According to me ganguly and tendulkar are world's best opening pair ever..

Team : India
Innings : 176 (136 times opening)
Total runs : 6609
Average : 49.32/innings when they open together.
Century stands : 26 times over 100 and 29 times over 50 runs for the first wicket...

Man of the match : 56 awards to Sachin Tendulkar (the most) and 31 for Sourav Ganguly (3rd most)....

Highest : 258 (vs Kenya), 252 (vs SL), 244 (vs Namibia), 197 (vs Zimbabwe), 193 (vs South Africa), 175 (vs Australia).. thrice these two have won the match without being separated!

Hayden and Gilchrist partnership would up there too.

Greenidge and Haynes, never saw them but I heard they were a great opening pair.

If I remember correctly,Nasir-Hafeez combo was beastly as well. They averaged something around 50 as well, with a small sample, though.

Greenidge and Haynes for me in ODIS. The Gilly and Haydos partnership was pretty brutal.

Sachin-Ganguly
Hayden-Gilchrist
Sachin-sehwag

Top 3

For a shortwhile Imran Farhat and Yasir Hameed were a very good pair

They had 4 consecutive 100+ partnerships

if its a flat track then nobody is better than Indian openers.

Gilly - Hayden

Haynes - Greenidge

Sachin - Saurav

Gilly - M Waugh

Sachin - Sehwag

Gilly-Hayden followed by SRT and Ganguly.

If Gilly-Haydos stayed together for 10-15 overs you almost knew the game was gone.

Yes, the other reason is also that Haydos and Gilly used to do it often at the big stage, look at the World Cups, Champions Trophy, man they used to take you to the cleaners!

Gilchrist-Hayden
Sachin-Ganguly
Greenidge-Haynes
Sachin-Sehwag
.....
crap

Would be interesting to see the S/rs of these 2 pairs, Ganguly-Tendulkar and Gilly-Hayden.

Just the sight of Gilly / Hayden coming out to open the batting put fear in teams. Quite often they took the game away in the first 10 overs - and if they got out, the rest of the batting was almost as destructive in those days. I remember always feeling annoyed when Clarke came in as he would often slow the run rate down and I wanted to see the likes of Andrew symonds bat!

My how times have changed! We no longer have a strong batting line up and I usually breath a sigh of relief when Clarke comes in now , hoping he will be stable and steady the ship.

:)) Yeah, Symmo was a beast. Clarke and Martyn seemed a little out place in such a destructive batting order.

Sachin and Ganguly, but would have LOVED to see Sachin partnering :anwar during the 90s.

From partberships I've actually seen, has to go with the consensus - Sachin and Ganguly.

A toss between Hayden and Gilchrist and Tendulkar and Ganguly.

Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail were decent too.

Haynes-Greenidge
Sachin-Ganguly
Hayden-Gilly

That's my order...it is backed up by their average, with number of games played over 100.

Was just thinking about this recently. Amla and de Kock, Rohit and Dhawan have done very well in recent times though the former haven't done much in ICC Trophies.

Agree.

Thats what I thought too.

Anwar and Sohail were good too.

In my time of watching cricket it's definitely Sachin and Sehwag, that was such a dangerous opening pair even though Sachin wasn't as aggressive as he was compared to the 90's.

No one can beat Hayden and Gilly. The way they dominated was just too good.

India has also got some superb opening pairs: Ganguly-Tendulkar, Tendulkar-Sehwag.
I used to like Smith-Gibbs a lot also.
