Sri Lanka finishes World Cup on a high, overpowering the Netherlands in Saint Lucia

Sri Lanka has jumped the Netherlands to finish third in Group D, amid a drama-filled evening at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

The Netherlands’ hopes of sneaking into the Super Eights are over, beaten convincingly by a focused Sri Lankan side keen to finish their tournament campaign on a high.

The Dutch started the day still firmly in the hunt to progress, but that all changed as Bangladesh - simultaneously - took out the other Group D match being played, sealing progression for the Tigers.

The Netherlands won the toss and sent in the Lions. And despite not knowing exactly how Bangladesh’s match with Nepal was starting to pan out, the European outfit looked focused on the job at hand.

Sri Lanka made steady progress as the Powerplay unfolded, though, climbing towards 40 in the first five overs, before Paul van Meekeren took a key scalp in the sixth over, ending Kamindu Mendis’ innings (17 off 20). The Lions were 45/2 at the six over mark.

Runs were proving tricky to come by with more fielders scattered, until two fours in three balls to end the ninth over gave Sri Lanka momentum. Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva built pressure, pushing them to 74/2 at the midpoint of the innings and laying a strong platform.

Mendis finally went for 46 off 29, ending a 45-run partnership, but the stroke-making continued for Sri Lanka, as three de Silva boundaries brought up three figures for the Lions in the 13th over. Charith Asalanka joined the party at the change of ends, hitting a four and a six to keep things moving swiftly.

Tim Pringle picked up the crucial wicket of de Silva in the 15th over to keep the Netherlands in it. But Asalanka and Angelo Matthews made sure the foot stayed on the accelerator, adding six boundaries in three overs before Asalanka finally mistimed one – out for 46 off 21 in the 18th over.

Skipper Winindu Hasaranga picked up where Asalanka left off, joining Matthews to add more pain to the Netherlands’ innings in the field. The pair added 35 unbeaten runs to push the Lions above 200, registering the equal-top total of the tournament, finishing 201/6. Matthews made 30* off 15 balls.

The Dutch made an inspired start in reply, as openers Michael Levitt and Max O’Dowd squeezed as much out of the Powerplay as possible. O’Dowd (11 off 8) was removed in the fifth over, before Levitt (31 off 23) was stumped on the second-last ball of the sixth. 47/2 was a good return from the Powerplay, though, giving the Netherlands more than a chance.

Control started shifting in the seventh over when Vikramjit Singh (7 off 10) was removed. Next over, it was Sybrand Engelbrecht on his way and Hasaranga collected two wickets on the stroke of the innings’ midpoint to have the Dutch caught well behind parity.

The captain struck again in the 12th over, stumping Pringle, capping off a five-over period that brought five wickets. That had the Netherlands 83/7 with eight overs left.

Captain Scott Edwards did his best to keep the Dutch in the hunt, top scoring with 31 runs off 24 balls. So his dismissal in the 17th over effectively ended any faint chance the Europeans still had.

Sri Lanka wrapped it up, claiming the final scalp two balls later – the Netherlands were all out for 118.

By that stage, it was only pride left to play for anyway. Bangladesh joins South Africa out of Group D into the World Cup’s second round.

This was Sri Lanka’s only World Cup win, something to hang their hats on.

Wanindu, as a captain when looking back at the entire tournament, what do you thimk?

[Wanindu Hasaranga:]

Honestly, I should tell first I’m very sorry about this , as we know how good our team, but unfortunately, we didn’t get that game to first two matches. I think it was too late to win this match when we got that game to this. As the captain and a player I feel very sorry about this, coming to a world cup and getting out of from the very first round.

Wanindu, there were many complaints about batting, are you satisfied with the bowling as there was a 12 wide balls and a few full tosses specially in Bangladesh match? What do you think about bowling?

[Wanindu Hasaranga:]

Honestly, we know we have very good bowlers and they are experienced. And also there are a few fast bowlers and a few spinners on the bench as well. When we think of the bawling batelion, we are on the top of this tournament as well. Unfortunately I know our batting wasn’t good enough as we expected and thats why we had to get out of this tournament this early.

So in 50 Over tournament , you got out after the 9th place in champions’ trophy and in this tournament you had to get out from the first round . So what do you think that has to be improved in wide ball cricket?

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

So after every tournament we gather around and discuss that we have done several mistakes. So as a team I think we should decide if we have to rectify those mistakes. So as the captain I feel very sorry about this and I think we have not rectified our mistakes yet. When it’s an international team those mistakes has to be rectified to win any match. So I think we have discussed our mistakes in this world cup and from previous worldcup as well. So as we have not rectified those we had to get out of this tournament this soon.

So there were many complaints about Dananjaya De Silva being in the team , but he did his job well today. So what do you think about it and about Charith Asalanka’s batting?

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

We can’t complaint any player just because we fail one match. That’s why there are another six seven batsmen in the team. This is a team sport, so as a team we can’t expect everyone to score runs. So those two three players should be responsible about building the inim. That’s how we can win as a team. Both of them played well today and showed their skills and what they can do . And also in this type of hard pitches, players need some time to play. So they showed what they can do for the team.

So wanindu, on social media there are is a lot of critisism for Sri Lankan team, so as the captain what do you have to tell the fans about the performance of this team in the tournament?

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

First , as a player, we should not look at social media posts, as we know how sri lankan fans are supporting us, wherever we play the comment supporters even today we so in this location also they came to support us. So we can't blame it on them whats on social media as we know the support of a lot. We know they are with us then we are winning the matches and when we are losing the matches as well. So what's on social media are done by a small group of people to make other fans angry with us. So I think Sri Lanka fans are with us even we lose the matches. So we must be very lucky to have such kind of fans in Sri Lanka. And as a player the support that we get from them is very important when we are losing the matches. We are not playing the matches to lose the game we are playing for country. So the fans knows that too. So they support us even we are losing matches. So I’m very thankful for the srilankan cricket fans for supporting us.

Wanindu we came to the USA two weeks prior to the tournament and we practiced well. But why we couldn't adapt to the conditions of the America.

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

So first, we should thank the Sri lankan cricket board for taking us 10 days prior and organising a training camp like that. It’s a big help to get familiar with weather and time here.But I think when we are moving from the locations that we have practiced the conditions are not the same. So we adjusted ourselves as every possible way. Unfortunately we had our first match in New York and it was not successful. And then we went to Dallas to the next match and we could not adjusted to the pitch there as well. I think as a team and as a captain we take the full responsibility.

Wanindu,there are a lot of criticism about the pitches in this tournament. And as the captain of the what's your opinion about that?

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

Yes we can blame on pitches and make up stories when we lose a match. As professional cricketers we can't do that. All the other countries are also playing in the same pitches so we have to adjust ourselves to that. We have to admit that. That's why we come to these tournaments representing a country. We should have improved our cricket and not blame others. We could have adjusted ourselves to the same pitches as other teams are also playing on the same. I think we didn't do that. That's the main mistake here.

So was there any mistakes in the initial plan? It's important to do initial study about the country or the pitches. So there wasn't a thing like that?

[Wanindu Hasaranga]

No there has to be a thing like that. We saw that the pitch was different from area to area. So we should have been adjusted ourselves. But we didn't do that. So the most important study is the study that we do on that day.
