Full name Atif Jabbar

Date of Birth June 15, 1990, Sheikhupura, Punjab

Major teams Dera Murad Jamali Ibexes, Medicam Group, Sialkot Stallions, United Bank Limited

Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Right-arm medium-fast

Height 5 ft 11

Bowling speed 140+ kph

Developing interest in cricket

Like most children, I began playing cricket around my home in the village, Ratanpura where I was born. My father had no problem with me playing cricket but my brothers were against it as they were worried that I would not make anything much of myself if I didn’t give my full attention to studies. Thankfully, I did complete my education to the matriculation level.

Qaiser and Nayyer Abbas’s influence to get me playing Club Cricket

When I got a little older, we used to challenge other villages for cricket matches. It was during one of these matches that Pakistan cricketer Qaiser Abbas’s brother Nayyer Abbas spotted me and told me to come and play for their club, Muridke Gymkhana. They explained the idea of playing club cricket and asked me to come and practice there and I started playing with them in 2005. I am indebted to Qaiser for working on my skills and for taking me on to play in their club. To this day, I go back and play for the club with both Qaiser and Nayyer so my association with them is truly permanent and I continue to learn from Qaiser till today.

Playing Grade II and Sialkot Under-23s

I progressed to Grade 2 cricket and played for Medicam until April 2012. In that period, I also played for Sialkot Under-23s where I picked up twenty wickets in five matches which helped me in getting my First-class debut for UBL in late 2012.

First-Class debut with UBL and disappointment with SNGPL

Once again, club cricket had an important part in my career development. I was playing a game for Medicam when former Pakistan international and former captain of United Bank Limited, Shabbir Ahmed, spotted me and invited me to play for his First-class team.

I played my first game for UBL in November 2012 against Habib Bank Limited (HBL). This was my first game against a team which featured some big names of Pakistan cricket including Younis Khan, Imran Farhat, Asad Shafiq and Umar Gul but to tell you the truth, I wasn’t overawed by the occasion and I did enjoy bowling to Younis Khan especially as he was and still is Pakistan’s premier batsman. That is because I had already had experience of playing big games in my Under-23 days so I settled in well. I took three wickets on my debut which will always be something I will remember.

My stay at UBL started off well but unfortunately the results of the team were not that good. I played a total of three games for UBL and my season ended with them. The next season, UBL decided to disband the team and rebuild it, resulting in Shabbir Ahmed leaving the team. I too followed suit and was picked up by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

If I had any ideas of things improving, that notion went out of the window as SNGPL did not allow me more than four games in the season. The reason for that was simply that SNGPL had some prominent players and opportunities were limited for me. Regardless of the reason and maybe the management did not see any real utility in me, I stayed on the benches playing just four games in the whole season.

The 2016 season with National Bank of Pakistan

I joined NBP and I can say that this was the season which I believe has changed my life and helped me realise my true potential. I was third in the list of wicket takers with fifty wickets with a best performance of 7/74 which was incidentally against UBL. But, I suppose the one that gave me a smile was my performance against SNGPL when I took seven wickets in the game and helped my team to a five-wicket victory. I guess they must have seen me bowl and then thought about my worth to them. Yet I don’t believe I did anything very special in this season and really if you look at my Grade 2 or Under-23 records, you will note that I am no stranger to taking wickets.

Role model and style of bowling

I was impressed by only one Pakistan fast-bowler and that was Shoaib Akhtar, but if you look at my bowling, it has always been like Lasith Malinga’s action. However, it would be wrong to say that I have copied the Sri Lanka bowler's action as my natural action is slingy in nature. My favourite wicket taking delivery is the Yorker, especially in First-class games but I can bowl with more variations in the shorter formats of the game where there is a need for such deliveries.

Future Aspirations

Despite my success in the longer format, I am a great fan of the shorter formats of cricket, especially Twenty20. I am now looking forward to the National One-Day Cup which starts soon to show my worth in that format. I am twenty-six years old but I have the wickets to prove that I can do well at the top level and all I now need is to be part of some of the camps for probables to show everyone that I am a capable bowler. For the moment, my aim is to continue taking wickets and to improve fitness and hope that the selectors will start paying attention to me.

Atif Jabbar's 4 games for whole season and then he comes back to take wickets againsrt SNGPL :) Excellent work for him this season

Truly came into his own this season. Also looks like someone who would do well in the shorter formats so interested in seeing how he goes in the One-Day cup.

Desperately need new bowlers and need to get rid of Sohail, Rahat and Imran.

I heard this chap is nippy, we should only select bowlers if they are 140+, unless they are a maestro with the ball like Asif.

None of this 130kph crap like Rahat

His action needs work. Not ready yet. Best option is Ali Imran pasha right now.

I wonder why he didn't play the last 6 games in the One Day Cup after taking 2/9 in the first match. Perhaps injured - there was no other reason to omit him from the team, he's had a pretty strong season overall.

You've muddled the story a bit I think. Among the reasons for Rahat's selection was his pace. Could touch 140. This is Waqar's boy. And a perfect example for why one should never select merely on pace, as you suggest.

Imran on the other hand is a bit slower but averages 26 in Tests and has an FC record to suggest that he is as good as most other contenders. In other words, a perfect example of why 130kph need not be crap.

Even if it is not Asif.

I am agree with you but we should give chance to toppers of season like abbas &hamza otherwise why they are perfoming 8n domestic

He was in dream form and I expected him to be amongst top 3 wicket takers of this tournament as List A is his strongest format and even in his weakest format he finished with two tenfers.

