Mickey Arthur after Day 2 of the Gabba Test:

"You can look at lengths, bad balls, field positions that didn't threaten enough... Pakistan almost sat on the back foot when you've got to make things happen in Australia. I'm not sure that Pakistan bowled particularly badly, they got just one wicket but I think it goes back to the 1st innings yesterday"

"When you win the toss and bat first on a good wicket at the Gabba, if you get to 300 yesterday and then push on to 400 which they should do on a wicket like that, they can start dictating terms and dominating. That's when scoreboard pressure creeps in. They never did that. The batting unit didn't give the bowling unit a real opportunity"

"The bowling unit is very inexperienced. Imran Khan last played a Test match 3 years ago and there we were worried about his ability to come back and bowl long spells. He's gone away and done well in domestics, but that's your experienced seam bowler. You then have two young bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi is very new to Test cricket and then you have a 16-year-old, it's a very inexperienced seam attack. Yasir Shah had to bowl a lot of overs, he was very good. Naseem Shah showed us a little bit, Shaheen Shah Afridi showed us a little bit at times, Imran Khan was disappointing"

"The Australian openers took a lot of singles off good deliveries, that puts the bowler off his line and length and makes him feel like he has to make something happen, that leads to half volleys and long hops and that's what the Australian openers did"

"If Naseem Shah had been called earlier for no-balls... I hate it when bowlers push the line, you prepare for it and you know the rules, you've got to keep your foot behind the line. The amount of times we saw from side-on that he had overstepped, that was too many, it's the discipline, the 1%ers that you've got to take care of and make sure you're on the money. He's not the first, he won't be the last. But as a coach, it's a coach killer, it's a discipline you can control and you've got to get it 100% right"

"Yasir got 1/101, I thought he was better than that. He stopped the game at points and gave some control, he gets better as games go on. But he needs big first innings scores to win you games"

"Pakistan have got to get better and that will continue to be worked on with fielding etc, I know Grant Bradburn works hard on them with skills, catching, throwing, work in progress and that reflects down the system for Pakistan. A lot of the time, fielding isn't taken seriously and that's something we tried to bring in. You can't play international cricket if you can't field. That's got to start at grassroots level"

"Naseem Shah has raw potential, now it's about how you groom that into something incredibly good. He has the make-up, the psyche, the build, the attitude as we saw in his stare offs with Warner. We shouldn't get too carried away just yet, though, it'll be a long journey for him but he has everything you want in a quick bowler, he's athletic and he's got pace and with pace you've got something special. You've got the raw diamond, you've got to chip it off and polish it a bit and there's something special there"

"The future looks bright for Pakistani fast-bowling and that's the exciting thing. I think we're starting to see young batsmen as well and if they can be groomed a bit, there's the makings of a good side"

"I liked to go with 5 bowlers in a lineup, that's the attacking way to play and that's how you win Test matches. With 4 bowlers and if 2 of them are young and inexperienced, it's a tough ask of the bowling unit"

"Pakistan have got to come in and toil away, they have to hit areas and build pressure and take intensity out onto the field. If your intensity goes down, it's not a light switch, you can't switch it on and off. It it drops, you'll be caught behind the 8-ball. They have 2 chances, come out tomorrow and give it a try and keep themselves in the game or they can sit back and wait for the declaration. If the intensity is down, they'll take that into the batting and struggle there as well. There have to set themselves realistic goals and try somehow to save this Test match"

Why do failed coaches sound like uber tactician and strategic masterminds when on TV?

To be honest even if the batters put 360 runs, the bowling would still have been toothless. We should have played a 5th bowler.

He should thank Fakhar Zaman for everything he has got now. He has been extracting mileage from that for too long now. As a tactician he is an utter failure.

You mean Mickey should be thanking Jasprit Bumrah for that no-ball?

Pretty much, this was at least a 400 run pitch. If we got 400 in the first innings this game could've been a draw.

In a Test match against one of the best bowling line ups in the world, two of our best batsmen got out playing ridiculous shots (Babar + Haris). If they would've bide their time and waited around like Shan and Azhar did at the start, we could've gotten closer to 400.

Wouldn't have guaranteed a win by any means especially with how the Aussies are batting. But would've definitely increased our chances of forcing a draw.
