"Still hopeful that Pakistan will be arriving fairly soon": England director of cricket Ashley Giles

England director of cricket Ashley Giles does not believe Pakistan's tour is in doubt despite three members of the visitors' squad testing positive for coronavirus.

Pakistan are scheduled to fly to the UK on Monday for three Tests and three Twenty 20 matches this summer.

"We're far enough away from the Test series to not worry about that too much at the moment," said Giles.

"We're still hopeful that Pakistan will be arriving fairly soon."

Batsman Haider Ail, fast bowler Haris Rauf and leg-spinner Shadab Khan showed no symptoms before testing positive on Sunday and have now been told to self-isolate.

Almost all of the rest of the players and management staff had tests on Monday, with those results due on Tuesday.

"It's a concern, and I'm most concerned about the players who have tested positive and their welfare," added Giles, who played 54 Tests for England.

"There are some more test results coming out from the rest of the group, so we'll see what that says."

As of Tuesday morning, there had been 185,034 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Pakistan, resulting in 3,695 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

England's matches this summer, beginning with three Tests against West Indies, are set to be played behind closed doors in bio-secure environments at Southampton and Old Trafford.

England's 30-man training group will arrive in Southampton on Tuesday to prepare for the series with the Windies, which starts on 8 July.

Giles continued: "The situation in Pakistan is not great at the moment and our thoughts go out to the whole country.

"All of this has uncertainty. We know how fast moving this has been around the world, so we have been very careful at every step. Do we really know what is around the corner? No.

"The bubble at Southampton and Old Trafford, we are trying to create environments that mitigate as much risk as we possibly can."

Pakistan named a 29-man squad for the tour, with four additional players put on standby in case of positive coronavirus tests.

And Giles does not believe the tour would be placed in further jeopardy even if more positive tests are returned on Tuesday.

"We are still far enough out even if a number of those tests are still positive," he said.

"There are a number of hurdles to cross. We're hopeful that we can get international sport on it will be a real fillip for people around the world."

Meanwhile, New Zealand's two-Test tour of Bangladesh, which was scheduled for August, has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Looks like ECB also not concerned but 11 players being positive is an embarrassment for Pakistan.

Them reports are from yesterday and now more people are being fount out that they have Corona ecb should delay the tour atleast by 1 week

What a potential loss of 380 million pounds can do to decision making

He is talking nonsense.

There is no way ECB can trust PCB to be mindful.

We have just seen 10 Pakistani players get infected because of PCB’s incompetence.

There is no way our players should be traveling anywhere at the moment.

Stop being a hypocrite! The ECB could care less if Pakistani players are mindful or if their families die from covid! They are only in it for business. Stop your bias now!

To give an idea of how England do this:

All the 30 negative-returned English cricketers will undergo a second round of COVID-19 tests before entering the Ageas Bowl’s bio-secure bubble for full-scale training for the series against West Indies.

According to a report in Sky News, the players and around 15 support staff will be tested before they isolate themselves in their hotel rooms for the first 24 hours while their results are received.

The players are staying at the Hilton Hotel, which is attached to the stadium. All 30 players returned negative in the first round of coronavirus testing 10 days ago.

The three-match Test series against the West Indies will begin here from July 8 but before that, a trimmed 20-member home team will play a intra-squad warm-up game at the same venue.

The three-day practice game will conclude on July 3.

From Thursday, when the first behind-closed-door training session starts, the players will be tested twice weekly while continuing with daily thermal screenings.

Amid the constant reminders about social distancing, the players will head to the ground for practice each morning through a tent with thermal cameras to check for any coronavirus symptoms.

The Ageas Bowl has been divided into zones with only the players and key support staff permitted entry to certain areas.

West Indies, which won the last series between the two teams at home, will be defending the crown this time.

This will be first international cricket fixture since the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world of sports to a standstill.

Nathan Lyon could only smile when asked about the prospect of playing Test cricket in England this winter.

"It just sounds like England want the Ashes back ASAP, " Lyon quipped.

COVID-19 uncertainty has created the ideal atmosphere for speculation to grow throughout sport, especially its scheduling.

Question marks hover over Australia's home ODI series against Zimbabwe in August, the Twenty20 World Cup it was due to host in October-November, and a one-off Perth Test against Afghanistan slated for November.

A limited-overs tour of England, originally scheduled for July then pushed back to September as England grappled with the health crisis, looms as the likely coronavirus comeback for Justin Langer's team.

But even that trip is now the subject of intense speculation after 10 Pakistan players tested positive to COVID-19.

There is a school of thought the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) could ask Cricket Australia to extend its team's stay - potentially including some red-ball action - should the Pakistan series be canned.

