The consistent mediocrity in Pakistan cricket is due to the lack of ruthlessness in selection

India to me is a perfect example. Even though the likes of Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Zaheer Khan were instrumental in India's ODI WC win in 2011, the Indian selectors did not waste more than one or two series before deciding to axe these players and moving on to the next generation. Someone like Ravindra Jadeja was dropped from India's ODI and T-20 team because Kohli wanted 2 attacking spinners and this prompted Jadeja to work harder and develop his batting to get back into the team again.

Again look at Australia. They lost a home series against South Africa in 2016 and immediately plenty of players were sacked, dropped and replaced by other players. Mitchel Starc did not perform against India in the test series and lost his test place to other pacers. Members of the invincible Australian team of 1998 to 2007 i.e. Gillespie, Martyn, Kasprowicz who were instrumental in Australia's rise to the top at the time had a poor 2005 Ashes series but were immediately axed and dropped without the selectors and team management getting overtly sentimental over their past contributions.

Even England decided to do away with Ian Bell, Johnathan Trott, Matt Prior and other players the moment they lost form.

In Pakistan unfortunately our selectors have an unfortunate habit of sticking with mediocrity and not holding players to account. Look at the likes of Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, still being played again and again, series after series inspite of letting the team down again and again just because they have played 60-70 test matches. Everyone harps on about Misbah being Pakistan's most successful captain but no one talks about the numerous losses we have had under him, the drop in our ODI rankings, the fact that the team made no progress under him at all during his tenure from 2010 to 2017.

We see the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Fahim Ashraf, Mohd Amir, Imad Wasim being persisted with in the shorter format even though these players have regressed and made no improvements in their skill levels, overall games and have the birth right to be the first confirmed selections on the playing 11 regardless of form, fitness.

You can't look to establish a ruthless performance culture in the team without holding players accountable for team performances and giving the players on the bench a chance.
