Sony says it's "disappointed" not to be working with Disney on future Spider-Man films.

We might not see actor Tom Holland in new Marvel movies because a fresh deal can't be reached over the character.

The film rights to the superhero are owned by Sony - but he could appear in movies like Avengers: Endgame due to a deal between Sony and Marvel Studios - owned by Disney.

Sony says it hopes things "might change in future".

In a series of tweets, Sony thanked Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige for his "help and guidance" with the franchise.

Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland have all played Spider-Man on the big screen
It's complicated.

Spider-Man is a Marvel comic book character - but in 1999 Sony bought the film rights for the superhero.

Sony made five films of its own featuring the character - three with Tobey Maguire and two with Andrew Garfield.

In 2015 the studio struck a deal with Disney and Marvel Studios, to bring Peter Parker and his alter-ego into the MCU.

The deal meant Disney would co-produce and share profits from films featuring Spider-Man.

Since then he's been in five Marvel movies:

Captain America: Civil War
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Endgame
Spider-Man: Far From Home

Radio 1 and 1Xtra's film critic Ali Plumb points out that Tom is still contracted to Sony for two more films so "this doesn't mean we're not going to see him anymore" but the movies might look different.

"There's more of a risk for these new, only-Sony Spider-Man movies not being as good as previous Disney-made Spider-Man films."

But it could be an opportunity for Sony to be more "adventurous" and "edgy", Ali says, even if they can't reference other MCU characters.

"They will be forbidden from doing so because they don't own the rights to any of those Disney Marvel characters."

That's Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk and the rest.

Entertainment website Deadline has reported over the last few months that Disney and Sony were "unable" to reach new terms for funding of future movies.

And it was noticed at Comic-Con last month Marvel's announcements for its next phase of films and shows failed to include Spider-Man.

How is the Marvel world reacting?
Actor Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, has posted on Instagram, asking for Spider-Man to be returned to Marvel.

And Ryan Reynolds, who plays superhero Deadpool, answered a fan who'd asked if they'll see a Spider-Man and Deadpool movie saying "You can. But only in my heart".

The split between Sony and Disney also has people reacting online, from anger towards Sony, to fans who hope Tom Holland is OK.

Some have been using the hashtag #BoycottSony, saying they don't want to watch films coming out this year by the studio because of the Spider-Man announcement.

#SaveSpidey has also been trending in the UK this morning.

And a lot of fans have been sharing an old tweet from Stan Lee, the co-creator of Spider-Man who passed away last year.

I am happy with this split. There was too much ironman influence & cringe mcu humor in marvel's Spider-Man arc.
Spiderman has it's own massive universe. a spiderman movie should focus only on spiderman rather than try to make him iron man jr.

It will be interesting to see how sony move forward from here , another reboot or continue with current story ?

shaz619 so much like the comics/cartoon spiderman and his on and off relationship with MCU characters :))

I think it is better for Spider-Man character. They were turning Spider-Man into a secondary character.

Spider-Man can now have his own thing.

Actually This spiderman character was very near to cartoon comics except the last movie.

This is unfortunate because Fox jus got bought out by Disney so one of my fav episodes which Spiderman vs Wolverine I was looking forward to could had happened but alas the timing is remarkable lol.

recommend some good Spider-Man graphic novels or reading order ?
What's your take on iron man's presence in Spider-Man movies ? Don't you think it's too much.

I don’t know about graphic novels, for comics as such you can google bro, coz there are so many almost since 60s.

Or you can take shortcut and watch the spiderman cartoon like did but many details will be missed.

I do agree Iron man influence was too much but it jus got over and was hoping for some character development now but they pulled out.

Iron man plot got over but with mcu there will always be some sort of cross overs with other super heroes & sony doing venom on the side lines doesn't make sense.
That's why imo it's good that Spider-Man is with sony only from now on if they don't reach negotiation again.
But sony also need to deliver better product now like nolan's batman trilogy.

Sony got greedy, they no longer wanted to share profits with Disney/MCU even though Tom Holland's Spiderman was very much developed by MCU - now that the franchise has developed they want to go it solo.

What else do you expect with a kid as a spiderman? It made them a billion dollar as well.

My complaint is about strong ironman's presence in marvel's Spider-Man movies. Even villain's stories are linked with ironman.
Which leads to this peter parker being ironman jr or ironman's robin jokes among fans.

tom Holland is good Spider-Man. He deserves better storyline & good Spider-Man movie will always work on boxoffice. It doesn't need to accommodate mcu side plots for success. Even venom made 800 million despite being average movie.
That's why as spider-man fan I will be more happy if Spider-Man character stays with sony.

Ok the Ironman thing was very annoying. I am glad this won’t be a case anymore. My only concern is the marvel characters allowed to be used in these movies. Will Spiderman have access to all of his villains? Is the question.

Tom is a good Peter. I do not know about Spiderman. His version felt flat to me. Him as Peter was fine. I just did not like the High School setting. It was too Disney like.

I think majority of people likes tom. He is young & can remain as Spider-Man for a long time. So they have something to build on . Just that it needs to grow out of mcu plots which hopefully sony will handle it.

Sony owns movie rights of whole Spider-Man universe. They can bring any villains they want eg. Venom, goblin, morbius the vampire etc.

So true :yk3 I think this is a good move to be honest because the cross-overs were becoming too much and Spidey should be Spidey; not this whole "new Iron Man" **. What people have also overlooked is that Sony retain the creative team from the past 2 movies, they have really outclassed MCU here :afridi With the release of Venom there is a lot to look out for moving forward and who could forget the phenomenal job they did with the animated into the spider verse movie which is arguably the best spidey movie ever!

One which I read recently was Blue, it has a very demoralising scope/narrative but a fantastic read. Introduced a variety of villains and explores some very personal relationships. Graphic Novels can be read in any order, they are basically a collection of comics incorporated into a book for you to read in a convenient way from start to finish.

Blue also inspired the animated spectacular spiderman series, which compared to the 90s show in my opinion.

I dont kno much about the older spidermen, but the MCU one was amazing. I liked MCU's story of Iron Man mentoring Spider man.

I wonder what Sony will do henceforth. I think they have to go with a new story line and a new set of actors.

Thats fantastic than. Yeah no issue with this. They got so many comics to take references from, there is no stopping them from making a great Spiderman movie.
