There should be no compromise on fitness standards in international cricket

You can't expect athleticism from guys who are touching 40. The PCB needs to introduce proper bone scans and wrist tests to ensure players ages are accurately noted

They can't even make a proper lab in Pakistan, let alone bone scans and wrist tests. Age fudging in Pakistan cricket is something that is going on for decades and will continue as such.

All these guys must be carrying a body fat of atleast 25-30% which is extremely unprofessional for an athlete.

If anything they should have a criteria of having body fat tests and only have 6-12% margin which is what an athlete's body fat should be.

Anyone over than that shouldn't be around the squad unless he fixes it and gets it down in that region. Fitness in Pakistan has cost them in the field especially with players in all age groups being culprits.

Shahid Afridi speaking on TV

"I know a few players who were called by PCB to the High Performance Centre and their diet and training was looked after. However, at night, they used to quietly sneak out to eat burgers and pizzas. If they are not serious about their fitness despite the talent that they have, PCB can't keep an eye on them all the time."

Has to be Umar Akmal :))

Fitness is non negotiable.
Cricinfo analysts today postulated that BCCI selectors are not picking Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw for red/white ball national teams since they are overweight.

After getting established in team, maybe can get away with few pounds like Rohit/Pant but for youngsters trying to break in or cricketers trying to come back, fitness has to be top notch

Mickey Arthur kicked Sami Aslam out of the Pakistani team for this very reason. He caught him having Chicken Karhai in the room. To be fair, the Pakistani players have been raised their entire life on Pakistani food, to expect them to totally eliminate it is very difficult and unrealistic, they might be able to go on a diet for 2-3 weeks but they cannot sustain it indefinately.

Best to take a more practical and workable approach. Encourage the players to stick to a proper diet for 5-6 days a week, give them a cheat day, when they cheat, educate them on portion control and when they cheat, instruct them to work out extra like crazy to burn it all off.

Is this a joke? They are professional national level cricketers and this is their job. Are they small children that they need to be cajoled into following diets?

If you are a batter or a spinner, you can get away with poor fitness.

But, if you are a keeper or a fast bowler, no excuse for bad fitness.

Fitness tests should be done 2 twice a year and if you fail in the tests your contract gets cancelled.

Cricket isnt just rolling your arm over and hitting 6s Theres a lot more that goes into it if you wanna become a top class cricketer

Theres a reason why most of the worlds best players are fit

Shane Warne? Tendulkar? Sehwag? Jaysuriya?

They all had ripped abs?

FITNESS
It’s a wrongly understood and then wrongly used term in cricket. And some people try to justify their fat rear ends as if the whole world is fool.

Fitness in cricket does NOT mean that you should look like Tarzan or Ronnie Coleman.

When you are a young player starting your international career, you MUST be lean and agile.

You must have strong and flex muscles, and strong ligaments to have quick reflexes. You must have a very healthy BMI.
And you must have good athletic ability and good stamina.

You should then move your way up from here and after playing for 15 to 20 years with an excellent record, you start getting out of shape then it’s totally OK. An example would be Rohit Sharma.

The problem we have is that a Humpty Dumpty looking youngster manages to hit a few lapaardu type tulla sixes, and then he immediately starts comparing his young (fat and unfit body) to veterans like Inzi and Rohit who are in their 30 and 40s. And he says, “hey look at Rohit and Inzi. They are fat and out of shape, if they can play Intl cricket then why can’t I?

They don’t realize that they should compare themselves with Rohit n Inzi when these two were 18 and 20.

If our players want to look at the example of lean n fit youngsters then watch a few young Australians in the BBL.
Many of these little known domestic Aussie players present a great example of fitness and agility that is a mandatory demand of modern day cricket.

Here Haris Sohail makes 15 odd singles and needs to sit on the ground after every next run but he thinks he is Inzi

Sharjeel thinks he is Ranatunga and Azam Khan thinks he is Rohit Sharma.

I think the only two or three good fit players Pak produced were Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, and Shadab Khan. YK was OKish. Ijaz was good too.
None had rip abs but they were/are “cricket fit”.

Shane Warne? Tendulkar? Sehwag? Jaysuriya?

They all had ripped abs?

These are all time greats who had a decent level of fitness They werent obese and unfit and could bat and ball for days on end and run all day

Comparing them to the likes of raheem cornwall, azam khan and sharjeel etc is an insult to them.

Fitness is a controllable facet of performance that everyone can improve on.

There is so much you can't control- the amount of talent in a team, the touring schedule, the opposition, the conditions etc.

It seems a no brainer to improve a team by enforcing that ok, we aren't quite at the top. Let's do everything we can to get there. Fitness and fielding are two things relatively easily improved by just sheer practice and hard work. Not everyone can be Jonty but 95% of cricketers can become a decent catch and a sharp fielder. Being fitter puts you in a position to leverage your talent more often, for longer, concentrate longer and builds mental strength.

I'd say India has done a great job in the Kohli era of improving their physicality and fitness. It's been a clear focus and not compromised on and they have seen big improvements in performance and belief. They have a lot of talent too, but even if they didn't, your floor will never be very low if you maintain high standards.

The Australian team used to have guys like Boon & Merv Hughes, Boof Lehman... those days ended 20 years ago. talented batsmen like Cosgrove lost even their state deals for not getting himself fit enough and that was 5-10 years ago already. Usman spent a couple of years out of the team until he improved those 2%ers like his fitness, running and ctaching. He hired a trainer (boxing type guy since he wanted reflexes and stamina), set up a gym at home for no excuses and worked at it.

Pakistan needs to move with the times. Talent alone isn't enough when everyone else at the top is also talented, but working hard to maximise that talent and being fully professional.

there should be absolutely no compromise on fitness in international cricket. so many aspirants yet only few get the privilege to represent the country, no reason why you shouldn't be fit.

looking at you, rohit sharma! he has bucket hands to catch well, can dive around but frequently pulls his hamstring and gets ruled out. why can't the strength & conditioning coach push rohit to shed a few kgs and get fit. nobody is asking for the abs but get fit at least. and then there is ashwin, who just doesn't have an athletic body i guess. he doesn't pull his hamstring or anything but is a very heavy & slow mover in the field and can't dive.
