Full name: Ahmed Bashir

Born: December 10, 1995, Vehari

Major teams: Lahore Whites, Lahore Blues, Lahore Eagles, Islamabad, Khan Research Laboratories

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium

Height: 5ft 11inch

Getting into cricket

My passion for cricket began due to my grandfather Bashir Haider. He was a pace bowler who played first-class cricket and also played a few matches for Pakistan A. He would take me along to his matches when I was very young and encouraged me to bowl. I would watch his bowling with great interest and even at that age, I dreamt of becoming a fast-bowler one day. I told my family members that one day I will also become a fast bowler, and my family really supported me in my quest to become a professional cricketer. My father was also a keen follower of cricket and he encouraged me to fulfil my dream of becoming a cricketer; however, he also stated to me that I should not ignore my studies and ensured that I studied as well as played cricket.

School cricket

I went to school at Government Model High School in Vehari and was captain of the cricket team in 2009. The coaches at the school really helped me with my early development as a cricketer, but it soon became apparent that if I wanted to become a professional cricketer, I would have to move away from Vehari and look to develop as a cricketer in a larger city where there were better facilities.

Growing up in Vehari

Vehari is famous around the world for the great pace-bowling legend Waqar Younis who is of course from Burewala. Waqar has inspired many pace bowlers from Vehari, Burewala and Gaggo Mandi and this region produces a lot of pace bowlers such as the aforementioned Waqar Younis, Mohammad Zahid, Nadeem Iqbal and Mohammad Irfan.

Multan Under-16s

I played at the Under-16 level for Multan Region alongside the pace bowler Zia-ul-Haq, and I had the pleasure of working with Nadeem Iqbal who was working as a coach for Multan Region. However, the problem was that facilities in Vehari were limited and the chances to impress were few and far between. My father said to me that if I was serious about making it as a cricketer, I would have to make some sacrifices and leave Vehari and move to Lahore.

Moving to Lahore in 2010

I moved to Lahore with my mother, sister and brother, whilst my father carried on living in Vehari as he had been working there for 25 years. This move was a big change for me and one that has turned out be the turning point of my career. My family and I also realised that moving to Lahore to pursue my dream was a risk, but one that I had to take if I wanted to succeed.

Model Town Cricket Club

The first time I went for trials in Lahore at Model Town Cricket Club, I was really nervous as there were so many cricketers at the trials and I thought to myself, am I going to impress the coaches or will I just get lost amongst the other guys trying to attract the attention of the coaches? Model Town Cricket Club is a very famous club in Lahore and the likes of Azhar Ali, Usman Salahuddin and Imam-ul-Haq play there and it's not easy to play for such a high-profile club where competition for places is so tough. I went there for a couple of weeks and practised there and then got a chance to play a match for them. In my first match, I took 2 wickets in 4 overs and the coaching staff there were very pleased with my performance. Initially, I played some friendly matches but then I became a regular pick in the actual competition matches and in tournaments.

Sayid Paper Mills and Lahore Region Under-16 trials

While I was playing for Model Town Cricket Club in 2010, I went for trials for the Grade II team Sayid Paper Mills. I was 16 at the time and the coaching staff there were very impressed with me. One of the coaches suggested to me that I should attend Under-16 trials for Lahore region. So, whilst I was unsuccessful in the trials for Sayid Paper Mills, I was picked by Lahore Region Under-16s at their trials. I played 5 matches for Lahore Region Under-16s and took 9 wickets in the Pepsi PCB Cricket Stars Under-16s Tournament 2010/11.

2011 to 2013

These three seasons were a complete loss for me as I did not feature in any Under-19 or Grade II cricket and just concentrated on playing club cricket in Lahore. I went for Under-19 trials for various teams and departments but I wasn't successful and I was pretty down at that time and was worried about my future in cricket as wherever I turned, the door was being slammed on my face. Thankfully, I was still playing club cricket and that kept the flame burning as far as the passion for cricket was concerned.

2014 Lahore District Under 19 Trials

I went for trials for Lahore District Under-19s and there a former pace-bowler Saud Khan who was one of the coaches spotted me. The trials were at LCCA Ground in Lahore and I bowled really quick and well at those trials. I was selected for Lahore District Under-19s and played three matches for them in the Inter-District Under 19 Tournament 2014.

Lahore Region Under-19 trials

My name was then included in the trials for Under-19 Lahore Region and once again, I bowled well at the trials where I swung the ball and was finally selected by Lahore Region Under-19s. This was really important for me as this was my final year for qualification as an Under-19 player and my last chance at this level, but thankfully things turned out in my favour. I played a full season for Lahore Eagles Under-19s and I ended up as the one of the highest wicket-takers in those Inter-Region Under-19 tournaments, taking 42 wickets in 9 matches. Six of these matches were three-day fixtures and the other matches were 50-over fixtures.

