Henry Kissinger (Nobel Peace Prize), without a single shadow of a doubt in my mind. Who would be your pick?

Henry Kissinger (Nobel Peace Prize), without a single shadow of a doubt in my mind. Who would be your pick?

The man in whose name the award is named.

The one who discovered explosives.

Henry Kissinger (Nobel Peace Prize), without a single shadow of a doubt in my mind. Who would be your pick?

There have been several peace prize awardees who don't really deserve it. Yasser Arafat, Henry Kissinger, Shimon Perez, Yitzhak Rabin, Barack Obama and Malala Yousufzai are notable mentions.

There have been several of the science prize awardees who don't deserve it as well. They just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and got their names included in the work done by someone else. A prime example is James Watson, the guy who shared the medicine prize with Francis Crick for the DNA structure in 1962. Most of the actual work was done by Crick, and many ideas were borrowed from other scientists at that time. Watson's contribution wasn't significant at all.

There are several others too. The worst part is that there are also several who deserve the Nobel and never got it.
It's one of the reasons I got frustrated with my scientific career, and eventually left it. The world of science is full of such half-wits who rode on the shoulders of others.

yaser arafat and obama.

Gandhi deserved it, especially because he died for Pakistan's rights that many Pakistanis dont know

Many desis here will say Malala, but the thing is many dont know about Malala's work and they have been fed with a false narrative about her by the Pakistani conservative media. This is the same media that bashes Sharmeen Obaid and defends anything wrong we commit against India under the guise of terrorism.

Obama but many of my countrymen say it is Malala. A lot of Pakistanis do not know that Malala was already a well-known education activist long before she was awarded the Nobel Prize. She challenged the TTP when the militant outfit took over Swat and closed down girls' schools. She used to write to the BBC, describing what it was like to live under the TTP in Swat.

Whenever there is an online news article about Malala, 99.9% of the comments underneath are abusive! Too frustrating!

Has to be the Pakistani Greta Thunberg (Malala). Up there as the most irritating and anti Pakistan person on the planet.

just so you know, had greta thunberg been listened to, the flooding damage to our country would had not been as bad.

As for Malala you are refering to, she as a child stood up to terrorist. This was something the Pakistan army and the Pakistan ISI failed to do.

WHen Taliban stopped education in an area, she was the only voice and that too of a child. Taliban couldn't kill her.

I wonder what you would had done at that young age if you had a gun on your head

She was a little girl and bravely stood up for education and defied the Taliban. Does any one of us adults have such guts?

It has to be Barack Obama. He was barely in office (2009) and won the Nobel Peace Prize despite not even completing a year in office (9 months), and in the midst of the financial crash.

He won the prize for simply being the first ever black US President, nothing else. It was a token award.

One thing i liked about Obama's peace prize was that his political rival, John Mccain, came out and congratulated him and even said it was a proud moment for their country that their president won the award.

That shows how united people can be. Something like this would never happen in Pakistan

Think the problem with some is that they cannot see a woman succeed in this world.

The USA is very patriotic. Puts Pakistanis to shame

Plenty here don’t like to see assertive, opinionated and clever women, especially young women. They feel threatened and deny the young women their agency.

McCain was a good guy. I wish he had got the GOP nomination in 2000 instead of W.

not anymore i suppose. There was a time when US politicians seemed pretty united on important issues but since the advent of twitter, no country really stands united...Politicians as well as their followers across the spectrums have become vile.

Shuttle diplomacy

USA vs China - helped tone down things.

Even our Mr. Bhutto had a hand in it, apparently.

i think he was given the award for Vietnam.

But yes pakistan did play a part in the US and China diplomacy. Pakistan even had a fake Kessinger roaming around the country :))

Gotta be Rabin, Ehud Barak, and Obama.

No Israeli pm or pres should ever be given a peace prize. Its like giving a dodgy car salesman business of the year. Total fraud.

As for Malala. Totally agree with some of the sentiment. I feel she wasn't a worthy winner for this particular prize but perhaps a different one.

With regards to the assumptions that we don't like to see strong assertive women..I frankly find that racist and isulting. Frankly an islamaphobic slur especially used against brown Muslim men.

The legend that is Baba Edhi wasn't given one but look at some of the guys that were.

edhi couldn't fall in that criteria i think.

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

I dont know if philanthropist can be given this award?

The criteria could have applied to him on many occasions, literally every year. Edhi represented everything good,we as Muslims aspire to and they couldn't stomach that. They gave it Malala, and none of that criteria applies to her either.

wait? what does this have to do with muslim? Malala was a kaffir?

im not too sure why edhi never got it, but Malala was well deserved. The only issue she belongs from the liberal side that many of you hate.

Nobel Prize has lost its meaning. I do not take it seriously anymore.

How someone like Henry Kissinger gets it is beyond me.

