Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign moves to a new city, but it does so under a cloud of concern. Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury, a major setback for the co-hosts just as the competition begins to take shape. His absence leaves a significant gap in both their bowling plans and on-field presence. While the upcoming game against Oman may not seem daunting on paper, all eyes will be on how Sri Lanka’s attack adjusts without its lead spinner.

Thursday’s match marks the first game of the tournament at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, with a morning start. The shift from Colombo brings different conditions, though spin is expected to dominate once again, as slower bowlers have historically enjoyed greater success here compared to pacers. This places added responsibility on Maheesh Theekshana and Sri Lanka’s other spin options, especially with their star leg-spinner unavailable.

Sri Lanka’s batting also lacked fluency in their opener against Ireland. They were throttled in the middle overs, failing to hit a single boundary between overs 7 and 15, before Kamindu Mendis provided a much-needed late flourish. The top order will need to show more intent and find their rhythm, particularly with tougher challenges awaiting later in the tournament.

For Oman, the contest represents unfamiliar territory on multiple fronts. It will be their first-ever T20I against Sri Lanka, and quick adaptation to the conditions will be crucial. They arrive after a humbling defeat to Zimbabwe, where Sri Lanka’s pace and bounce exposed their vulnerabilities, leaving them all out for 103. An improved batting performance will be essential if they are to trouble the hosts in Kandy.

Sri Lanka delivered a commanding performance to thrash Oman by 105 runs, registering their second straight win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Set a daunting target of 226, Oman never looked in contention and finished on 120-9 in their 20 overs. Mohammad Nadeem was the lone bright spot, scoring 53 off 56 balls with three fours and a six. Wasim Ali added 27 from 20 deliveries, striking three sixes, but the rest of the batting unit failed to offer meaningful resistance.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana claiming two wickets each. Dunith Wellalage, Dushan Hemantha, and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with a wicket apiece to keep Oman under constant pressure.

Earlier, after electing to bat, Sri Lanka piled up an imposing 225-5 in 20 overs, powered by impressive knocks from Kusal Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, and captain Dasun Shanaka.

The hosts endured an early wobble as Pathum Nissanka fell for 13 off 11 balls to Sufyan Mehmood, while Kamil Mishara was bowled for eight by Jay Odedra, leaving Sri Lanka at 42-2 in 5.1 overs.

Rathnayake and Kusal Mendis then rebuilt the innings with a crucial 94-run partnership, during which Rathnayake brought up his maiden T20I half-century. He was eventually bowled by Jiten Ramanandi for a fluent 60 off 28 balls, laced with eight fours and a six, with the score at 136-3 in 13.3 overs.

Shanaka joined Kusal Mendis and injected further momentum into the innings, the pair adding 63 runs to take Sri Lanka past the 150-run mark. Shanaka smashed a rapid 50 off just 20 balls — including two fours and five sixes — before falling to Ramanandi.

Kusal Mendis was run out on the very next ball for 61 off 45 deliveries, an innings featuring seven boundaries, reducing Sri Lanka to 200-5 in 18.2 overs.

Sri Lanka closed strongly, with Kamindu Mendis remaining unbeaten on 19 from seven balls, striking one four and two sixes, while Wellalage added six runs to cap off a dominant batting display.
