Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Sri Lanka Cricket are pleased to jointly confirm the two-match, Betway Test Series scheduled to be played in Centurion and Johannesburg from 26 December will continue as planned.

The series, which forms part of the ICC World Test Championship, is still on course and the organizations look forward to a successful and competitive clash between two teams that are equally thrilled to return to red-ball action.

Discussions SLC held with the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of Sri Lanka, Honourable Namal Rajapaksa, ended with the decision to honour the commitments made under the FTP. This was followed by an assessment conducted by the SLC Medical Unit headed by Professor Arjuna De Silva, who advised SLC to proceed with the series.

The Sri Lanka Men’s team will leave for South Africa as scheduled, while Head Coach Mickey Arthur, accompanied by a health specialist will travel with immediate effect to South Africa to further assess the situation and make necessary arrangements for the team’s arrival.

CSA Acting CEO, Ms. Kugandrie Govender said:

“Cricket South Africa appreciates the ongoing support from Sri Lanka Cricket under the leadership of Ashley de Silva, who has never wavered in its willingness to engage us in important and open discussions around our plans and the state of our readiness for the tour. We are thankful that these discussions have allayed any trepidation around CSA’s ability to successfully host home tours in these unpredicted times.

“As always, we are excited to host the Sri Lankan team in this important, World Test Championship series that will yield crucial points towards the points table for the eventual winners. We are also certain that cricket fans around the world will tune in for another series of thrilling cricket on display.”

Schedule for all teams seems to be getting quite hectic now.

De Kock named Proteas Test captain for 2020/2021 season as three new Test call-ups are made for Sri Lanka tour

Friday, 11 December 2020

Quinton de Kock will lead the Proteas’ Test squad for the 2020/2021 season. The decision comes as Cricket South Africa (CSA) also names the squad that will take on Sri Lanka in the two-match, Betway Test Series to be played over the traditional Boxing Day and the New Year’s windows. The fixtures will form part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

De Kock’s appointment for this season is motivated by the light Test cricket load on this season, with the Proteas only playing three series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia respectively. The National Selection Panel led by Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, is confident of De Kock’s leadership capabilities and the leadership he has shown so far and will spend the next few months finalizing the appointment of the player who will take on the permanent role.

Mpitsang said:

“We are satisfied, as the National Selection Panel, with the decision that we have made to ensure continuity within the team, while we work towards making the best decision for its future without the pressure of time constraints. Quinton (de Kock) is happy to continue in the role for the next season and is comfortable with the balance of the workload and we back him fully as a captain.

“We are also pleased with the leadership group in the team and are cultivating a strong individual leadership culture at the same time, so that the team produces a sustainable stream of potential captains for the future.”

In other exciting team news, Sarel Erwee, Glenton Stuurman and Kyle Verreynne have received maiden Proteas Test call-ups for the tour, while the latter’s former South Africa under-19s captain, Wiaan Mulder, makes a return to the national team after a period of prolonged injury kept him out of action.

Thirty-one-year-old Erwee has enjoyed a long period of consistently good performances which have culminated into his call-up for this tour, not least of which was his 199 in the Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ CSA 4-Day Domestic Series season-opener against the Imperial Lions last month. He averages 60,28 with 469 runs in eight innings so far in the competition.

Stuurman will make an exciting addition to the Proteas’ bowling attack. The 28-year-old, right-arm medium-pacer from Oudtshoorn boasts an impressive 4-Day Series record of 181 wickets from 46 matches at a bowling average of 21.28 for the Warriors. His best bowling figures of 7/12 are capped off by a high score of 81 from his overall 671 runs, making him a player to look out for in this format.

The last season has been an impressive one for 23-year-old Verreynne in the 4-Day Domestic Series. He amassed 551 runs in 11 innings, at an average of 55,10, including two centuries and three half-centuries for the Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras. Before joining the national team for the limited overs tour against England, he had deposited 247 runs in two matches, at an average of 61,75 to his competition account.

