The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have announced that opening batsman Tamim Iqbal will take over from Mashrafe Mortaza as ODI captain.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan delivered the news after a meeting of the board on Sunday 8 March.

"Masrafe Bin Mortaza has recently stepped down from the ODI captaincy after a fantastic tenure," Hassan said. "I firmly believe that the achievements in the one-day format would not have been possible without him leading the team. Now is the time for someone else to take over the reign and carry Bangladesh forward.

"We have selected Tamim as captain expecting him to lead the team long-term."

Tamim has previously captained the ODI side in three matches, during an injury lay-off for Mortaza during which Bangladesh toured Sri Lanka. He will be hoping to improve on the results of that series, which Bangladesh lost 3-0 with Tamim scoring 21 runs from his three innings.

Mortaza confirmed on Friday that he would stepping down from the role at the conclusion of the series against Zimbabwe, the final game of which was played the day after that announcement. Bangladesh swept the series 3-0 to take Mortaza to 50 wins as captain in the format.

Giving his thoughts ahead of taking up the job for the one-off ODI against Pakistan, Tamim was effusive in his praise of his predecessor and optimistic for the challenges ahead.

"This is a massive honour for me," he said in a press statement. "I thank the BCB for trusting me with this responsibility. I am aware that I have huge shoes to fill as Masrafe Bin Mortaza has been a true great for Bangladesh cricket and a model of inspiration as captain for me and all the cricketers.

"The journey that begins now will have its ups and downs. We all want the Bangladesh ODI Team to be successful and when we are victorious it is a celebration for the entire nation. I hope the Board, the fans and the media will support me through the tough moments as well as during the good times."

I am more interested to know, who is going to be the deputy. Tamim is like a short term appointment before Shakib returns, but next deputy will take charge for long term. Won’t mind Saifudfin for LO vice captaincy.

I think Mehidy (Miraz) can be the permanent captain. He captained the U-19 side before.

Alternatively, bring in Akbar Ali from the U-19 group and groom him. He can be a great captain.

For the first time the BCB has introduced separate contracts for red ball and white ball cricket and the initiative was praised widely in the cricketing fraternity.

Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] cricket operation chairman Akram Khan held the national selectors responsible for the Soumya Sarkar mishap. BCB following a board meeting on Sunday declared a list of 16 cricketers to be part of the new central contract but the name of the left-handed batsman, who is a regular in the national team, was not included in the contract.

For the first time the BCB has introduced separate contracts for red ball and white ball cricket and the initiative was praised widely in the cricketing fraternity. However, not including Soumya had come as a big surprise to a major part of the cricketing community.

Soumya was not part of the central contract in the previous term but was a regular member in the national fold playing 25 off the last 30 matches played by Bangladesh side across all formats. Only wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Mahmudullah played more matches than Soumya, 29 and 28 matches respectively.

Not being a part of the central contract doesn’t hamper financially much if a cricketer is regular part of the national team. However apart from the financial part, the central contract is an attraction to cricketers as that brings respect and confidence.

include him soon in our contract list for the white-ball,’’ said Akram to the media on Monday. BCB was yet to declare Soumya’s inclusion in the central contract when this report was filed on Monday evening.

Chief of the national selection Minhajul Abedin admitted to the mistake and said, “He will soon be included under white ball contract. We had to shortlist the players for different formats of the game and his name got omitted by mistake while making the lists.”

Eyebrows have also been raised over not including right-arm pacer Rubel Hossain under the contract. Rubel was part of the Test team in Bangladesh’s first Test against hosts Pakistan in February. He was later dropped from the format with intention of keeping his focus on limited-over cricket. Rubel however was not made part of the ODIs and T20Is against Zimbabwe recently.

“We are thinking him [Rubel] for white ball cricket. He is not yet out of consideration. But honestly he has not been performing well. Not being in the contract doesn’t mean it’s end of the road. If he can return to the team with performance, he will automatically get into contract for that part of the time,” informed Minhajul.

He used to be a really aggressive batsman but he has toned it down. He also lost a bit of form. We don't have a replacement for him currently.

He is not the best captaincy option, but he is a good short-term solution (just like Aussies made Tim Paine captain).

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has stepped down as the one-day international captain.

The left-handed batter made the announcement following a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan, cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus and other high-ups Thursday evening.

Tamim’s decision has come on the back of a lot of uncertainty regarding his availability as the cricketer is still recovering from a recurrent lower-back injury.

It has also been determined in the meeting that Tamim will not be available in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 as the timeline is too less for the cricketer to recover and gain match fitness.

If the recovery goes well, Tamim will return with the ODI home series against New Zealand in mid-September and also play the Cricket World Cup 2023.

Tamim last week travelled to England for treatment of the injury and took two injections in the lumbar as part of the pain relief management.

“I had a detailed discussion with our board president Nazmul bhai and cricket operations chairman Jalal bhai. I have decided to step down as the ODI captain. This is mainly because of my injury. Because of my injury I am not being able to determine my availability. Jalal bhai will explain more on that. I have informed the same to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and she has given her valuable advice to us,” said Tamim in the press meet, sitting alongside Nazmul and director Jalal.

Jalal confirmed Tamim’s unavailability in the Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Sri Lanka later this month.

“Tamim since taking the injections on July 28 has been put in two weeks’ rest. The first week was full rest which will end [Friday] and he can start light rehab from the second week. So, looking at the timeline we have decided that it will be too much of a rush for him to get ready for the Asia Cup. The team are scheduled to leave Dhaka on August 26. If everything goes according to plan, Tamim will return with the home series against New Zealand,” informed Jalal.

Nazmul informed that it was a surprise for them to know of Tamim’s decision to step down as skipper.
However, taking the situation into consideration, he believes the decision is the best for the team ahead of two major events in the Asia Cup and World Cup.

“We are surprised of his decision, to be honest. We will now have to find the captain quick who will carry us in the Asia Cup and World Cup. We were not prepared for this. We will have to sit and discuss this with the board soon. But I am not worried as to me everyone in the team is captain, let it be Shakib [al Hasan], Tamim or Mushfiqur [Rahim]. They are there to guide the team. The important thing now is for Tamim to recover and play well for Bangladesh in the World Cup,” said Nazmul to the media.

Tamim while speaking of his tenure as captain of the ODI side said he believes he has done a good job and thanked the team for the support he got in the dressing room and on the field.

Under Tamim, Bangladesh played 37 ODIs since 2019 and won 21 games, including a fine run of results in the World Cup Super League 2023 where they finishing third and qualified for the mega event well in advance.

“The journey was fantastic. Result will speak for itself. I have done a very good job as a skipper I believe. It would have been selfish of me to hold onto the captaincy at this point as I am not sure of the matches that I will be available for going ahead [due to the injury]. I always put my team ahead. Whenever I am in the XI, the captain will have my full support. I will do my best to support the team,” said Tamim.

“I think the aim is common [for the World Cup], which is to do really well whether I am captain or not. There is nothing new to say to the team. It will be wrong if I say I am not sad. At the end of the day people do take selfish decisions but when it comes to the team and country, you have to think of the team and country first. I thought of the team and country first rather than my own satisfaction. The Prime Minister understood the situation, told me to be in the field and wished us well,” he added.
