The remains of a teenage boy have been found in the lion enclosure of a Lahore zoo, a day after he went missing.

Officials said they are investigating how Muhammad Bilal, 17, made it over the fence and what caused his death.

But locals have blamed Mr Bilal's demise on staff incompetence, and earlier this week the zoo's offices were ransacked.

The state-back Lahore Safari, established in 1982, is Pakistan's largest and oldest animal park.

Chaudhry Shafqat, a director at the zoo, told the BBC that people from a nearby village visited the site on Tuesday night asking for help to look for the boy.

"We told them it was too late and could be dangerous to launch a search in the dark," said Mr Shafqat.

During a search on Wednesday morning, zoo employees found a blood-soaked skull, some bones and pieces of torn cloth which the relatives recognised as the missing boy's clothing.

Officials said relatives told them the boy had left home on Tuesday afternoon to cut grass, which was intended to be used for cattle fodder.

Mr Bilal's remains have been sent for tests to confirm the cause of death.

Pretty sad this - Zoos in Pakistan are understaffed and woefully manned

This is quite horrific news.

I saw a video where these idiots were taking a video sitting next to a lion and it attacks them.

To some extent people can also be foolish at times.

Very sad to read this. In the age of social media, the younger generation has lost all sense.

Its just fun to do these ‘daring’ things that make them standout.

Why would anyone with a sane mind even dare to enter a lion or tiger enclosure? The victim wasn't an adult, but certainly not a child either.

Sad news. Could've been avoided.

People need to follow the rules when they go to zoo or near animals. These are wild animals and you should be cautious.

Zoos are outdated. I popped into the Zoo earlier this year as I was staying at the hotel opposite, and while they have a magnificent collection of lions and tigers, those sort of animals aren't meant to be kept in such conditions. They were just pacing backwards and forwards in a confined space for lack of any other option.

Yeah just watching the Lion on youtube should be sufficient.

How tragic !

Don't know why would anyone even enter a wild animal's enclosure ?
