Shakeel Sheikh is a very interesting character. He is what you say a very flawed administrator that has valid reasons for being able to return to PCB, but at the same time has been involved in very wrong practices.
Here is a basic overview of Shakeel Sheikh that I can give you guys based on the stuff that I remember.
The Good
Before Shakeel Sheikh came, Islamabad cricket was nonexistent. Remember, Pindi cricket is older than Islamabad cricket, because Pindi was an old city, it had cricket clubs and few cricket grounds. Rawalpindi had its own cricketers that would run the show as they grew old.
Yet in the 2000s when Shakeel Sheikh came in, out of nowhere this guy would make cricket grounds. In every corner of Islamabad there is a cricket ground today and much of the credit which i have heard goes to Shakeel Sheikh because he got those grounds made. Not only that, but Mr. Shakeel made sure that each of these grounds were sponsored by companies. Jazz and other companies sponsored these grounds.
The benefit of sponsor? They took care of the facilities, like rollers, pitch formation and ground care. If I remember correctly, we were never required to pay a ground fee in Islamabad, only ball money used to be paid in club cricket in Islamabad (correct me if i am wrong)
Hs grounds even had white boards and even chairs with a shed.
Meanwhile, over in Rawalpindi, there were no grounds. The few we had, there was no grass on it. I remember playing on a railway ground which had no grass just red sand on which clubs used to have their games. I used to represent Gul Cricket Club, which was one of the oldest clubs, and they didn't even own a roller for a pitch. Thats how bad Pindi cricket was.
Shakeel Sheikh had attracted a lot of cricketers which result in many club cricketers getting Islamabad address and then playing club cricket from there.
The bad
Now for all the good he did, he has also done his fair share of bad acts.
My father has worked with media a lot, and he told me that a lot of these so-called journalists, once they get a media pass, they used that to blackmail you in spreading false news.
Shakeel Sheikh was a journalist, and he had not left his unethical acts behind even as a cricket administrator. One thing famous about this guy was that he used to blackmail his own Islamabad cricketers. He had a habit of recording his conversations with cricketers and used to get them to back bite and use those recordings against them.
One story I have heard was about the wicket keeper from Islamabad called Naeem Anjum, who once sat with Shakeel Sheikh did back biting of someone and then after that he couldn't get selected for national team. Najeem Anjum was once very close to national selection when i used to follow cricket die handedly.
Shakeel Saab also has his favorite's. People know about Arsal sheikh, how Shakeel Saab got him selected even though he is bad, but little do people know that Shakeel Saab also is a big lobbyist of Imad Waseem. So don't be surprised when Imad Waseem is back in the squads of Pakistan cricket.
Anyways, the guy is one those khata hai tou lagata bhi hai types of people.
Had he not been a flawed person, this guy is an ideal PCB chairman, but he must stop with his dirty acts.