There is a difference between nobel prize in science vs nobel peace prize. Two different things all together. And yes some people on this board have issues with strong women. Once you challenge them on it , they run away ….

She is the type of Muslim that fits their narrative. On nio planet did she deserve it ahead of Baba Edhi.

what narrative? what is their narrative?

So you dont even personally know the girl and you are juding her to be a bad muslim? WHy? Only because she is liberal?

what if she prays 5 times a day?

like seriously, now you are gonna judge other people whether they are proper muslim or not..

No wonder muslims are negatively represented in west with such people with such mentality.

Unless you live under a rock you will that Their narrative is that all Muslims are mad nutters and its what Kipling called the Whites man burden to civilise us. Malala was a nondescript, absolutely nothing but Baba Edhi is a muslim legend and did more humanitarian work and helped to spread good but who do they chose?

She can pray and be pious, its not for me to judge but she fitted their narrative that Islam was backward and she was fighting the evil. Baba Edhi didn't fit this narrative

I don’t think she wrote the book herself , but everything in it was true. Pakistan is ranked third lowest iin the world when it comes to gender c inequality. So what she says is true.

Who was he?

He was Kissinger's body double. The US announced a visit to Pakistan for Kissinger. The real Kissinger went to China for secret negotiations while the Fake Kissinger arrived in Pakistan and did some faux diplomacy events to show off to the US media

The idea was to prevent the US media from knowing about Kissinger's secret visit to China !

Forget that, the wife of the guy (Alfred Nobel) who started the Nobel prize, ran off with a maths professor. This is why there is no Nobel prize for Mathematics.

The prize itself is built on infidelity and mysoginist.

Forget the peace prize. But the prize in science or literature is the most prestigious. . Its the hugest honor.

She fitted a narrative that was being sold, I am not a hter of her, she was attacked by the final that is the what commonly called the TTP. But the fact remains that Baba Edhi l, an absolute legend was ignored by the same organisation. I am not a celebrity fan boy and never have Bern but Baba ji came to town and I didn't go and see him in person and thank him for his amazing work. It's a great regret.

What is your version of "gender inequality"?

I think the problem is you seem to have a different definition of it.

I think most of the world has the same definition I am quoting UNs ranking.

I think its quite obvious, according to liberals like him, a patriarchal society is a gender inequal society and a feminist society is a gender equal society.

Nobel Peace prize.. is not the same as every Nobel prize, maybe the thread title should be changed?

Nobel peace prize is totally different from Nobel prize in science. One is more political , other is based om life time of real work and achievements/discoveries.
Only three muslims have gotten the prize in science
1: Dr Adbus Salam
2: Aziz Sancar
3: Ahmed Zewail

As usual a total lie. He was never married.

Their? They?

That narrative belongs to the identitarian English right, not the British liberals, who are educated and pluralist thinkers.

It should say fitna , not final. Auto correct working wrongly

Obama won it less than a year into his presidency for fostering international relations, "especially" with the Muslim world. He then proceeded to execute more drone strikes on the Muslim world than any other :)))

I don't think the Nobel Peace Prize should have existed in the first place. But since it does, my pick is Henry Kissinger. The rest of the Nobel Pize categories have been bestowed upon pure geniuses.

Nobel peace prize is not taken seriously. Nobel orize in science is very prestigious and taken very seriously

Nobel peace prize is whole load of horse crap. Heck even a guy like Obama got it who bombed half of middle east. So much for 'peace'. Also Malala got it for pandering to West's ideologies of poor, oppressed girl fighting for her right to education. Think I read Malala wanted to be a doctor, somebody tell the west that ratio of female to male medical students in Pakistan is 80-20.

Nobel prize for scientific advancement are truly well deserved.

Lével of education between men and women in Pakistan is massive. Gender inequality is massive. But correct peace prize is a joke. Scribe prize is very prestigious and well deserved

Malala getting the prize did not stop Edhi from receiving the honor. In fact both Malala and her father nominated Edhi. He just isn't as well recognized globally and people are unaware of the amazing work he has done in Pakistan.

This was an illogical and ill-informed argument. Frankly idiotic if I was to put it kindly. The truth is that you're offended that a woman stood up to people of a similar mindset to yours and was recognized for it.

I meant the difference in level of education

I don’t think the book is written by malala without help ( not uncommon) how we the book describes the Pakistani mindset very well.

There is a separate thread for Malala.

Don't discuss her here.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov for their discovery and development of quantum dots.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden on Wednesday.

These tiny particles quantum dots have unique properties and now spread their light from television screens and LED lamps. They catalyse chemical reactions and their clear light can illuminate tumour tissue for a surgeon.

The academy says in its website, Chemistry was the most important science for Alfred Nobel’s own work. The development of his inventions as well as the industrial processes he employed were based upon chemical knowledge. Chemistry was the second prize area that Nobel mentioned in his will.

