It's that time of the season again.

Clubs will be on the hunt for a bargain or big-money signing, whether they are aiming for the title, looking to clinch a European spot or trying to avoid relegation.

There is one interesting point to consider this season - players who have played for one team in Europe are no longer cup-tied when they move to another club participating in European competition.

So could that mean clubs are more willing to splash the cash?
How player values are worked out
London-based investment company Carteret Analytics advises three Premier League clubs, and another 12 leading sides from around Europe and the rest of the world, on potential new signings.

Its data centres on the 'intrinsic value' of a player - a fee calculated by assessing their performances for the selling club and the projected impact on the buying club, as well as taking into consideration their prime age (usually 26-30).

The company has provided data for some of the names on BBC Sport's list of players who could move in January.

Premier League
PAUL POGBA (26, midfielder, Manchester United)

Carteret value: £85m

Linked with: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus

The observant ones among you will have noticed that Pogba was on BBC Sport's list of possible movers last January. The midfielder heads the list once again because the transfer chat will just not go away.

The French World Cup winner's appearances have been limited this season because of an ankle injury but Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has declared the midfielder "will not be sold".

Questions remain about his Old Trafford future, though.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (27, midfielder, Tottenham)

Value: £51.4m

Linked with: Real Madrid, Manchester United

"Eriksen has fallen out of love with the club."

That was BBC Radio 5 Live summariser Darren Fletcher's view when watching the Denmark international earlier this season.

Eriksen failed to secure a move away from Spurs in the summer and Carteret say his performances have dropped by 38.5% this season, leading to a drop in his value of £32.22m. Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, asked about Eriksen, has said: "I know his future."

His contract at Spurs ends in the summer and he has shown no inclination to sign a new deal, meaning chairman Daniel Levy may look to recoup some money in January should a decent offer come in.

OLIVIER GIROUD (33, striker, Chelsea)

Linked with: Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid

Another on the list who is a World Cup winner with France.

Giroud has fallen out of favour at Chelsea under Frank Lampard, mainly because of the prolific form of England international Tammy Abraham, while Michy Batshuayi is also ahead of him in the pecking order.

The former Arsenal striker's contract at Stamford Bridge ends in the summer. With almost 80 goals during his Premier League career, he will be an excellent addition for a club lacking a regular scorer.

LUCAS TORREIRA (23, midfielder, Arsenal)

Value: £37.85m

Linked with: Napoli

Uruguay international Torreira impressed in his debut season at Emirates Stadium but has become unsettled in north London this term, fuelling reports of an impending exit.

The combative midfielder joined from Sampdoria and may well head back to Serie A, with his agent saying earlier in the season: "We will see what happens."

CENK TOSUN (28, striker, Everton)

Linked with: Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Besiktas

Tosun this season - Goals for Everton: 1. Goals for Turkey: 3

That probably tells you all you need to know about Tosun's situation at Goodison Park. The former Besiktas forward failed to claim a regular first-team place under Marco Silva and his fortunes have not improved.

Signed for a hefty £27m in January 2018, Tosun was described by then-Toffees boss Sam Allardyce as "the best in Europe" at that price. Not one he got right.

NATHAN AKE (24, defender, Bournemouth)

Value: £52m

Linked with: Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham

If this one happens, it will come late in the transfer window.

Ake has turned into one of the league's most reliable defenders since joining Bournemouth in 2017 and has become a regular in the Netherlands team.

The former Chelsea centre-back is currently out with a hamstring injury and the Blues reportedly have a £40m buy-back clause, £12m lower than his Carteret value.

WILFRIED ZAHA (27, winger, Crystal Palace)

Wilfried Zaha
Value: £41.1m

Linked with: Chelsea

Zaha almost left Selhurst Park in the summer but clubs failed to meet his £80m asking price. That could prove a stumbling block once more as Palace say they have no intention of lowering that figure.

The Ivory Coast international is Palace's best player but could push for a move again if a Champions League club come knocking - and with Chelsea's transfer ban lifted, they could make an offer.

DWIGHT MCNEIL (20, midfielder, Burnley)

Value: £24.75m

Linked with: Tottenham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace

England Under-21 international McNeil, released as a trainee by Manchester United, has built his career at Burnley, for whom he has played nearly every match this season.

The cultured left-footer has impressed on the wing for Sean Dyche's side, providing four goals so far.

DWIGHT GAYLE (29, striker, Newcastle)

Linked with: West Brom, Nottingham Forest, Stoke

The English striker looks to have no future at Newcastle, failing to score in eight appearances this campaign.

Gayle netted 24 times for West Brom in the Championship last season and might have to drop down a division again for regular football.

RHIAN BREWSTER (19, striker, Liverpool)

Linked with: Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Swansea

Brewster hit eight goals to win the golden boot as England claimed the Under-17 World Cup in October 2017.

But with the Liverpool first team firing on all cylinders, the teenager has found opportunities at Anfield hard to come by, making just two Carabao Cup appearances, and it looks as if he will be granted a temporary move away.

From around Europe...
JADON SANCHO (19, winger, Borussia Dortmund)

Value: £44.6m

Linked with: Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona

Sancho has had his problems at Dortmund this season, having been dropped from the team and fined after returning late from England duty.

But he has still enhanced his reputation on the pitch, becoming the first player in Europe's top five leagues to score and assist 10 goals in all competitions this season. Meanwhile, the German side have just splashed out on teenage striking prodigy Erling Braut Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg so may be prepared to listen to offers.

Could Sancho be tempted by a return to the Premier League, where he did not get a chance first time round at Manchester City? He won't come cheap.

GARETH BALE (30, winger, Real Madrid)

Value: £44.7m

Linked with: Tottenham, Manchester United

"Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order."

