There is a world cup of basketball? :))

I see good number of teams playing from all continents.. Why is this tournament not anywhere close to FIFA or even the Rugby WC?

This tournament started in 1950 by the way so it's been going on for a while

There's 32 teams competing

Obviously nothing can come close to the FIFA World Cup I repeat nothing

Their is a still a decent amount of following but not like FIFA or rugby

I think the Olympic Gold in Basketball is more prestigious than the WC Win. Every now and then the old US and USSR rivalry in Basketball at Olympics is mentioned but never heard about the WC history.

Winning Olympic gold in any sport is always more prestigious but doesn't mean winning a World Cup is not prestigious as well

Holders the United States suffered a shock 89-79 loss to France in the quarter-finals of the Basketball World Cup in China on Wednesday.

The US had won the past two World Cups and not lost in 58 international games, a run stretching back to 2006.

France were 51-41 ahead in the third quarter before the United States moved into a 72-65 lead, but the French fought back to take the victory.

Evan Fournier scored 22 points, while Rudy Gobert finished with 21.

France will play Argentina in the semi-finals on Friday, with Spain taking on either Australia or the Czech Republic in the other match.

This will be the first time the United States have failed to win a medal at the World Cup since 2002, when they finished sixth.

As well as winning the past two World Cups, they have also won the past three Olympic titles.

If Australia can find a way to win the World Cup of basketball than that will be something special

The U.S. came to China looking to again be the best in the world.

It’ll go home with the worst tournament showing in program history.

Such is the reality for the Americans now, assured of finishing no better than seventh at the World Cup after falling to Serbia 94-89 in a consolation game Thursday night. The previous worst finish for a U.S. men’s team in 45 tournament appearances was sixth at the 2002 world championships.

“We’ve committed to this from Day One,” U.S. guard Joe Harris said. “To get all the way to this point and just kind of have it abruptly come up short, it really stings.”

Serbia advances to the fifth-place game on Saturday (8 a.m. ET), to face the Czech Republic, while the United States will play Poland in the seventh-place game that day, too (4 a.m. ET). The Czech Republic beat Poland 94-84 in Thursday's other consolation bracket game.

The Americans -- the top-ranked team in the world -- will be seventh or eighth in China, depending on the outcome of their consolation finale Saturday. Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes scored 22 for the U.S., which got 18 from Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker and 16 off the bench from Milwaukee Bucks guard Khris Middleton.

Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Kings scored 28 for Serbia, which bolted to a 25-point lead and handed the U.S. its second loss in two days. Vladimir Lucic scored 15 for Serbia, which will play for fifth place Saturday. Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic showed off his usual all-around skills, finishing with nine points, three rebounds rebounds, seven assists and a pair of critical free throws with 20 seconds left to seal the win.

“It’s a really tough game to play against those guys,” Bogdanovic said. “I’m sure both teams were really upset after losing in the quarterfinals and we were just trying to make people happy.”

After the loss, center Myles Turner took to Twitter and shared his thoughts on those questioning Team USA's talent during this FIBA World Cup run.

"From 1-12 top to bottom this team this roster has sacrificed so much for our nation," Turner wrote. "Our summers, our bodies, our mental. We came up short can’t nobodies more upset than us but I refuse to tolerate any slander for our play. You cannot question our heart, our character or our spirit. We layed it all out on the line each and every game. Don’t disrespect us, this coaching staff or USA Basketball as a whole but respect the world basketball is an international game these countries are talented.

"... We’re also the ones who stepped up to the plate when others stepped down. We qualified our nation for the Olympics we got some work to do to rebuild a legacy that was left before us were on the wrong side of history indeed. But that’s gunna make the next medal that much sweeter!"

Serbia-U.S. game was widely expected to be one for gold this weekend. The prospects of that were hyped plenty going into the tournament -- especially after Serbia coach Sasha Djordjevic called out the Americans in a television interview by saying “if we meet, may God help them.” But all that was on the line Thursday night were bragging rights and a few world ranking points.

“There’s no regrets from our group in terms of what we’ve given, what we’ve sacrificed, the commitment everyone’s made to be away from their families, away from their teams, away from their organizations,” Barnes said. “There’s no regrets.”

Harrison Barnes lamented Team USA's slow start Thursday vs. Serbia.
Seemingly still smarting from a loss to France in the FIBA World Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, Team USA was playing roughly 24 hours after that defeat. It showed early on as the Americans trailed 32-7 after the first quarter and shot 3 for 16 from the field (19%). Serbia, on the other hand, was simply sizzling, hitting 64% of its shots overall and went 8 for 9 on 3-pointers as well.

Team USA warmed up considerably in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 36-26 off a dunk by Turner with 3:39 left and had it down to 44-40 by halftime. By the end of the third quarter, they had further trimmed the lead to 71-68 thanks to solid play from Middleton, Barnes, Walker and Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell.