Lahore Eagles

Having concluded my days as a Under-19 cricketer, the next step was to try and find a first-class team. With some very good statistics in my final season as an Under-19 cricketer, I was hopeful that I would get an opportunity in first-class cricket, but you can never be too sure. Thankfully, Lahore Eagles gave me a chance and I made my first-class debut for them in November 2014 against Karachi Zebras. I played two matches in my debut season, taking six wickets.

Pakistan Under-19s

In December 2014, I toured Kenya with Pakistan Under-19s. It was a short 10-day tour comprising of five 50-over matches. I played in three of the matches but I wasn't happy with my performance on that tour and only took two wickets.

2015 Brighto Paints in Grade II and Lahore Region

I came back from the tour of Kenya with Pakistan Under-19s and played for Brighto Paints in Grade II cricket, taking eight wickets in three matches. After that, I represented Lahore Blues in first-class cricket and took 28 wickets in 6 matches. During that season, I played against KRL in Hyderabad and bowled very well against them and their coach Jaffar Nazir and manager Rashid Iqbal were very impressed with my bowling.

Playing for KRL

In 2016, I once again played for Brighto Paints in Grade II cricket and it was at this time that I signed for KRL. It was good to sign for such a high-profile team like KRL, but I've been a bit disappointed with my overall performances for them so far. My aim has been to take 50-60 first-class wickets per season but that has not happened as yet. My intention was to also get noticed and picked for a Pakistan A tour, but that is still yet to happen.

Looking to increase my pace to the 140 to 145 KpH mark

At the moment, my pace is around the high 130s (KpH), but I am confident that I can bowl quicker than what I am at the moment and would like to take it to the 140-145 KpH mark. I'm going to work on a few things at the end of this domestic season as I feel I can improve as a bowler and increase my pace. I've already spoken to the coaches and trainers about a fitness plan for me to implement when the season finishes, and am also working on some technical aspects of my bowling.

National T20 Cup 2018

I feel that I have done pretty well on pitches that aren't too favourable for pace bowlers. I took three wickets in the first match and took a couple of wickets in the second match too, but I feel that I could have done better with the occasional over letting me down and going for runs.

Future aims

My aims are to add consistency to my bowling, increase my pace and get picked for Pakistan A and to earn a Pakistan Super League contract. This current season is really important for me as I want to work on my bowling and come back next season a better all-round bowler.

Thanks for arranging the interview Saj and admin.

Excellent prospect, looking forward to his development. Sounds like he is a hard worker who constantly pushes himself to the next stage.

Bowling well atm in the ongoing game...

2/23 today. Excellent stuff from him.

Talking about high profile clubs in Lahore and competition there reminds me my days. I was with various less fancy clubs in Lahore and then moved to P&T hoping to become a FC cricket and then beyond, but competition was really tough with mix of test and FC players in their first eleven. Model Town club was also a big one, even then, in 90s.

No problem

Ahmed is a good, humble lad. He's very eager to improve and become a better bowler. The basics are there, he just needs to work on a few things.

Saj does not he bowl with a better action? I mean smoother?

He has bowled brilliantly in the ongoing T20 cup. He can become another Hassan Ali for us. Another good thing about him is that he is averaging 19 in first class cricket but still isn't satisfied with his performance.
Should have been selected in PSL. I think teams still have to select 21st player for there squad, in that Multan should select him as he is from there.

That definitely comes across.

Any chance you can share his videos with PSL sides? IMO would be ideal for LQ. Hopefully he is picked as 21st player.

Sent his videos to Ali Khan Tareen......as Ahmed is from Vehari........so let's see.

We never, ever learn.

You cannot take English style seamers to Australia and South Africa. You need tall fast bowlers who can hit the deck hard and extract bounce from a good length.

Shaheen can be that but he's raw. Why is this guy not on the selector's radar ?

Pace bowling hasn't been the problem, we just haven't played a 4th to rest the other three. When you can't rest in-between spells, it's difficult to keep up the same intensity. Had Hasan played this match, SA do not score more than 300.

That is a myth, our bowlers weren't even hitting good speeds in their first spells. Did they start the match tired?

did we lose the first test match to the bowlers speeds? was the first innings of the second test because of the bowlers' speeds?
Both test matches were lost first and foremost to poor batting.

:danish

Where have I absolved the batting of their failure? The question was for bowling speeds and it would have been pretty dumb to bring in batting into a discussion regarding bowling speeds.

Abdullah Bhaee if there is an injury to any local player than the franchises can replace the injured player even now or during PSL. Right ?