Bale was already under pressure from the Real fans and he hardly endeared himself as he celebrated with a flag displaying the above message as Wales qualified for Euro 2020.

A move to China broke down in the summer and the former Tottenham and Southampton player has been in and out of the team under Zinedine Zidane. Bale, according to his agent, is "not ecstatic" at the club.

TIMO WERNER (23, striker, RB Leipzig)

Value: £60.61m

Linked with: Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool

With champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund floundering, RB Leipzig have taken charge of the Bundesliga title race.

Striker Werner has played a big role in that run, his 18 goals coming at a rate of one every 79 minutes, and the Germany international could leave if the right offer came in.

EDINSON CAVANI (32, striker, Paris St-Germain)

Linked with: Atletico Madrid, LA Galaxy

Uruguay international Cavani has been pushed down the pecking order at Parc des Princes behind new arrival Mauro Icardi, Kylian Mbappe and - when he is fit - Neymar.

Cavani has scored just three goals this season, his contract is up in June and he could be available at a decent price in January.

THOMAS LEMAR (24, winger, Atletico Madrid)

Linked with: Lyon

France international Lemar was the subject of a £60m bid from Liverpool in 2017, but he stayed at Monaco, and Arsenal failed to sign him in January 2018.

He eventually moved to Atletico Madrid that summer for £52.7m but has been unable to hold down a first-team place. In December, he was booed off by his own fans, despite the team beating Osasuna.

NICOLO ZANIOLO (20, midfielder, Roma)

Value: £22m

Linked with: Tottenham, Manchester United, PSG

Midfielder Zaniolo moved to Roma as part of the deal that took Radja Nainggolan to Inter Milan at the start of the 2018-19 season. It is fair to say Roma got a bargain.

The 20-year-old's form, which saw him voted Serie A's best young player in his debut season, has seen him break into the Italy side.

VEDAT MURIQI (25, striker, Fenerbahce)

Linked with: Leicester, Tottenham, Eintracht Frankfurt, Monaco

Muriqi only joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the summer but has scored 10 goals for the club and could be on the move again.

The towering Kosovo striker, 25, scored in a Euro 2020 qualifier against England - and a number of Premier League clubs are taking an interest.

Football League
JARROD BOWEN (23, forward, Hull)

Value: £7.36m

Linked with: Leicester, Leeds, Newcastle, West Brom

Bowen has been one of the most consistent players in the Championship over the past few years, scoring 14 league goals in 2017-18 and 22 last season.

It has been another prolific campaign for the player this time and a step up to the top flight finally looks on the cards.

LYLE TAYLOR (29, striker, Charlton)

Linked with: Rangers, Swansea, West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday

Montserrat international striker Taylor fired Charlton back into the Championship last season - he was League One's top scorer with 25 goals.

He started the season with five more before suffering a knee injury and, with his contract expiring in the summer, rival clubs are eyeing up a cut-price deal.

JOE WORRALL (22, defender, Nottingham Forest)

Value: £5.78m

Linked with: Arsenal, Everton

Forest, out of the Premier League since 1999, are sniffing around the Championship play-off places as they look to return, with Worrall a mainstay at the back.

But their campaign could be derailed if the defender leaves in January, with leaky Arsenal sending scouts to watch the player this season.

DARREN RANDOLPH (32, goalkeeper, Middlesbrough)

Linked with: West Ham

Republic of Ireland international Randolph is one of the most consistent goalkeepers outside the Premier League.

With Boro struggling at the wrong end of the Championship, clubs needing a reliable stopper may move in, with his former club West Ham heavily linked.

JED WALLACE (25, winger, Millwall)

Value: £5m

Linked with: Aston Villa

With nine goals and six assists this season, Millwall winger Wallace has been linked with top-flight clubs after failing to impress at Wolves.

"His recent stats are unbelievable," manager Gary Rowett has said - and it seems other bosses have also taken note.

MUHAMMADU FAAL (22, striker, Enfield Town)

Linked with: Norwich, Watford, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Sheffield United

The new Jamie Vardy? Here's one from non-league...

Striker Faal has struck 24 times for seventh-tier Enfield Town, attracting the attention of Premier League clubs.

If he does get a move, Faal might find himself playing against Liverpool defender Joe Gomez - his second cousin.

Scotland
SCOTT SINCLAIR (30, winger, Celtic)

Linked with: Derby

The English attacker has fallen out of favour since Neil Lennon's return to the Glasgow club despite three stellar seasons that have yielded multiple trophies and 40 goals in 103 games.

His status as one of the club's highest earners has perhaps contributed to his exile, with English Championship side Preston linked with him in the last window.

GLEN KAMARA (24, midfielder, Rangers)

Linked with: Juventus

The Finn is an interesting one. Signed by Rangers from Dundee for a nominal fee last January after falling out of favour, the midfielder ends 2019 with reports of interest from Juventus and with Euro 2020 to look forward to with his national team.

Manager Steven Gerrard scoffed at reports of an £8m move to Serie A, but Rangers' resolve would be tested with an offer of that nature.

SAM COSGROVE (23, striker, Aberdeen)

Linked with: Stoke

Englishman Cosgrove has scored 41 goals in 58 appearances for Aberdeen to attract interest from his homeland.

Championship strugglers Stoke have been reported to have an interested in the striker, who cost the Scottish Premiership club just £20,000 when they signed him from Carlisle in 2018.

Lyon striker Moussa Dembele is one of the forward options Chelsea are considering trying to sign in January.

Dembele has scored 25 goals since moving to Ligue 1 from Celtic for £20m 18 months ago.

Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are likely to leave Chelsea during the transfer window and Frank Lampard has been tracking Dembele for some time.

Sky Sports News has been told Lampard sees similarities between Dembele and former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba.

