A tantalizing day five awaits at Trent Bridge as India need another 157 runs for victory while England will hunt to take the remaining 9 wickets.

With an overnight lead of 70 runs, India were in search of a breakthrough in the first hour. Mohammed Siraj provided just that with the wicket of Rory Burns who perished for 18 runs.

Immediately in the next over, Jasprit Bumrah too snared his first. The out-of-form Zak Crawley’s struggles in 2021 continued as he edged the ball to Rishabh Pant.

It was the third-wicket partnership of 89 runs between Joe Root and Dom Sibley that gave the hosts a lead. Root registered back-to-back fifties in the Test and his control over the innings suggested a big one was loading.

Sibley departed against Bumrah for a well-fought 28 that came in 133 balls. Then, Johnny Bairstow arrived at the crease to stitch a 42-run stand with Root of which he scored 30 runs. He fell against Siraj after he pulled a short one straight to Ravindra Jadeja at the square leg boundary.

Dan Lawrence joined Root for a quick-fire 25 off 32 balls but Shardul Thakur trapped him in front for his first wicket of the innings. In the second session, England added 116 runs to take their lead to 140 with Joe Root on the verge of his 21st hundred.

Thakur made an immediate impact after tea, with a peach of a delivery that dismissed the dangerous-looking Buttler. Sam Curran and Root stitched together a vital partnership of 37 runs as Root brought up a magnificent century. Soon after though, he had to depart as Bumrah found his rhythm, bringing an end to his excellent knock of 109.

Sam Curran's crucial knock of 32 would come to an end against Bumrah. Stuart Broad would perish in the next delivery itself as Bumrah celebrated his sixth five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Mohammad Shami would finish off the job dismissing Ollie Robinson as India were set a target of 209 for victory.

In reply, India got off to a solid start in testing conditions. Stuart Broad though, had the perfect start to his second spell, bowling a sensational delivery to get the wicket of KL Rahul for 26, who was looking in sublime form.

Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara would see through the remaining overs, setting up a nail-biting finale for day five, with India needing 157 more runs for victory.

Just like I posted on Day 1....one of those days where its hard to predict how it would play out.

Indians could come out and chase it down without much fuss. Least likely scenario tho.

Or we could collapse fast.

If it goes down to the wire, theres a strong chance England is prevailing.

Yesterday England were searching for wickets so they gave us some easy runs...today they will try to be more tighter and patient.

There was some up and down bounce in the pitch yesterday evening....hope that has settled down or Robinson will exploit that fully.

This is India's game to lose. Hope rain stays away.

I'll be optimistic of our chances only when the target is under 100 with at least 8 wickets remaining. Have been scarred by too many collapses in 4th innings while chasing modest scores in overseas conditions in the last few years.

Either the rain is going to give us an L denying us victory or our own batsmen are gonna give us an L like in the WTC final when we collapsed inside pretty much two sessions.

A lot will depend on how the pitch is today. Yesterday, the weather was the best in this whole test match and pitch was good for batting too. If it becomes overcast today, then it can be tricky but if it is a bright day like yesterday, we should do better.

I think ultimately we will win. Pujara will score today as he is playing for his position and he is showing the same aggression in his eyes which he showed in 200 ball 70 inning he scored vs Australia on Day 5.

Both the openers have been compact and this looks like the best opening pair and lower middle order we had in long time for England conditions.

A strong batting lineup like India's should be able to get 157 runs with 9 wickets in hand.

Have some confidence just 150 more runs to go. Only need 50 overs to bat and achieve that.

Indian fans start wrist slitting as soon as the target goes higher than 100.

The target is just 200 not 400.

Step 1 - Say target is easy. India will surely win.

Step 2 - If India fails, mock them for not even chasing it.

Bohot purana tactic hai. :))

I am just kidding.

All Pujara needs to do is tie one end up. If he does that, other batsmen will get the runs.

Capetown 2018- Target 208, Lost by 72 runs.
Edgabaston 2018- Target 194, Lost by 32 runs.

This is a better batting pitch than both in my opinion and we have better start too. Hope for the best.

England will escape with a draw today, it's a shame as India deserve to win.

Swings and roundabouts though, India last series win in England in 2007 came off the back of a fortunate escape at Lord's when the last session was abandoned due to rain with India 9 down.

England was lucky to play in dry condtions rather than cloudy thats where they got runs yestrday at 3:5 per over .

England got saved by weather. They should have kept one extra day for each test match keeping the weather in mind.