Congrats to all 3 of them!

Imprisoned Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.
Announcing the decision, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said Ms Mohammadi, 51, was honoured for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.
Her struggle has come at a "tremendous personal cost", committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said.
Ms Mohammadi is currently serving a 10-year jail term in Iran's notorious Evin prison in the capital, Tehran.

Iran has responded by accusing the Nobel committee of meddling while the Foreign Ministry condemned the awarding of the peace prize as "biased" and in line with "the interventionist and anti-Iran policies of some European countries".
State news agency IRNA said giving the prize to a "person who has been convicted under the laws of a country and is currently serving a prison sentence can only be called politicising the concept of human rights and acting in a meddling manner".

At Friday's ceremony in Oslo, Ms Reiss-Andersen said the prestigious award was given to Ms Mohammadi for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all".
She began her address with the words "woman - life - freedom" - a reference to the motto of recent mass protests sweeping Iran.
She went on to describe the prize as recognition of the hundreds of thousands of Iranians who have demonstrated over the past year against the "theocratic regime's policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women" - a movement headed, she said, by the new Nobel prize winner.
Millions of Iranians will be cheering this award along with human rights activists around the world. The Nobel committee decision also sends a very strong signal of disapproval to the Iranian authorities.
At the ceremony, Ms Reiss-Andersen also urged Iran to release Ms Mohammadi from jail so she could attend the prize ceremony in December.
"If the Iranian authorities make the right decision they will release her so she can be present to receive this honour, which is what we primarily hope for."

But it seems highly unlikely that the activist will actually be able to pick up her prize.
The UN said the award highlighted "the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration to the world".

Ms Mohammadi has revealed harrowing details of how women are being abused in Tehran's Evin prison
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian national who spent time in Evin jail with Ms Mohammadi until she was released in March 2022, said she was pleased for her friend.
"It makes me cry. She did so much for all of us in Evin. Narges is an inspiration and a pillar to the women in the female ward in Evin for her fearless fight against violations of women's rights, the use of solitary confinement and execution in the judicial system in Iran.
"This award belongs to every single Iranian woman who, one way or another, has been and remains a victim of injustice in Iran."
Ms Mohammadi's son Ali Rahmani, whom she has not seen in eight years, was in class when he found out.

He told the BBC: "I was very happy and felt proud of my mum.
"It took a few moments for me to come to terms with it so in the beginning I was just very happy and proud of my mum just like I am always, like yesterday and the day before that. This award belongs to the Iranian people. It is because of the protests."
Abram Paley, the acting US envoy on Iran, also hailed Ms Mohammadi's courage, while French President Emmanuel Macron said she was a "freedom fighter who each time faced the reality... the cruelty of this regime".
As well as her current jail term, Ms Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison. She has also been sentenced to 154 lashes - it is unclear whether that punishment has been carried out.
Last December, she wrote from prison to give the BBC harrowing details of how Iranian women detained in demonstrations were being sexually and physically abused.
She said such assaults had become more common during the protests, triggered by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
The unrest later spread across the country, with demands ranging from more freedoms to an overthrow of the state.
Images of Iranian women defiantly setting their headscarves on fire captivated the world. However the Iranian authorities have brutally cracked down on the protests and they have largely subsided.
Ms Mohammadi is deputy head of the Defenders of Human Rights Center.
Speaking to the BBC in 2020, Ms Mohammadi explained why she was dedicating herself to advancing women's rights in Iran.
"In my opinion, supporting human rights efforts and actions aimed at achieving freedom and justice anywhere in the world, whether in Iran or any other country, is very important and very heart-warming," she said.

Henry Kissinger and Barack Obama who are war criminals also have this prize.

A western propaganda tool, nothing more.

I have no issues with her winning, but there is an obvious agenda behind these awards. If you challenge any govt opposed to the West, you are a hero but if you challenge any Western interests, it's an "internal matter" and Western govts will happily help in your murder or incarceration.

No PTI supporter or human rights female advocate who has been beaten, incarcerated and abused fighting for justice and freedom will get this prize. Reason the Yanks are fully behind the abuse and torture.

We have small minded people thinking this prize is genuine lol

Sorry to say it's Malala Yousufzai for me, i dont think she deserves a nobel prize.

Just like the woman today, Malala won because you suited an agenda. Edhi didn't, and he achieved a 1000 times more than vast majority of the winners

I appreciate the fact that you acknowledge Gandhi ji.

Sadly many Pakistanis and 80% Bharatiyas don’t speak nicely of him but he was a fellow unlike anyone else.

Other recipient may be underwhelming or insignificant but Kissinger is an actual villain.

Nobel is poorer for having him be a awardee.

I will take 2 names that I have heard of.
1: Malala Yousafzai (Nobel Peace Prize 2014)
2: James Watson (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1962)