Dembele enjoyed a successful spell with Celtic after joining the club from Fulham in 2016 under former boss Brendan Rodgers.

The 23-year-old won two Scottish Premierships, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups at Parkhead before a move to Lyon in August 2018.

He has scored 10 goals in 25 appearances for Lyon so far this season.

Zaha who is too good for Palace needs to move on. I expect Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal to all be busy in the next few weeks. Signing of Minamino is most likely the only one Liverpool will be bringing in although I would love Adama Traore to join us.

CHELSEA CONSIDERING DEMBELE

Chelsea's transfer ban is now over and their first bit of business could be to bring in Lyon and former Celtic player Moussa Dembele.

Sky Sports News understand Chelsea are considering a move for the French striker and that Frank Lampard has been tracking him for some time.

With Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi both likely to leave this month - the head coach is looking for competition for Tammy Abraham.

Juve are not linked with that rangers player, we are linked with kulusevski - owned by atlanta - on loan at parma, he has just won best player in serie a for December 2019.
We are in pole position for him and most likely our hase him for 35m euros and allow him to stay on loan with parma. He's a right winger

BTW, great buy by dortmund for the purchase of haaland- never saw him moving thr, thought man utd/juve were in pole position

Manager Jurgen Klopp says it is "not likely" Liverpool will make any more additions to their title-chasing squad in the January transfer window.

The Reds, 13 points clear at the top of the league, have already brought in Japan international Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg.

"Every year we have the same situation. It is always tricky - we will probably not be too busy," said Klopp.

"We will see what happens, but it is not likely."

Liverpool are suffering from a succession of injuries, with attacking midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri, midfield anchorman Fabinho and centre-halves Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren all ruled out of Thursday's home game against Sheffield United.

With Minamino not eligible to make his debut until the FA Cup meeting with Everton on Sunday, Klopp says he is down to 13 senior outfield players for the match against the Blades.

Youngsters Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot and Neco Williams were all on the bench for the 1-0 win over Wolves last Sunday.

"We have now 13 outfield players plus now Takumi, but not for this game," said Klopp.

"We don't have in all positions massive alternatives, so a few of them have to go again and hopefully they can.

"Ox looks good, Joel looks good, Fabinho looks good, Shaqiri looks good and Lovren looks good, but not ready.

"They need still some time."

Midfielder Adam Lallana made only his third start of the season in the win over Wolves. The 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer and could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club this month.

"He is a very important player in this moment. What will happen in the future, we will see," said Klopp.

"But for him, wherever it is - here or somewhere else - the only important thing is that he can show he is 100% fit.

"He had some injury problems - completely done; trained, body is super fit, mind in a perfect place, enjoys the time here in the moment. You can see that in each second of training and when he plays, very influential.

"But these kind of things we don't discuss in public, so you have to speculate further."

Unconfirmed news:

Tottenham consider move for Atletico midfielder Lemar
Man City target Inter Milan's defender Skriniar

Sky Sports:

Chelsea have made an offer, initial loan with obligation to buy, to Benfica for midfielder Gedson Fernandes. West Ham made an offer for the Portugal international earlier this week

West Ham have made a revised offer for Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, who is also attracting interest from Chelsea.

Benfica are believed to be leaning towards accepting the new deal, with the Portuguese club feeling Fernandes is more likely to maintain his value at West Ham where they feel he will get more first-team opportunities.

Benfica are due to hold a board meeting on Thursday to discuss the final conditions of the proposed deal for the young midfielder.

Why Gedson Fernandes is in demand
West Ham and Benfica have been in continued negotiations over the signing of Fernandes, with the Hammers' initially offering an 18-month loan with an obligation to buy for £33m.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea have also made an offer for Fernandes, which is believed to be an 18-month loan with an obligation to buy for £55m.

Chelsea's offer for Fernandes is dependent on the Portugal international midfielder playing at least 50 per cent of games during his loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder is believed to favour a move to the Premier League and his preferred destination is understood to be London for family reasons.

Fernandes' release clause is £102m but Benfica have already conceded they will not get close to that figure for a player who is out of favour and is reported to have fallen out with head coach Bruno Lage.

Manchester United have offered Ashley Young a one-year contract extension in a bid to keep him at Old Trafford.

The move comes as United try to fend off interest from Inter Milan as Antonio Conte tries to strengthen his squad in the fight for the Serie A title.

The 34-year-old's current deal expires in the summer and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to retain such a versatile player and one of the leaders in his dressing room.

Conte remains a big fan of United's captain and wanted to sign him in the summer of 2017 when he was in charge of Chelsea. It is understood Conte is willing to offer Young an 18-month contract with the Italian side.

Young moved to Old Trafford from Aston Villa in 2011 and has made 261 appearances for the club.

https://www.skysports.com/football/...ffer-ashley-young-one-year-contract-extension

Borussia Dortmund have joined the list of clubs who are keen to sign Norwich right-back Max Aarons.

The 19-year-old's growing list of admirers includes Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham as well as Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig.

However, the majority of those interested would prefer to conclude a deal in the summer.

Norwich are understood to be willing to let Aarons leave Carrow Road this month for a fee of around £30m - with Spurs considering whether to steal a march on their competitors and potentially agree a transfer in the next three weeks.

Aarons joined Norwich's academy in 2016 and made his first-team debut in August last year.

He was a key member of the squad which secured promotion to the Premier League last season after winning the Sky Bet Championship.

Aarons has made 19 Premier League appearances so far this season with Norwich bottom of the table.

Analysis: How Norwich's in-demand full-back went his own way
Sky Sports' Nick Wright...

'Then few weeks into the 2018/19 Championship season - Daniel Farke's second at the helm - he broke into the senior side, making his league debut in a fiercely-contested East Anglian derby against Ipswich.

