We have tried many different formats in the Cricket world cup and although none of the formats were perfect but I strongly believe that round robin format used in 1992 and 2019 is the best format and quarter final format used in 1996, 2011 and 2015 was the worst format by far.
Although I can live with other formats such as Super six and Super eight but I hate quarter final format.
Up until 2015, there were eight good teams who had a realistic chance of qualifying to quarter finals so why on earth we played around 40 group matches when we all knew fully well the names of eight teams going to qualify.
The problems with Quarter final format was as follows.
1. The group stage was long and boring and there was no value to these matches as winning or losing these games were pointless.
2. Majority of the teams had almost all qualified to quarter finals by mid stage of group matches further reducing the value of these matches.
3. It was such a shame that we all waited four years to the world cup and it was limited to 4 quarter finals , 2 semi final and 1 final. A grand total of 7 matches and rest of the games were completely useless.
Just look back to 2011 and 2015 world cup and tell me how many of us remember what happened at group stage of these world cups. Not many will remember it as it was full of useless matches which did not hold any importance.
Now look at 2019 world cup. This is great as all the matches are important as only four will get through to knock out stage so all the matches hold value and this brings excitement and tension to all the matches.
