For some reason BGT seems to have a bigger ring to it as opposed to this one?

Will this trophy gain the significance that BGT has or Tests against England are a sideshow for India/England?

Press release - 19 June 2025

New Trophy to Honour Anderson and Tendulkar in England–India Test Series

The England Men’s and India Men’s Test teams will honour Sir James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar with a new trophy dedicated to their remarkable achievements in Test cricket. The next edition of this great rivalry takes place this summer, with the Rothesay five-match Test series getting underway at Headingley on Friday 20 June.

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, a joint initiative between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will now represent all future Test series between England and India. Previously, the series in England was played for the Pataudi Trophy and the series in India for the Anthony De Mello Trophy.

The Pataudi family will continue to be honoured, with a newly commissioned Pataudi Medal to be presented to the winning captain of each England–India Test series.

The trophy features imagery of Anderson and Tendulkar in action, along with their engraved signatures– a fitting tribute to two of the game’s most iconic figures.

Both Anderson and Tendulkar are widely regarded as all-time greats. They are the most-capped players in the history of Test cricket: Tendulkar played 200 matches, and Anderson 188.

Anderson, considered one of the finest exponents of swing bowling, took 704 Test wickets, the most by a fast bowler in the format. The Lancashire seamer ranks third on the all-time list, behind only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

Tendulkar, one of the most complete batters to have graced the game, remains the highest run-scorer in Test history with 15,921 runs. He made his debut at the age of 16 and went on to enjoy a distinguished 24-year international career, during which he played a pivotal role in India’s success against every other Test-playing nation.

Sir James Anderson, said:

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to have this iconic series named after Sachin and myself. The rivalry between our two nations has always been something special, full of history, intensity and unforgettable moments.

“To be recognised in this way is a real honour. I’m looking forward to seeing the next chapter unfold in England this summer. It promises to be compelling, competitive cricket - exactly what you’d expect from two great sides. This is elite sport at its finest.”

Sachin Tendulkar, said:

“For me, Test cricket embodies life – you give your best, and if things go wrong, it gives you another day to regroup, think, unlearn, and bounce back. It is the highest form of the game that teaches you endurance, discipline and adaptability, against all odds. I owe my foundation to Test cricket, as it has seen me grow from disappointments to triumphs, from aspirations to fulfilment.

"India and England have played a big role in shaping Test cricket in a way that it remains an evolving inspiration for subsequent generations. And now, as I share this recognition with my on-field challenger and an off-field gentleman James, I hope that the world celebrates the essence of Test cricket even more - allowing it to traverse boundaries yet untrodden.”

Richard Thompson, Chair, ECB, said:

"This new trophy is a brilliant way to honour two absolute legends of the game. Jimmy and Sachin have given cricket fans around the world so many unforgettable moments, and it is fitting that their names will now be part of every men’s Test series between England and India. I’ve had the privilege of watching both men produce world-class performances over the years, while they are both true ambassadors of the game off the pitch. This trophy is a celebration of their incredible careers and the extraordinary impact they have had on the game, reflecting the deep respect between our two cricketing nations.

“The Pataudi family also has a hugely important place in the cricketing connections between our countries, and I'm pleased that we will continue to honour their legacy through the awarding of the Pataudi Medal that will be provided to the winning captain.

“I can’t wait to see the first series played for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy to get underway in a few days’ time.”

Devajit Saikia, Honorary Secretary, BCCI, said:

“India and England have always shared a riveting cricketing rivalry. It's a matter of immense pride that the Test series between these two nations will be named after two of their most prolific cricketing names - Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.

“The two lit up the game with their brilliant performances over the course of their outstanding cricketing careers, which have inspired millions across the globe.

“We are sure that a Trophy named after the two icons will be another significant feather in their cap and will add a significant chapter in the Test series between India and England."

Roger Binny, President, BCCI, said:

"This is a truly momentous occasion for cricket. To rename the prestigious Test series between India and England after two absolute titans of the game, Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, is a fitting tribute to their unparalleled contributions.

“The ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy' will not only celebrate their individual legacies but also serve as a permanent reminder of the fierce yet respectful rivalry that has defined India-England Test cricket for decades.

“We at the BCCI are incredibly proud to be a part of this historic decision, and we believe it will add another layer of prestige and excitement to future encounters between these two great cricketing nations."

Anderson set the standard in his Test career against India. In 39 matches, he took 149 wickets at an average of 25.47, including six five-wicket hauls.

In the 32 Tests he played against England, Tendulkar amassed 2,535 runs at an average of 51.73, with a highest score of 193 at Headingley in 2002, the home of Yorkshire, the county he represented as their first overseas player in 1992.

Alongside their illustrious careers on the field, Anderson was awarded a knighthood for services to cricket in 2024, while Tendulkar received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2014.

England love to play Tests at home but the craze for such fancy trophies is more in India...I can bet that this trophy would become a big deal for them in coming years... especially in England

I expect England to win it more often.

India haven't won any Test series in England since 2007. As a matter of fact, they have only won 3 Test series in England since 1947.
That's honestly insane. I didnt know this

Lol, I’m just enhancing your knowledge, that Lanka has achieved way more in tests, also the first and only South Asian countey to win a test series in SA
No need, I am more knowledgeable then anyone here. Appreciate your insight though.

Ind vs England Since 2000 (test series results)
India -6
England - 5
Draw -3

I expect India to win it more because the recent history suggests that.

India stands clear of England in test cricket this millennium.

They should have named it something more compact and exciting. This one doesn't roll off the tongue easily.

Boring name.