Rohit and Pant only needs 20 overs to chase this down, all the IPL practice will come in handy. LESSSGO Mumbai Indians

A strong batting lineup like India's should be able to get 157 runs with 9 wickets in hand.

A strong fearsome bowling attack with the modern day Fred Trueman could not stop England from chasing 277 in the 4th innings so theres a good chance we could lose considering our middle order. :)

How? Not a single ball has been bowled today. I remember fans said the same thing after day 4 of WTC final against New Zealand. We all know how it ended. Currently India is slightly ahead and have a 55% chances of winning this match. Things can change pretty quickly if we lose 2 quick wickets. :inti

England captain Joe Root and head coach Chris Silverwood take their turn to check on progress with the umpires and groundstaff.
No brollies or hoods up, but it is definitely still spitting. They're not going to start in this.

Bad luck for India.

Even if we get a last solitary session; India should move up the order likes of Pant, Jadeja and Shardul to force a win. 40 overs is all India need to chase what remains!

We will have an early lunch. One hour till it stops and then 40 min lunch.

Met office issued yellow warning here, which means heavy thunderstorms, Continuous heavy rains today. Even if we have some play, it would be tougher for the Indian batsmen.

India only needs two sessions to chase this. 98 overs are not needed to score 155 runs.

What do you guys think of Robinson? Haven't seen him bowl yet, is he anywhere close to Woakes?

hope literally paani na phir jaaye, luckily have the olympics closing to watch...but yeah...what a downer....so far...can we get at least 1.5 sessions...

This match is done. It's going to be a washout.

The players might as well leave for their hotels.

Remember you concurred with me yesterday saying that 'Exactly...India can chase anything around 200 runs'

India is now chasing 209 runs and already posted 50 runs on the board. Not sure why you are not looking confident anymore unless you were trolling yesterday? :srini

Only rain can save England...otherwise India winning this game easily :inti

Lol now our Indian brothers can share our pain. Rain bas been screwing us badly in the last two tours. So much wait and then you see match delayed due to rain.

TBF India would be really tested by Anderson and Broad in these conditions but then again I don't think they will get any better chance to win than this. Rain delay has made equation tough for India.

Rain will stop at 4pm local time. Think we will get some play in final session

Man England is one of the worst places to play cricket at. It's either tooo chilly or too rainy.

It's still gloomy and the weather is expected to clear around 16:00 local.

From Sky

Movement at Trent Bridge as the umpires have a look at conditions. Maybe we will get some play after all.

The shorter the match is, the more beneficial it is for India.

Reason is the probability of getting the remaining 9 wickets decreases with the overs left decreasing. And that would make the Indian team adopt a more offensive approach which will lead England to have defensive fields.

All this of course matters only if play resumes. But even if only 20 overs are left, India should approach this as a T20 match and Rohit should go to Mumbai Indians mode. Curran brother will go into CSK mode and we can see a proper IPL El Clasico at the Trent Bridge.

Is there any chance of having any play today? Just wondering if it's worth to stay awake or go to bed !! it will surely be exciting even if 30 overs is possible

India is being saved by rain here it seems.

Or else i dont see them chasing 200. Their highest chase here has been what, 170ish?

After 4 there will be no rain according to forecast so surely can get 25-30 overs .

Cricket should be banned in UK. Its terrorism too. why not they should arrange their home tours in abroad like UAE?

No chance. Rain is back. Our Kaptaan is Pannauti. Whenever we are in winning position, it rains and when in losing position, no rain happens.

Inspection delayed as it has started raining again. Covers back on at Trent Bridge.

There is now rain predicted 4PM onwards. Don’t think there will be any play.

Game of cricket is more a game of luck than test of talent when it's played in England.

Agreed completely. If it is overcast, bowlers will take wickets and if it is bright and sunny, batsman will score. It is all about luck when and at what time you are coming to bat and when you are coming to bowl.

Way to miss the point. :facepalm There is a reason I said India have a 55% chance of winning but things can change quickly after 2 early wickets. Look at the weather now. For a minute, we were on the same planet yesterday. :inti

Indian fans who knew indian batting would collapse chasing this and said so yesterday are ruing the rain now lol.
England were favourites here with that indian middle oder and tail.
A shortened day is Indias best chance as it takes an england victory out of the picture.

India has been saved rain here.India ain't gonna chase 200 they have never done that in England

It is apparently hammering down at Trent Bridge right now.

Yeah, I hope against hope that BCCI doesn't organize more than 2 test series in England in future.

This place doesn't deserve 5 test series.