"We would look at that (contingency plans) if that happened," England's director of men's cricket Ashley Giles said.

CA and the ECB remain in near-constant dialogue about the limited-overs tour, with Langer suggesting last week there is a good chance it will go ahead.

However, CA is yet to be asked about the prospect of playing Tests.

In the event that red-ball action is hastily scheduled then the urn is unlikely to be up for grabs, as was the case when the rivals played a one-off Bicentennial Test in 1988.

"I've got no idea when we're playing next or when potential tours are or anything," Lyon told reporters on Wednesday.

"There's so many balls up in the air ... I'm not qualified to be making any arrangements.

"We know something will come eventually. It's just about getting some really good preparation under our belt."

Lyon, dumped from the one-day squad as part of selectors' overhaul after the 2019 World Cup, is keen to be part of the landmark tour of England.

"I'm still putting my hand up for selection in white-ball cricket," he said.

"All I can do is make sure I'm training well and giving positive feedback to the Australian coaches."

Lyon is also keen to help Adam Zampa, who shifted back to NSW during the off-season in pursuit of an elusive baggy green, improve his red-ball bowling in pre-season training.

The offspinner suggested he will keep a close eye on the upcoming Test series between England and West Indies, which starts in a fortnight and will be the first major indicator of how much COVID-19 rules will affect the sport.

"You're not allowed to put saliva on the ball. I think spinners might open the bowling," Lyon joked.

"I don't think it's going to change too much, especially here in Australia. I can't see us picking three spinners at the Gabba."

Pakistan to arrive in the UK on Sunday

The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that the Pakistan men’s cricket team will arrive in the United Kingdom on Sunday 28 June to start preparation for this summer’s tour of England, which includes three Test matches and three Vitality IT20s. The behind-closed-doors schedule for these fixtures will be announced in due course.

They will start a 14-day isolation period at Blackfinch New Road, Worcester before transferring to Derbyshire’s The Incora County Ground on Monday 13 July to accelerate their preparation ahead of the first Test, which will include two four-day internal warm-up matches.

All members of the tour party will have been tested prior to travel. Those who are testing positive for COVID-19 will not be permitted to travel with the advance group on Sunday.

Pakistan squad to train at The Incora County Ground

The Pakistan men’s cricket team will hold a training camp in Derby next month, in preparation for their summer tour of England.

The England & Wales Cricket Board has today confirmed that the touring group will arrive in the United Kingdom on Sunday 28 June ahead of three Tests and three Vitality IT20s against England. The behind-closed-doors schedule for these fixtures will be announced in due course.

They will start a 14-day isolation period at Blackfinch New Road, Worcester before transferring to The Incora County Ground, Derby on Monday 13 July to accelerate their preparation ahead of the first Test, which will include two four-day internal warm-up matches.

All members of the tour party will have been tested prior to travel. Those who are testing positive for COVID-19 will not be permitted to travel with the advance group on Sunday.

Derbyshire County Cricket Club Chief Executive, Ryan Duckett, said:

“England’s series against Pakistan is important for the whole game and we’re pleased to have the opportunity to play our part in supporting the return of cricket.

“Our venue and groundscare team at The Incora County Ground have been working hard throughout this lockdown period and we look forward to providing international-standard practice facilities for the training camp next month.”

“We have made alternative arrangements for the Derbyshire squad to train at Repton School during the month of July and I would like to thank them for their support.”

Worcester!

Quite auspicious for Pakistan! Imran Khan went to school at Worcester Royal Grammar School and began his English County career for Worcestershire before leaving for Sussex.

The hotel at Worcester’s New Road Ground is a Premier Inn: they claim to be 3 star properties which is awfully creative.

They have a decent restaurant but no other facilities whatsoever, which I always think is a good thing for a sports team - the similar hotel at Kimberley was the key to Uruguay’s run to 4th place in the 2010 World Cup and victory in the 2011 South American Championship. It’s the kind of place where you can build a team in a camp.

The drawback however is huge. If any of the Pakistan cricketers returned a False Negative Coronavirus result - which is 30% likely - the two and a half hour drive from Manchester Airport to Worcester will basically allow them to infect the whole team!

I think they are flying tomorrow.. did they get the results of the reserve players and what about the second round of tests for all of them.. Have they announced the final list of players travelling..

The 30% false negative rate applies to 1 test. But all these cricketers have had 2 tests, further reducing the chances of someone "slipping through the net". And who knows, they may be required to wear FFP3 masks for the drive to Worcester.

Saeed Ajmal remains a big favourite there.

I just hope the local Pak community don't try to interfere in the Pakistan squad's plans.
