No thread on the best team ever? Anyways off to a good victory away against Bolton, should have won 3-1 but 3 points away in first match is good enough. Will this be the season when we are back to where we belong?

You did well last season, Sakho is class, Chris Wood is the Championships Harry Kane, and Pontus Jannson is the best centre back in the league. You've got a great stadium and fantastic fans and you've finally managed to get rid of your megalomaniac owner, however I'm not sold on your manager, didn't rate him at Swansea and last season you should've got into the play offs minimum, didn't help he was more interested in fighting Huddersfields manager or dropping Jansson for something ridiculous. Maybe it's also the fact I think he did a Craig Shakespeare to Michael Laudrup, who's a hero of mine from my childhood.

Anyway, what are your hopes for this season?

PK's support 2 teams (Man U and Liverpool) in the main even if they live right next to a their own town Premier league team. I find that bizzare but its nice that some cares about small none entities like Leeds.

Haha never knew there were other Leeds fans here.

Cautiously optimistic about this season. Will take the squad time to gel but we've signed some absolute gems I feel. Alioski and Saiz in particular, while Anita was a smart bit of business.

2 clean sheets, no losses and five points from first 3 games is also a fairly solid beginning for me, expected worse with the number of new signings.

One thing is for sure, with Radz at the helm, rebuying Elland Road and Leeds is finally after 20 years being ran like an actual proper football club. No more of Bates asset stripping, GFH's incompetence or Cellino's insanity, just professional work being done.

Seeing Elland Road getting a makeover and all the positive news lately is really giving me the impression that finally, this giant is starting to reawaken.....

Monk is gone mate, off to Boro, got a new promising but untested coach in. Tbh thats the story of most of our squad.

Such a non entity that after 15 seasons outside the top flight fans like yourselves keep telling us we're small :P

Mid-table. Saiz hasnt done anything besides League 1 Port Vale and Wood could be off. Look toothless in attack

A draw at home against Fulham early in the season is not that bad at all but I was disappointed we didn't beat Preston at home, and they had a guy sent off as well in second half. Nevertheless still unbeaten:)

Nonsense. Saiz arrived in the summer mate, has a whopping 1 league start so to brush him off like that is pretty hilarious.

As for Wood Burnley had two bids instantly rejected and have since moved onto other targets. Wood won't be going anywhere

Excellent victory away against Sunderland, lols we noe have two victories away and two draws at home, but still unbeaten.

Yeah seems like that. Really bad newz this, he was a close to complete striker who was good in the air also due to his hight.

Wont act like its not a blow but this isnt the end of the world. Reality of being a Champ side is youll always lose your best if you dont go up. We're getting a lot of money for him at least and have already bid for Rudy Gestede at Boro. With Radrizzani at least the money will be reinvested and not pocketed by thieves like Bates.

Also, I get the feeling Wood wouldnt suit Chjristensen's style of play anyway.

Fantastic win at Sunderland btw, Saiz and Alioski really do look like absolute gem signings. Worried now if we dont go up this season they wont be here next year.

A shame, but he's gone now, got to move on. The lads will do a good job without him I'm sure.

Agree with you and yeah really impressed with both Alioski and Saiz, really looking good so far.

Hey you still have the Swedish beast that is Pontus Jasson. Very nice for Leeds to get him from Torino after the loan spell because Torino might have kept him due their defence being trash as it leaked about 60+ goals last season.

5-1 win against Newport at home. Another good result. Still unbeaten!

Another away victory, well played lads, keep it up:)

Fantastic stuff. For some reason we seem to be a better team when we play away. We need to forge an equally strong home record if we want to be automatic promotion contenders.

Unreal start to the season, squad looks in excellent shape.

Where's the fool in the thread who said Saiz was rubbish??? hahahaha

Lols, Saiz is class at this level. Alioski is another good signing, but he needs to be a bit more accurate with his passings, will only get better.

Chris Wood scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Tottenham...

Would not have had any issue with him leaving but he refused to play vs Sunderland, which is disgraceful.

Hearing Sky commies during that game praise it as "professionalism" sums up where football has gone.

Agreed. Too many footballers behaving as if they own the world these days.

Demolition job yesterday. 5 0 and 30 shots to 1.