'He has not looked back.

'Since that afternoon at Portman Road, Aarons has racked up more league minutes than any other outfield player at Norwich. His marauding runs up their right flank were a feature of last year's promotion-winning campaign, earning him a place in the Championship team of the year, and even in what has been a difficult start to the new season, he has handled the step up impressively.'

Manchester United have ruled out making a bid to bring Christian Eriksen to Old Trafford in this window.

Tottenham and AC Milan have held talks about signing Krzysztof Piatek this month.

Talks are not at an advanced stage and no formal offers have yet been made for the Polish striker.

It is unclear at this point if any move would be temporary or permanent.

Tottenham are short of striker options after captain Harry Kane was ruled out until April following surgery on a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.

Piatek joined AC Milan in a £31m deal from Genoa on a four-and-a-half-year contract in January 2019 and has scored 15 goals in 39 appearances.

The 25-year-old, who has 10 caps for Poland, originally joined Genoa for £3.6m from Polish side Cracovia in the summer of 2018.

He was signed by Milan midway through the season after scoring 13 Serie A goals in just 19 appearances for Genoa.

Piatek has not been as prolific this season, scoring four times in 18 Serie A appearances for Stefano Pioli's side, who currently sit 12th in the table.

Milan bolstered their attacking options earlier this month when they signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a six-month deal, with an option to extend his stay by a further year.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are continuing their attempts to sign Christian Eriksen in the coming weeks but no agreement has been reached.

The Italian club's chief executive Giuseppe Marotta confirmed earlier this week that they are interested in the Denmark international but said they have had no discussions with Spurs yet.

Huddersfield Town complete signing of Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe on loan until the end of the season.

Olivier Giroud's departure from Chelsea to Inter Milan has not yet been agreed, Blues boss Frank Lampard has revealed.

Cenk Tosun has joined Crystal Palace on loan from Everton for the remainder of the season.

Tosun, 28, had not been expected to feature in new Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti's plans and was keen to secure regular first-team football.

The Turkey forward has made minimal impact at Goodison Park since he was signed by Sam Allardyce in a £27m deal from Besiktas in January 2018.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson had previously registered his interest in Tosun.

"We're delighted to have secured Cenk's services," Palace chairman Steve Parish said.

"We've enjoyed a great first half of the campaign and Cenk's arrival will bolster our squad as we push for a top-half Premier League finish. Cenk has a proven record as a goalscorer and we've admired him for some time."

Tosun has scored once in eight appearances in all competitions for Everton this season, taking his tally to 10 in 51 games.

He is available to play for Palace as they host tenth-placed Arsenal - the team directly below them - in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Portugal international was a target for United and Tottenham in the summer but eventually stayed at the Primeira Liga club, signing an improved contract in November.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Transfer Talk podcast, Dias, editor-in-chief of Portuguese sports daily O Jogo, said that Sporting will be forced to sell the midfielder due to growing financial difficulties.

"The story so far is that United this time are really closing in on Bruno Fernandes," Dias said. "We ran the story that there are talks between the two clubs and we figured that a deal might be close in the next few days, or hours even, because Sporting need money badly.

"The situation has changed since last summer. They didn't accept a deal with Tottenham for 70m euros but that would have been paid with 40m euros upfront and then another 30m.

"Now Sporting will accept 70m Euros, but paid in instalments. United is a club that Bruno Fernandes really likes in England, it's a club that he really wants to play for.

"Talks have been intensified in the last couple of days, so we're kind of expecting that it might be close."

Reports in Portugal have claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his assistant manager, Mike Phelan, went to watch Fernandes in action against Porto on Sunday, although the United boss refused to answer questions on the matter on Friday.

The 25-year-old claimed in August that Sporting blocked a move to Tottenham in the summer after expressing a desire to play in England, and Dias claims the decision took its toll on the player.

"When the deal with Tottenham didn't go through, it didn't affect Bruno Fernandes' game, but it did affect him mentally," Dias said.

"He is the team captain and he never stops complaining, arguing with referees all the time. You can see that he is fed up, he is a top quality player and he needs another challenge.

"Here in Portugal when you have a big player who is attracted to the market, sometimes clubs to reinforce their position negotiation-wise, they review the contract.

"They raised the salary a little bit, but what they want is to raise the release clause so they have more power when it comes to negotiate.

"The thing with Bruno Fernandes was that they tried to raise the salary to calm him down a little bit and to compensate for the fact that a deal in the summer didn't go through."

'United are in need of bodies'

Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper says: "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may not have been prepared to fully reveal his weekend location, but it appears the club could be looking at a midfielder they've been linked with before, Sporting Lisbon's Bruno Fernandes.

"United are in need of bodies in their midfield and were already actively looking at transfer options before the injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.

"Of the current squad only Juan Mata was a January acquisition, Manchester United traditionally don't do much business or successful business in this window.

"Solskjaer does have the resources to bring in players and has said he wants his squad to emerge stronger rather than weaker from this window. He is also preparing to lose his captain, Ashley Young, so perhaps a purchase is on the cards?"

AC Milan are hopeful of signing Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as their replacement for Pepe Reina, who is set to move to Aston Villa.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is having a medical with AC Milan ahead of a loan move to the Serie A giants for the remainder of the season.

Milan need a keeper after letting Pepe Reina join Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season.

Begovic, 32, has played 62 times for Bournemouth after joining them from Chelsea in 2017.

The Bosnian has fallen out of favour and spent the early part of this season on loan in Azerbaijan with Qarabag.

Aaron Ramsdale, 21, has been first choice goalkeeper for Eddie Howe this season, with Mark Travers, 20, chosen when he was unavailable.