U.S. coach Gregg Popovich lauded his team for making the comeback, basically 24 hours after seeing its medal hopes dashed by the quarterfinal loss to France.

“I can’t tell you how much I’ve been impressed the whole time with their character, their stick-to-itiveness and their persistence as they’re learning how to play together,” Popovich said. “Tonight was a great example of that.”

The last time the U.S. dropped consecutive games at the World Cup level was '02 at the world championships in Indianapolis, losing to Argentina by seven and Yugoslavia by three. The only times the Americans lost three straight was at the 1970 world championships and at the 2005 FIBA Americas tournament.

Czech Republic 94, Poland 84

Tomas Satoransky and the Czech Republic dropped Poland in FIBA action.
Vojtech Hruban scored 24 points, Tomas Satoransky added 22 and the Czech Republic rallied late to beat Poland 94-84 in a consolation game Thursday in Shanghai. Satoransky added 12 assists for the Czechs, who closed the game on a 20-7 run. Adam Waczynski scored 22 for Poland.

Freaking mad USA lost.

But we only sent scrubs to China for this tournament.

I wanna see this team next year for the Olympics:
Lillard, Beal, Butler, Griffin, Love, Fox, McCollum, Porter, Gordon, Drummond, LaVine, Ingram, Randle

Basically players on borderline playoff teams, but still good enough to win gold.

USA didn't send their best team and they underrated they other teams got what they deserved how ever Canada was horrible :( wasn't suspecting them to go far but they should have made the second round atleast

Argentina will face Spain in the Basketball World Cup final in China after beating France 80-66 in the semi-finals.

France could not repeat their quarter-final heroics, when they knocked out the USA, as Argentina dominated.

Earlier Spain beat Australia 95-88 in double overtime to claim their place in Sunday's Beijing final.

They were on the verge of going out but Australia missed a foul shot in the dying seconds with the game tied 71-71.

Spain took control in the second of two added periods to reach their first final since their 2006 win.

Their NBA champion Marc Gasol was his team's top scorer, the Toronto Raptors star hitting 33 points in the comeback victory, while point guard Ricky Rubio contributed 12 assists to go with his 19 points.

Patty Mills, the San Antonio Spurs point guard, was Australia's driving force, leading all scorers with 34 points.

He guided his team into an eight-point second-quarter lead, which increased to double figures in the third.

But, with victory within their grasp with 4.7 remaining, Mills missed one of two efforts from the free-throw line to allow Spain another shot in overtime, which they took at the second time of asking after the first period ended all square.

Super Scola
France's 10-point win over the USA in the previous round was one of the shocks of the tournament - even with the holders fielding under-strength squad.

But they were well beaten by a hard-working Argentine side inspired by veteran forward Luis Scola.

Argentina, who last reached the final in 2002 and won the inaugural competition in 1950, led from the first period, despite being the only quarter-final team without any current NBA players.

Scola, previously star of the world's top league, scored 28 points and took 13 rebounds as they went into half-time with a seven-point lead.

France struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just 39% from the field, while Rudy Gobert of Utah Jazz, who hit 21 points in the win over US, struggled to just three.

On Saturday the US play Poland in the seventh/eighth play-off, while Serbia face the Czech Republic in the fifth/sixth game.

France and Australia meet in the third place game before Sunday's final.

Would Australia have beaten Spain if they had Ben Simmons?

No lol.

Ben Simmons is trash.

He's only effective on teams with at least 3 sharpshooters which isn't very common.

Especially in a tournament, teams can shut down a one trick pony like Simmons.

Spain have beaten Argentina in the finals to become the champion of world basketball Spain have won the Fiba World Cup beating Argentina in the finals by a score of 95-75

This is Spain's 2nd World Cup win

Spain have beaten Argentina 95-75 to win the Basketball World Cup in Beijing their first title for 13 years.

The Spaniards scored 14 of the first 16 points and never lost their lead to the 2004 Olympic champions.

Phoenix Suns point guard and tournament MVP Ricky Rubio managed 20 points and three assists, while NBA champion and Toronto Raptors' Marc Gasol added 14 points and seven assists.

Both teams had previously qualified for next year's Tokyo Olympics.

Sergio Scariolo's side have now won two World Cup titles, their first coming in 2006.

Argentina, meanwhile, last reached the final in 2002 and won the inaugural competition in 1950.

Earlier in the day, France took their second successive World Cup bronze medal with a 67-59 win over Australia.

Spain have been so dominant in world sports for the past 30 years, whether it's tennis, futbol, basketball, field hockey or the olympics, they just keep winning even though they've been bankrupt and in recession for years.

Wish Pakistan could follow the Spanish model. You don't need to be an economic powerhouse to dominate world sports.