To say that the Proteas will be sporting a confident batting unit would be putting it lightly. Aiden Markram, who had his Test summer cut short by a fractured finger last season, has been outstanding for the Momentum Multiply Titans in the first few rounds of this season’s 4-Day Series, smashing three centuries and returning a total of 469 runs in four matches, at an average of 78,16. Keegan Petersen has a century and half-century under his own belt for the Dolphins, averaging 57,66 in the competition, while Mulder brings much-need all-rounder capabilities into the fold with a fresh, unbeaten century from last week to his tally for the Lions, also enjoying an above-50 average (59,25).

Kagiso Rabada and Dwaine Pretorius are not yet fit enough for the physical exertions of Test cricket as a result of injuries picked up during the England tour. They and one or two other players being considered by the Selectors will go through assessments in the next few days to see whether they will be fit enough to be added to the squad ahead of the second match. An update will be provided next week.

Lungi Ngidi will therefore lead the pace attack with Anrich Nortje and Beuran Hendricks, who both impressed last summer against England. Ngidi missed out on Test cricket last season because of injury.

The visitors made history in February 2019, when they became the first Asian team to win a Test series in South Africa after emphatically beating the hosts 2-0. They are currently in fifth place on WTC the points table with 27 matches played and South Africa is sixth with 23 matches played.

“It goes without saying that we are very excited about the choices we have made for the Test squad,” Mpitsang continued. “The individuals in the team are a testament to the fact that hard work will bring its rewards and the Selection Panel, and I are eager to see what the new call-ups have to offer.

“While we may be on the “young” side in terms of Test cricket experience, we believe that the team will more than make up for it when put to the test, so to speak. South Africa is fortunate to boast a lot of depth thanks to our cricket pipeline, and places for every spot in our national teams are highly contested. It has not been an easy task to bring it down to this final squad of 15.

“This series is particularly important for our ICC World Test Championship campaign and the crucial points that it comes with.

“We are looking forward to what promises to be a competitive series and getting a good look at the players that we have in hand. Our last home Test encounter against Sri Lanka did not end in our favour and we are keen to see an emergence of the potential we know this team holds.

“Test cricket is a career pinnacle for every player and is the culmination of many years of hard work and graft, so we know we will not have a shortage of dedication from the players who will don the green cap. I wish Mark Boucher, Quinton de Kock, the team and its support staff all the best for this important tour,” Mpitsang concluded.

Proteas Test squad against Sri Lanka:

Quinton de Kock (captain, Momentum Multiply Titans), Temba Bavuma (Imperial Lions), Aiden Markram (Momentum Multiply Titans), Faf du Plessis (Momentum Multiply Titans), Beuran Hendricks (Imperial Lions), Dean Elgar (Momentum Multiply Titans), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Lungi Ngidi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Rassie van der Dussen (Imperial Lions), Sarel Erwee (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Anrich Nortje (Warriors), Glenton Stuurman (Warriors), Wiaan Mulder (Imperial Lions), Keegan Petersen (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Kyle Verreynne (Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras).

Migael Pretorius receives maiden Proteas call-up

Wednesday, 16 December 2020

VKB Knights seam bowler Migael Pretorius has been called up to the Proteas Test squad ahead of the Betway Test Series against Sri Lanka starting on Boxing Day. This is the player’s first national call-up.

The 25-year-old from Vereeniging has had an exceptional season so far in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) 4-Day Domestic Cup under the coaching of former Proteas paceman, Allan Donald. He is currently third on the tournament’s Leading Wicket Takers table with 19 scalps from five matches and best bowling figures of 7/102 against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their season opener last month.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang said:

“We’re pleased to include Migael in the Proteas Test squad for the Sri Lanka series. We’re big on rewarding consistently good work and the player has done a lot to make a case for himself.

“We hope that this experience will be a great learning one for him and that this can serve as encouragement for players across the country, showing them that their chances may not be as far off as they think.”