I am disappointed that he missed the tournament. Hope if it's injury it isn't serious. Atleast NBP should have told the press why Atif did not play.

I agree but Imran has actually performed when given the chance so if the system is to work on merit as we both want then he should be given a run too.

Action needs some work, also not tall enough

His action is hybrid of Malinga & Fidel edwards. Height wise he is 5'10 5'11.

Question is that with 2 Ten wicket hauls in his last 2 FC matches due to his weapon pace can he have better Test figures than Malinga & Edwards ?

I ll take such a bowler inplace of Wahab if he can Average under 30. Wahab cannot move the ball except for reverse and he is expensive.

How fit is he? How quick are his 2nd and 3rd spells?

When I saw him play firstime in 2014 he was athletic and muscular and bowled few above 145kph.

In 2015 he was seen carrying a belly. Now he once again looks strong and fitter.

Taking 2 tenfers in back to back games give a strong hint that he is quite fit.

NCA needs to take his fitness test and if he meets international cricket fitness criteria plus impresses Arthur, Mudassir & Inzamam than he should be picked.

Atif Jabbar 4/40 and 7/74 against UBL.

Bowled 50 overs in the match.

Not overweight overall but does carry a belly.

Would take only 2 months to get rid of the belly in a healthy way.

Really would like to see some of these players in Pak colours asap.

I hope if he isn't injured than He is at NCA.

Needs to be under Mudassar's and Yasir's wings at NCA.

With 2 Tenfers in last two FC matches is he going to be surprise pick for the Test Squad ?

Please Rest Pacers who have Averaged above 28 in last 5 Tests.

If we do that then we will need completely new set of pace bowlers. I don't think even one of our pacers has that good of an average in the last 5 matches.

no he won't, he was injured during the camps so they haven't seen him properly.

I assume 1 or 2 will qualify. Else raise it to 30-32 may be.

The thing is that 2-3 Test Series are a decent run and remember more than 50 % of those matches were in conditions either good or very good for fast bowling so no excuses. Furthermore only performances should keep a player in team. So those who don't fit the bill should be dropped or rested. Such a foreign tour is also a great oppurtunity for rotation policy. I am sure you are aware of what CA, CSA, ECB, NZC & to a less degree BCCI do. Atleast we can throw one or two newcomers to check their depth and future potential.

Thank you for the update. Disappointing. I was backing him from the time he averaged 40 plus with the ball in FC Cricket because I saw something which seperated him from others. He isn't somebody who is extraordinary or next superstar but definitely needs a look in especially in Odi Cricket.

my (excellent) sources tell me the name at the forefront for selection next is Abbas. however, its Mickey who wants to stick with Rahat apparently because they have already invested so much in him.

so my guess is the test attack will be the same ttfs of wahab, amir and rahat which also means no rough for yasir.

I did mention atif Jabbar, and was told it was a useful reminder (he was almost forgotten about).

if there are any other truly exceptional match ready bowlers, please post up and I can guarantee I can get a word through to the people that matter. whether they agree or listen is completely a different issue of course.

incidentally, I did mention sadaf - and he was there at the emerging players trials, but failed to impress apparently. very military medium and has taken full advantage of a green Islamabad wicket and the bs domestic balls. I don't believe this since I can't understand how that alone explains how he has produced such a massively better performance in fc than anyone else in pakistan currently - but thats what they think.

Abbas' fitness didn't look too impressive from the pics during the camp.

I'd be quite surprised if Hasan Ali doesn't make it to the Test squad.

If it's Amir, Wahab, Sohail, Rahat and Imran again then I give up.

I didn't see the pics but what I was told was regarding his bowling skills rather than fitness which I suppose in tests are more relevant.

Sohail has been by far the most successful of our bowlers, and surprisingly it's not his fitness that is the problem... can't say more(!).

It seems the cupboard is utterly bare unfortunately. Apart from leg spinners or left arm spinners.

If they want to check a 31 years old 136-145 kph fast medium 6'3 bowler than they should call him in nets.

This is his record of last 107 Fc wickets.

His last 107 Fc wickets have come at Ave of 16 and SR of 28. - See more at:

He bowled the 2nd best spell of last FC season 7-20 which you can watch yourself. Unfortunately got injured after that.

He was the only bowler who troubled Under 19 worldcup highest scorer when he represented Pakistan. Bob woolmer rated him highly and wanted to take him for Aus Test tour but Selectors at that time felt he was too raw.

For Me Ali Imran is the best Right Arm Pacer in Pakistan at the moment (when fit) and he is only edged by Asif. Though Asif isn't in rhythm and gets unfit too but Asif was magical in two FC matches last season.

No young pacer in even Test team is near Ali Imran's level and Atif Jabbar Ehsan Adil Hasan Ali Sadaf hussain are a level below Ali Imran.

ok will look into it and try to make a statistical case.

I hope and pray that Wahab once again picks up his speed & performance in an ICC tournament and performs well.

God forbid if he doesn't than this man is the ready finished product to replace Wahab in the Odi team.

Is he still injured ? Or He is in UK playing league cricket ?

Should have been part of the camp. Deserved it.

Today showed what he is capable of when everyone from last 2 days is getting hit for 40 and 50 runs in 4 overs he only gave 28 , shows the quality

last year he was in top 3 wicjet takers in quaid e azam trophy got 50 odd wickets and he is treated so badly

Got injured at the time when he was nearing Pakistan A call with a fantastic 2016/2017 F.C. season.

Fit again and back in form with a fivefer.

He is hybrid of Fidel Edwards and Lasith Malinga and could be a good Odi bowler (when fully fit)
