After going through the heartbreak of Mohali I waited year on year for Pakistan to overcome India in an ICC tournament. Each occasion resulted in embarrassing failure and more disappointment to the point that one believed that it was possible for Pakistan to topple India at the grand stage.

The victory at the Oval proved that the Indian team was mortal and could be beaten.

The victory at the Oval proved that Pakistan could do it at the grand stage.

The victory against India in the final laid to rest the ghosts of Johannesburg 2007 and the ghosts of Mohali 2011.

Hopefully this victory will give the team the confidence to break the streak in 2019 and to turn the tide against our neighbours.

Your thoughts?

I never felt any pain at mohali.
it was a mediocre team.

I question your passion for Pakistan cricket if you didn't feel pain after a WC semi final loss against India, in India. That too from a winning position.

Indian team was exposed by Amir.

Amir proved that once you get past the Top 3 of the Indian batting line up, the rest can't even score 150 runs together.

None of the other teams were able to dispatch Rohit/Kohli/Dhawan in such an emphatic style like Amir did. At least 2 out of Top 3 performed in all the matches leading up to the finals. Indian team looked strong as the middle and lower order's mediocrity was masked by the Top 3's exploits.

Funnily, our selectors still believe the middle and lower middle order of Yuvraj/Dhoni/Jadeja/Ashwin are still integral part of our ODI and T20 set up. They still persisted with them in WI series

Wc is much bigger than ct so the pain of losing at mohali will only be revenged by beating ind in a wc knockout. But the ct final was revenge for the t20 wc final in 2007.

Maybe 2019 WC final

mohali was the most most painful defeat
which haunted me for 6 damn years

i genuinely believed that we were in a winning position
restricting a batting power house Indian team to 260 was no joke
it should ve been a cake walk for us in past we chased 300 plus at mohali
but collapse was very painful

my wounds are healed
18th june fathers day our arrogant enemy was humbled and humiliated
their loud mouth fans are silenced and shamed
they will dare not to argue with us
people like sehwag rishi raju shivastiv and thousand of fans predicting it a practice match got a kick in a**
bolti bandhhhhhhh

yes my wounds are healed
sarfaraz made me proud
love u team Pakistan
love u Pakistan
Pakistan zindabad

The loss after mohali, i was thinking waiting for india to play Pakistan next which was the asia cup in 2012, for me if they won that game i would have felt happy, but they ended up losing, after with india consistanly winning agaisnt us in icc event matches, i just gave up hope lol, but after the champions trophy win in the final i feel that i can put that ghost to rest lol. Lets Hope Pakistan can end the streak in 2019 as well.

not only Mohali but also wounds of Johannesburg T20 Final 2007 , Bangalore 1996 and centurion 2003 are also healed
despite having a huge margin in head to head contest losing to India in crucial matches and WC matches was always painful but trust me that mental block is over its finished. infact thrashing of Indian Team by 180 runs will create massive massive mental block in Indian team and their fans
This defeat will haunt India for ever

to take revenge they need another India vs Pakistan Final in some ICC tournament
Till then let them enjoy Fathers day every year :D

To me, more painful than Mohali was the 1996 WC QF defeat. India had no business even coming close to us as a team, yet we lost. We were far far superior.

Mohali was expected as India were better, though we did great to restrict them to 260 odd. Should have won the game from there.

My view is that most fans who think Pakistan can win against India when it matters, between the era of 2004 to 2016, don't know their cricket very well.
There is a generation of mentally weak Pakistani cricketers who have represented the national team during there periods

Indeed the sight of seeing Indian flags fly high and hearing "Chak De Indiaa" in the background in Mohali after the last Pakistani wicket fell was a depressing sight for Pakistani fans.

But at the Oval it was "Dil Dil Pakistan" playing in the background during the fall of indian wickets. That coupled with the sight of Indian supporters rushing to leave the stadium truly symbolised the redemption for the defeat Mohali.

Pakistan had finally beaten India when the stakes were high and when it actually mattered. Mohali 2011 was forgiven. Johannesburg 2007 was forgiven. The 73-50 head to head finally had a meaningful win in it.

I still get goosebumps watching the highlights of Aamir destroying the Indian top order.

Most painful of defeat we have had since 97 defeat in Chennai. In last 20 yrs we hardly lost any important games. Lot of great memories as an indian fan in the last 20 yrs.

Are people serious?..

No victory over Australia in the CT or WC pool stages will make up for Melbourne 2015.

I cried a lot after that Mohali defeat

Lekin bhai ne 18th June ko daba party ki. Best day ever.

Saare zakham bhar gaye

Some folks are just consoling themselves.
I would trade 100 CTs for the 2015 WC. The CT is considered a practice run for the WC for a lot of teams. No fuss was made in the media when NZ and Aus were knocked out in the group stages.

The demons of 2015 will be exercised if

A) We knock out Aus in the Semis and win the WC

or

B) We beat Aus in a WC Final

No CT wins or T20 WCs factor into this anyway whatsoever.

Nope.

That defeat will be avenged by beating India in a WC knockout tournament and going on to win the thing.

2019 WC?? When groups will be announced for WC?

Mohali pain will always be there since I think we should have won the game. India did not play too well. Pakistan played horribly though. But overall though, that Pakistan team was never that great so I guess I will take both of the events exclusively.

The closest Pakistan came to going through in the 2011 semi-final was when it was pouring cats and dogs the previous night over Chandigarh.

Pakistan had qualified higher in their group so a washout meant they would have qualified.

I'm sure that was the scariest prospect for most Indian fans regarding that game, rather than anything that happened in the 100 overs themselves.