Best squad we've had in fifteen years by a mile.

I hope to be at this game. Wolves usually beat Dirty Leeds.

22 Nov - Championship

Fairly decent sign when you make 9 changes, still play fairly well and beat Burnley away!

Great spirit shown by the team tonight, onwards!

The Leeds United Discussion Thread (15 years of exile from English Prem League)

Still chasing the glory days: More Leeds heartbreak after epic choke

The wait goes on for Leeds United.

The former Premier League heavyweights will be spending yet another season in the Championship after the bid to end their 15-year exile from the top flight ended in heartbreak on Thursday (AEST), losing at home to Derby in a promotion playoffs semi-final.

It’s another golden missed opportunity for a big club popular among Australians, owing to their glory days, featuring Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka and including a third place Premier League finish in 2000.

After an impressive campaign in which the Whites finished third, a chance to feature in the playoff final at Wembley went begging at the final hurdle.

The side suffered a shock 4-3 aggregate defeat to Frank Lampard’s Derby County, meaning it’ll be the Rams who square off with Aston Villa on May 27 in the playoff final.

For a year that looked destined to finish positively — Leeds were second and in the box seat for automatic promotion only a month ago — it’s a disappointing finishing for the West Yorkshire club.

After picking up just four points in their last fives regular season games, Marcelo Bielsa’s side dropped and were forced into the playoffs.

A 1-0 away win in the first leg of their playoff semi-final against the Rams put a promotion tilt back in the frame only for a second-leg choke on home soil to send them straight back down to earth — earth being a 16th straight season outside the Premier League (they spent three seasons in League One from 2007-2010).

Argentine tactician Bielsa has captivated the football-mad area in his own unique way, arguably putting more pairs of eyes on the English second division than ever before.

The off-field drama in January when Leeds faced an investigation by the FA after Bielsa admitted to sending someone to spy on — you guessed it — Derby at their training ground.

The club ultimately avoided a points penalty but were fined £200,000 (A$362,000), keeping their quest for Premier League promotion alive.

The controversy didn’t stop there either.

One of the craziest moments the game of football has ever seen soon followed as Bielsa officially ended Leeds’ hopes of automatic promotion in a bizarre, but respectable, act.

In the second-last game of the season, Leeds broke an unwritten rule and scored instead of kicking the ball out of play for an injured Aston Villa player.

Remarkably, much to the anger of many diehard Leeds fans, Bielsa instructed his side to allow Villa to score an uncontested goal meaning the score ended 1-1.

Fittingly, their season ended with more drama with an 85th minute Jack Marriott goal for Derby condemning Leeds to another year away from English football’s elite.

This side will probably only be remembered for failing to clinch Premier League promotion but the signs suggest a return could be imminent — Leeds registered their highest Championship finish since their relegation in 2003–04.

Ultimately, though, it’ll go down as another failed year for Leeds United — a club that is still one the biggest and most-followed teams on the globe, and the agonising wait for their fans goes on.

We will make it next year IA. Never give up!

They were winning 1-0 and leading 2-0 on aggregate last night before I went out. Really shocked to see they lost 4-2 when I came back. They aren't my team but I think they belong to the Premier. Always a great atmosphere at Elland Road and I have a soft spot for Bielsa, a manager that many of today's managerial superstars like Pochettino and Guardiola consider one of their mentors.

So guys, will we be playing in PL in August 2020?

Just need Hernandez back quickly, looking very good so far. We should have defeated Arsenal in the FA cup. The first half was one of the best Leeds have delivered in last couple of years. Mamoon

Leeds is a fantastic club. If you love English football, you love Leeds unless you are a Man United fan. They belong in the PL.

Bielsa is a fantastic coach who has won very little in his career because he hasn’t had the luck to coach the elite teams.

If life had taken a different turn he could have easily won multiple leagues and UCLs and be regarded in the same vein as modern greats like Pep, Klopp, Mourinho, Ancelotti etc.

Football can be cruel - Bielsa is at Leeds while a vastly inferior coach like Valverde has the privilege of working at Barcelona with Messi.

Leeds battered Arsenal in the first half but Arteta’s tweaks helped Arsenal get a grip on the game in the second half. It was a battle between two tactically astute managers.