Norwich City have signed Slovakia attacking midfielder Ondrej Duda on loan from Hertha Berlin for the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old has not played for the German club since early December but scored 11 goals and had six assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Norwich are eight points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League.

"I'm going to do my best, but first of all, I need to get into match rhythm and we will see," he said.

"I hope we are going to take some points, step-by-step. In the end, hopefully everyone will be happy."

Canaries boss Daniel Farke said: "It's a good deal for all parties.

"We're bringing in a player who can play in the number 10 role or in the wider areas and he's proved he can score goals and provide assists at the highest level.

"We'll have to see how quickly he can help us and adapt, but we're hopeful he can be a very good option for us in the second part of the season."

Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon have held face-to-face talks over the transfer of £60m-rated Bruno Fernandes.

Midfielder Fernandes, 25, scored twice as Sporting beat Vitoria Setubal 3-1 in the Portuguese top flight on Saturday.

The Portugal international is keen on a move but there has been no agreement between the clubs over a fee.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his assistant, Mike Phelan, watched Fernandes play against FC Porto on 5 January.

Solskjaer has refused to talk publicly about Fernandes and has insisted the club will only sign long-term targets in the January transfer window, despite injuries to midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

However, it is understood United are prioritising midfield as an area to strengthen.

Solskjaer's side are fifth in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the battle for a Champions League place.

Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes is due to have a medical at Tottenham on Monday before an 18-month loan to the Premier League club.

Fernandes had been targeted by West Ham but has opted instead to join Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

If he passes the medical, the 21-year-old will become Mourinho's first signing as Tottenham manager.

"I am waiting for news," Mourinho said on Monday. "I don't want to talk about a Benfica player."

It is understood Tottenham will have an option to buy Fernandes when his loan deal with the Premier League club expires in 2021.

His arrival will be a boost for Mourinho, who has lost skipper Harry Kane and influential midfielder Moussa Sissoko to long-term injury.

Lukas Rupp: Norwich sign German midfielder from Hoffenheim

Norwich City have completed the signing of German midfielder Lukas Rupp from Hoffenheim for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old has signed a contract to the summer of 2022 for the Canaries, who are bottom of the Premier League.

"I'm very happy to be here. It's a childhood dream," said Rupp. "I was in the Bundesliga for 10 years now and it's a new chapter for me."

Norwich boss Daniel Farke added: "He'll be a valuable option for us going forward and is a very good character."

After starting his career with Karlsruher, he has since gone on to play top-flight football in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach, Paderborn, Stuttgart and Hoffenheim.

"I was in the training camp in Marbella with Hoffenheim and then two days later, I'm here so it's been very quick," added Rupp. "But I wanted to be part of the team here and help the team stay in the Premier League."

German Farke added: "Lukas is a great guy who has a lot of experience. He's played for some very big clubs in Germany and has a lot of game time in the Bundesliga.

"He's a versatile player who can play in a number of positions in the midfield and has also played at full-back."

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette is an option for Atletico Madrid if they are unable to get a deal for Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani over the line.

Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin met with PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi in Paris on Tuesday to discuss the proposed Cavani transfer.

Any deal between Arsenal and Atletico involving Lacazette moving to Spain could also mean France forward Thomas Lemar coming to the Emirates.

Lemar has struggled for form since leaving Monaco for Madrid at the start of last season, a move which came about after he was heavily linked with Arsenal and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The 24-year-old scored only three goals in his first La Liga campaign and he is without a goal so far this season.

Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero told Sky Sports News: "Lacazette is a second option for Atletico Madrid.

"If they can loan or maybe there is a transfer for Lacazette, it's always if Thomas Lemar goes to Arsenal and that will be the agreement.

"As we said on Monday with Quique Setien being the first option [to become Barcelona head coach], the first option for Atletico Madrid is Edinson Cavani, the Uruguay striker.

"They are meeting in Paris to ask, maybe not for the transfer, but for a loan and that is Diego Simeone's first option."

Christian Eriksen and Olivier Giroud: Inter Milan director in London for transfer talks

Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio is in London to meet with Tottenham and Chelsea about deals to sign Christian Eriksen and Olivier Giroud, according to Sky in Italy.
Eriksen is out of contract in the summer and is keen to move to the Italian club, Inter Milan have offered 8.5 millions pounds for Eriksen but Tottenham value the Denmark international at double that fee.
Personal terms are not expected to be a problem for the 27-year-old Tottenham midfielder but the two clubs are currently apart in their valuation of the player.
Sky in Italy reported last Friday Giroud, whose Blues deal expires in the summer, had agreed a two and a half year contract.
There is less than £1m (€1.17m) between Chelsea's request and Inter's offer. The Blues have asked for £4.3m plus £850,000 (€5m + €1m), while Inter have offered £3.4m plus £850,000 (€4m + €1m).
Lyon have also been keen to sign on the 33-year-old Chelsea forward, while Aston Villa made a loan approach earlier in the window.

Giroud has scored 19 goals since joining Chelsea in January 2018, although only five have come in the league where the majority of his appearances have been as a substitute.

He has only made five Premier League appearances this season, with four of his five goals for the campaign on international duty and the fifth in the European Super Cup against Liverpool.
A move to Inter would reunite Giroud with Antonio Conte, who initially signed him for Chelsea after his five-and-a-half season spell with London rivals Arsenal.

A £1.3m deal to bring Ashley Young to Inter Milan from Manchester United has been completed, according to Sky in Italy.

Tottenham have not received a transfer bid for Christian Eriksen and the midfielder will play against Watford on Saturday, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The Dane is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a January move to Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old, who joined Spurs in 2013, has featured in 18 of 22 Premier League games so far this season.

"You have to ask the agent and Inter because they know more than me," said Mourinho on Friday.

