KARACHI: Former skipper Salman Butt, who has the most number of centuries against India for Pakistan, has urged the current crop to enjoy the game rather than take any pressure when the two arch-rivals clash on Sunday at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

“The pressure in the game against India always makes players lose their concentration, but the players need to keep in mind that Pakistan have the superior head-to-head record against India,” Salman told The Express Tribune.

Salman, who has scored five ODI centuries in 21 games against India, feels a win against India will leave the players in good stead to qualify for the semi-finals.

“If they manage to get a good start by winning against India, then that will boost them mentally for their next matches,” he said. “If you compare the teams, then the match against South Africa is actually the tougher one.”

The 32-year-old said the players need to ensure that they enjoy themselves out there in the middle, since the pressure may weigh them down if they don’t.

“They should not take any kind of pressure,” he said. “Instead, they should just enjoy the game and play like they normally do. There is of course added pressure since the entire world is watching but they must know that all of Pakistan is behind them.”

Pakistan have several new faces in their squad — with the likes of Fahim Ashraf, Shadab Khan and Fakhar Zaman all unknown commodities — but Salman feels blending youthful exuberance and experience has always been Pakistan’s modus operandi.

“India have the more experienced side but Pakistan has always gone with a combination of senior and junior players; that seems to work for them in difficult situations,” he said.

Salman added that the seniors need to step up to the plate and the juniors should be even more motivated since they can become overnight heroes. “We have number of experienced players who can guide the team to a good position during the match, while the juniors have a golden opportunity to perform against India and make a good impression in the cricketing world,” he said.

The former skipper also had words of praise for new skipper Sarfraz Ahmed. “He gets really involved in the game, which is good to see,” he said. “It is always a test of the captain in pressure matches against India but I think the whole team is with Sarfraz.”

He was always an intelligent guy - upsoss, for once, decided to become too intelligent.

India vs SA and Aus vs Eng will be the two very good games before semi finals. Everything else would be one sided games.

He has a point! SA looking good atm.

"The match against South Africa is actually the tougher one” : Salman Butt -

You don't have to be brain surgeon to make that deduction

South africa will crumble if they have a must win game against india or pak.. not sure abt the fixture though

We need to utilize our spin bowling. Need to use Immad wasim , Shohaib Malik & Shadab wisely.

Only if this guy was as intelligent as he sounds.....

Corruption and imtelligence do not have a direct or indirect relation.

Butt had the eye for talent. He handled pressure bettee than many others and He was improving both as a Captain aswell as batsman. It was very terrible what he did to pakistan & himself.

Think if Butt hadn't ruined his career what would have been the notion for tommorows game vs india. Butt with probably 10 hundreds vs india if not more, asif with all his accuracy and penetration and amir at the peak of his career. Pity how a brainfade of a few seconds changes the history (future).

Hell no

India and Australia are the two toughest teams to beat in any big tournament for any team.

Just saw his latest interview, he was even specifically asked do you think you missed out on selection because of the PSL Spot Fixing scandal?

He clearly is getting frustrated and took his frustration out on Amir and the selectors saying that this reasoning is illogical and inhuman that they should continue to suffer because of what happens worldwide.

It's mind-boggling to me how a world class player like Salman Butt is not in the playing XI for Pakistan, but non-performers like Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik are!!! What a disgrace!!

He hasnt said anything remarkable here. SA is a good side but i feel that if you negotiate imran tahir, they can be beaten because they dont have another option to fall back on during those middle over which form the major chunk of the innings.

Morris isnt exactly someone who would make you shiver in your boots, neither is wayne parnell. Rabada is the only other threat and on these flat wickets, his couple of overs in the middle part of innings, should be managable.

Overs 15 to 40 is where you can beat SA while batting. And against them you have to bat first somehow to get an advantage.

Match against number 1 side is clearly tougher , at least on paper than match against number 3 side.

By that logic, match between the number 1 and 3 sides is the real marqee match of the group and not this overhyped match between number 3 and number 8 teams.

Babar azam are you feeling ok?

India and South Africa both have world class batsman so easy win against Pakistan on flat pitches :)

After losing both matches Pakistan should give chance to all youngster against Sri Lanka

Babar azam are you feeling ok?

I might be fear mongerering but I think Babar could prove to be a minnow basher... Salman butt used to score centuries around the world, and tons of them.... anyways we might see today how he fairs against india in England. Hopefully he's good

This +1

He could have been a very fine captain for us if he didn't sell out...

Aek woh bhi waqt tha jub Salman Butt India ke khilaaf centuriyaan marta tha... aur abka waqt dekho Azhar and Shehzad

Africa has always been overrated in short format

We need Salman Butt back. He's far better player than the rubbish openers we have.

I doubt Salman would have had much success against the current crop of Indian bowlers. They are much much better than the Indian bowlers Salman played, especially the Indian fast bowlers are now at a totally different level.

I always liked Salman Butt when he was playing. I would still want him in the test side.