I think Leeds will not only play in the PL next season but they will also do very well. If Bielsa stays for another 3-4 seasons, Leeds will become PL regulars.

However, I still hope that he gets one final chance at mainstream glory by replacing Valverde at Barcelona. He has been close to the job multiple times in the past but has always ended up missing out.

Leeds will be promoted this season and rightly so. Bielsa in the premier league will be so entertaining.

On a very good track, surely we can’t mess it up from here. Power display against Stoke tonight!

Would be a massive choke if Leeds don't get promoted from here.

I am also fascinated to see what will happen with Ben White if Leeds get promoted.

I watched the Stoke game (tells you about state of boredom that I’m watching championship game of 2 teams I don’t care about) and Leeds football was scintillating. Genuinely better quality on display than majority of premier league teams.

I just hope they don’t do a west Brom from several years ago who played good football but got relegated

Bielsa requires total control and power overall almost all aspects of the club as well as time for his ideas to work. You just don’t get that at massive clubs these days which is why he couldn’t last even at Marseille and Lazio type semi-big clubs.

He’s lucky at Leeds that he’s got an owner of the club who’s given free rein

When it comes to the Championship, I root for one team and one team alone: Preston North End. I don’t know anything about them, apart from the fact that they were the first ever champions of the English top flight, but are to date the only former top flight champions never to have played in the Premiership, which is a crying shame and a historical wrong that must be righted.

This season, they’ve been in the playoff slots for long stretches, but seem to have fallen out right at the business end of things. Oh well, maybe next season.

David Beckham played for them

Fascinating. They’ve also got the oldest stadium location in continuous use. The universe needs them in the Premiership, if only for just the one season. I don’t care if they get relegated immediately and never get promoted again, but them never having made it triggers my OCD.

Jack Charlton: 1966 England World Cup winner dies aged 85

Jack Charlton, a World Cup winner with England and former Republic of Ireland boss, has died aged 85.

The former Leeds defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and also had dementia.

One of English football's most popular characters, he was in the team that won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966, alongside his brother Bobby.

He made a record number of appearances for Leeds and achieved unprecedented success with the Republic of Ireland.

A family statement read: "Jack died peacefully on Friday, July 10 at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.

"As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

"We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.

"He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.

"His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories."

The England football team tweeted to say they were "devastated" by the news, while he was hailed as a man who "changed Irish football forever" by the Football Association of Ireland.

"He was a great and lovable character and he will be greatly missed. The world of football and the world beyond football has lost one of the greats. RIP old friend," said England's 1966 World Cup final hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst.

Charlton had spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

He led the Republic of Ireland to their first major finals at Euro 88 and the World Cup quarter-finals at Italia 90.

Leeds United, where he spent his entire 21-year playing career and made a joint club record 773 appearances before retiring as a player in 1973, said they were "deeply saddened".

Charlton, part of the Leeds side that won the 1969 League title and the 1972 FA Cup, is the third club legend and former England international to die this year after Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry.

Despite not being called into the England team until days before his 30th birthday, Charlton won 35 caps and, playing alongside younger brother Bobby, lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley in 1966.

He also helped England finish third at the 1968 European Championship, and was voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1967.

"Saddened to hear that Jack Charlton has passed away," wrote former England striker Gary Lineker on Twitter.

"World Cup winner with England, manager of probably the best ever Ireland side and a wonderfully infectious personality to boot. RIP Jack."

Former Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge said: "Absolutely gutted that big Jack has passed away.

"What a football man, loved and adored, especially in Ireland. The best manager I was lucky to play for.

"The times we had on and off the pitch were priceless. My thoughts are with Pat and the family. RIP my good friend. Never forgotten."

He is survived by wife Pat, whom he married in 1958, and their three children, John, Deborah and Peter.

Charlton's granddaughter, journalist Emma Wilkinson, tweeted: "Beyond sad to have to say goodbye to my beloved Grandad, Jack Charlton.

"He enriched so many lives through football, friendship and family. He was a kind, funny and thoroughly genuine man and our family will miss him enormously."

Irish president Michael D Higgins said: "He leaves a legacy of outstanding leadership of a group of players of many diverse talents, which he moulded into the successful team that captured the imagination of the nation."