"If they are confident it is because they are ready to make us an offer, which didn't happen yet."

Eriksen has started all four of Tottenham's games this month despite Mourinho saying the player is "not totally focused" because of the speculation surrounding his future.

"When I see people speaking, especially people with responsibilities, it makes me surprised," added the Portuguese, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs boss in November.

"He is trying to do his best and it is normal until 31 January his brain is not totally focused. It is a normal consequence of the situation.

"For a few matches people are saying he is playing his last game. Eriksen plays tomorrow."

Tottenham are eighth in the Premier League, nine points off a Champions League place, and visit Watford in Saturday's 12:30 GMT kick-off.

Mourinho 'trying to add players to squad'
Spurs will be without England striker Harry Kane, who is ruled out until April with a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

Mourinho says the club need to sign a replacement this month if the right target becomes available.

"Lots of names are coming and the majority of them are coming by players' entourages, agents, people that want to put players' names in the market," added the 56-year-old.

"Do we need a striker? Yes - if possible, yes. But it has to be a positive situation for us."

Mourinho says Tottenham still have attacking options in the shape of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Giovani lo Celso and Dele Alli.

"Of course they're very good, but we miss that target man," he said.

"We are doing everything possible. It's not easy but we're trying to add players to the squad."

Tottenham have already brought in midfielder Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica for 18 months - with an option to buy at the end of that period - and could also turn Lo Celso's loan from Real Betis into a permanent move.

The Premier League club can buy Argentine Lo Celso for £27.2m during this window, a price that will rise to an obligatory £34m in the summer.

"I think Giovani is going to stay with us," said Mourinho.

"There are some loans where you have the opportunity to be in control of the situation, like is happening with Gedson.

"There are some emergency loans and there are other loans where the objective is to be in control of the future of the player without any need of further negotiations."

Liverpool have turned down approaches from Italian club Roma and Spanish side Sevilla to take Switzerland midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri on loan.

The Reds are not prepared to let Shaqiri leave in January as they close on the Premier League title and remain in the Champions League and FA Cup.

Nor will they consider a loan deal with an option to buy the 28-year-old.

The club will not sell him until the summer when they would value him at 30 million euros (£25.5m).

Liverpool signed Shaqiri from Stoke City in July 2018 after triggering his £13m release clause.

He helped them win the Champions League last season and, in 30 appearances during the 2018-19 campaign, scored six goals and created five assists.

This season he has been hindered by injury and has featured only 10 times for the Reds, scoring once.

Inter Milan have rejected a loan offer from #MUFC for midfielder Matias Vecino, according to Sky in Italy.

Flamengo defender Pablo Mari arrived in London ahead of an anticipated move to Arsenal.

Mari is expected to join the Gunners on loan with an option to buy – which is reportedly set at £7.5million – after arriving at Heathrow Airport with Arsenal technical director Edu on Saturday.

The 26-year-old is set to become Mikel Arteta's first signing since taking over as head coach in December.

Mari joined Manchester City in 2016 but never played for the first team, leaving for Flamengo last July after loan stints at Girona, NAC Breda and Deportivo La Coruna.

The 26-year-old was a key figure under Jorge Jesus, who led the Rio de Janeiro giants to the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores titles.

He also featured when Flamengo lost the Club World Cup final against Liverpool 1-0 after extra time.

Arsenal have been keen to bolster their defensive options following injuries to Calum Chambers, Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac.

The 27-year-old Eriksen is due to complete a £16.8m move to Italy which could see him earn up to £320,000 per week, with the deal expected to be finalised on Monday.

Tottenham have made an approach to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn.

The 22-year-old, capped seven times by the Netherlands, was left out of the PSV squad to face FC Twente on Sunday.

Bergwijn played against Tottenham in last season's Champions League group stage match between the sides, which Spurs won 2-1 at Wembley.

PSV have been keen to keep Bergwijn at the club and secured him to a new four-year contract in August following months of speculation about his future.

Bergwijn has struggled to recapture his fine goalscoring form from last season, in which he netted 15 goals in 41 appearances, during the current campaign.

He has scored just six goals in 26 matches for PSV, who currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie, 12 points behind leaders Ajax.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen is expected to finalise his departure from Tottenham to Inter Milan in the next 24 hours.

The 27-year-old midfielder is close to sealing a £16.8m move to the San Siro, which could see him earn up to £320,000 per week.

Tottenham have been keen to sell Eriksen this month to prevent him leaving on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Inter Milan have completed the signing of Christian Eriksen from Tottenham for a fee of around £16.9m.

The 27-year-old Denmark midfielder has signed a contract until 30 June 2024.

Eriksen told Spurs in the summer he wanted a fresh challenge with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

After a hoped-for move to Spain failed to materialise, Eriksen began the season with Spurs and played 28 times in all competitions this season.

Inter currently sit second in Serie A, three points behind leaders Juventus.

"I'm very excited and can't wait to introduce myself to the fans," Eriksen said. "I've already experienced their warmth, it's been a fantastic welcome. I feel great."

"The numbers say that I did really well in England. It's now time to start a new challenge, I'm really happy to have the opportunity to play in Serie A for a big team. Inter is a fantastic club."

Meanwhile, Tottenham have made midfielder Giovani Lo Celso's loan move from Real Betis permanent, completing a £27.2m transfer.

West Ham have agreed a £13m deal to sign Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Soucek from Slavia Prague.

Manager David Moyes confirmed Soucek, 24, is undergoing a medical at the Hammers' Rush Green training ground.

"He fits the profile of the player I want," Moyes said of Soucek, who has 25 caps for his country.

Moyes, who replaced Manuel Pellegrini on 30 December, said the club have also submitted a bid for another player, who is believed to be a right-back.