The Proteas will gather in Pretoria on Saturday, 19 December to begin their preparation.

Kagiso Rabada and Dwain Pretorius have not yet been medically cleared to participate in the tour.

This could be a problem for the SA v SL series

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday, 17 December 2020 confirmed the postponement of round six of the 4-Day Domestic Series.

The decision to postpone the upcoming round of four-day matches, which were scheduled from 20-23 December, comes in light of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic which is currently affecting South Africa. In addition, some of the host stadiums are in COVID-19 hotspots.

Director of Cricket Graeme Smith said: "In the interest of Cricket South Africa's duty of care to its franchise players, support staff and stadium personnel and in accordance with Government health and safety regulations, CSA has opted to postpone the final round of domestic fixtures of 2020."

"Players will be granted an extended break until the start of the Momentum One-Day Cup, which gets underway on 8 January 2021.

"CSA is committed to mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020/21 season, with the upcoming two-match Betway Test Series between South Africa and Sri Lanka being played in a bio-secure environment, which is a more controlled space than the domestic competition, concluded Smith.

The postponed matches will be played at a yet to be scheduled date in the new year. The Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras were expected to host the VKB Knights in Cape Town, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins were scheduled to travel to Port Elizabeth to take on the Warriors, while the Imperial Lions were all set to host local rivals the Momentum Multiply Titans in the first Jukskei Derby of the season in Johannesburg.

This is going to be a re-occurring problem until the vaccine has been properly distributed. My opinion is they should select 2/3 venues and use them as neutral grounds for all teams to visit, maybe uae, sri lanka and Aus. At least then they can have some consistency and control over the conditions

Sri Lanka have named a 22-man outfit for their upcoming World Test Championship series against South Africa and England.

Angelo Mathews is named as part of the squad but misses the tour to South Africa due to injury.

The Dimuth Karunaratne-led outfit features several uncapped Test players in Minod Bhanuka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Asitha Fernando, Santhush Gunathilake and Dilshan Madushanka. Gunathilake and Madushanka are the only ones in the squad who haven't played any form of senior international cricket.

The series in South Africa, which will kick off at Centurion on 26 December, and then move to Johannesburg for the second and final Test, marks Sri Lanka's first Test series since January.

It will also be their third series in the World Test Championship. In two series so far, they have won one of four matches they've played and are currently placed sixth in the table.

Following the two Tests against South Africa, they will return home to play England in two Tests at Galle between 14-26 January, with Mathews expected to return.

Squad:
Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Kusal Janith Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Oshada Fernando, Dhananjaya De Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Minod Bhanuka, Lahiru Thirimanne, Lasith Embuldeniya, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera, Dasun Shanaka, Santhush Gunathilake, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has included three more players to the Proteas squad ahead of the Betway Test series against Sri Lanka. This forms part of the organization’s plan to integrate more players at the conclusion of the latest round of the CSA 4-Day Cup. Former South Africa under-19s captain, Raynard van Tonder, Lutho Sipamla and Dwaine Pretorius make up the trio.

This is a maiden Proteas call-up for van Tonder, while Sipamla will be similarly excited as this is his first inclusion into the Test squad.

Van Tonder has been exceptional with the bat in this season’s 4-Day Cup. He is the top run scorer of the competition so far with 604 in five matches at an average of 67.11. The 22-year-old notched up a career-best double ton (261 balls) for the VKB Knights in their fixture against the Imperial Lions just this week. That, coupled with the two centuries and half-century already in his tally for the competition, makes for an exciting talent and addition to the national team.

Pretorius has made great progress from the hamstring injury he picked up last month just before the start of the England tour. He would have completed the last step of the CSA Return to Play protocol by playing in the now postponed round of the 4-Day Cup and will instead work closely with the team’s medical staff and coaches to ensure that he is Test match-ready.

Kagiso Rabada has not yet been medically cleared to play.

