The sight of Virat Kohli probably donning his pads one last time in ODI World Cup for that shot at glory makes me sad and happy at the same time. I grew up watching him bat over the last 10 years and I dont deny that I might be a bit biased towards him as he is my favorite cricketer of all time. His discipline, perseverance and attitude is something that is rare to see in any cricketer, let alone an Indian one.

I remember in one Test English summer, his reputation was in ruins. He couldn't buy a run. Some people said he will never be a Test player. However, the next English summer he tweaked his game enough to be counted among the runs. That told of his intent and grittiness.

In another time, he stroked the best bowler in the world Malinga for 24 runs in one over as India bullied the 330 odd target in around 30 odd overs. In that day I knew a star was being born. I didn't know at that time how good he would become, but as the years flew by, the records kept tumbling.

But this article is not about one man, though it might seem as such. This is about 11 players who defied all the odds and reached the final of the ODI World Cup and are on the brink of success. Just one game is remaining in their arsenal to prove to the world that they are top tier team. The doubters have gradually faded away and even the staunchest of the critics have somehow accepted that it can't be a coincidence that India keeps winning with the same set of 11 players.

I blame the Asia Cup for this. Before the Asia Cup, I saw an average Indian team who might hit the semi finals of the World Cup if they get lucky and then they would definitely bow out versus a stronger England or New Zealand or even Australia. They just didn't have it in them. The group stage match vs Pakistan where India lost 4 wickets for 60 odd, just reaffirmed my belief that this team was not that good even though they managed to hit 260 odd. Shaheen thought they were afraid of him. Babar thought they couldn't play the Pakistani bowlers. And for a minute it did seem, like an ordinary team.

Till the second match. If almost stung by the comments, Rohit and company decided to attack Shaheen over a match that spanned 2 days. The way Pakistani bowling attack was flogged to all corners was disheartening to see as a Pakistani fan. Even we made excuses about scheduling and how the game played over 2 days as a single ODI. Nevertheless, India won the match. A strange thing happened then. India realized that attacking cricket and not fearing bowlers would give them dividends. They decimated Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup.

The rest was history. A World Cup tournament where so far no one comes even close to India in batting or bowling is an amazing sight. The last time a team was so dominant was the Aussie team of 2003 and 2007 which had Mcgrath, Warne, Ponting and Gilchrist as ATGs.

What will make victory sweeter for Indian fans is that the doubters are dwindling every single day. They have to win the World Cup against all odds even coming this far. People have doubted Kohli as a choker calling him a Chokli. A tag he is well on his way to removing. There were tags of Nohit which are comfortably being removed as Rohit has settled into an ultra aggressive opener. His starts have galvanized Indian team into formidable totals batting first and easier chases because of the pace he bats. Chokrah is respectfully finally being callled as Bumrah.

There were other elements at play that India had to answer. People complained about lack of Pakistani fans, the cleaning facilities, the crowd, the behavior of police etc. The fact India team has not let those things deter them from the march towards the end is commendable. They could easily have capitulated to the pressure on the even of NZ match when people accused them of "fixing pitches". The pressure on a set of 11 players who have given their heart and soul to win the match and to be accused of cheating is possibly endless. But they still nullified that by scoring nearly 400 runs to ensure that no one would talk about "pitches helping India only" as was being peddled before the match.

You have to be blind not to admire team India. The determination, the way Rohit has led his troops is totally top class. Indian team has not made one controversial statement during this entire campaign and just chiseled on trying to win the entire tournament.

As a Pakistani fan, I begrudgingly respect that India is a better team in this World Cup.

As a Kohli fan, it would be a fitting end to his ODI career if he scores one last century chasing or batting first and lifts the World Cup for India tomorrow.

That indeed would be the best end for the greatest ODI player the World has ever seen.

I agree with our first part. Everyone thought Rahul Dravid and co will screw up one more tournament and bow out. Didn't have the confidence due to the alarming decline in form of players post-COVID. India had injury concerns. No Bumrah for a while. No idea how he would do it. No idea how KL Rahul and Iyer would bat after injury. Only Gill, Siraj, and Kuldeep were the hope. With Shami not being the scheme of things in the ODI setup as India needed an extra batsman at 8, we had no hope. Also Jadeja is not well-liked by fans at no.7 as a batsman. India had a lot of holes. So as a fan my hope was getting to semi final.

The different bowlers tried in different series with A ,B ,C, D teams were experiments. Dravid and Rohit knew Bumrah, Siraj ,Shami, KL Rahul, Iyer would always be first choices but they were building bench strength while the main bolwers were working it out in NCA on fitness and recovery while practicing line and length because they had a security that their places in team were no at risk.
Bench strength exists as a result of this experiemnt. Players like Tilak Verma, Ruturaj, Jaiswal, SkY, Kishan are all waiting in the wings for their time to come

Will miss Kohli for sure… feels like yesterday he was a young lad who was saying goodbye to his role model Sachin after the 2011 final… and now he’s in the same position- if anything he has surpassed his hero in a little over 10 years stats and performance wise. That’s crazy when you out yourself in his shoes. Must be a surreal feeling.

Imagine looking up to Elon Musk and becoming the next big pioneer within a decade.

Reminds me of Tyson Fury’s dad naming him after Mike Tyson and him going on to become a Heavyweight champion and being acknowledged by Mike as a legend.

Hope he doesn’t retire. Personally don’t think he will. He has plenty of fire left in him.

Favorite batsman of the post 2010 age for sure, and personal top 3 of all time.

Very well.written by OP. Unlike Tendulkar that went on to.play after world cup glory, Virat will probably retire from ODIs if India win the final. Especially if he scores runs. It would be the pinnacle of his career. I disagree that the attacking mindset of Rohit started after Asia cup game vs Pakistan. The seeds were laid after England gave a phainty to India in the T20 semi final last year. Rohit and Rahul's conservative batting at the top was one of the main reasons why India lost the world cup. India removed Rohit, Rahul and Kohli from the T20 team right after with Pandya at the helm. This is the last world cup and possibly the last ODI game for two of India's greatest heroes - Rohit and Kohli.

Kohli is not done yet. He was incredibly desperate from 2020 trying to get back into form and now that he's back, he's not going to give it up so soon. At the very least he'll play ODIs until CT 2025 and T20Is until next year's world cup.

But from losing an ODI series against Bangladesh just last year to becoming by far the best team in the world, it has been a pretty remarkable rise for the team. I certainly wasn't expecting this three months ago.

Don't think he will play ODI World Cup in 2027.

Sachin had some stunning ODI performances in the year leading up to the 2011 WC. So while he did chase WC glory, it's unfairly put - he chased it while more than meriting his spot.

Virat might continue. It's his best chance of overhauling 100 100s, though the number of ODIs we play might not be enough. He's not going to catch Sachin in Tests, so this is his best option.

He did merit his spot and he was chasing 100 hundreds. But it would have been befitting his legendary status if he left at his peak.

This India side was always good at full strength. But I dint think they would be this good to dominate every team. They still have 2 or 3 better players on bench that could easily slot in right now but obviously they have gone for experience.

India's road still has the final hurdle to cross. If they can beat Australia today in the final, this is when they will get the glory. Not yet.

Haha spoke to soon Dr. Sb , unfortunately India took the road to agony instead of glory

Lol the OP regularly calls our players mental midgets, stadpadders, softies etc always wants 'aggression' and 'mindset' then made the softest most cringey post about a rival team.