Soucek has scored 10 goals in 19 appearances for Slavia this season.

West Ham are 17th in the Premier League table, outside of the relegation places only on goal difference.

"We are in a difficult period where we need experienced players," added Moyes, who is in his second spell at the club.

"At the moment he [Soucek] ticks a lot of boxes. We need to give him an opportunity and time to settle in."

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is set to join Argentine club Estudiantes on loan.

The Argentina centre-back, who joined from Sporting Lisbon for £16m in 2014, has not featured for United since the 3-1 win over Brighton on 10 November.

On Tuesday United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the 29-year-old was unlikely to leave Old Trafford in the transfer window that closes on Friday.

However it is understood a deal is in place for him to return to Argentina.

Rojo, who has also played left-back for United, has started just 13 games in the last two years, despite being given a lucrative new contract until 2021 in March 2018.

Richarlison: Everton reject Barcelona's £85m offer

Everton have turned down an offer of €100m (£85m) from Barcelona for Brazilian striker Richarlison.

Everton rejected the offer immediately, unwilling to sell one of their prized assets as they look to strengthen their squad - rather than deplete it.

Richarlison is a long-standing target of Barca's sporting director Eric Abidal, who enquired about the 22-year-old's availability last summer but saw those advances knocked back.

Abidal believes Richarlison, who signed a new five-year deal at Everton in December, would complement Luis Suarez's style of play.

Barca, currently three points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid, are looking for a striker to strengthen their squad after Suarez was ruled out for four months following knee surgery earlier in January.

Richarlison joined Everton for £40m from Watford back in July 2018, and has scored 24 goals in 60 appearances, including 10 in 27 games so far this campaign.

On Tuesday, it emerged Barca had also missed out on Valencia striker Rodrigo

The Spanish champions have until Friday to bring in a forward this month, with La Liga's transfer window closing at 11pm GMT on January 31 - the same time as the Premier League.

Luke Matheson joins Wolves from Rochdale in deal worth £1m

Teenage defender Luke Matheson has joined Wolves in a deal worth £1m, but will remain on loan at Rochdale until the end of the season.

The 17-year-old England Under-18 international scored against Manchester United in the EFL Cup in September.

Matheson has made 15 starts for the League One club, scoring his first league goal against Bolton in January.

At 15 years and 336 days, the full-back became Rochdale's youngest-ever first-team player.

Matheson, who has been at Rochdale since the age of eight, signed his first professional contract in October, just weeks after turning 17.

"The system we play, it's set up for him. He plays at right-back for Rochdale at the moment, but he's a right wing-back in our eyes because of his energy and ability to continually sprint and recover," said Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

"At 17, for a boy to have so much experience, be English and have such a strong mentality is fantastic and we think he's everything we're about.

"He's playing so often at Rochdale, so we're sending him back there on loan, to continue to get experience and that should hopefully give him more game time.

"Then he'll come back to us for the start of pre-season in the summer. It's great for all of us to get him in the building, we're really excited and we think he's going to be a top talent."

Barcelona to sign Francisco Trincao from Braga & Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras

Barcelona say they have agreed to sign forward Francisco Trincao from Braga for 31m euros (£26m).

The 20-year-old will join the Spanish club on 1 July until the end of the 2025 season and his contract has a 500m euro buy-out clause.

Portugal Under-21 international Trincao made his debut in his country's top-flight in January 2019.

He has made 11 league appearances for Braga this season, scoring twice and managing two assists.

Later on Friday, Barcelona announced the signing of 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras for an initial fee of seven million euros (£5.8m) with three million euros (£2.5m) in add-ons.

He will join on 1 July on a five-year deal with a 300m euro (£251m) release clause.

Fernandes has scored once in 11 matches since joining Brazilian side Palmeiras from Botafogo last year and he has represented Brazil's under-17 and under-20 sides.

West Ham hopeful of signing Hull forward Bowen for initial £18m

Arsenal sign defender Soares from Southampton
Sheff Utd sign striker Zivkovic on loan from Changchun Yatai and defender Panos Retsos on loan from Bundesliga
Rochdale defender Matheson, 17, to join Wolves for £1m

West Ham's late capture of Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen for an initial £18m was the only big-money move of the lowest-spending Premier League January transfer deadline day since 2010.

Premier League clubs spent £230m in the month, the second highest total ever.

But only £25m of that was spent on deadline day.

Odion Ighalo's move from Shanghai Shenhua to Manchester United dominated headlines, but was a loan deal - like five of the 11 top-flight signings.

The £1.6bn spent this season, including the summer window, is the second highest behind 2017-18's £1.9bn, according to figures from Deloitte.

The deadline closed for English clubs at 23:00 GMT on Friday, with Scotland's one hour later.

The previous time Premier League deadline day spending went under £30m was in 2010, when only £10m was spent. The highest spend was £180m in 2018.

The second biggest transfer on deadline day in terms of fee was Brighton signing 19-year-old Chelsea defender Tariq Lamptey for a reported £4.5m. Arsenal signed Southampton right-back Cedric Soares on loan.

Aston Villa brought in Swansea City striker Borja Baston on a free transfer.

Leicester brought in Wolves defender Ryan Bennett on loan, their only January transfer.

Sheffield United signed Dutch forward Richairo Zivkovic and Greece defender Panagiotis Retsos on loan.

Norwich signed Coventry defender Sam McCallum for a reported £3m, while Wolves spent £1m on Rochdale defender Luke Matheson - with both players rejoining their old clubs on loan.

Manchester United recruited Southend United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop for an undisclosed fee, with the 20-year-old going into their development squad.

Chelsea were one of three Premier League clubs to not sign anybody in January, despite winning an appeal to reduce their transfer ban. Reigning champions Manchester City and relegation battlers Bournemouth were the others.