Hello Donal Cozzie.

Looks like, due to a change in Irish law in 2004, I could be an Irish citizen. Da was born on the island of Ireland, doesn’t matter that this was in the Six Counties. Am applying for a passport.

Another problem with bigger clubs are that there are too many «big» names there and Bielsa football will not suit them. He requires extreme hight tempo for 90 minutes and many of the players will not be able to do that and the trouble will start in the club and then it’s easy to kick a manger than 5-6 big players.

And I am not sure if he can succeed with this philosophy in PL where the players might get tired buried out by mid-season. But the most important now is to get those 7 points to secure the spot in PL.

Why? They're not threatening Leeds, who will qualify directly. Preston can only hope to make the playoffs, if that.

Lol, I confused Preston with Brentford, sorry, my bad!

So its Brentford and not Preston who are in extreme good form? What a shame.

Yes Brentford have won 7 matches on the trot. Just seen the results and Preston haven’t won a single match since re-start.

Preston North End are one of the founding members of the football league and are a very historic club. Historically however they've perennially been a solid second tier side. They hold a record actually thats pretty incredible. I believe they've made 5 championship play-offs and lost every single one which is certainly some kind of record.

On recent years they've followed a very similar pattern, long stretches of very solid form leaving them in the Top 6 about two thirds through the season, only to falter badly at the end due to their small budget and limited resources.

Home ground is Deepdale and is fairly decent, holds about 28k if I believe. Tom Finney is their greatest ever player and in recent years I suppose their more recent players would be the likes of David Nugent. David Moyes became a high profile manager due to his time there.

I'm in bits ahead of this Swansea game. With WBA drawing yesterday, its pivotal we avoid defeat. If we cam manage a win its absolutely massive considering WBA play Fulham midweek.

Nervy nervy game. we've been outstanding lately but Swansea are a bogey side and are in the play off mix.

Unbelievable unbelievable unbelievable.

Pablo Hernandez, an absolute gem of a footballer (senior Spain cap to boot).

That was possibly the most important goal in the last twenty five years of this club considering the consequences of not going up now.

Absolutely immense

So in a nutshell, we need a multibillionaire with a keen sense of history who suffers from OCD so that Preston being the only former top flight champions never to have made it to the Premier League bothers him or her enough to make them buy the club and ease the club’s monetary woes.

I tick two of three boxes. I’ll be back when I have a few billion to spare. Watch this space.

PL, here we come!:tahir2

Congrats to my fellow Leeds Utd fans!

Championship: Leeds United promoted to Premier League after 16-year absence

Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League after 16 years away.

Their place in the top flight for next season was confirmed by West Brom's 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on Friday.

Leeds will now be crowned champions if Brentford do not beat Stoke on Saturday or the Whites then take a point from Sunday's visit to Derby County.

Argentine Marcelo Bielsa has led the Yorkshire side to promotion in his second season in charge after finishing third in the Championship in 2018-19.

Even allowing for the enforced break because of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been a campaign where Leeds have never really looked like repeating mistakes of previous seasons and they have not been outside the top two since November.

They had seemed set to win promotion last season only for back-to-back defeats by Wigan and Brentford to leave them third behind Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, before a dramatic 4-3 play-off semi-final defeat by Derby.

After that setback, fans could have been forgiven for fearing the worst about the future of Bielsa and the talented group of players he had assembled.

But he opted to remain with the club and together they have reaped the rewards.

Legendary club. Back where it belongs. Congrats to all the fans who have stuck through the heartbreaks. Well deserved in the end.

I'm a lifelong Man City fan, but my mum is from Birstall and I've been anxiously following Leeds' battle to get back where they belong.

And from the time Huddersfield took the lead last night I've been teary, so happy for the long-suffering Leeds fans. Especially after the deaths of Big Jack, Cherry and Hunter.

We went through the same drops to the 2nd and 3rd tiers a decade earlier, and Sunderland are going through the same thing now.

Congratulations to Leeds. (And I wish Sir Marcus Rashford hadn't deleted his own tweet to that effect).

Oh man, Huddersfield just gave Brentford an amazing present.

Just need to win at stoke and home at Barnsley now.

Can’t believe I might actually get a chance to support my local team in the PL.