The team will assemble in Pretoria to begin preparation for the tour on Saturday, 19 December.

Proteas COVID-19 test results

Friday, December 18, 2020

Cricket South Africa (CSA) can confirm that two members of the Proteas team have returned positive COVID-19 results following their scheduled first round of testing ahead of the team’s entry into the Bio-Secure Environment for the Betway Test series against Sri Lanka.

These tests, which form part of the CSA COVID-19 protocol for the tour, took place on Wednesday and Thursday.

The players will no longer form part of the Test team and will observe the COVID-19 protocols, including isolating with immediate effect. CSA’s medical team will monitor them to ensure their health and well-being.

CSA can also confirm that no other players in the currently named squad were deemed close contacts after contact tracing procedures were conducted.

The team will assemble in Pretoria to begin preparation for the tour on Saturday, 19 December

Rare moment where Sri Lanka have their full contingent of seamers to pick from. Hope Mickey gets the best out of them in a return to his home country.

South Africa have included a raft of new faces so clearly they're going through a tricky transition.

A chance for South Africa to get some new players international experience and off to a good start.

Cricket South Africa is pleased to report that the entire Proteas team has returned negative results from the COVID-19 tests that were conducted this morning. This is the fourth and final round of scheduled testing ahead of the first Betway Test of the two-match series, beginning on Boxing Day.

Any interesting SL or South African players to watch out too ?

In 2019 I remember Srilanka won the two match tests series 2-0

Both matches they chased down the fourth inns target.

They have a good team actually

Watch out for oshada, kusal mendis,

Any interesting SL or South African players to watch out too ?

These are few interesting ones (New and upcoming), not sure how many will get a game.

For SA; Migael Pretorius (Little I have seen looks quick), Glenton Stuurman (Pacer, has a better chance to play over Pretortus due to quota), Wiaan Mulder (All rounder; in SA considered to be their best after Kallis) and then couple of young batsmen Kyle Verreynne, and Raynard van Tonder. Team combination will have to revolve around quota.

For Srl: Dilshan Madushanka (20 year old left arm pacer), Santhush Gunathilake (21 year old fast bowling all rounder), Wanindu Hasaranga (Leg spin all rounder, will be debuting in test cricket if gets a game), Asitha Fernando (23 year old pacer) and come back after injury for Chameera.

SL have a very good chance to win the series given that neither Rabada nor Pretorius are fit for the first match.

I'm excited to see some test drama again. Not really sure what to expect given the state of the team, but I think we'll be in for really close games.

South Africa have lost 2 out of their last 25 tests at Centurion and beaten Sri Lanka in every test they have played at Centurion.

I would be shocked if South Africa didn't win this game.

couple of years ago sri lanka won a Test series vs south africa in both of the test. Srilanka still got it seems.

South Africa will make a "meaningful" anti-racism gesture when it takes the field against Sri Lanka on Boxing Day here, after failing to do so during the T20I series against England last month.

The first Test against Sri Lanka starts on Saturday and coach Mark Boucher said the South African team would look to express its support for inclusion after its inaction in the last series, which attracted criticism from many quarters.

"We've had a lot of discussions since we've come into the bubble about this, especially after what the board statement was and the guys have come up with a meaningful gesture," Boucher said during a virtual press conference on Friday.

"That''s something the players will share with everyone before match day," he added.

Cricket South Africa''s (CSA) interim board had criticised the team''s response to Black Lives Matter (BLM) last week but made it clear that they would not force anything on them. And Boucher was appreciative of that.

"We appreciate the board isn't looking to compel the team into doing anything one way or the other, and that they are happy to allow the team to go through their process and come up with something meaningful to them.

"We are happy to engage further with them and what they would like to discuss at a more appropriate time," the former national team wicketkeeper-batsman said.

The BLM has gripped the world since the killing of African-American George Floyd''s earlier this year in the US.

