NEW DELHI: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Monday that it was the "best time" for India to hold talks with Pakistan as the neighbouring country's new Prime Minister, Imran Khan, is being touted as a "proxy" their army.

If initiated now, she said, the talks between the two neighbours at this time could prove "beneficial".

"If Imran (Khan) is a proxy of Pakistan's army then this is the best time to talk. When Imran Khan says he is ready to talk, to open corridors, then I think army is also on the same page...," Ms Mufti said at the 'Agenda Aaj Tak' event in Delhi.

She said the "best bargain" for India, vis-a-vis the Kashmir issue, was during the time when Pervez Musharraf was the President of Pakistan as during that time ceasefire was initiated at the border and the Muzaffarabad route was opened up.

"The talks could be beneficial now....why should we not talk?" she asked.

Ms Mufti also said her party will "join hands" with any political party that will support the "resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue."

"If we can join hands with the BJP, we can do so with anyone for resolution of the J&K issue," she said.

Ms Mufti said her Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) going with the BJP, during the last political regime in the state, was "suicidal" and that she was "disappointed" that this experiment to begin the political process in the state did not work.

Asked if she had any lessons to learn, Ms Mufti replied in the negative.

"They (the BJP) didn't teach me any lesson. I stood my ground...(in taking decisions). We experimented (through the PDP-BJP alliance) for the people of Kashmir, but that did not work," she said.

She said there was a huge difference between former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's regime and the current one under PM Narendra Modi.

"(Atal Bihari) Vajpayee was spontaneous and down to earth...he never looked back or over his shoulder. He was a statesman. Today's NDA is more focussed in winning elections," Ms Mufti claimed.

"Thank God, they have not given voting rights to cows," she said in an apparent dig on the BJP.

Rather poor choice of words as cows are sacred to Hindus

She makes a good point - the steaks are so high between India and Pakistan that both sides should put the beef between them aside and make more of an effort for lasting peace. Politicians should take stock of the situation.

As for voting rights for cows - please don't give Yogi Adityanath and his followers any ideas, this would be moo-sic to their ears.

She is as dumb a politician as one can get and there is no dreath of such poloticians in the valley. She was all praises to bjp as long as she was in govt. with them and the moment bjp withdrew their support to her party she has gone completely insane.Playing to the gallery.

This Cow thing again

problem are not the cows, but those hindus whose faith ends where their nose ends. your faith should not have any boundaries, others should draw their boundaries so that they don't step on your faith.

If India is a secular country, you cannot expect others to treat your sacred animal the same way you revere.

Keep religion within your 4 walls. Do not drag it to the streets and expect everyone to respect your sentiments.

If Hindus respect cows, they should not eat them or torture them. But do not expect non-hindus to do the same. Tomorrow if some other religion comes and says Chicken is like their uncle, would you ask all Hindus to stop eating Chicken? Where does this madness end?

Live and let live.

india is a hindu majority country. secularism or anything else only comes after that. the happiness of people is maximised if the majority is kept happy.

Its a Hindu majority country. But not a Hindu country. Everyone has the right to follow what they believe. But no one should bring their faith to the streets.

Happiness of Hindus should not be limited to Cow. This whole cow drama is one big ploy by the Government to hide its deficiencies and divert the attention of the people from real issues. People fall like flies for the same old ploy of diversion politics. Many innocents get killed. Nothing every comes out of it.

The sad part is, UP has so many pressing problems. But it seems the biggest problem for them seems to be the way cow is treated by Muslims.

Srinagar: In an apparent criticism of rising Hindutva in India under Narendra Modi rule, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has said cricket should be played in a sporting spirit and not treated as if it were a war.

According to Kashmir Media Service, when asked about her views on the defeat of India in Cricket World Cup at Ahmedabad on Sunday, she said, the then Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf attended India-Pakistan cricket matches in each other’s countries.

“When an Indian player played well, the Pakistani crowd appreciated it and the same was done by the Indian crowd for Pakistani players. That is how the game should be seen,” she added.

“Cricket is a sport and it should be played like one. It is not a war,” she added.

Mufti also hit out at the occupation regime of Jammu and Kashmir for the power crisis in the territory. She accused the administration of spending huge amounts on official functions and publicity, while the people are allegedly being made to suffer.

“The electricity fee is being hiked with each passing day. Every year, new electricity meters are being installed, which is the biggest scam, and someday we will talk about it. The situation of electricity is so bad that power comes on for minutes and remains shut for hours. This is the situation in our city, Srinagar. The situation is worse in villages and towns where there are no traces of electricity,” she added.

The PDP president said that despite the Modi government holding celebrations and functions every day and boasting about different things, there is a decrease in electricity.

Mehbooba Mufti accuses Indian govt of turning Kashmiris into militants

Kashmiri leader Mehbooba Mufti has accused the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning common people in the illegally occupied territory into militants.

“You talk to militants in the northeast, in Jammu Kashmir, you have turned common people into militants,” she said while addressing a gathering in the held region on Sunday.

On December 23, media reported that three Kashmiris were tortured to death while in Indian army custody. They were among the eight civilians arrested by the army for interrogation in the wake of an attack on two army vehicles in Poonch, according to locals.

Mehbooba criticised the government’s action to arrest so many people and raids conducted by different investigation agencies in the region.

She lamented the way the Modi-led government treated the people in such a way. Mehbooba, who is the head of the regional People’s Democratic Party, advised the government to follow Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who tried to calm the situation and showed a way for separatists to live peacefully in the country.

“Mufti Sb said people of Jammu and Kashmir need peace,” she said, “we will not surrender and will not raise the white flag.”

Mehbooba warned that the use of force would not be accepted.
