Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, today thanked and paid tribute to Proteas bowling coach, Allan Donald, for his valuable guidance and contributions made to the national players over the past four years.

This appreciation was expressed after Donald confirmed his decision to step down from his role within the Proteas team management.

“Allan was and always will be a stalwart in South Africa having served his country with distinction both on and off the field,” commented Lorgat.

“He brought great knowledge and international experience to the Proteas set up and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”

“It’s never easy to lose a legend from your ranks but we respect Allan’s decision in the knowledge that we will seek his involvement in our cricket programmes in the future,” added Lorgat.

Donald was appointed in June 2011 as part of Gary Kirsten’s management team and continued in the role under Russell Domingo from August 2013.

The 48 year-old says it is “the right time to move on” and thanked the players, coaches and Cricket South Africa for their support over the years.

“I have had some time to reflect after the World Cup and have come to the conclusion that the time is right to move on,” he said. “It was always a big dream of mine to work in the South African cricket environment after my playing days and I was incredibly honoured to be given the opportunity. The last four years have been the best of my life and being involved with the Proteas in the 2015 Cricket World Cup was a goal I had set my sights on.

“I was blessed to have worked with the best bowling attack in the world over a four year period and leave with fond memories and experiences, particularly getting to the top of the ICC Test rankings. I have a lot of respect for the environment and culture that the players have created and I have no doubt that it will continue to grow under the leadership of Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.

“Lastly, I'd like to thank my family for their unconditional support throughout the hustle and bustle of international sport. All the best to Russell and the rest of the team. May the Proteas go from strength to strength and I will be following their journey with great interest.”

Proteas head coach, Domingo, thanked Donald for his contributions in the Proteas’ environment.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Allan,” Domingo said. “He is a professional with great insight and knowledge of the game and his expertise has added good value to our bowling department. One could never fault his commitment and dedication towards the team and that is shown by the respect he has earned from the players and coaches.

“He leaves behind a healthy bowling setup buoyed by some of the best bowlers in the world and he can be proud of the fruits of his labour over the last few years. I’m thankful for his contribution and support of me and I wish him well in the future.”

Cricket South Africa will consider a replacement in due course. The next assignment for the Proteas is the tour to Bangladesh (2 Test matches, 3 ODIs and 2 T20s) in July.

Great bowler and has done with South Africa bowling.

However, I do believe SA cricket needs to move on from the previous generation in order to win big tournaments. Too much mental baggage. In that sense, good for all concerned.

BCCI should make him an offer he simply can't refuse.

'I don't believe Allan Donald's reasons for quiting,' says de Villiers

Could the selection of Vernon Philander ahead of Kyle Abbott for the World Cup semifinal and the appointment of Charl Langeveldt as bowling coach consultant for the tournament prompted Allan Donald’s resignation?

Many cricket fans will think the opposite, but not former Proteas fast bowler Fanie de Villiers, according to News24.

Donald on Tuesday shocked the cricket world with his decision to step down after four years as Proteas bowling coach and said that “I have had some time to reflect after the World Cup and have come to the conclusion that the time is right to move on.”

But De Villiers said: “I do not believe it at all. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there’s another story behind his decision. Allan would have earned a lot of money as bowling coach of the national team and I don’t think you just turn your back on that.”

“Obviously, questions will be raised about what happened at the World Cup and whether the SMS story with Vernon Philander had anything to do with it.”

Wow didn't see that one coming. Big loss for SA.

Allan Donald appointed as assistant head coach for Kent

Matt Walker is Kent Cricket’s new head coach with Allan Donald as his assistant.

Walker, 43, spent 16 of his 19-year playing career at Kent, scoring more than 12,000 first class runs and top-scored in Kent’s Twenty20 Cup Final win in 2007.

He holds Kent’s record individual score at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, 275 not out against Somerset in 1996.

The Gravesend-born coach has also worked with Essex and England Lions and served for three years as assistant coach to Jimmy Adams, who stepped down in 2016.

Walker said: “'Having grown up as a Kent player and played 16 seasons for this great county, I am extremely honoured and proud to be offered the Head Coach role.

“We have an exciting and talented squad that I believe is capable of challenging across all three formats.

“I am relishing this opportunity and hope will work with Sam Northeast and Allan Donald to bring success to the club.”

He will be joined by former South Africa fast bowler Donald, 50, who has worked at Warwickshire and enjoyed coaching spells with the Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England national teams.

Donald, who has also coached at Indian Premier League side Royal Challengers Bangalore, said: “I would like to thank the club for giving me this opportunity to work with this very talented group as the assistant coach.

“I look forward to working closely with Matt Walker and Sam Northeast in forming a very tight relationship as we plot our way through the season.

“There is no doubt that I'm pumped for the new season ahead and can’t wait to meet all the players and backroom staff.”

The new coaching team will lead the squad on the FGS Plant Tour to the West Indies later this month before the county season starts on Friday 7 April.

Chairman George Kennedy CBE said: “Matt was the outstanding candidate from the recruitment process.

“He is a modern, innovative coach who is highly regarded by players and peers as shown by the work he has done with Kent and England.

“His knowledge and passion for the club is an added bonus.

“The addition of Allan Donald brings a fresh face and new voice to the staff who we hope will also help bring the best out of our seam attack

Sri Lanka hire Allan Donald as bowling coach

Sri Lanka Cricket Sunday announced they had hired former South African paceman Allan Donald as temporary bowling coach ahead of the Champions Trophy in England.

The 50-year-old will join as "consultant fast bowling coach" for two months in the run-up to the tournament starting on June 1, the Sri Lankan board said.

"Donald will join the team in their residential training at the Pallekele International Stadium where they will be undergoing a high-intensity training and conditioning programme from May 9-16," it said.

The South African, who is due to take up a coaching assignment with English county Kent next year, is due in Colombo on Monday.

Kent said Donald would join them in 2018 because of delays in obtaining a work permit.

Last week Sri Lanka named a 15-member squad led by Angelo Mathews for the Champions Trophy.

Sri Lanka Cricket said it hoped Donald would also train Sri Lankan pace bowling coaches Chaminda Vaas, Champaka Ramanayake, Ravindra Pushpakumara and Nuwan Zoysa.

Donald was one of Test cricket's top fast bowlers between 1992 and 2002, taking 330 wickets in 72 Tests at an average of 22.25.