Proteas seamer, Kagiso Rabada has been medically cleared of the right adductor muscle strain injury which saw him ruled out of the Betway One-Day International Series against England last month. He will join the Test squad, which is currently on Day Three of the first Betway Test match against Sri Lanka from today (Monday).

The 25-year-old has successfully gone through all the COVID-19 and pre-Bio-Secure Environment (BSE) entry protocols and is expected to enter the BSE before the start of the second session today.

Migael Pretorius has been released from the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE) due to a muscle injury to his right shoulder. He will go back to his franchise for rehabilitation.

Beuran Hendricks has been reinstated to the Proteas Test squad following the completion of thorough and successful COVID-19 and pre-BSE entry protocols. He joined the team yesterday evening.

The left-arm seamer will begin training with the team ahead of the second Betway Test match against Sri Lanka with immediate effect.

South Africa is currently 1-0 up in the two-match series.

PRETORIA (Reuters) -South Africa will go into the second test against Sri Lanka with the same top six batsmen but coach Mark Boucher acknowledges the return of fit-again fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is no certainty.

The home side will look to wrap up the two-match series in the second test that starts in Johannesburg on Jan. 3, having completed a convincing innings and 45-run victory in the first in Pretoria.

South Africa had not scored more than 284 in any of their previous 13 test innings, leading to question-marks around a number of their top six, but an impressive first innings total of 621, albeit against an injury-depleted Sri Lanka attack, has cemented Boucher’s thinking for now.

“We just got 600, why would I want to change our batting order?” he told reporters. “In test cricket, you wait for your opportunity to come. We’ve got a couple of very good batters waiting in the wings and we will keep working with them so they are ready.

“For now, it will be very difficult for me to swap a batting order that has been through a couple of tough times of late and played well. I’ll take the 600 and keep working on that.

“We’ve got tough test series coming up against Pakistan and Australia. It’s no time to start experimenting.”

Boucher admits there will be the temptation to include leading strike bowler Kagiso Rabada but says they will have to be “smart” over their use of him this season.

“Sometimes with bowlers you want to play a guy for the sake of playing him because he is your top bowler, but you need to consider his workloads, from a mental and physical side.

“We want to play KG (Rabada) all the time, but he has got to get his workloads up or there is a high risk of him getting injured.”

South Africa have included left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks in their squad for the second test after he passed COVID-19 protocols having tested positive before the team went into camp for the series.

Uncapped seamer Migael Pretorius has been released after suffering a shoulder injury in training.

Raynard van Tonder has been released from the Proteas Test squad due to a fractured finger on the left hand. The injury took place during the team’s practice session on Friday.

He will return to his franchise for rehabilitation and no replacement will be named for the second and final Betway Test match against Sri Lanka beginning tomorrow.

South Africa is 1-0 up in the two-match series.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa will not risk the fitness of lead attack bowler Kagiso Rabada despite a return to their squad and he will miss out the second test against Sri Lanka, which starts at The Wanderers Stadium on Sunday, officials said.

Rabada suffered an adductor muscle strain that ruled him out of the one day international Series against England last month and left him sidelined for the first test win over Sri Lanka in Pretoria.

The 25-year-old paceman was recalled to the squad for the second test, suggesting he would lead an otherwise inexperienced attack as South Africa seek to complete a 2-0 series whitewash.

But team officials on Saturday said Rabada would not be considered.

“The coaches are very happy with his progress but in terms of work load, they’d like to make sure he is in the right space to be able to compete fully for the test series against Pakistan as well as Australia,” said team spokesperson Sipokazi Sokanyile.

South Africa tour Pakistan later this month for the first time in 14 years, where they play two tests and three Twenty20 internationals.

Australia are then due to play three tests in South Africa in February and March.

Rabada has taken 197 test wickets at average of 22.95 in 43 appearances for South Africa.

Rabada an ATG should be rested and unleashed to destroy the Aussies when they tour.
