I made a thread a while ago regarding the concept of national pride and what pride actually constitutes. It was a relatively successful thread so I was inspired to pose a different question.
What do you guys think about the concept of nationality and citizenship? I've always wondered what it's like for someone of Pakistani origin to be born in a foreign country. Do foreign-born Pakistanis feel confused in regards to their identity as technically they are born into a "pakistani-household" but might adopt a western lifestyle of sorts? Are you guys faced with situations of divided loyalty where you don't know which nation to side with? Who do you side with in a cricket match? Is it the country of birth or the country of origin?
My own take on this topic might be a bit cynical. I firmly believe that the colour of your skin does in many ways determine who you are. All this talk of attaining citizenships and passports does little to change one's identity and the way others perceive who you are to begin with. I feel that all of us have a duty to serve our country of origin and play our part in it's progress. I've come across many people in different parts of the world that I've lived/visited where many desis are just not in touch with their own culture and values which I struggle to understand. Being deeply integrated within a specific society is one thing, but not developing connections with your roots and hertitage is something that I think is detrimental to one's own self. It gives you perspective of the world around you, and makes you appreciate the inherent differences between the natives of the land you grew up with and your own unique roots.