I believe Pakistan hasn’t won a Test series in England since the 1980’s…

Should have named it after two cricketers of same era or same role. Cook-Tendulkar, Broad-Zaheer. Ashwin-Swann, Root-Kohli would have sounded better. Anderson-Tendulkar trophy is such a big name :p

Agree. Name doesn't sound catchy. It sounds long actually.

They could've named it Anderson-Sachin trophy probably. :inti

Name is not that catchy tbh but yeah, they both are the greats of the game so they must be recognized like this.

Much easier to draw when you play 2 match series instead of 5 match series
Last time when they won series in eng(2014), lanka drawn first match and won second match there by series. We too did the same in 14 and 21.but we are playing 5 test series to get away with 1 or 2 blips or lucky chances.

Such cringe names that they enforce.

not this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy? Short form would be ATT?

I get it, you want to make these trophies with some historical significance and give some proper importance to the Test series. But give it a proper name

Why is name of two cricket legends not a proper name for a test series? Should they be naming them after dictators like Gadaffi?

You dont need to name them after cricketers.

For example its called Ashes, not Bradman Hobbs trophy or BH.

The British and Indians share a hostile past. They could have related it to independence. It would historically be more feasible and you could have come up with a better name.

Tendulkar and Anderson dont fit well.

TAT trophy or ATT sounds lame. Border Gavaskar has a Catchy name but not all names are meant to be Catchy.

I get what their trying to do, both Anderson and Sachin are the symbolisers of longetivity but honestly it feels forced.

Furthermore I dont believe this trophy was necessary and could have just been a 5 match series between 2 countries.

I suppose it's one among 3 Test series that's actually keeping the format relevant from a commercial standpoint .

5 Tests for this and BGT is overkill and I expect both to come down to 4 Tests a series.

I keep the format relevant. It was me who turned off the lights during BGT.

You didn't reply. What is wrong with naming a trophy after two legends of the game?
I did reply.

Tendulkar was Anderson’s bunny. The series should have been named after two cricketers who had competitive rivalry.

Cook-Dhoni trophy?

What name do you propose?
A garbage Test cricketer like Dhoni doesn’t deserve his name on a trophy.

Personally I don’t feel there was any need to change the name. IAK Pataudi was the only cricketer in history to play Test cricket for both England and India. Don’t fix what is not broke.

You only started playing 5 test match series in England since 2014 :kp

Ask anyone of a certain age on here or irl in the 80's and 90's Pakistan used to obliterate England, but I guess you guys only see things with rose tinted glasses

@MenInG

Tendulkar (200 Tests) and Anderson (188 Tests) sit at the very top of the ladder when it comes to Test matches played. Two absolute giants of test cricket.

At a time when the dominance of T20 leagues feels almost inevitable, this joint move by the BCCI and ECB seems like a deliberate and thoughtful effort to revive pride in Test cricket. Naming two of the most experienced and universally respected players as ambassadors for this iconic five-Test series is symbolic and smart cricket diplomacy and brilliant marketing.

Associating Sachin Tendulkar, who is revered across the cricketing world, lends immediate gravitas and global appeal. He transcends boundaries being a genuinely loved and admired legend whose presence elevates the stature of any cricketing event. Sachin's photograph on social media and print media during this test series will bring immediate attention of many people.

James Anderson, with 700+ Test wickets a feat that may never be surpassed by another fast bowler brings authenticity and legacy. He’s a modern great who has remained consistently brilliant across two decades. Like Tendulkar, he is clean, dignified, and respected everywhere, a true cricketing royalty.

This move isn’t about creating a flashy, catchy title.
It’s about invoking something that feels timeless, aspirational, and deeply rooted in cricket’s heritage — and they’ve absolutely nailed it and dare i say ECB must have made a few boards envious by proudly walking away securing Sachin's brand association with their test series. I think a few other boards would have wanted that.

I also deeply appreciate that Sachin respectfully requested the BCCI to ensure the legacy of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi remains a part of this series. As a result, we now have the newly introduced Pataudi Medal of Excellence — to be awarded to the winning captain. It’s a fitting tribute to Tiger Pataudi, who remains one of India’s most iconic and inspiring Test leaders.

It would have been nice if this was named Tendulkar Ian(Bothom) Trophy Series. We could get a catchy short name

Pakistanis as always with the most random excuses to hate on something related to India.

Why is there a need to give abbreviations like ATT or whatever to this trophy?

The series is named after a GOAT batsman and a Good bowler who averaged 27( and 30+ away from home), no reason to give it an abbreviation.

Do we give these short names to Ind vs Sa, Mandela Gandhi Trophy? MGT

Its always an idiot who doesn’t know how to calculate averages spooling threads, @Major also joined in.

What did i do 😭😭😭😭😭😭. I have nothing to do with nonsense. Blame your own board for creating TAT or ATT.

Sachin and Jimmy are not from the same era. Sachin debuted in 80's. Jimmy in 2007.

This should have been Kohli-Jimmy series from here on.

chalo, anyway who says AYEE TEE TEE, you go and correct him to say ANDERSON TENDULKAR TROPHY.

Oh man, AYEE TEE TEE with the accent is gonna sound funny. The trophy just loses its value there

For posters reading this, just look at the logic these people are using, Anderson Tendulkar trophy shouldn’t exist because its ATT.

Chappel Hadlee is CHT, why is it still there

Tendulkar was Anderson's bunny

idk who thought this was the right thing to do lmao

also Anderson is a new millennium cricket, Tendulkar debuted in 1989

Significance is twofold.

1. Tendulkar is Jimmy's bunny.
2. England first then India.

Colonial masters subtly reminding Indians on who's the boss.
