Ireland had tied the T20I series that preceded the three-game ODI series, which South Africa had claimed by virtue of winning the first two matches.

They ensured a winning finish with a superb all-round performance, beating South Africa in convincing fashion.

Captain Paul Stirling starred with the bat, making 88 from 92 deliveries, but there were a number of contributions throughout the order and Ireland’s seamers then drove home the advantage with ball in hand.

Stirling earlier called correctly at the toss for the first time in five attempts and, after electing to bat, flourished alongside Andrew Balbirnie.

The pair made 101 for the first wicket, setting a new best for Ireland’s highest opening partnership against South Africa in ODI cricket.

The opener brought up his half century, his 30th in the format for Ireland, before Balbirnie (45) pulled Lizaad Williams into the hands of Tristan Stubbs on the leg-side boundary just five runs short of his own 50.

Ireland’s skipper was unrelenting in the Abu Dhabi heat, before eventually departing in the 35th over.

Curtis Campher (34) and the returning Lorcan Tucker (26) provided further contributions, while Harry Tector’s rapid 60 from 48 was a welcome return to form for the 24-year-old and took Ireland to 284-9 from their 50 overs.

Both Mark Adair and Graham Hume quickly settled into their work with the new ball, picking up a wicket apiece to dismiss both openers and leave South Africa stunned at 8-2.

Adair then made it 10-3 by trapping stand-in skipper Rassie van der Dussen lbw at the start of the fifth over, the score now 10-3 and Ireland cock-a-hoop.

Kyle Verreynne (38) looked to find a way back for his team but couldn’t build on his start and by the time he fell to Craig Young, the Proteas were struggling at 59-4.

A 47-run partnership between Jason Smith and Andile Phehlukwayo frustrated Ireland until the latter top-edged a pull shot to Young, earning Fionn Hand a first wicket on his ODI debut.

Smith kept up the charge and reached a well-made half century but could only watch on as Bjorn Fortuin (11) was bowled by Matthew Humphreys and Williams became Young’s third wicket.

Ireland sensed victory but Smith moved up a gear and was closing in on a century until he gave a chance to deep third off the bowling of Hume, leaving Ireland just one wicket away from a famous win.

Hume picked up that wicket in the 47th over, delivering the perfect end to Ireland Men’s international year.