It can never replace Mohali. Pakistan's team let Indian rule over that day. We were the only one who could have stopped them.

We lost it in 2010, not 2011. Had trio been playing, this game was going to be same as CT final.

Whats more sad is that we were on the way, we could have won that game. We were going fine when Hafeez was batting. And then we forced collasped the entire XI along with slow play.

But it helps to know that It was Tendulkar's final WC win, he deserved to win one after all those decades.

The only way Pakistan can heal those wounds is to dominate for years along with winning WC beating India.

add the rest of the WC matches and Benson and Hedges final losses to the list while you are at it :)))

But it is cute to see Pakistani fans not fall back on 73-52 ... strange things happen when you win a ICC match against India :))

The sight of the Indian supporters leaving the Oval and the whole mauka mauka campaign falling on its face = redemption for me

I find this thread slightly undermining Pakistan's Cricket superiority over India. In One Dayers we all know it is 73-52 in Favor of Pakistan and 12-9 in Test Cricket, while in Field Hockey it is 82-57 in Pakistan's favor. You guys will not know that back in 1982 Pakistan's Hockey team won the World cup on Indian Soil during Indira Gandhi's era. Sharjah 86 Miandad's six in Australasia Cup final and 1994 Australasia Cup final wins over India were very significant. Pakistan's Test series win in India (1987) was arguably our greatest. In 1999 technically pakistan again beat india in india 2 Test wins and Delhi loss. This ICC Champions Trophy win is icing on cake. Bangalore 96 QF ( Wasim Akram did not play, he was 29 and was at his peak) and ICC deducted 1 over from Pakistan's batting which made life difficult. 2011 mohali sf ( Aamir/Asif/Salman butt were banned). And with Akmals you can not win. 2007 final was painful because Misbah choked it. So 2017 CT win has erased ghosts of 2007 Final. Mohali's revenge is still pending.

during the Mohali game India were favorites... but the t20 world cup final in 2007 is the one that still is more painful since we had the game and then lost it

Mohali was painful. I was on holiday in Dubai at the time. The pain was enhanced by the Indian celebrations afterwards.

For me- the ct completely healed the pain of Mohali. The absolute phainty was an added bonus.

I can assure u Indians won'r forget this however much they belittle the ct.

Indian fans had taken it as a complete given that India would roll over Pakistan in the final given the mauka mauka campaigns that were running at the time.

Hence to see them shut their mouths and leave the stadium in droves was a great sight.
I am sure the defeat stung and shocked many Indian fans who did not see it coming.

Mohali is forgiven remember the Oval!!!

I don't dwell on losses because they are part of the game. Victories are to be celebrated. As long as the team puts up a fight and plays well, losses don't hurt.

Yes. It took me some time to get over Mohali but now after CT win there hasnt been a day passed in which I didnt watch CT related videos. Thank You Sarfraz, Mickey and they young team :)

Seriously i swear as a passionate cricket fan. There was not even 50 percent atmosphere or craze during champions trophy as we have in world cup in india or all over the world. We won champions trophy in 2013. it hardly mattered to us. And we beat pakistan in league that too hardly mattered. It was not painful defeat . If ypu guys had won in 2011, 2003 or 2007. India wud have been in coma then. You have no idea about world cup wins because you have never tasted it.

Mohali was an expected defeat. I wasn't pained. The defeat that was the most painful was the 1996 World Cup quarter final. That Pakistan team was going to win the WC and defend the title. But it was defeated in the quarter final. Infact, i would go on to say that if Aamir Sohail kept it cool, we would've won the match.

Yeah totally, it seems to be a case of us always throwing it away from a commanding position rather than the opposition actually outplaying us as was the case in 96 and Mohali.

Good point. Pak fans brush that defeat under the carpet as India didn't win the cup. But actually it was a strong pak lineup, playing in subcontinent and final was scheduled at home in Lahore. Pak could have easily done what India did in 2011 had they won that game.

The Bangalore game was lost when the target went above 280. In the Mohali semi final, Pakistan did well to restrict India. Pakistan looked to be well on course until Hafeez threw his wicket away and then the rest of the batting got strangled.

I don't believe in this one match eases the pain of another. Just like that defeat for India will be a tough pill to swallow.

After 10 overs in their chase, pak needed 180 in 40 overs with all 10 wickets in hand. Much better equation than 200+ they had to get with 9 wickets in hand in 40 overs in mohali.

Are you sure it wast painful? The only reason the league match win over us wasnt celebrated by indians was because everyone was already expecting the result. All my Indian colleagues here in Melbourne were pretty embarrassed not sure how you can deny the pain of a final defeat in a major ICC tournament.

Over the last decade , it has been the Dhoni dominance that has kept away any hope for us. Now with Dhoni being swept aside by Kholi and us getting probably the best tactian since Wasim akram, i believe our days of dominance are going to grow again. The 73-52 would soon become 100-52 inshallah over the next decade now!

And according to your logic, all the other 72 wins we have against india were just non-consequential matches? Or are you claiming your 13 wins in WC are greater than those 72 wins Pak has against India?

That argument has been settled a long time ago in favor of big matches .... nobody will even remember those bilateral matches a few months later (Unless something spectacular happens in the match for example a Tied match) . Whereas I will forever remember Mohali S/F even though cricket quality wise it was a poor match.

So true, people remember the big moments... not some inconsequential bilateral or Sharjah Cup Matches...

This Champions Trophy victory will remain etched in memory just like Bangalore, just like Mohali, just like Johannesburg