Is Mohammad Wasim still involved with Multan Sultans ?

islamabad and zalmi are yet to announce there 21 player he might get a chance

Ridiculous he has not been selected. If the franchises are incapable of selecting on potential/doing research that is one thing, but when the guy is the stand out pacer in the NT20 Cup how on earth does he still miss out?

He's been treated unfairly in Central Punjab. This seniority culture is cancer. There's also no reason for someone like Naseem to get the nod over a proven domestic performer.

Fact: Central Punjab had Waqas Maqsood and Faheem Ashraf as their pace spearheads during the National T20, whilst benching one of the best bowlers of LAST YEAR'S National T20 in Ahmed Bashir.

Also fact: Central Punjab failed to restrict any of their National T20 opponents to below 150.

I think somehow there's a correlation.

True. I can understand Faheem playing at no 7 due to somewhat batting he can do but Waqas after quite a few poor outings post the first match should have been dropped to give way to Ahmed Bashir.

It's just about getting someone to noticed you, that's how things work here, that's why there should be age limit of 5 U25 and one U21 in the 2nd XI atleast

6 teams is a flop idea for Pakistan. Merit will never be insured, a lot of youngsters will miss out.

They need to increase the teams to 8 to 10

Around 140

That's decent if combined with accuracy and a good seam position. Definitely should be playing ahead of Waqas Maqsood or Faheem. Faheem being an allrounder (at least in LO cricket) is a big myth.

Bowled pretty well today 4/23 in 4 overs.

Rawalpindi, 13 October 2020:

After waiting for a long time for his turn to impress, fast bowler Ahmed Bashir did not let the opportunity go as his four-wicket haul spearheaded Central Punjab’s thumping nine-wicket win over Balochistan in the National T20 Cup for First XIs at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Monday night.

This was the 24-year-old’s second appearance for Central Punjab in the tournament, the first being against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in which he returned three for 32. He had to make way for Faheem Ashraf after the tournament moved to Rawalpindi.

He found another opportunity after the Central Punjab’s management dropped fast bowler Ehsan Adil. This time around, Ahmed bettered his previous performance as he returned four for 23.

He now seems certain to earn more appearances for his side as they strive to earn a semi-final berth. Central Punjab take on Southern Punjab (today) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (tomorrow) in their last two group matches.

Ahmed started his career after seeking inspiration from the stories he had heard about and from his grandfather, Bashir Haider, a former first-class cricketer who played 39 matches from 1960-1971.

Ahmed made an impression as a teenager when he appeared for Lahore U16 in the PCB-Pepsi Cricket Stars in October 2010. Ahmed took nine wickets in five matches in an event, which also featured future stars like Khushdil Shah, Zafar Gohar and Danish Aziz.

Ahmed Bashir: “My aim is to represent Pakistan and to be amongst the best bowlers in international cricket. I used to visit cricket grounds with my grandfather who told me stories about his playing days. I was born in Vehari but moved to Lahore to pursue my cricketing ambitions. My performances for Lahore at the U16 and U19 levels, earned me a place in Pakistan U19 team in 2014.

“Shoaib Akhtar and Dale Steyn are my bowling idols. I admired their aggressive approach, wicket-taking ability and was inspired by their performances.

“I wasn’t disappointed after missing out on the first five Central Punjab matches in the tournament; I worked hard at the gym and kept myself prepared since I wanted to grab the opportunity whenever it came my way.

“The pitch for the match last night suited my bowling style and I aimed at maintaining a tight line and length without giving batsmen the opportunity to score. I am very happy that my approach, backed by captain Babar Azam and the team management, paid off.

“I really enjoyed the wicket of Haris Sohail as he is a quality player. I was looking for a five-for after dismissing him but could not get there. Now I hope to get five wickets in a match soon.”

The 24-year-old has so far taken 112 wickets in 26 first-class matches at an impressive bowling average of 20.14 with five five-wicket hauls. In List A cricket, he has collected 41 wickets in 28 matches while his T20 career of 13 matches has earned him 22 wickets at 14.68 with an impressive economy rate of 6.97.

With his knack of taking wickets while restricting the batsmen from scoring freely, strong work ethics and determination, Ahmed is likely to go a long way in his career.

Good movement

I remember someone hyping this guy up for years. Has been bang average everytime I have seen him bowl.

There are better fast bowlers in Pakistan. Will be surprised if he ever gets a call up

Ahmed Bashir 2-46 today.

Highest wicket taker for a pace bowler in the one day competition.

Been expensive but VERY impressive.

Must be around 84-87 mph with swing both ways, reverse swing, yorkers, and a good bouncer!!!

GOOOOOD bowler.