Tim Bridge, director in the sports business group at Deloitte, said: "Two seasons ago Premier League clubs spent a record £430m in the January transfer window. However, over the last two January windows spending patterns have returned to normal. Clubs are focused on long-term financial stability and are therefore less willing to spend in excess of pre-defined transfer budgets in pursuit of short-term success.

"This is further evidenced by the prominence of more agile transfer strategies, such as utilising loan transfers often with an option to buy, as well as focusing attention towards the promotion of young talent from club academies in recent years."

It was also deadline day in the Football League, with Championship club Brentford paying a combined fee of at least £3m for Oxford United duo Shandon Baptiste and Tariqe Fosu.

Hull City paid £1.5m for 19-year-old Motherwell forward James Scott.

Scottish title chasers Rangers signed Genk midfielder Ianis Hagi and Hibernian striker Florian Kamberi - both on loan.

The transfer deadline also took place in Europe's top leagues. Barcelona bought Braga forward Francisco Trincao for £26m and Palmeiras midfielder Matheus Fernandes Siqueira for £5.9m - although neither player joins them until the summer.

All of Europe's top five leagues spent more this January than last year. Serie A clubs spent £180m, Bundesliga sides paid £165m, La Liga teams purchased players for £110m and Ligue 1 sides spent £100m.

Here are some more facts from Deloitte

Only 2% of Premier League spending was on players from fellow English top-flight clubs. The previous low was 11% last year
The 'big six' Premier League clubs accounted for 52% of the total gross expenditure in the January 2020 transfer window, compared to 43% in January 2019
Fulham (£24m) spent about 65% of the total £37m spent by all Championship clubs this month
Net transfer expenditure (player purchases minus player sales) for Premier League clubs' totalled £165m for the window, a record for January
What were the biggest signings of the window?

Two of the three biggest Premier League signings happened on the penultimate day of the window.

Manchester United signed Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes for a fee which starts at £47m and could rise to £67.7m. Sheffield United broke their club record to sign Genk midfielder Sander Berge for £22m.

Spurs have made the loan signing of Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso permanent for a fee of £27.2m and added forward Steven Bergwijn for £27m from PSV Eindhoven, after selling Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan for £16.9m.

Wolves spent a reported £16.9m on Portuguese winger Daniel Podence from Olympiakos. Along with Bowen, those were the only six £10m+ Premier League signings in January.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid spent £26m on Flamengo youngster Reinier Jesus and Borussia Dortmund bought Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Erling Braut Haaland for £17m.

Did Brexit affect deadline day?
The United Kingdom left the European Union at 23:00 GMT, the exact same time as the transfer deadline.

Brexit is not thought to have affected this year's transfer window - but it could change England's transfer system in the future.

Sports lawyer Daniel Geey, author of 'Done Deal', told BBC Sport: "One of the most signification elements is about what the work permit restrictions are going to be. At present, this applies to non-European footballers coming into the UK and will presumably apply to non-UK workers after Brexit.

"The current criteria for non-EU players coming into the Premier League is to do with the country they play for and their Fifa world ranking, along with how many times they played for their senior international team over two years. There is an exceptions panel. The higher the fee and wages, the more likely you can demonstrate they are an exceptional talent and should be allowed a work permit."

It is not clear what the immigration system will be in the future. But Geey says clubs could be allowed a certain amount of foreign players each.

"So it wouldn't matter whether a player is from Bolivia or Belgium," he said. "That's one of the contentious elements that is being discussed at present."

When did the deadline close?
In the Premier League and English Football League, the deadline was at 23:00 GMT on Friday - although clubs were allowed to complete deals later as long as they completed a deal sheet in time - and in Scotland it was midnight.

Spain, Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands also had 31 January deadlines. Portuguese clubs can still buy players until 2 February, while Russian, Chinese and US clubs are among those who can still bring in new players.

Is there any chance of more signings this season?
Clubs can sign free agents after the deadline - at any stage of the season - as long as they left their previous club before the transfer deadline.

No loan signings can be made by EFL or Premier League clubs after the deadline, except in extreme circumstances - such as a club's senior goalkeepers all being unavailable.

Can new signings play this weekend?
It is unlikely any deadline signings will play this weekend. They would only be eligible if they signed before 12:00 GMT on Friday.

Only McCallum, who rejoined Coventry on loan, and Soares were done in that time - and the new Arsenal full-back has a knock so is unlikely to face Burnley on Sunday.

The transfer window for clubs in England and Scotland to make new signings opened on Wednesday, 1 January.

The deadline for Premier League and English Football League clubs to make new signings is 23:00 GMT on Friday, 31 January, while the cut-off for teams in Scotland is midnight.

Premier League clubs vote for return to longer summer transfer window

Premier League clubs have voted to change the summer transfer window to bring it in line with the rest of Europe.

For the past two seasons, the window in England has closed the day before the top-flight campaign began.

In a statement, the Premier League said the deadline has been changed to the "traditional point at the end of August/early September".

The 2020 closing date will be 1 September at 17:00 BST.

The vote was taken at a Premier League shareholders' meeting in London on Thursday.

The transfer window was moved to the start of August in England following complaints from clubs and managers that keeping it open after the start of the season was disruptive.

It was hoped major leagues across Europe would also bring their own windows forward.

However, that did not happen and a number of clubs found themselves in the uncomfortable position of knowing their players were in demand across the continent but unable to bring in replacements for anyone they wanted to sell.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has previously voiced support for bringing the closure of the summer transfer window back in line with the rest of Europe.

"I don't care when it closes, but it must close at the same time," he said in September. "They spoke about finishing it before the season starts.

Good idea, but only England did it. That makes no sense. It was a good idea but it didn't work out."
